in summer this place is full of people relaxing, reading, playing volleyball or frisby... and some are even sunbathing... directly in the center of the city :D

Berlin is so underrated.. it's also one of the cities in Europe that has probably changed the most in the last 20 years. I'd be nice to have some then and now photos.

Berlin took serious damage in WW2. The german army made a last stand against the soviet army, it was a battle house for house...

Let us remeber the lost cupolas of Berlin, the biggest loss was probably the cupola of the Prussian State Library, which will be replaced with a glass cube in the next years.

This is a great thread (the best one I saw about Berlin I think).

It's inside the Alte Nationalgalerie.
I think it's funny how domes are often hidden inside Berlin's buildings. Before the war, Berlin was a city full of smaller and bigger domes. Most is gone now though... But we'll get the dome of the Stadtschloss back soon.:banana:

The original masterplan of the east german governmant was to erase the previous city structure in favour of an utopian communist city. At the loatcion of the Nikolaiviertel a port for river boats was planned. We are lucky that this plan was changed :D

Instead they rebuild the area in advance of the 750 anniversary of Berlin. Due to limited ressources of the east-german state, the reconstrution is rather cheap and not very detailed. You can see this at many buildings.

One thing I can't understand, why presenting Berlin always in the worst light? Every other nation would proudly advertise their capital in the best light.

It would not be honest if any other german bashed Berlin, but I am from here, I am allowed to also say negative things ;).

If you have a close look on Berlin, you'll find a lot of ugly places. It is not like the usual sugarcoated tourist destination. And a lot of people are confused about the harsh but fair personality of it's inhabitants (I guess that's the very common difference between urban and rural people). But on the other hand, it is right this state of incompleteness that defines Berlin.

I'll answer in German, so I can better express what my problem was:
Ich fand's halt nich so schön, dass ich mir den, verzeih mir die Ausdrucksweise, Poppes aufgerissen hab, um wirklich die schönsten Bilder im Netz zum Nikolaiviertel zu finden und dann kommt gleich wer daher und postet als Antwort darauf die hässlichsten. Und das im "I love Berlin Thread". :(
Ich hab' auch verstanden, dass du das nicht böse gemeint hast. Du dachtest wahrscheinlich, ich wüsste nicht so gut über dieses "Disneyland-Viertel" bescheid und hast mir daher etwas Info zukommen lassen.
Aber meinst du, dass ich so unwissend von der Allgemeinsituation sein kann, wenn ich es tatsächlich geschafft hab, aus zahlreichen Online-Galerien nur perfekte Pics ohne irgendwelche Gammelplatten zu finden? :lol:
Daher, wenn ich demnächst nochmal mühevoll Fotos von Berlins Schokoseite posten sollte, dann fänd ich's echt toll, wenn man mich in meinem vermeintlichen Irrglauben lässt. Oder er/sie kann ja noch einen "I love Berlin's Schmuddelecken-Thread" aufmachen.

@Tiaren: Ich finds ja echt toll, dass du dir so viel Arbeit machst und nur die besten Bilder vom Nikolaiviertel suchst bzw. postest. Aber deine Bilder verfälschen übelst die Realität. Wenn jemand deine Bilder sieht und dann nach Berlin kommt (ins Nikolaiviertel), dann kann er ja nur enttäuscht sein. Da sollte man schon gleich mit der ganzen Wahrheit rausrücken, finde ich.

What's so special about the bus line number 100?

Maybe is nothign special for Berliners, but it goes to a lot of Berlin's sightseeings.

Since I was a tourist, I loved going in this line, on the second floor enjoying great tours and views of the city. And it is included in the U-Bahn Tageskarte.

Ich kenne das... wenn ich Gäste habe und die unbedingt den historischen Stadtkern sehen wollen, dann führe ich sie ganz schnell am Nikolai-Viertel vorbei Richtung Gendarmenmarkt. :D

Es wäre schön, wenn das Viertel komplett neu bebaut werden würde, aber es gibt noch genügend andere Baustellen.

It's always incredible to see just how much Berlin has rebuilt since reunification especially when these events were still occuring 18/19 years ago when Berlin was still a divided city!

We all know that Berlin can be quite an ugly city compared to Paris or Rome or even other German cities, but then I can show you plenty of photos of Auckland or London that are as hideous/more hideous than some of the worst that Berlin has to offer. Nearly every city has a dark side, however, it's great to celebrate the good too - especially when they've changed as much as Berlin in a short space of time.

One thing I can't understand, why presenting Berlin always in the worst light? Every other nation would proudly advertise their capital in the best light.

Berlin still has a lot of impressive administrative buildings. From the out and inside. They somehow survived the war the best...

A building I really like, is the Altes Stadthaus right next to the Rotes Rathaus.
It was built after the Rotes Rathaus proved to be too small. So Berlin has in fact two main city halls. :lol:

Our actual Town Hall doesn't have any administrative role, but the city administration buildings are very much restricted to the public, that's why I asked. :)

Honestly, don't want to suck up to you. I don't love Berlin (there's just too much about it I don't like, architecturally as well as politically), but I definitely like it in many ways and adore its function as one of the main cultural centers in the world, as well as it being our capital. That said, Berlin could do a lot more with all its potential (demolishing all those nasty commieblocks in Mitte, for instance).



By the by: What happened to your "random-shot"-thread (or whatever it was called)? Haven't seen it around for a long time.

Depends where in Germany. Southern Bavaria seems to have a lot of sun at that time of the year.

Usedom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usedom) should be white on that map, it officially has the most sun hours in all of Germany (over 1900 on average) :)

Nice, but some of the things in the video are incorrect. Rügen is the largest german island, but not the largest island of the baltic sea... so I do not trust in the other statements well.

Sanssouci is the name of this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanssouci) palace in Potsdam.
Sanssouci is french (sans souci) and means something like "carefree" or "without worries" in english.

There is some speculation about the origin of the name. An inscription of the castle says "Sans, Souci" (see picture), which would mean "without, sorrow" or "sorrow because of something is missing"

At first it stood as a defense against Allied bombs. In the 1950s it was used to store imported fruit from Cuba, and in the 1990s it became the location for the hottest techno-parties around. On Thursday an old Berlin bunker revealed its latest transformation: It now houses a private collection of contemporary art.

Walking through the massive five-storey concrete bunker that houses the Boros Collection on Reinhardstrasse in Berlin, you wouldn't guess that it had a far more sinister past. Back in 1942 Nazi architect Albert Speer built the place to help the city sustain what he believed would be the final blowout battle leading to a German victory. It was part of his and Adolf Hitler's grand "Germania" (more...) vision, whereby Berlin would be entirely renewed -- fully devoid of degenerate art, of course -- after the Germans had triumphed.

But today the old pock-marked fortress belongs to Polish-born collector and advertising entrepreneur Christian Boros and his wife Karen. And it was here on Thursday that they unveiled their impressive art collection that they've amassed over nearly two decades. Now the spiciest of international contemporary art sits in a cavernous piece of Berlin's architectural past. "This building is a landmark, a part of German history," Boros says. "It's not the Brandenburg Gate, but it has seen Berlin change a lot over the last half century."
