Chifley Tower
Sydney, Australia

HEIGHT: 244m/801 feet
FLOORS: 50 floors
COMPLETION: 1992
ARCHITECT: Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates

The project is a compositional exercise in the assemblage of parts, each part drawing the meaning from a particular aspect of its surrounding context. The timing of this commission coincided with Australia’s winning the American Cup.

The dominant feature is the glass sail facing Sydney Harbour. Besides the implied symbolism of Australia’s victory, it embodies the spirit of the city of Sydney. The wedge-shaped site on which this building site was formed by the collision of old and new city grids. The resulting complex geometry needed resolution. Similarly, the pedestrian scale and the incomplete geometry of Chifley Square to the south needed attention. The site is also an edge site, highly visible from the harbor and the stretch of Botanical Gardens and the Domain park to the east.

At its base, the building is composed of parts that define the streetwall; as it rises it shifts in scale and wall articulation, finally orienting itself to the larger city grid at the top. The exterior material also changes from the primary expression of stone to the glass sail on the east, recognizing the building’s edge position in the city context. Pedestrian movement around the base is allowed to find a natural series of paths through the arcades and galleries introduced at street level, leading to the completed civic space at Chiffley Square.

as many Australians would say - this is a very Sydney building, the second best at that too

can't get enough

9.5 / 10

other frivalous info - this coupled with 101 Collins in Melbourne are Australia's two bbest business addresses.

the design (mainly the top) is somewhat similar to how Sydney's next tallest will turn out - A pinacle which will end up in the northern half of the crown

I really like it. The building works very well with its accompanying towers nearby. Yes, it's too bad that it is not taller - but, it's perfectly nice.

7/10 - I found this one hard to rate. It has a number of good points - the bay windows that extend out from the facade and race up the square side of the tower, and give the whole building soaring height from that side, the curved glass curtain wall, and the smaller round section with the rougher stone. I really like the way the designers went beyond the box and tried to infuse this tower with variety and liveliness.
But that rinky-dink little spire doesn't seem quite worthy of the rest of the building, and seems stuck on as an afterthought. Which brings up my biggest problem - there are so many different pieces, so many things going on, that the building seems chaotic. It's really hard for me to "wrap my eyes around it" and see how the parts blend together to make the whole. In a couple of the pictures, it took me a moment to figure out what was a part of the tower, and what wasn't.

im from toronto and i think this building has a great design, the only problem i have with it is the institutional green colour on the spire(i have a pet peeve with this clolour always have and always will). why do they still choose to go with that colour sometimes? other than that this is a really great design... too bad its not taller

6/10... it's OK, but it just isn't that good.
It depends which side you're looking at.
I think the round side looks pretty good - deserves maybe 8 or so - but the square side is butt ugly, and has a horrible late 80's - early 90's blockiness to it. I would give it 4 if i was looking at the square end. So, this averages out to 6...
Plus it isn't that high.

I go with the remarks like "very confusing", "chaotic" etc. that were made by others in earlier contributions to this thread.
Combine that with the fact that I don't like these type of buildings -that are to be found in Asia especially- and also the appalling color-scheme and evident misdimensions and you get something that annoys me........but not most others, so that will be a relief to you.
