Now it has attracted the attention of the renowned RIBA International Award, recognizing excellence conceived by its members from around the world. With its shimmering façade of diagonal white aluminum and blue glass patterns, the building reflects the sea and sky just as it does Saxo Bank’s profile as a solid, dynamic and modern bank. Inside, a transparent and inspiring environment enhances the sense of team spirit amongst employees. The open plan layout of each floor surrounds a softly shaped, top-lit atrium; with a winding main staircase functioning as the building’s spine. The openness allows for interaction, sharing of knowledge and an environment of learning amongst this highly driven and international team of professionals. Kim Herforth Nielsen, Principal Architect of 3XN comments on the design saying: "The building is designed in such a way that it challenges the surroundings and yet contributes to a unified setting. The interior has been designed in close collaboration with Saxo Bank to create an environment of learning; encouraging interaction and sharing of knowledge. "The RIBA International Award isn’t just any prize. There is a very thorough evaluation process from the committee’s side, and they have visited all of the projects. It is very important for us to create architecture with meaning, and not just a signature piece. I think this is why we have won." The RIBA International Award recognizes excellence conceived by its members from around the world. The awards ceremony will be held in London on July 14th. http://static.worldarchitecturenews.com/news_images/11783_1_saxo2big.jpg http://static.worldarchitecturenews.com/news_images/11783_2_saxo3big.jpg Jarmo K June 13th, 2009, 02:40 PM ^ im not a huge fan of the buildings facade, but on the other hand the interior is absolutely magnificent. what an enjoyment it must be for the staff to work there... 3xn knows how to design quality space. btw, good set of photos of the building: http://www.archdaily.com/20782/saxo-bank-3xn/ ramblersen June 13th, 2009, 07:47 PM ^^ Very surprising and impressive by 3xN - especially considering: - only 15 projected (this yrar) - Other recipients include names like Foster, Herzog and de Meuron, Rogers. Chipperfield and Sauerbruch Hutton - Other awarded projects include mega projects like Beijing Airport Terminal 3, National Stadion Beijing, the Water Cube - That British architects or projects are generally strongly favoured, emperically taking around half the international awards. This doesn't leave many awards for small projects in small cities by small architects. Wonder what their selection criteria are. The Danish track reccord for this prize is pretty good though: Danish RIBA International/European Awards: 2009: Saxo Bank (Copenhagen), 3xN 2008: The Royal Playhouse (Copenhagen), Lundgaard & Tranberg 2007: Alsion Concert Hall and Science Park (Sønderborg), 3XN 2007: Tietgenkollegiet (Copenhagen), Lundgaard & Tranberg 2006: Kilen (Copenhagen), Lundgaard & Tranberg 2005: Sampension (Copenhagen), 3xN 6 awards in five years is pretty good - considering 63 European/International awards have been handed out for those five years, app. half of which to British architects/projects. http://www.architecture.com/Awards/RIBAInternationalAwards/2009/Winners2009.aspx http://www.architecture.com/Awards/RIBAEuropeanAwards/RIBAEuropeanAwards.aspx http://www.architecture.com/NewsAndPress/News/AwardsNews/Press/2007/RIBANationalAndEuropeanAwards.aspx http://www.architecture.com/Awards/RIBAEuropeanAwards/2006/RIBAEuropeanAwards2006.aspx http://*************************/awards/riba_awards_2005.htm ramblersen June 15th, 2009, 09:55 AM Fuglesang Art Museum byTony Fretton on the Danish island of Lolland has gotten a RINA Eiropean Award 2009 as one of only six projects. http://www.archicentral.com/2009-riba-award-winners-announced-18561/ (bottom of the page) As for my previous post, I mistook the International Award for the European one. Wonder what the criteria is for giving Saxo Bank am International Award instead of a European one, though. Previous years, it has only been given to projects outside the EU. Well now it's 7 Danish RIBA Awards in five years anyhow. ramblersen July 24th, 2009, 06:43 PM As one of only six buildings, Fuglesang Art Museum by Tony Fretton has been shortlisted for the Stirling Prize. Nope and I have thought the exact same thing. I merely reported it but certainly find it very weird too. But I think he's kind of a darling in Brittish architecture, considered very "good taste" and it is supposed to be very well integrated with the old buildings and the surrpundings. But seriously is THAT ENOUGH - even for RIBA that is not as much after the eye-catching, ece-pleasing landmark that the rest of us like? I certainly can't se it win either, too bad they don't offer odds on hin NOT getting it.:p ramblersen August 11th, 2009, 10:54 PM ^^ Did you vivist this museum? An award for ”exceptional contribution to New York City Streetscape and the Public Realm” has been presented to Jan Gehl by New York City’s commisioner for Transport, Janette Sadik-Khan. During the past two and a half years, Gehl Architects has been a consultant for NYC to enhance the quality of the urban environment. In just two years, 750 km (approx 450 miles) of bicycle paths have been established, many sidewalks have been widened and new squares established. The contribution by Gehl Architects was honored with the award that was presented to Jan Gehl in NYC at a ceremony, October 7, 2009. Several bloks of Broadway have been closed to vehicle traffic, which has enabled the creation of new plazas on Times Square, Herald Square and Madison Square. A bicycle culture is steadily developing and the new squares have been received with enthusiasm by both New Yorkers as well as tourists. http://www.gehlarchitects.com/?#/343957/ ramblersen October 23rd, 2009, 05:41 PM Guggenheim names winners of Design It: Shelter Competition On the 50th Anniversary of the Frank Lloyd Wright–designed Solomon R. F. Møller Architects and Akershus Hospital. Top healthcare award for C. F. Møller Akershus University Hospital receives Building Better Healthcare Award The most prestigious prize in the healthcare built environment, the Building Better Healthcare Awards, has declared the Akershus University Hospital by C. F. Møller Architects as winner of the Award for Best International Design. The UK Building Better Healthcare Award for Best International Design is intended to reward an outstanding project that contributes to new thinking and is relevant to the UK's future experience of delivering healthcare. The Akershus University Hospital in Oslo is one of Europe's most modern hospital designs and intended to appear not as a traditional institutional building; but as a friendly, informal place with open and comprehensible surroundings oriented towards the patients and their relatives. C. F. Møller has worked consciously to integrate the daily lives of the patients and the world outside. The aim is to make admission as secure and as close to the patient's normal life as possible. Despite its size, the complex forms a comprehensible whole which is easy to find your way around, while at the same time allowing patients to feel at home in their departments. The internal, open boulevard, offering such services as a hairdresser, priest, library, café and pharmacy, is similar to an urban environment and normal daily life. The boulevard is five storeys tall, and concludes in a glass roof. Daylight plays an important role in making the various areas feel welcoming and secure, while the use of wood and other materials familiar to the patient from home helps create an atmosphere of safety and belonging. The Akershus University Hospital is also a highly sustainable design, making use of locally sourced materials, and geo-thermal energy to provide 85% of the hospital's heating and more than 40% of the total energy consumption. Short distances between functions, a clear organisation and extensive use of modern technology including robotics give staff more time for patients. The design is the result of a 1st prize in an international competition, won by C. F. Møller Architects in 2000. The buildings where completed on time and within budget, and inaugurated in 2008 after a 4 year construction period. The 2009 Better Building Healthcare Awards attracted a record 156 entries across a range of categories, and the final stage of judging under the chair of Susan Francis, Special Advisor for Health at the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), involved individual site visits of the shortlisted entries before choosing the winner. http://www.worldarchitecturenews.com/index.php?fuseaction=wanappln.projectview&upload_id=12827 IceCheese May 21st, 2010, 12:47 AM Two main points here: 1. He has broken Denmark’s good-old boy network challenging a constipated establishment to think outside a boring box. He is challenging Europe’s mundane status quo. He is also a leading force in Europe’s Green Architecture movement producing astonishing and exemplary works of sustainable design. He has inspired Europe’s emerging young generation—of which he is apart—to push for new architecture beyond the pale fringe. At age 38, Bjarke Ingels has already had an astonishing career and is only starting to shape a new contemporary direction in today’s European architecture. For these reasons and numerous others, The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design have named Bjarke Ingels as the recipient for the 2010 European Prize for Architecture. The European Architecture Prize, established as a collaborative effort between The European Center for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum, is to be formally presented to Bjarke Ingels at “The City and The World: Madrid Symposium” November 4-7, 2010. On Friday, November 5, at a Gala Diner and special Award’s Ceremony, together with Colegio Oficial de Arquitecturos de Madrid, Madrid’s Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón Jiménez will officially present Mr. Ingels with the lauris nobilis—symbolic of the European Prize. Mr. Ingels will give a lecture preceding the dinner at 6:00PM at Centro de Turismo Colón, Plaza Colón, Madrid. “We are delighted to bring to Europe and to the world’s attention this remarkable young Danish architect,” states Christian K. Narkiewicz-Laine, Museum President, The Chicago Athenaeum. “He has championed abold, fresh, and progressive atmosphere in today’s Europe and he will certainly set the stage for new ideas, a new provocative approach to design and urbanism, as well as feed the flames for a new philosophical debate in years to come.” For this year’s Prize, The European Centre received nominations from professional organizations and societies, museums of architecture, organizations and institutions throughout Europe. Members of The European Centre’s International Advisory Committee served as the jury for the Prize. (Nominations for 2011 are due by August 1, 2011. See The European Center’s website at www.europeanarch.eu for more details.) The purpose of The European Prize for Architecture is to honor annually a living architect whose built work demonstrates vision and talent and a body of work that has significant contributions to art and humanity. http://www.designophy.com/newslog/design-article-1000002389-danish-architect-bjarke-ingels-receives-the-european-prize-for-architecture.htm http://www.bustler.net/index.php/article/bjarke_ingels_to_receive_the_european_prize_for_architecture/ IceCheese November 8th, 2010, 08:36 PM The National Museum, department of Architecture, in Oslo is one out of four nominees for the European Concrete Award 2010 (for buildings).
