^^ there is a agreement when malaysia & singapore seperated that any changes to the causeway must hav the consent of both sides, so malaysia cannot alter its half of the causeway without this legal requirement. singapore was negotiating with malaysia 2 reach an agreement, the bargaining point was sand & airspace, malaysia felt that this was too much a price for the consent for the bridge. on hindsight it would hav been better to hav settled this point b4 starting on the bridge. so this decision is for the best no bridge , no sand, no airspace all points that created problems r over. lets move on guys, gerbang perdana will b an awesome entry & exit point for jb :)

I think the scenic bridge will not help much in solving the current congested traffic. The government should do something on the road on the main land, but not on the current bridge as Johor has 2 bridges link to Singapore. In my opinion, is the design of the road system on the Johor that make the traffic become worst. So, by designing a better road that will link from the old bridge to the new CIQ should be no problem in copping with the jam. There4, the gov should save the money on the scenic and use it on the better road design in Johor.

actually the new CIQ diverts the traffic going to singapore from Jalan tun razak (CBD) to the east side of the city.... so i am sure that will definately cut down the unnessessary traffic in the city centre..... people can also avoid the city centre by using the new ring road..... if ure living in JB u will know wat i mean... hopefully.... heehee

btw the traffic in JB CBD isnt as bad as it use to be since they have changed alot of the roads in the city centre and they have made jalan wong ah fook and jalan tun razak one way lanes..... the only really jammed place now is jalan tebrau.... but that has also improved since the new ring road has been built....

Sand and airspace are the negotiation points for full bridge. For half bridge, not even a cent is required from Singapore. Then there is no point for Singapore to ask for those things.

No doubt that there is a clause in the agreement that any changes to the causeway must be with consent of both parties. But they should not enforce this provision because they would not lose anything.

What would Singapore lose should it allow Malaysia to continue with the half bridge?? I still don't get it.

Is the causeway is a shared property of Malaysian and Singaporean Gov?

i think the Malaysian Government made a right decision by canceling the construction of the scenic bridge.

but the question is, why did they insist on building the bridge before, knowing that Singapore does not agree with it?

another thing is what tomkat has mentioned. what is the reason for singapore to disagree with the scenic bridge?

tomcat,tyw whether malaysia can connect the scenic bridge to the causeway without singapore's consent is open to legal argument, so the best is to get consent so no need for legal problems, i think singapore also wants something out of this for its consent so.... you want something from me wat can u offer in exchange...the govt could not agree on the exchange. Like bargaining:) how to expect singapore to give up a bargaining position, it wont b given 4 free.
On why start on the bridge b4 agreement....project started by previous PM, already gone so far only bridge left to build...but when the full legal implications of going ahead without singapores consent now apparent better stop rather than b taken to court with possibility of losing and compensation.

no, what i mean is that "why Singapore didn't agree to the half bridge", not "why the half bridge can't be built without Sinapore's consent". tomkat has mentioned that the pipes will not affect them, they will not pay for the bridge, so why they still disagree??

On why start on the bridge b4 agreement....project started by previous PM, already gone so far only bridge left to build...but when the full legal implications of going ahead without singapores consent now apparent better stop rather than b taken to court with possibility of losing and compensation.

so, at that time, Dr. M assumed Singapore will build the bridge?? or he didn't know building the bridge needs Singapore's approval?

Dr M first wanted complete bridge but when singapore disagree he went 4 scenic bridge, i dont know if he knew the legality of not getting singapore's consent or mayb he couldn't b bothered ;)

oh ok i get u..... i feel singapore wanted 2 object bcos this was a bargaining point 2 get some concession from malaysia, on hindsight it may hav been better to ask for something less sensitive than airspace....or better still create much goodwill by consenting without any conditions...wow wouldn't that have warm ties between us :) mayb next time when singapore wants to ask for some thing from malaysia its goodwill would hav been return, 2 late now ..oh well politics & pride but no common business sense

Gerbang Perdana To Design Options For New Access From CIQ To Causeway
14-04-2006


KUALA LUMPUR, April 14 (Bernama) -- Gerbang Perdana Sdn Bhd is working with the government to review the Gerbang Selatan Bersepadu Project Master Plan to re-address the traffic problems by revisiting the traffic dispersal schemes and design options for the new access from the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex to the Johor Causeway.

Its managing director, Datuk Yahya A. Jalil, said he had commenced discussions with the traffic consultant, the Public Works Department and the relevant state agencies in reviewing the traffic dispersal scheme, which also takes into consideration the existing Johor Baharu Structure Plan.

"The eventual solution will need a revised arrangement for traffic dispersal schemes, especially from the arterial road networks which include the Inner Ring Road, Jalan Tun Abdul Razak and the newly proposed Eastern Dispersal Link," he said in a statement here Friday.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on Wednesday announced the government's decision to scrap plans to replace the 80-year-old Johor causeway with a bridge.

Yahya said the revision had to take into account existing constraints within Johor Baharu city.

"Socio-economic factors are also considered as this directly affects the people of Johor," he said.

He said it was a very challenging task to design and construct the new access right in the middle of the city with tremendous site constraints and at the same time minimise traffic disruptions.

"Finding the optimum solution for the new access to ensure efficient and effective traffic movements and dispersal is very critical and urgent," he said.

On compensation by the government, Yahya said he would discuss the matter with the government after assessing the situation with those involved in the project.
