View Full Version : JArch's LEGO Sears Tower
JArch February 11th, 2009, 04:06 PM This is my only lego project, which began at the beginning of the year. I started ordering parts I'd need around Christmas time and began working on it shortly there after.

... and this is where I'm at, three stories from the first setbacks. After 47 stories, or 43.5% complete, it stands 23.5" tall.
The white parts you see in the center is the two express elevator shafts that will end at the Skydeck. The roof and top will be removable to reveal the skydeck and elevators.
Dequal February 11th, 2009, 11:29 PM Looks cool :)
Guus February 11th, 2009, 11:34 PM Great project, looks very realistic. Keep up the good work, I'm curious for the result.
mattbennett13590 February 12th, 2009, 06:42 AM awesome!
reasonably simple, because it is square.
Are you going to put a light in it?
JArch February 12th, 2009, 03:10 PM I've thought about it, but I'm not sure if I am or not.
Dequal February 12th, 2009, 05:40 PM awesome!

Are you going to put a light in it?
I don't think that will look good.
Appreciation Station February 12th, 2009, 10:25 PM Looks pretty cool !!! How tall approx will it be once it's topped out?
gwool1sc February 12th, 2009, 10:29 PM I'll reserve judgement, but the more recent pictures look promising, I think it should turn out well...............
JArch February 13th, 2009, 02:40 AM Looks pretty cool !!! How tall approx will it be once it's topped out?
47 stories is 23.5", so add another 7 stories and you get 3.5" giving 27" to the halfway point of 54 stories. Double that to 108 stories, and you come up with 54 inches.
Guessing as close as I can, to the mechanical penthouse on the roof, it should be right around 54.5 inches, or 4.5 feet. Including the antenna I think it'll be just over 5 feet total. Once I get to the roof part I'm going to play with the antenna size to make it look semi-proportionate. I know the antenna on the real roof are right around the 290-300 foot mark.
JArch February 16th, 2009, 08:24 AM I raided the lego tubs to find any plate I could find, and finished it up to the 50th story, I have the first two setbacks completed. All in all, it's working out wonderfully.

Pretty sweet huh? I'll be on hiatus for March, won't make a whole lot of progress on it until then.
Appreciation Station February 16th, 2009, 10:50 AM lol , i love the message written in the dust on the TV :P
Dequal February 16th, 2009, 08:37 PM It looks like you already made the antennas on your table. :)
JArch February 16th, 2009, 10:25 PM Yep! I have the roof, and Skydeck floor built along with a rough build on the antennae, I think they'll end up being taller than that though. Once the building is topped off I'll have to see whether or not they're proportionate. They might end up another half foot to a foot taller than they are now.
JArch March 21st, 2009, 05:16 AM Been a while since I've been able to get here and update this. I made it past the first setbacks, and I'm stuck at the 63rd floor for now, which of course, is two mechanical floors from the next two setbacks where the building will take on the + shape. :)
Here she is, 63rd floor, 58.33% complete, and 31.5" tall.

Dequal March 21st, 2009, 07:01 PM Great work already :)
DinoVabec March 21st, 2009, 07:53 PM Great work...Where dou you get that much of the same parts??
JArch March 21st, 2009, 11:40 PM Lego.com has a pick a brick section, but the massive amounts of one part really starts to add up.
You can search for specific pieces like 1x1 black bricks in the Toys & Hobbies portion on Ebay, which is where I've gotten most of my pieces.
They're usually around half the price too. :)
Appreciation Station March 22nd, 2009, 12:52 AM Dude, this is lookin' awesome! Keep posting the photos during progress! Thanks :D
Dequal March 22nd, 2009, 12:06 PM You should post the final costs of it once you are ready. :) Maybe people will donate :p
JArch March 22nd, 2009, 06:30 PM I can tell you right now it's getting close to around $350 so far.
Bob Beaumont March 24th, 2009, 03:45 AM Yeah.. it's crazy how much stuff costs. Some of my N scale buildings have cost close to 350 dollars each too. Then again some were pretty cheap.
That all said.. I'm excited to see your final building. I love lego skyscrapers! really really cool!
Cheers, Bob
JArch March 26th, 2009, 04:08 AM I guess I was off some, for everything I've spent a mere $266.51 on these legos since December. I think it would have been double that so far had I not had a childhood fascination with legos.
He Named Thor March 26th, 2009, 04:56 AM Dude, that's awesome! Keep it up!
What are you going to do with it when it's done?
JArch March 26th, 2009, 02:39 PM Stick it in the corner of my living room and admire it. haha
JArch April 18th, 2009, 08:53 PM The 65th-66th floor setbacks are complete. I'm now waiting upon my 1x1 bricks to show up and I should be able to get it completed up to around the 70th floor.

JArch April 19th, 2009, 12:13 AM I'm playin rockband with my friend right now as a matter of fact. haha
JArch April 22nd, 2009, 02:50 PM I've got her up to the 75th floor now. Its starting to come into shape.
Its 75 floors, (and 7/12ths of the 76th floor complete), and 38.25 inches tall (just over 3 feet)

kevmr25 April 22nd, 2009, 06:00 PM Wow is that thing going to fit in your house?
Jude12 April 22nd, 2009, 06:20 PM Looking very good. :okay:
mgk920 April 22nd, 2009, 07:05 PM Imagining if each of those floor plates (those thin black pieces between the floors on the windows) were to go all the way through (like on the prototype) and you'd put random on/off lights on each floor....
:|
Looks interesting and I would show it to building's owner when done.
Mike
JArch April 23rd, 2009, 01:55 AM It's really getting tall now. :)
Yes, its up to my waist now.
Wow is that thing going to fit in your house?
It should. It'll be right around 54.5-55" tall (with another foot of antenna that I'm trying to figure out how to re-do). My family room has an 8 foot ceiling.
Looking very good. :okay:
Thanks.

Mike
I might send the owners some pictures so they'll rethink painting the real one.
I could definitely make one with floors like that, but the lights would get expensive. (looking at tiny HID bulbs and a way to power them could easily triple the cost of the building itself.)
ChicagoFreak96 April 29th, 2009, 02:56 AM Hey JArch I love your LEGO Sears Tower because the Sears Tower is my favorite building. Also, where did you get all of those LEGOS? I don't even have that many LEGOS.
Kw@n May 1st, 2009, 11:38 AM good work!
and you should put lamp in to the tower
it may be beautiful when you turn on lamp in tower
kevmr25 May 7th, 2009, 04:29 AM I agree with everyone, this thing would look awesome at night if you light it. I just don't know how exactly you would show it to use lite up at night. Some times I have little lights on my little skyline and it looks cool.

I started off with the base pieces from my old collection as a kid. I've used up all those plates, 1x1 bricks, etc.
When I was preplanning it I bought the 2x1 glass window pieces of lego.com, but the bulk of the pieces came from ebay. There are unlimited supplies you can purchase off ebay, and they usually end up being about ½ the price that they would be off lego.com.
helghast June 14th, 2009, 06:32 AM any more updates ?
aceflamingo23 August 2nd, 2009, 10:22 PM JArch, I have a question, how much did that all cost?
Pianoscience August 2nd, 2009, 11:59 PM Was it ever completed. Or did he accidentally knock it down?
JArch September 1st, 2009, 05:36 AM JArch, I have a question, how much did that all cost?
Thus far, its been around 300 dollars spent over the past 8 months.
Was it ever completed. Or did he accidentally knock it down?
Nope, to both. lol I took a hiatus on it. My workload got larger, as the workforce at my job got smaller.
I'm sitting here looking at it, and i have 150 window pieces on the way (which will take care of about 5 floors). She's sitting here at 82 stories complete. I'll have it completed by Christmas.
WiGgLz01 September 1st, 2009, 05:49 AM wow that is incredible! Very good job I can't wait to see it finished!
Dapperheid Tower September 1st, 2009, 06:43 AM Dude your Sears Tower = Epic Win
quanghuynhchung September 1st, 2009, 08:41 PM Can you make bank of china tower in HK out of LEGO?? btw, ur Sears Tower is fantastic!
Pianoscience September 2nd, 2009, 03:25 AM ^^ I don't think it's worth the money to make a Lego city just for this forum. Besides they have that stuff in Legoland.
JArch September 10th, 2009, 06:41 AM Not familiar with that tower, I tend to stick with US skyscrapers as my main focus. Once I complete this I may begin work on One Summit Square here in downtown Fort Wayne. Not the best of buildings, but it'll be another easy one to build. Thanks for the compliments all.
I'll have progress updates and pictures as they happen.

Good Luck!
JArch October 11th, 2009, 08:04 AM Its seriously been a month since I've updated this? wow. I'm slacking. I've ordered myself some 1x6 plates, 75 of them. I will have some more built and another pictorial update within the week.
WiGgLz01 October 11th, 2009, 08:51 AM Wow that is amazing how much does that cost to order that many Lego plates?
JArch October 17th, 2009, 07:30 AM Depends on the price of the pieces off ebay. usually they're 1.00-2.00 for 50 or 75 pieces. I only go to buy it now auctions.
WiGgLz01 October 17th, 2009, 08:08 AM That cheap!?! Geez at Lego they charge that much for one piece!
I was looking at my cousins Lego catalog and they really jackeD their prices up. Like a year ago I was looking into buying the green grocier right? Well at the time it was 59.99$. I looked at it a couple days ago, same set, nothing changed, and it was 159.99$ !
ChicagoFreak96 October 17th, 2009, 06:02 PM Yeah, I agree with u guys! I am a lego LEGO Club memeber so I get all of the club magazines in the mail. And when the product magazines come, I always look thru them and notice that all of the cool sets r quite expensive!
JArch October 20th, 2009, 05:48 AM Lego makes more money off ebay auctions. They make them in bulk and selling them in bulk is cheaper on production costs. They can sell them to a 3rd party, who can then break them down however they want, and sell them for whatever they want. Just depends on what kind of profit margin they want really. I'll find the cheapest set and click buy it now.
Eli case February 8th, 2010, 12:11 AM could you please post more pictures ?
WorldTradeCenterFan February 26th, 2010, 10:34 PM very good, i've made the world trade plaza (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 wtc) out of lego and i payed about 350€ for it^^
Eli case May 2nd, 2010, 12:55 PM Hey JArch I love your LEGO Sears Tower because the Sears Tower is my favorite building. Also, where did you get all of those LEGOS? I don't even have that many LEGOS.
