View Full Version : Buildings or Skyscrapers that underwent a Renovation or Reconstruction
Jim856796 February 18th, 2009, 01:47 PM I have decided to start a thread about skyscrapers and buildings that have ever underwent a renovation and/or a reconstruction or were converted to another use. This isn't for buildings or skyscrapers which have been repaired after they were damaged by a major disaster, there's already a thread for that.

Jim856796 February 19th, 2009, 01:46 PM The BuroCenter Niebelungenplatz in Frankfurt was unpopular in its original design until it was reclad and renamed in the 1990s. Not sure what its original name was.

And now after an extensive reclad, it looks like this:

Jim856796 March 15th, 2009, 03:16 PM What, must I post in this renovation thread all by myself?! Okay, a number of tall buildings in Brussels, Belgium received a renovation or reconstruction. Take the Finance Tower for example. It used to be a golden skyscraper with a concrete core to its north. Now after an extensive renovation, it came out looking like it won the Emporis Skyscraper of the Year award.
Jim856796 April 5th, 2009, 07:46 AM If I post some more buildings in this thread, the others will come. Here are other buildings in Brussels that were reconstructed:
De Zuidertoren / Tour du Midi (150m)

Great thread!
The former Dulski Federal Building in downtown Buffalo, NY is receiving an entire new use and face.
The new name, Avant, meaning moving forward in French, consists of a class A Embassy Suites Hotel, 2 million dollar condos (37 of them), Class A office space (already anchor tenant signed), and specialty restaurants.
The Avant has been under construction for about 2 years, and it will be open in a few short months.

ExWNY'er April 8th, 2009, 01:43 AM This is a very interesting thread. Here is an article from the San Francisco Chronicle just today that talks about a building that got re-skinned out here.

ThatDarnSacramentan April 8th, 2009, 03:03 AM Some reclads are good, but others end up making the building worse. I mean, am I the only person in the world who genuinely likes the original look of both Verizon Buildings in New York? I think replacing it all with nice pale blue glass is just ugly.
GrimFadango April 8th, 2009, 10:11 AM ^^ I second that. All that glitters is not gold.

This is a renovated/reconstructed buildings thread, not a highrise-buildings-demolished-to-make-way-for-taller-and-better-ones thread. The Mozart Tower shouldn't be in this thread.

Jim856796 July 27th, 2009, 01:25 PM This building in San Francisco underwent numerous reconstructions and additions. It was originally built in the 1890s, then an addition was built after the Earthquake and Fire. In the 1960s, a new facade was added, and in 2007 the building was restored to its original appearance and extended to 24 floors.

Jim856796 July 28th, 2009, 12:00 AM The current facade of the Astro Tower is gold. Why can't the facade of the reconstructed tower be of the same colour as the current facade?

This is the 1095 Avenue of the Americas in New York City. It went from black glass to green in the late 2000s. It should have achieved LEED-certification also.

For decorative and enhancement purposes.
Benonie June 4th, 2010, 06:58 PM The current facade of the Astro Tower is gold. Why can't the facade of the reconstructed tower be of the same colour as the current facade?
Because some stupid architects in Brussels think that it's old fashioned and ugly. That architect bureau wants to put every Brussels building into bleu glass cladding.... :bash:

Why they´re threatened with demolition?
Thanks.
Jim856796 March 11th, 2011, 01:18 AM ^^The developers made that decision for no real apparent reason. The environmentalists, legislators and citizens were worried about the waste pollution and strongly opposed the plan. A month later, due to public concerns, the developers decided not to demolish the buildings and renovate existing flats and upgrade facilities instead.

I've always loved the lollipop building. Quintessential 1960s. I'm a sucker for that time in architecture.
Jim856796 June 20th, 2011, 09:48 AM To any SSC member: Is there any difference between renovation and reconstruction?
QuarterMileSidewalk June 20th, 2011, 09:04 PM To my mind, a reconstruction, by definition, has to involve altering the structural system of the building, not just the façade. Adding or removing floors, changing the placement of support columns, for example. A renovation can affect any other system(s) in the building (façade, HVAC, plumbing, elevators, etc.), but as soon as the underlying skeleton of the building is changed, it becomes a new construction. The Tour AXA / Tour First alteration in France was a reconstruction, for instance, as some floors were reduced in size, and new floors were added, in addition to all new internal systems and the new façade. Most of the projects in this thread are not so radical, though, and would only be renovations.
Re-construct: Re-build.
Re-novate: Re-new.

Maple Leaf Gardens used to be a hockey arena. Now it's home to Canada's largest grocer, a liquor store, and a Joe Fresh (a clothing chain). On the upper levels is a new, smaller hockey rink for Ryerson University, a basketball court, and other student space.

It goes on and on and on, but you get the idea. This store is a 'foodie' wet dream. Finally, Canada has a food emporium that's second to none. Loblaws needed an update and they've certainly delivered. Hopefully, this is just a template to be repeated across Canada.

One of the few examples of renovation I like :okay:
Mostly residential buildings look better than glass and steel offices, imo.

Yeah, I agree with that. They often appear more "human" of lack of better words.

ThatOneGuy February 1st, 2013, 11:43 PM ^^I might be in the minority, but I think that recladded building looks so amazing. Better than the old brick one.
I don't like the one in front of it, old or new.
