Among those present was the group of the Davao Sportswriters Association headed by their president Charles Maxey and his father and my former editor Sir Ram Maxey. Also on hand was Davao City Sports Council vice-president Joaquin Sarabia. Sir Butch said that “win or lose” he will still remain in Davao City to help its sports development program. And I agree with him because it was here in Davao that I first met him many years ago while he was still a basketball player and a coach at the old PTA gym. Sir Butch was both a coach and player for the Fuji Xerox team just like the legendary PBA superstar-turned politician Robert “Big J” Jaworski. When he became a full-time sports director and coach of the Ateneo de Davao University, I also covered him and saw how he had worked hard for the good of his athletes and the school. For many years, he also trained and helped develop young basketball players with the Basketball Scientific Training Center (BSTC), his own-local version of the MILO BEST Center. In fact, BSTC had more students than the BEST Center because it was more affordable. Sir Butch was more than a coach for he was also a father, big brother and a good friend to the students and parents. He would always share his knowledge not only in basketball but also in life being a former seminarian and a good family man. His wife Ate Mercy has always been very supportive and loving together with their children Omar, Farrah and Joshua. He eventually became the first Commissioner from Mindanao of the Philippine Sports Commission and later the PSC Chairman. And the rest is history. On Monday, Sir Butch will be making another big step in his life. But he will remain in sports for this is where he started it all. With a position in the city council, Sir Butch will be more effective and for sure sports programs will now be clearly implemented and directed. Sir Butch will make a difference being a legitimate sports leader. POSTSCRIPTS.
