$220 million revival featured as one of top tourism-design projects; 248-room Renaissance Resort lands Four-Diamond rating from AAA

La Concha’s $220 million revival not only injected a much-needed burst of energy into Condado’s tourism district, but also grabbed the spotlight as the new chic spot “to see and be seen.”

The upcoming August edition of the prestigious Architectural Digest (AD) magazine features La Concha’s remodeling project and its resurrection as a 248-room Renaissance Resort. It dubs the end result a total success in preserving the essence of the “beautifully massed, expertly sited, vividly inventive building…” and goes on to describe the works of the architects as masterful in bringing back to life this San Juan tropical modernist gem.

“La Concha’s original tropical modernist design skillfully combined with new structural design—aimed at capturing natural light and air flow as well integrating interior spaces with natural surroundings—is what has made this project successful. Beyond an architectural preservation initiative, the new La Concha hotel has become the expression of our brand as a premier entertainment and tourism destination,” said José “Peco” Suárez, general manager.

Appropriately, AD credits the developer’s foresight for heeding the advice of concerned citizens and historians who recommended breathing new life into the original 1958 La Concha shell instead of demolishing the structure to build a new one when it passed into private hands. That smart move has paid off with the resounding positive response from both the local and visiting tourist communities.

The AD article also captures the mammoth task the office of Marvel & Marchand Architects and Jorge Rosselló Interior Designers & Space Planners took on in rescuing La Concha’s long-neglected structure.

The article notes the architects created deep-shading overhangs, open corridors, windows and doors that open to lush interior courtyards and provide crossventilation, and a beautifully lacy quiebrasol (their take on a brise-soleil) for further modulation of light and heat.

The piece goes on to say “the hotel featured vaulted ceilings that capped poolside cabañas, a sea of white marble in its interiors and Salvatori’s whimsical mollusk of a restaurant floating in a reflecting pool that seemed to merge into the infinity of the ocean beyond.”

Despite a number of additions and subtractions over the years, the basic bones of the original were kept intact, according to architect José R. Marchand and designer Jorge Rosselló, noting their stroke of luck when they found the original hotel drawings that revealed important architectural elements such as the spiral staircase in the lobby and the cabañas that had been scrapped over the years.

Dubbed the most dashing expression of the hotel’s energy is la concha itself, Mario Salvatori’s original seashell restaurant, which had lost much of its luster over the years. Lit from below and with ambient Murano glass lamps, the shell now emerges as the pure piece of sculpture that it always was, the AD article said.

La Concha also recently earned the coveted Four-Diamond rating in its first-time inspection by the American Automobile Association (AAA). La Concha landed the prestigious ranking for its high degree of hospitality, service and attention to detail.

Other details that make La Concha a Four-Diamond resort include special attention to style, décor, amenities and services, excellent curb appeal, landscaping and lighting in the parking lot, impressive architectural features and added security. Approximately 32,000 hotels throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean are AAA-approved and rated from a low of One Diamond to the rarest Five Diamond.

La empresa local Vista Systems engalanó la portada de una prestigiosa revista de la industria de cristal a nivel mundial, gracias a su trabajo en el restaurante Perla, del hotel La Concha, en Condado.
Cuando Claudio Reck, propietario de Vista Systems, con sede en Carolina, concedió la entrevista a la revista US Glass, Metal & Glazing no pensó que poco después se llevaría la sorpresa de encontrar su trabajo expuesto en la portada de la publicación.

La empresa local, reconocida por su atención al detalle en proyectos para clientes exigentes, compitió por el proyecto de Perla con muchos otros contratistas, ya que el diseño propuesto exigía que los inmensos cristales de formas irregulares tuviera un montaje prácticamente invisible.
“El requisito era que no tuviera vigas de metal. Estuvimos como seis meses buscando un fabricante que hiciera el cristal, hasta que conseguí uno en Singapur que nos dijo que sí. Vinieron hasta ingenieros de Singapur a medir y observar la estructura”, relató.

Reck contó que cuando comenzó a trabajar en La Concha no pensaba obtener el proyecto del emblemático restaurante Perla. Ya tenía las manos llenas con la venta e instalación de las puertas de cristal a prueba de huracanes en todas las habitaciones del hotel.

“Me arriesgué porque nunca había hecho un proyecto tan grande, pero la calidad del trabajo y la atención a los detalles consiguió que nos dieran todo el trabajo de cristalería del hotel”, señaló, pero aclaró que por presiones de tiempo, el recibidor de La Concha lo trabajó otro contratista.

Bill Marriott, CEO of Marriott International, to attend ribbon-cutting ceremony; new 235-suite tower completes $420 million Condado Duo redevelopment

Bill Marriott, chairman & CEO of Marriott International, will be in town tomorrow, Feb. 18, for the traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony for THE Suite Tower—the second phase of the celebrated revival of La Concha, A Renaissance Resort. THE Suite Tower features 235 tastefully appointed suites, slated to be available in April. The Tower will generate 50 new jobs in addition to the 400 La Concha already employs. Another 350 jobs were created during construction.

THE Suite Tower, developed to the tune of $100 million, is part of the popular $420 million grand Condado Duo redevelopment. The first phase, featuring the 248-room La Concha, was inaugurated Dec. 8, 2007. It has become one of the most successful hospitality developments in recent times, achieving the prestigious AAA 4-Diamond classification in February 2009.

Joining Bill Marriott during the official opening ceremony will be hotel owners Hugh Andrews and David Koffman; Jaime López Díaz, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Co.,and José M. Suárez, president of International Hospitality Associates.

Future guests at THE Suite Tower will also enjoy various meeting and special events rooms including The Ocean Lounge, Indigo Room and The Atrium. The Tower’s design concept, developed by the local firms Marvel & Marchand and Jorge Rosselló, incorporates the hotel’s tropical-chic surroundings into the aesthetics and décor of the new space. F&R Construction was the project contractor.

THE Tower is expected to build upon the success of its Duo sidekick, La Concha, recently named by Architectural Digest, Condé Nast Traveler and Travel & Leisure magazines as one of the most successful architectural-revival projects worldwide. Dubbed by local enthusiasts as the home of fashionistas, La Concha’s touch of elegance is seen in all areas of the hotel, including its gastronomic operations Solera, Level 25, Aroma, the Lobby Lounge and Perla.

López Díaz, anunció la ceremonia de develación de THE Suite Tower en La Concha A Renaissance Resort, localizada en la Avenida Ashford en Condado. La actividad que contó con la participación del Sr. JW Marriott Jr., CEO y Presidente de Marriot International, añade 235 nuevas habitaciones al inventario de la Isla y 50 nuevos empleos.


Es para nosotros un honor recibir en Puerto Rico al Señor Marriott y tener la oportunidad de agradecer su confianza en nuestro destino, indicó Jaime A. López Díaz, director ejecutivo de la CTPR. Este proyecto, construido a un costo de $100 millones y que añadirá 235 habitaciones al área de El Condado, ha creado 350 empleos en su etapa de construcción y 50 empleos en su etapa operacional, que se suman a los sobre 400 empleos actuales en La Concha Resort. Empleos buenos que continúan fortaleciendo nuestra económica explicó el Titular.

Por su parte, Hugh A. Andrews, dueño y desarrollador del hotel junto a Burton Koffman, agradeció a los que han hecho posible el financiamiento y la construcción de THE Suite Tower y firmó juntó al Sr. Marriott una extensión al Acuerdo de Franquicia para hacer constar la adición de la nueva torre y sus 235 Suites a la prestigiosa familia de hoteles Marriott.

Hace sólo 26 meses tuvimos la oportunidad de re-inaugurar esta joya arquitectónica que es La Concha, logrando posicionarla como el lugar preferido de locales y visitantes. Hoy con sumo orgullo presentamos su nueva torre con 235 modernas suites y amplios espacios para reuniones y actividades, expresó José M. Suárez, presidente del Condado Dúo.

THE Suite Tower es una de de tres torres de condohoteles que forman parte del Condado Dúo. El mismo también incluye hoteles La Concha A Renaissance Resort y el Condado Vanderbilt. La restauración de estos hoteles y la construcción de los nuevos condohoteles forman parte de un esfuerzo de revitalización a la zona de El Condado. Como parte de esta revitalización la CTPR se encuentra trabajando un plan estratégico enfatizado en servicio a los turistas y embellecimiento y ornato de los recursos.

Estaremos dando énfasis al servicio al cliente con el programa Information on the Go donde personal especializado viajará en Segways alrededor de la ciudad brindando información a los turistas del área. También trabajaremos un programa de embellecimiento de la ciudad utilizando Meshs de promoción del destino para cubrir los estorbos visuales. Adicional a esto, como parte de este programa continuaremos la Limpieza de Playas que ya provee la CTPR al área, pero esta vez añadiendo en las mismas los compactadores de basura Big Belly. Estos compactadores solares serán distribuidos a lo largo de la costa para minimizar los desperdicios sólidos en las mismas, explicó el Director Ejecutivo.

Al mismo tiempo se estará trabajando junto al Municipio de San Juan en mejorar las aceras y la iluminación y junto al Departamento de Transportación y Obras Públicas para la culminación de los trabajos de remodelación del Puente Dos Hermanos.

Este tipo de iluminacion esta siendo utilizada por edificios como Plaza AEELA, los anexos del Popular Center, la sede de Airmaster, el Holiday Inn Express de Condado, entre otros y ahora la torre de condo-hotel del hotel Renaissance La Concha.
