This design already fills the gap that exist currently. The rest is empty, because the stands wouldn't fit in corners. And I don't see any space there to make it rotterdam alike (which is still not a long-term solution for a stadium refurbished in 2013)...

With the reconstruction the running track will be removed.

Carrerra May 24th, 2009, 04:47 AM I don't like the project at all. I hate an oval ground for football. It's ugly and not suitable for footabll match. But I like it oval or round in exterior facase. So oval or round stadium and rectangular pitch are the perfect combination in terms of stadium beauty.

The pitch will be lowered and the lower tier redesigned in a sort of more rectangular than circular shape. The first picture shows this very well, notice how the upper tier and the lower one have a different curvature.

Jim856796 May 28th, 2009, 09:29 AM As far as I'm concerned, i dislike standing areas in all stadiums. They are a waste of space. I would like to see the field slightly lowered, the standing area filled in with more seats and the lower bowl redesigned to accommodate two floors of luxury boxes. I don't need a "rectangular" lower tier as well as a rectangular roof extension, that would totally ruin the look of the stadium. However, if the stadium is renovated, it would look a lot like a "carbon copy" of Maracana Stadium.

They play futsal and, mainly, volleyball. But only for major games.

Yes. The exterior was revised. Aa lot of stuff you can see in those first pictures, are not present in those last. Like the lakes or some "holes" in the floor. The redevelopment intention was not to change anything in the the stadium project itself.
I can't remember by heart any stadium with different curvatures now. Maybe Sercan cans.
All I know about the project, is that the upper tier will not be demolished. That's the reason for the oval shape in the top.
IN constrast, the lower tier will be completely reconstructed. So, it's curvature is rectangular.

Luke80 October 2nd, 2009, 02:44 PM Surely the best thing to do is to sink the playing field into the ground and extend the lower tier so that it meets the pitch as a rectangle. No other adjustments are needed. No-one in the upper tier gets any further away from the action. Capacity would increase as well.

Facade's architecture: Can not be changed by law. It's a Brazilian football historical site.
Lower tier: It will not be rectangular wich is bad. There won't be any race track or standings between that and the pitch. There will have a ditch to avoid crazy people invading the pitch tough.
Pitch: It will be sinked to allow perfect view from lower tier.
Any more doubts?
Capital78 October 4th, 2009, 04:48 PM I find this renovation excellent and far much better as for the Morumbi stadium. I like the oval shape, it's a part of traditional Brazilian style stadiums. The most important thing is, they will lower the pitch, so that all spectators (especially those in 1st tier) can have a good view.

Well, for me the shape of lower tier is rectangular. The upper tier will continue oval shaped.

However, if you consider rectangular only an "Old Trafford like" tier, I may agree with you. :okay:

Which has the problem of the view in the corners. That's why some new stadiums like City of Manchester are built rectangular but with a slightly curvature in the tiers

Also, it would be nice if there were an oval lower tier would just be closer to the football field with NO track.

Inconfidente May 15th, 2010, 07:08 PM I'm afraid it will not look nice when it's finished and after sometime maybe will be looking dirty.
It would be better if they use granite on facade, no pedras portuguesas for the pavement and cover the entire parking lot as it was in the previous project.
At least there are good news, works are being made on right time and the plans of local state government has been approved by FIFA yesterday.

Previstas para terminarem em dois anos, obras de reforma do Mineirão vão custar R$ 771 milhões
Dentro do plano de reforma do Mineirão, um importante passo será dado nesta quarta-feira (28). A partir das 10 horas, as escavadeiras começarão a retirar o gramado que, nos últimos 45 anos, proporcionou alegrias e decepções à torcida mineira. A ação das máquinas será acompanhada de perto pelo governador e candidato à reeleição, Antonio Anastasia, e pelo presidente da CBF, Ricardo Teixeira.
A vistoria de Teixeira faz parte de uma série de viagens que ele fará às cidades-sede da Copa 2014 para verificar o andamento das obras. Nesta terça-feira, ele esteve em Brasília, que, assim como o Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo, concorre com Belo Horizonte para receber a abertura do Mundial. Enquanto não se decide qual será o estádio privilegiado com a estreia da Copa 2014, o Mineirão continua a ser preparado para receber os jogos da competição.
Como o HOJE EM DIA adiantou com exclusividade em sua edição de domingo (25), 14 empresas de grande porte já adquiriram todo o material para concorrer no processo de licitação da terceira etapa. Esta será a fase em que serão feitas melhorias internas e expandida a cobertura, além da construção da esplanada que o ligará ao Mineirinho.
O valor total do edital da obra, que deve começar em dezembro deste ano e ser entregue em dois anos, é de R$ 771 milhões. Desse montante, R$ 654,5 milhões serão gastos nos trabalhos, sendo R$ 426,4 milhões para o estádio (cobertura de policarbonato e melhorias internas) e R$ 228,1 milhões para a esplanada, anexos e estacionamentos. O restante será investido na manutenção do estádio por 25 anos, que será o prazo de concessão que o vencedor da licitação terá para administrar o “Gigante da Pampulha”.
Atualmente, o Mineirão está em sua segunda fase de obras, que consiste no rebaixamento do gramado em 3,4 metros e a demolição da geral. Até esta terça, uma parte da geral já havia sido derrubada, em frente às antigas cadeiras superiores centrais. Além disso, uma rampa de acesso ao gramado foi construída, onde funcionava o bar 16. Outra está em processo de construção para que os caminhões possam entrar por uma e sair por outra.
No total, serão retirados 68 mil metros cúbicos de terra só da parte interna do fosso. Entretanto, quando a terra é remexida, pode aumentar em até 40% seu volume. Com isso, a expectativa do diretor de infra-estrutura da Administração de Estádio de Minas Gerais (Ademg), Ricardo Raso, é que sejam retirados 88,2 mil metros cúbicos de terra. Ainda não está certo para onde o material será levado, mas o mais provável é que seja utilizado nas obras dos piscinões de contenção das águas do Ribeirão Arrudas.
Para retirar todo esse volume de terra, serão necessários pelo menos 11.025 caminhões com caçamba estendida, com capacidade de 8 metros cúbicos. Já o destino do gramado ainda é incerto, e deve ser anunciado nesta quarta por Anastasia. A primeira fase, que consistia na recuperação da estrutura da fachada e da laje, já está concluída.

Jim856796 July 30th, 2010, 03:46 AM Due to the Governador Magalhaes Pinto Stadium being closed for reconstruction, the Mineiro and Cruzeiro football teams will relocate to the Independencia Stadium during that time. However, the Independencia Stadium has been demolished and a brand-new stadium is being constructed in that site. Mineiro and Cruzeiro are being put in a real awkward position here.

SAO PAULO – Pele says Brazil risks embarrassment if preparations to host the 2014 World Cup do not get up to speed soon.
Brazil's greatest footballer said he was most concerned about delays in building or improving stadiums and modernizing the country's "frightening" airport system.
"You know of the fight we had to get the (2016) Olympics and the World Cup, traveling around the world seeking votes and now a moment has come that is worrying everyone," Pele told a news conference on Friday.
"Brazil is running a great risk of embarrassing us in how it runs the World Cup, principally in communications. The airports are frightening and not just for Brazilians."
Pele said he spoke with directors of world soccer's governing body FIFA and also a group linked to European body UEFA's president Michel Platini, who also expressed concern over the pace of preparations in Brazil.
Most of the works for the World Cup are behind schedule and some of the stadiums have not even begun to be built as in the case of first division club Corinthians, chosen by Sao Paulo city as its match venue.
"Brazil has the obligation to stage a good World Cup, a good administration, and sadly it's already behind and has this controversy of Sao Paulo," the 70-year-old Pele said.
"The Paulista championship is the core of Brazilian football, it's what should already be settled and it still isn't settled."
Sao Paulo will stage the tournament's opening match, according to the organizing committee, but it is unclear how Corinthians will enlarge their stadium to the 60,000-capacity required by FIFA. Work is supposed to start next month.
Apart from the stadiums, infrastructure improvements are also required, especially to the inadequate airports.
In Brazil, air terminals are close to saturation point and Sports Minister Orlando Silva has said that is a major obstacle ahead of the World Cup.

No. Tests had been done to evaluate the structural condition of the stadium roof and they showed that it´s ok unlike the Maracanâ.

On some of the images published so far, it looks like it will follow the shape of the lower tier. yet, on others, it seems that it will follow the oval shape of the original ceiling of the stadium.
Despite being more difficult to be projected, I personally think it would look better if it followed the shape of the lower tier.
And which color will it be, anyway?
If it is light blue (as some renders may suggest), than the (red, I guess) chairs would yield a purple look when seen from above, from the helicopters' eyes.
Wouldn't it look better if it was (ruby) red instead? Then the blue sky would be framed by a purple looking rooftop before it met the (red, I guess) chairs...

Actually the Brazilians haven't invented any of these features, most of the stuff mentioned in the clip is in use for a decade or so. So we should say it's great that Brazil is willing to go that way and they're learning now so that others can learn from them in the future :)

Because this stadium os protected by the brazilian architectural patrmony as being made by the famous architect Oscar niemeyer and its a major exemple of the modernist era in Brasil. +++ it hás a huge sentimental feeling for the city habitants as many important games been played there and everybody nows the passion brasilians feel with their teams

The real name of the stadium architects are Eduardo Mender Guimarães Júnior and Gaspar Garreto but it´s a modernist icon indeed. The stadium is part of a modernist architectural complex so thats why its facade is protected by historic heritage.

England could face Brazil in a friendly designed to mark the re-opening of one of the 2014 World Cup's stadiums.
An upgrading of the Mineirao stadium in Belo Horizonte will be finished by 2013 and the region's state secretary thinks England would be ideal first opponents.
Sergio Barroso said: "We want England to play Brazil in a friendly in the opening match of the new stadium."
England's last match in Belo Horizonte was their infamous 1-0 defeat to the United States at the 1950 World Cup.
The stadium is undergoing reconstruction work to transform it into a state-of-the-art 65,000 capacity venue capable of staging the opening match of the 2014 World Cup.
But there are concerns that Brazilian FA President Ricardo Teixeira may not allow such a warm-up friendly to take place, given his recent comments about England and its media.
Teixeira, who also sits on Fifa's executive committee, said the English "were pirates who could go to hell".
The English FA's general secretary, Alex Horne, flew to Rio de Janeiro last week to improve England's relations with both Brazil and Fifa, following the fall-out from England's unsuccessful bid for the 2018 World Cup.
"We know what Ricardo Teixeira has said about the English, but the opening of the new stadium is more than just what he has said and his view of England," Barroso said.
"I am speaking to him and I am going to ask him to invite England to play here. Fifa says it is all about fair play and the good of the game so let's see what Mr Teixeira will do about it."
"England was the birthplace of football and Brazil developed the game and there are very strong links between our two footballing countries," he added.

No. The gym will suffer only minor adjustments to be used as a media center during the Cup. In fact the gym needs a major reform because it is badly outdated and the largest gym in Latin America deserves better treatment.

Not all Brazilian stadiums will look like this one, though. So generalizing is a bit unfair, especially when this harsh. Curitiba, Natal, Cuiaba, Sao Paulo and Brasilia will be much better in terms of bowl shape than Mineirao, which is a really valuable monument, which - at least for me - makes the case to leave its current form alone.

Shame are you who pass when you say it. The stadium's third tier, this also has, how do you think should to be or have? 4, 5, 6, 10??? This is a shame and not the opposite. Having a stadium in the extreme steep and super great, you lose sight and emotion? I prefer a thousand times a sustainable stadium where most of the year will be above half full, and perfect acoustics and especially in absolute comfort with its coverage, bold architecture and technology and modern without equal in the world. Better than that? Maybe double dose, but would lose the essence, you know?
The stadium has the ring of the bleachers, restaurants, bars, cabins and everything first class and what is most modern in the world in terms of technology and materials.
Brazil is doing everything to make a great World Cup. And in terms of stadiums, simply present the best projects and structures already seen in stadiums throughout the history of the World Cup and even the Olympics, always guiding sustainability, respect for the environment, the public or fans and originality and modernity. In this sense, will be the best World Cup ever held in the world with the best stadiums and in my opinion by far the set of the most beautiful and unique stadiums in the world.
Mineirão Congratulations, your project is beautiful and very, very, very elegant!!!
It is even more impressive when we remember the case of reform and not a new construction. Perfect! :applause::applause::applause:
Oh, and what the next "argument"? When not is the infrastructure are complaining of the projects the stadium ... :|

Projeto de geração solar do Mineirão terá fornecedores definidos em até três semanas. Estádio contará também com reaproveitamento da água da chuva em serviços de manutenção

Uma grande, dispersa e equilibrada unidade de geração solar, referência na produção de energia fotovotaica para o Brasil, e a única entre os estádios das 12 cidades-sede da Copa’2014 que vem se materializando. Restando exatos 189 dias para o fim das obras, é assim que a Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais (Cemig) vê os 11 mil metros quadrados de placas fotovotaicas destinadas à produção suplementar de eletricidade para o novo Mineirão. Ao mesmo tempo em que soluções sustentáveis são apresentadas durante a conferência Rio+20, no Rio de Janeiro, o projeto de módulos de silício cristalino instalados entre os 88 pórticos do Gigante da Pampulha começa a ganhar forma com o edital de licitação que vai selecionar as empresas que fornecerão e instalarão o sistema.
Publicado pela Cemig no fim de maio, o edital será definido em no máximo três semanas, adianta o engenheiro Alexandre Heringer Lisboa. Gestor do programa Minas Solar 2014 – iniciativa que, entre outras atribuições, prevê uma usina solar conceitual de 50 kilowatts na Arena do Jacaré e outra no Mineirinho –, Lisboa revela que o projeto do estádio belo-horizontino poderá ser executado paralelamente ao embarque dos equipamentos. “Com a definição da licitação, para montar é rápido. Teremos um mês e meio de projeto executivo e, depois do embarque das placas, mais um mês para a montagem dos módulos. Nossa expectativa é de que a usina fique pronta até dezembro”, comenta Lisboa. A data coincide com o prazo de conclusão das obras, programada para o dia 21 do mesmo mês.
A seleção dos materiais segue diferentes critérios, uma vez que cada fabricante oferece modelos diversos. O padrão, entretanto, abre uma margem de 1,5 megawatts (MW) para a potência, além do porte. “Como cada fabricante tem um tamanho, ainda não é possível especificar a quantidade de placas, mas a potência oscila de 1,35MW a 1,62MW. As placas também têm de ter um rendimento mínimo de eficiência e conversão de energia.”
A geração, suficiente para abastecer 1.200 residências médias com consumo médio de 150 kilowatts-hora (kWh) ao mês, será distribuída à rede da Cemig devido às restrições de armazenamento. “Concentrar a energia no estádio seria caro e antiecológico, uma vez que as baterias que o alimentam são constituídas de elementos nocivos como lítio e cádmio”, justifica Lisboa, acrescentando que o modelo a ser adotado no ginásio vizinho está em fase adiantada: “O projeto básico do Mineirinho está feito, já submetemos ao governo e agora estamos fechando uma espécie de convênio, em que vamos dar algumas contrapartidas.” A potência será aproximada à do Mineirão.
Outra solução sustentável vem sendo elaborada no Governador Magalhães Pinto. Trata-se de um sistema de captação de 6 milhões de litros de água proveniente da chuva, captada na cobertura para ser direcionada a um reservatório de 6 mil metros cúbicos. De lá, a água poderá ser reaproveitada em serviços de manutenção, como a irrigação de jardins.
ACABAMENTO Com 62% da obra concluída, o Mineirão começa a receber os detalhes do acabamento interno enquanto as treliças do teto translúcido são instaladas. Camarotes e elevadores estão sendo construídos, juntamente com o piso de circulação do anel superior, as áreas sob as arquibancadas inferiores e o piso do estacionamento coberto. Bancadas e divisórias de granito foram instaladas em 50% dos bares e banheiros.
O próximo passo, afirma a Secretaria de Estado Extraordinária da Copa (Secopa), é a conclusão da entrega das peças pré-moldadas. Embora a autarquia não confirme, o gramado poderá ser adicionado já em setembro, agilizando o crescimento a tempo do Campeonato Mineiro’2013.

Brazil hope England friendly will open World Cup venue
England could face Brazil in a friendly designed to mark the re-opening of one of the 2014 World Cup's stadiums.
An upgrading of the Mineirao stadium in Belo Horizonte will be finished by 2013 and the region's state secretary thinks England would be ideal first opponents.
Sergio Barroso said: "We want England to play Brazil in a friendly in the opening match of the new stadium."
England's last match in Belo Horizonte was their infamous 1-0 defeat to the United States at the 1950 World Cup.
The stadium is undergoing reconstruction work to transform it into a state-of-the-art 65,000 capacity venue capable of staging the opening match of the 2014 World Cup.
But there are concerns that Brazilian FA President Ricardo Teixeira may not allow such a warm-up friendly to take place, given his recent comments about England and its media.
Teixeira, who also sits on Fifa's executive committee, said the English "were pirates who could go to hell".
The English FA's general secretary, Alex Horne, flew to Rio de Janeiro last week to improve England's relations with both Brazil and Fifa, following the fall-out from England's unsuccessful bid for the 2018 World Cup.
"We know what Ricardo Teixeira has said about the English, but the opening of the new stadium is more than just what he has said and his view of England," Barroso said.
"I am speaking to him and I am going to ask him to invite England to play here. Fifa says it is all about fair play and the good of the game so let's see what Mr Teixeira will do about it."
"England was the birthplace of football and Brazil developed the game and there are very strong links between our two footballing countries," he added.

The England football team that recently exited the European Championships departed a major tournament to greater acclaim than their counterparts in 1950.

England suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to the US in Belo Horizonte at the 1950 World Cup
Then, England came back from the World Cup in Brazil with their tails between their legs.
It is exactly 62 years ago today that the team suffered one of the biggest World Cup shocks, losing 1-0 to the USA.
That game, which many in the British media mistakenly thought had actually finished 10-1 to England, was played in the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte.
The capital of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais played host to three games, with the 10,000 who saw Joe Gaetjens score the winning goal making up the biggest crowd.
"This game is famous," says Rogerio Bertho, from Belo Horizonte's committee for the 2014 World Cup.
"It is one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.
"It is still in the memory of football fans. At the time England were one of the biggest teams in the world, playing against a team that was not well known for playing football.
"We have people in the city who were at the match, and they are always telling the story of this game."

Work on the Mineirao Stadium should be completed by December
Now the city of 2.5 million people is to play a hosting role again, as the World Cup returns to Brazil in two years' time.
Belo Horizonte is known nationally as a strategic leader in Brazil's economy and a major regional centre of commerce, with a developed industrial sector.
It is one of 12 cities chosen for the tournament, but is also one of six host cities for the Confederations Cup preparation event next year.
"We are not very well-known city internationally," says Flavia Rohlfs, also a member of the Belo Horizonte 2014 World Cup committee.
"We are a young city, only 113 years old, and we want to have our city more well-known around the world.
"The World Cup will help us with that."
It is hoped that both events will precipitate further investment in the city, the third largest in Brazil and only one hour by air from Rio and Sao Paulo.
The city's Mineirao Stadium is currently scheduled to host three Confederations Cup matches in 2013 and six matches, including a semi-final, in 2014.
The stadium - the second largest covered football stadium in Brazil - is being almost rebuilt from scratch, and work on what will be a 64,000 capacity arena should be completed by the end of the year.
The city says it is currently on schedule with its preparations, and was recently praised for its construction work in a survey commissioned by the Ministry of Sport in Brazil.

Belo Horizonte is looking for a football related tourist boost
It is hoped the football events will provide a boost to the tourism sector, with some 200,000 visitors from outside Brazil expected around the football.
"We are investing in building 40 new hotels," says Ms Rohlfs.
"It is a good opportunity for our city, and we have expectations that after the World Cup the city will experience more tourism, investment, and play host to business and trade events, as well as sporting events.
"We believe we are a good location for business events and business tourism."
In addition, the city - situated in the south-east region of Brazil - has invested 1.4bn real (£334m) in transport infrastructure.
Terminal One at the city's Confins International airport has been upgraded and a second terminal is to be built.
A second airport, Pampulha, which is a short journey from the football stadium, is also being upgraded ahead of the World Cup.
"All this should mean more jobs," Ms Rohlfs adds.

Eder is one of the most famous Brazilian players associated with Belo Horizonte
Belo Horizonte has two of the most highly rated training centres in Brazil - Cruzeiro Esporte Clube and Clube Atletico Mineiro.
And during the global tournament in 2014 the city aims to host at least one leading national football team at one of the training centres.
As well as boosting the city's sporting credentials it would also attract visitors from any footballing nation that chooses to be based in Belo Horizonte.
"We have a perfect climate for football, the World Cup will be held in the winter, which is like the European summer," says Mr Bertho.
He also points to the city's football heritage and culture, with two local football teams - Cruzeiro and Atletico Mineiro, and the players that have been produced or played in the city, including Ronaldo, Gilberto Silva, Tostao, Eder, Cerezo and Nelinho.
A delegation from Belo Horizonte has been visiting the Euro 2012 football championship in Poland to learn hosting lessons, and meeting key people from international football federations.
It has also given them the chance to sell the city to European nations.
"We have been seeing first-hand how a city handles a major sporting event such as Euro 2012 and learning from their expertise," says Ms Rohlfs,
"I was very impressed by the welcome they gave to visitors, and also their volunteering programme. It was all very interesting and useful.
"Now we have to continue with our preparations, and are very excited to be hosting games in the Confederations Cup and World Cup."

It seems that talks are still progressing. Yesterday the coach of the England squad, Roy Hodgson, and the leader of the English Football Association (FA), Adrian Bevington, came to a technical visit to sports venues and hotels in Belo Horizonte. They visit the candidate sites to host the English Team during the 2014 WC and the training centers of Atlético Mineiro and Cruzeiro.

Depois de cinco meses de negociações, o Cruzeiro chegou a um acordo com a Minas Arena, empresa vencedora da licitação para administrar o Mineirão. O clube celeste mandará 100% dos seus jogos oficiais no Gigante da Pampulha durante todo o período em que a concessionária for responsável pela administração do estádio.
Isso significa que pelos próximos 25 anos o clube celeste não jogará mais no Independência, a não ser na condição de visitante. A informação foi confirmada ao Superesportes pelo diretor de marketing do Cruzeiro, Marcone Barbosa, que não quis dar detalhes do acordo.
”O Cruzeiro chegou a um acordo e o contrato já está no departamento jurídico, tanto do Cruzeiro quanto da Minas Arena. As minutas do contrato estão sendo redigidas. A partir de 2013, nós faremos 100% dos nossos jogos oficiais no Mineirão, pelo período em que a Minas Arena explorar o estádio. Só jogaremos no Independência como visitante”, disse Marcone Barbosa.
O dirigente não quis revelar pormenores do contrato. Não se sabe se o Cruzeiro poderá usufruir o Mineirão comercialmente nem se explorará algum tipo de identidade visual no estádio. “O contrato ainda não está assinado, então vamos esperar para divulgar detalhes. O que já podemos afirmar é que a partir de 2013 jogaremos 100% dos nossos jogos oficiais no Mineirão, pelo período em que a Minas Arena explorar o estádio”.
A empresa é responsável pela gestão do estádio por 27 anos, incluindo os dois anos e meio de obras. O acordo do Cruzeiro com a concessionária, portanto, tem duração de 25 anos.

1. Informam o peso da cobertura como sendo 1,5 toneladas. Com certeza está errado (até porque comparam com um Fusca, que pesa 800kg)
2. Ao mostrar o número de títulos dos times mineiros, fizeram uma piada. Colocaram apenas os campeonatos mineiros.

Very interesting information. Just 2 points:
1. The new roof weight informed is wrong, for sure. They say that compares to 2000 of VW beatle (about 800kg each). The correct weight is about 1500 tons.
2. In the part that is listed the city teams, there is a joke. Only the regional championship is considered.

Alguem saberia me informar se:

a) qual a distancia da arquibancada com o gramado (lados e atars dos gols)

b) A parte nova da cobertura acima das treliças é feito de lona tensionada?

c) As arquibancadas ficarão niveladas com o gramado?

A grande dúvida é se conseguem instalar a cobertura completa até meio de novembro, pq depois dessa data é água direto.

No wonder Brasil is a mediocre isolated country as it is. Look at some of its people (thankfully I am not included), they think others should know their useless portuguese language even in an international forum, considering there is a thread of this same stadium in the Brazilian part of SSC.
Foreigners, you better do not come to Brazil, cause that is what you are gonna find here, unfortunately.
