Berkane (Arabic: بركان‎) is a city in the northeastern Morocco in the area of Thrifa, limited by the Mediterranean to its north, the Kiss Oued (Moroccan-Algerian border) and the wilaya of Oujda in the east, the wilaya of Nador in the west and the wilaya of Taourirt in the south. This common (county) belongs to the wilaya of Oujda. The population of the city is more than 100.000.

Berkane is considered as being the capital of citrus fruits of Morocco. It is also currently famous for being the birthplace of Hicham El Guerrouj. Also known for its farms full of clementine.

Tafoughalt a 15 km au sud de berkane constitue une véritable opportunité pour le tourisme de montagne et d'écotourisme mais il est mal exploité en matiere d'investissement

mashallah, i been there. That place lies high, maybe 1 or 2 kilometers in the mountains. there are restaurants an parks over there and there is lovely souk. Also the landscape is amazing and it's really worth a visit. I would recommend it to all the tourists. But the only thing, is that they need renovation over there, especially the facilities, like toilets.
its really a sh*thole. i hope that investors will set up a big project over there in the future. Viva Tafoghalt and Berkane!

la source intarissable du village Reggada à 10 km d'Aberkane. Reggada se trouve sur la plaineTrifa et est le chef-lieu de la faction Ayt Menqouche des Iznassen qui a donnée son nom à la fameuse danse traditionnelle "Reggada" de son vrain nom " la danse elmengouchi"

Je viens de vérifier mon acte de naissance il est bien indiqué en arabe " Province Aberkane". Pour info, Berkane a été dérivée du fameux Sidi Mhand Aberkane qui se trouve à côté de la rivière "Cherraâ" ou Ighzer ameqqrane.

Le mausolée de Sidi Mhand Aberkane qui a donné son nom à la ville. En vérite c'est l'autorité coloniale française qui a dérivé le nom " Berkane". L'administration marocaine n'a même pas fait l"effort de retranscrire le nom originel. Sidi Mhand Aberkane est un savant qui a étudié dans la ville de sciences de l'époque à savoir Telemçan. Il est mort en 1466. Il a écrit trois livres qui sont dismonibles à la bibliothèque nationale à Rabat. Pendant trés longtemps la tribu majoritaire de la Province d'Aberkane à savoir les Iznassen avait beaucoup de liens avec les tribus de l'autre côté de la frontière maroco-algérienne.

Tafoghalt, le coin le plus connu des monts Iznassen. C'est à cet endroit que les Iznassen ont rendu leurs armes face à l'armée coloniale française abondonnés par les tribus d'Angad et les officiels d'Oujda qui ont préférés de rester passifs. C'est là que les Iznassen ont été réduis à jamais au silence et à l'ignorance alors qu'ils régnaient en maître pendant des siècles sur toute la région qui va de Kebdana en passant par Ayt Bouyehyi jusqu'au monts zekkara au sud d'Oujda. Une statue a été dressé au village Tafoghalt commémorant la victoire définitive des français contre les Iznassen avec qui ils se battait depuis la fameuse bataille d'Isly de 1844. La défaite des Iznassen a permis à l'armée française d'avancer vers Taza. La lutte des Iznassen contre les français depuis leur arrivée en Algérie et avant eux contre les Turcs de Telemçane a été récompensée en donnant le nom " Iznassen" à une avenue à Rabat. L'arrivée de l'USFP au pouvoir a remplacé purement et simplement le nom de cette avenue par " Mehdi ben Berka". Une lettre de contestation a été envoyée par les concernés aux autorités. Ces erniers ont rectifié le tir en donnant le nom "Iznassen" cette fois-ci à une place dans le quartier d'Agdal de Rabat.

Sidhi Bouharya, le versant sud des monts Iznassen pas trés loin du futur Autoroute qui mène à Fès. Sidhi Bouharia fait partie de la tribu Ayt 3tiq considérée comme le noyau des tribus Iznassen. C'est aussi la tribu du fameux Haj Mimoun le chef suprême des Iznassen qui a posé beaucoup de problèmes aussi bien aux Français qu'au Makhzen entre 1830 et 1870. IL s'est fait assassiné (égorgé) lâchemnt juste à la sortie de la casbah d'Oujda plus précisément à quelques mètres de la fameuse rivière "Isly" par un contribule d'une tribu d'Angad.

La province d'Aberkane est constituée essentiellemnent des Iznassen qui occupaient les monts de même nom. Ces monts s'étendent de la frontière algérienne jusqu'au fleuve Moulouya.

Jusqu'aux années 80 toute la montagne était exclusivement berbérophone sauf une petite partie autour de la ville d'Ahfir et les villages situés entre Ahfir, Ain Sfa et Béni Drar ont abondonnés Tamazight. La darijisation dans ce coin a commencé même avant l'occupation française. C'est pourquoi Ahfir et Béni Drar sont exclusivement darijophones même si des bérbérophones y vivent. En plus Béni Drar a été rattachée purement et simplement à la province d'Oujda.

L'autre tribu de la province d'Aberkane est appellée " 3rab thrifa = Arabes de Trifa". Cette petite tribu occupe la plaine entre Saidia, Café maure et la rivière Kiss frontière maroco-algérienne. Cette tribu est originaire d'Angad qui a demandé aux Iznassen la permission d'occuper provisoirement la plaine Trifa le temps que la sécurité revienne dans l'Angad (1880). Ils y sont toujours et ne sont jamais rentrés chez eux.

La ville même d'Aberkane est actuellement bilingue amazighe et darija : la transmission de la langue amazighe aux jeunes a été interrompue pour différentes raisons sur lesquelles on ne va pas s'étendre. La ville a aussi connue une immigration massive des gens pauvres de la région ouest du Maroc et Doukkala. Il y a aussi l'installlation des Arabes Trifa dans cette ville. On peut avancer qu'Aberkane est composée de 65% Iznassen. Tous les plus de 40 ans de ces 65% de la population sont bérbérophones mais connaissent aussi la darija.


Tamazight est parlée dès qu'on s'éloigne de la ville d'Aberkane en direction de la Moulouya càd vers Nador alors que Tamizight s'efface en se rapprochant d'Ahfir et disparait complètement dans l'Angad.

La quatrième tribu des Iznassen à savoir les Ayt Waryemmech voisins des Ayt Bouyehyi de la province de Nador sont encore berbérophones et la transmission de cette langue aux enfants ne s'est pas interrompue. ILs s'installent le plus souvent dans la ville d'Aklim ou Chouihiya.


Tamazight des Iznassen est identiques à 95% de tamazight de la tribu Kebdana de la province de Nador.

You could say that Berkane is the Capital of the Ait Iznassen/Bni Snassen tribe. So most people can speak rifia but it's a bit different than in Nador or hoceima. Some say it's the original rifia because it doesn't have any spanish or french words in it only some arabic ones. Also the Darija in Berkane is like the one in Oujda.

I always thought that the Tarifit in Hoceima was the original one since it wasn't much Spanish influence there and many of them lived isolated in the mountains.
