Maybe I just have to visit in person, but Dallas gives me the impression of being a big overgrown town. It just seems to lack the big city dynamism in its downtown. I hope no one takes offense to this because I still want to check out the city for myself. I could probably even see myself living there.

your right. In the mid 90's, the Prospect of living in a house you owned took the people who lived down town by storm and my of them moved to the suburbs of Plano, Irving, McKenny, etc. Also, in the 70'2. Everyone had the idea of a tunnel system connecting every single building under ground and no one walked the streets. This idea came half true. Everyone who works down town lives in the Suburbs, so after 6pm and on the weekends, DT Dallas looks empty. The Downtown housing market is over priced and down town entertainment (Movies, Bowling, Baseball, Malls, etc) are all outside the Central business district. So, DownTown Dallas looks bare and empty.

Exactly, a lot of other cities, for example Fort Worth, have more vibrant downtowns with more entertainment. But unlike Dallas, Fort Worth doesn't have a lot of other bustling districts outside of downtown like Dallas does. Alot of the more dynamic parts of Dallas are outside of downtown such as uptown, West Village, Oak Lawn, Bishop Arts/Oak Cliff, The Village, Mockingbird Station, Greenville, Lakewood etc. Those areas don't have all the pretty tall buildings like downtown does though so that's why you see downtown more. On that note, downtown is becoming more of a lively district compared to what it was. Regardless, awesome pics, love the nightime shots!

I just moved here and I got the same impression that downtown was empty and people were explaining to me that no one really lived there so i guess that that is true..on a more random note we just moved to the highland village area and there is a railroad track that goes over lake lewisville that is never used and i was told that they were turning that into a DART line thats goin to go from downtown dallas to denton, does anyone know anything about this or when it will be done? no one seems to really know

I don't know about it reaching Lake Lewisville but I know the new Green Line which is currently under construction and coming along nicely will reach from southeast to Dallas to Carrollton in the northwest (right by Lewisville.) This website will give you more detailed information along with the Orange Line now under construction:

http://www.dart.org/about/expansion/greenlinemap.asp

Also I believe the finish out date will be 2011 with stops opening this year and next year.

OK, thanks for that info. I kinda figured that the more vibrant areas might be outside of the downtown core. But DT Dallas sure looks like it has a lot to work with, so hopefully things will continue to turn around for it.

nawww, i don't feel that way, although there's several "dynamic" areas aside from downtown. Dallas has plenty of big city dynamism downtown...it's shown better in my other Dallas thread i think. this one's more laid back.

Thanks for sharing all these great shots! Always liked Dallas, really nice city, nice vibe, nice people, and IMO is actually quite underrated among the bigger cities of the US.

Would love to see lots more shots of Dealey Plaza please! :D :cheers1:

The rail line that parallels I-35E will be the DCTA A-Train (http://www.mya-train.com). This will be a 21-mile commuter rail line connecting Denton to the DART Green Line in Carrollton and opening in December 2010. The Lewisville Lake Station will serve Highland Village/North Lewisville at Garden Ridge Boulevard and I-35E.

Hi Krazeeboi. I moved from Charlotte last year to Dallas. IMO Dallas is reminds me somewhat of a more ubanized, much larger version of Charlotte. It feels and looks at street level a little more urban the Atlanta (expect maybe midtown) but larger than Atlanta in that it's built up areas extend further from the core outward. Downtown is relatively quiet compared to some cities it's size but was a lot better than what I expected. Accross the road from downtown they have an Uptown, which is very modern, booming, large and pretty urban. There are also many nodes of smaller urban area dispersed throughout the metro area. It reminds me of a larger Charlotte also in that it has many different types of suburbs in every direction which are different and can cater to different needs one might have, just many more of them.
