Iran Air

Iran Air (Persian: /Farsi:ایران ایر) or locally known as (Persian: /Farsi:هواپیمائی جمهوری اسلامی ایران) is the flag carrier airline of Iran, based in Tehran and operating services to 20 scheduled and 5 charter destinations. The cargo fleet operates services to 35 international and 25 domestic destinations. Its main base is the Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport.

Its acronym, Homa (Persian: هما), is derived from two sources: the initial letters of the name in Persian: هواپیمایی ملی ایران Havapeyma'i-ye Melli-ye Iran; and from Homa, a griffin of Persian mythology.

History

Formation

In 1946, a group of businessmen founded Iran's first flag carrier under the name of Iranian Airways. Operations covered domestic and regional passenger and freight services plus a weekly freight service to Europe. The fleet consisted of Douglas DC-3s initially, supplemented by Douglas DC-4 and Vickers Viscount aircraft, later on. In 1954, the privately owned airline Persian Air Services (PAS) was established, which initially operated only freight services, followed by passenger operations between Tehran and other major cities in Iran. In 1960, PAS initiated service to several European destinations, including Geneva, Paris, Brussels and London, using Douglas DC-7C aircraft, leased from Sabena.

On 24 February 1962, Iranian Airways and PAS were merged to form the Iran National Airlines Corporation, known as Iran Air. It was as a public sector venture, that combined the assets and liabilities of the two predecessor air carriers. Among the aircraft used were Avro York, Douglas DC-3, Douglas DC-6 and Vickers Viscount. The carrier became a full member of IATA in 1964.

"Iranian Airways" was established in May 1944 and flew its first passenger flight, after World War II, from Tehran to the holy city of Mashhad. Within a period of 17 years, from 1945 to 1962, the airline developed into a major domestic carrier with a few international flights per week.

The board of ministers ratified a proposal to establish a national airline on 10 February 1961. Following this decision, on 24 February 1961, "Iranian Airways" and "Pars Airways", a private airline established in 1954, merged to form the new airline "Iran Air", using the "HOMA" bird as a symbol.

Golden age

In 1965, Iran Air took delivery of its first jet aircraft, the Boeing 727-100, followed by the Boeing 737-200 in 1971, the stretched Boeing 727-200 in 1974 and three variants of Boeing 747s (747-100, -200 and SP), starting in 1975. By the mid-1970s, Iran Air was serving cities in Europe with non-stop and one-stop flights (there were over 30 flights per week to London alone).

On 8 October 1972, Iran Air placed an order with British Aircraft Corporation for two Concorde supersonic jets, plus one option. These orders were canceled in April 1980, in the wake of the Iranian Revolution, making Iran Air the last airline to cancel its Concorde orders.

On 29 May 1975, the Tehran to New York City route was inaugurated, first with Boeing 707s, making a stop-over at London Heathrow Airport. Shortly thereafter, the route was converted into a non-stop flight using Boeing 747SPs, making Iran Air the second Middle Eastern carrier (after El Al), to offer non-stop service to New York. With this flight, Iran Air set a new world record in time and distance for a non-stop, scheduled long-haul flight (12 hours and 15 minutes, 9,867 km - 6,131 mi - 5,328 nm). In 1978, the airline acquired six Airbus A300B2k aircraft for use on its domestic trunk and busy regional routes. By the end of that year, Iran Air was serving 31 international destinations stretching from New York City to Beijing and Tokyo. Plans were made to offer direct services to Los Angeles and to Sydney, for which the airline's long range Boeing 747SP aircraft were ideally suited. This would have allowed Iran Air to use Tehran, as a midway point between East and West, because of its home base's favorable geographical location. Such plans were never realized.

By the late 1970s, Iran Air was the fastest growing airline in the world and one of the most profitable. By 1976, Iran Air was ranked second only to Qantas, as the world’s safest airline, having been accident free for at least ten consecutive years. Although both airlines were accident free, Iran Air came second only because of fewer operational hours flown compared to Qantas. Prior to this ranking, a fatal accident occurred on 25 December 1952, in which 27 of the 29 passengers on board perished, when their Douglas DC-3 crashed on landing.

After the Iranian Revolution

In the wake of the Iranian Revolution in February 1979, Iran Air began to reorganize its international operations, discontinuing service to a range of foreign destinations. Tehran was designated as the only official gateway to Iran, while Shiraz could be used as an alternate, only in case of operational requirements. All other cities in Iran lost their international status. However, in recent times, many of Iran's major city airports have regained a minor international status. These direct international flights using airports in other major Iranian cities currently serve regional countries.

The last departure from New York was on 7 November 1979. The last scheduled flight from Tehran to New York City on 8 November 1979 was diverted at the last minute to Montreal, prompted by an embargo suddenly imposed by the U.S. government. Subsequently, the Boeing 747SPs were used on the airline's European and Asian routes. In 1980, the first of six new Airbus A300-B2Ks joined the fleet.

After the start of the Iran–Iraq War in September 1980, Iran Air's domestic and international operations were often subject to cancellation and irregularity, in line with the wartime situation. This continued until August 1988, when a cease-fire agreement took effect. Right from the start of the Iran–Iraq War, Abadan, the gateway to Iran's oil-producing region, lost all its air links, because the airport had to be closed.

The year 1981 saw the name of the airline changed to The Airline of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Iran Air carried 1.7 million passengers in that year. In 1990, the first of six Fokker 100 jets was added to the fleet and five more were added later on. In 2001, the airline bought six second-hand Airbus A310 aircraft (five -200 and one -300 series), since the U.S. authorities blocked the planned purchase of any new Airbus A330 units. In 2005, the carrier bought two Airbus A300-600s from Olympic Airlines. In the wake of the growing tension, between the U.S. and Iranian governments, over Iran's nuclear program, the plan to supply Boeing spare parts or aircraft, to upgrade the aging fleet of Iran Air, was blocked by the USA and members of the EU. However a new agreement between Iran and the United States at the end of 2006, has changed that and allowed an overhaul of Iran Air's fleet. The airline is wholly owned by the Government of Iran and has 8.500 employees.

Iran Air adds increases Heathrow to Tehran frequency

Due to increasing demand Iran Air have added a fourth weekly flight from London Heathrow to Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport and have upgraded the aircraft type serving the route to the larger Boeing 747 on the other three days.

This summer flights to Tehran will now operate non-stop from Heathrow Terminal 3 on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. All flights will be operated by IranAir’s Boeing 747 aircraft, with a choice of Homa (Business) Class or Economy Class seating, and a range of competitive low fares. The service will be effective from March 29 to October 24.

IranAir recently signed a service agreement with Online Flight Specialist, Alternative Airlines, to provide Online Booking and e-Ticketing services through the iranair.co.uk website.

Mr Daryoush Niknam, UK General Manager for Iran Air, said: "We are experiencing heavy demand not just for flights to Tehran, but also for onward connections to the regional cities of Mashad, Shiraz and Tabriz. The new flight and larger aircraft will enable us to offer more flexible itineraries as well as very competitive fares."

Iran Air is the flag carrier airline of the Peoples Republic of Iran, based in Tehran and operates services to 20 scheduled and 5 charter destinations.

Mahan Air

Mahan Air (Persian: هواپیمایی ماهان) is a private airline based in Tehran, Iran. It operates scheduled domestic services and international flights to the Far East, Middle East, and Europe. Its main base is Imam Khomeini International Airport, Tehran.

History

The airline was established in 1991 and began operations in 1992 as Iran's first private airline. It joined the IATA in 2001 and is owned by Mol-Al-Movahedin Organisation(Sepahe Pasdarane jomhoorie eslami) (96%). It has 1,616 employees (as of March 2007). At its operational launch in May 1993, Mahan Air had a fleet comprising two Tupolev 154 aircraft, a staff of 99 and a route network from Tehran to 2 domestic destinations. Real Mahan Air growth was initiated with the addition of Airbus A300 wide-body aircraft to the fleet in 1999 and the Airbus A310 in 2001. This enabled the airline to reach beyond regional destinations it served at that time. Currently, its route network spans 28 destinations in 12 countries and it has a fleet of 11 all Airbus aircraft. It currently hold 13% of all international flights from Iran, and 8% of the domestic market.

Mahan Air to start direct flights to the Philippines

MANILA, Philippines—To strengthen tourism and investment relations between Iran and the Philippines, the first Manila-Tehran direct flight is being eyed in the next few months, Iranian Ambassador Ali Mojtaba Rouzbehani said.

In an interview at the celebration of National Day of Iran at Mandarin Hotel on Tuesday night, he said, "We will be having direct flights from Tehran to Manila. In two or three months, it will take off."

The plan stems from air services agreement signed between the two countries last year. The air pact seeks to respond to the growing demand for flights to the Middle East, the number one destination of overseas Filipino workers.

Rouzbehani said Tehran's Mahan Air, a private airline company, is planning to have four direct flights to Manila a week. He said this may increase to 14 weekly flights to airports outside Manila, as in those in Clark and Cebu.

"We suggested to have four flights in a week. We are eyeing to expand it to 14 flights, including in other Philippine airports," he said.

Rouzbehani said the Philippines may get as many as seven million tourists from Iran once the flights take off.

"It is very important to have Iranian tourists here. I am pushing for that," he said.

Aside from Iran, the Philippines has reached new and amended air agreements with Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, The Netherlands, Canada, and Finland.

I thought Iran Air flies daily to Heathrow, since I know that when I was going there I had an option of everyday flights.

Plus below is their schedule of monthly flights to london both Iran Air and BMI from tehran's Int'l Airport website:

From where do they get spare parts for their B 747's?

TEHR_IR
February 22nd, 2009, 02:40 PM
^^Iranian planes are in very good condition and is good mantained., They buy the parts from second hand planes from europe and China even Iran Air is overhauling it's 4th 747-Sp We have good engineers, Due to sanctions imposed by the United States government, all Iranian airlines wishing to purchase US-made aircraft can only acquire aircraft, which are at least 7 years old and they only can be purchased through a third party, rather than directly from Boeing. We also produce our own Aircraft under license of Hesa like the Iran 140.

If we can acquire ourselves Boeing 747-400s why we can't get spare parts?:D
I don't think it's difficult for Iran to get spare-parts but Buying newer planes like A340,A380,... is a problem

Iran is a beautiful country and great culture. Only a few people ruling the country discourage even the more tempered to travel to Iran. Sad. Religious people should not lead a country. They can influence it of course, but to rule is the role of politicians...

I am grateful that it is the case now in Europe for long, religion is clearly separated from politics. I wish all the best to Iranians. Hope you will fly safe, even with this stupid embargo on plane parts! :)

Yes, you can clearly see what happens to people's freedom when you mix religon with politics, a true example is Iran and it's religous government :(

Kenyan Airlines May Introduce Direct Flights to Tehran

Feb. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will sign an agreement with Kenya, which will enable Kenyan Airways Ltd. to introduce direct flights to the Iranian capital, Tehran, Kenyan Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula said.

The two countries will also sign cooperation accords in the fields of water, health and the avoidance of double tax during Ahmadinejad’s two-day visit, which begins on Feb. 24, Wetangula told reporters today in the capital, Nairobi.

Negotiations that will enable Kenyan beef to be exported to Iran are at an advanced stage, he added.

Kish Air

Kish Air (Persian: کیش ایر) is an airline based in Tehran, Iran. It operates international, domestic and charter services as a scheduled carrier. Its main base is Mehrabad Airport, Tehran.

History

The airline was established on December 16, 1989 and started operations in 1989. It is owned by Kish Free Zone Organisation (79%), Kish Investment and Development (11%) and Kish Development and Servicing (10%). It has 303 employees (at March 2007).

Kish Air is also closely connected with a chain of professionally maintained and well regarded English language institutes located in major cities throughout Iran bearing its name. They were originally established solely to teach their own employees English, but were eventually opened up to the public as demand sharply increased for quality English language instruction. Though the airline itself ceased ownership of the institutes long ago, the chain retains the name and Kish Air pilots and flight attendants continue to be sent there for language instruction.

To start its passenger operations, after receiving temporary operations permission, the airline leased 2 aircraft (one Tupolev Tu-134 and one Antonov An-24) from Bulgaria Airlines on a wet lease basis. Kish Air received its air operator certificate (AOC) in 1990 after demonstrating it's competence to the Civil Aviation authorities, during its first year of operations, thus becoming the first private company to receive its AOC from Civil Aviation of Iran. At this time the company began wet leasing three Tupolev Tu-154Ms from Russian leasing companies, returning the previously leased Bulgarian aircraft. The company also wet leased two Yakovlev Yak-42D aircraft from Russia. Towards the end of 1992 the company was at the verge of bankruptcy, and most of the key managers were replaced by a new team, most of whom are still running the company successfully today. In 1999 Kish Air having enough financial strength, decided to replace its wet leased fleet with dry leased and purchased aircraft, and within a year was able to operate 2 dry leased and one purchased Tupolev Tu-154 aircraft, and hire and train the required air crew and maintenance personnel. At present Kish Air is operating a fleet of six medium range McDonnell Douglas MD-83 and Tupolev Tu-154M and six short range Fokker 50 on its domestic and international routes.

Tehran-Algiers direct flight to become operational

http://www.nettechnowebdesign.com/Algeria.jpg

Algiers - Direct flight between Tehran and Algiers will become operational in the near future, said director general of the country's civil aviation organization. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a ceremony to inaugurate Algiers-Beijing air route, Vahid Bu Abdullah added that New York-Algiers flight will also become operational.

Iran's Ambassador to Algeria Hossein Abdi-Abyaneh had earlier announced the news.

Several agreements in various fields including transportation were signed during President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's visit to the country in August 2007.

Direct air link between the two countries will help develop bilateral ties which has always been underlined by the two countries' officials.

^^yes I read somewhere that the flights are always 70-80% full they are mostly Iranian students and Businessmen there is also a number of Iranian Tourists that go to Kuala Lumpur since KL is an very popular Tourist destination in Asia for the Iranians. now they are operating the 747-Sp to KL but from the summer it will be an 747-286BM, also Iran and Malaysia haves an strong economical and trade relation. But I can't really say that there are more Iranians on the flight Than Malaysians since I'm never used the route but I think it's fifty fifty.

Saha Air

Saha Air Lines (Persian: ساها) is an airline based in Tehran, Iran. It operates domestic passenger services with three 707s and occasional cargo charters with 747s. It was established in 1990 and is wholly owned by the Iranian Air Force. Regular domestic flights include daily flights from its base at Tehran's Mehrabad airport to Mashhad, Kish Island, Assoulyeh and its aircraft also make regular appearances at Shiraz.

It is notable for being the last airline in the world to operate the Boeing 707 in passenger service. These particular aircraft are ex air-to-air tanker 707s, delivered in 1976 and pressed into passenger service due to sanctions by the USA which have stopped Iran acquiring new aircraft since 1979. Airline enthusiasts (including American citizens) make regular pilgrimages to Iran, including actual organised tour groups, to fly on the antique and well-maintained 707s. Due to their previous lives as military aircraft, the 707s have spent long periods in storage or only operating sporadic military missions, so for airline transports they have a very low number of hours on their airframes, about 25,000 hours each, meaning they may fly on for some time (the average life of a jet airliner is 100,000 hours).

Plane crash in Iran kills five onboard

http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=85818&sectionid=3510212

an aircraft being used for training has crashed on approach to the airport of suburban Isfahan, killing all five people on board.

The crash occurred when the plane intended to land in Isfahan's Shahin-Shar airport on Sunday afternoon. Its crew including a pilot and four co-pilots were immediately killed in the incident.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

According to Tabnak Website, the plane was an Antonov An-140, a short-range turboprop. A Russian design, the vessel is being produced in Iran under license by HESA as Iran-140. It carries a maximum of 52 passengers.

The country's aviation system functions under severe constraints ever since the US imposed tough sanctions against Iran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution which toppled a Washington-allied monarch in the country. Aircraft parts are one banned item.

This is the same plane that crashed

Aviation industry to be privatized: IPO chief

http://www.tehrantimes.com/index_View.asp?code=190174

EHRAN -- Flag carrier Iran Air and its subsidiary, Iran Air Tour, have been put on the list of state-run companies to be privatized as part of the program to privatize the country’s aviation industry.

Iran Privatization Organization (IPO) Director Gholamreza Kord Zangeneh announced the plan here on Sunday, adding that the Homa Hotel Group and some airports are also on the privatization list.

Except for the Civil Aviation Organization, which is the regulating body of the country’s air transportation industry, all other state-run aviation companies are going to be transferred to the private sector, IRINN quoted Kord Zangeneh as saying.

In 2007, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei called on government officials to speed up the implementation of the policies outlined in the amendment to Article 44 of the Constitution, which calls for the privatization of state-run companies.

According to the Fourth Five-Year Economic Development Plan (2005-2010), the Iran Privatization Organization, affiliated to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance, is responsible for setting prices and offering shares of state-run companies on the privatization list to the general public

Russia delivers Tupolev's Tu-204 to Iran

http://www.presstv.com/photo/20090303/fazeli20090303043444171.jpg

Russia's Ilyushin Finance Company (IFC) is expected to deliver five Tupolev Tu-204 SM passenger aircrafts to the Islamic Republic.

"Russia was due to deliver five Tupolev Tu-204 SM planes to Iran in the first shipment, but there was a delay," IRNA quoted the deputy general director and technical director of Ilyushin Finance Company, Yuri Ostrovsky, as saying on Monday.

"We are now ready to deliver the planes to Iran based on an expedited time-table," he added.

The Tupolev Tu-204 is a twin-engine medium range Russian airliner capable of carrying 212 passengers. First introduced in 1989, it is considered broadly equivalent to the Boeing 757.

Iran plans to purchase passenger aircrafts to renovate its aviation fleet.

Ilyushin Finance Co. was founded in 1999. Member of 'United Aircraft Corporation' (UAC) of Russia, it carries a decade of experience in civil aircraft sales and leasing.

Then why is Iran Aseman Airlines storing so many Fokkers and ATRs?: http://www.gartal.com/page/iranaseman.aspx On this website http://www.gartal.com/page/fleet.aspx that shows an upto date record of active and stored aircraft in the Iranian Airline industry you can see IranAir and Mahan Air also have aircraft stored just doing nothing.
Could it be the global recession is hurting the Iranian airline industry maybe?

TEHR_IR

^^beceause those planes are also getting older and we haven't spare parts for those planes i guess....but "we" are trying to keep wath we have and Mahan Air Airbus 300B2 and a320 is stored because of damage on their Computer system.
That's the reason why Iran has ordered
50: Antonov-148 and 35 Tupolev 204-120s and a contract for another 100 Tupolev 204s.
We have also other Airline companies like:

-Iran Air
-Mahan Air
-Kish Air
-Iran Aseman
-Saha Airlines
-Eram Air
-Taban Air

Yes but that still doent explain why the Iran Aseman F100s and ATRs are stored. There is no problem with getting parts or servicing for those. Iran Aseman can even send its F100s to Amsterdam for overhaul if it wants. Thats why they are so popular in Iran. Maybe they just have too many and need larger aircraft.

I think Iran Air should be more aggressive to attract transit passengers..

There are many from KL travelling to Europe using Emirates, Etihad, THAI, Qatar, GulfAir, Singapore, but I never heard of anyone travelling by IranAir, despite having many daily flights to Europe!

Well the problem is that Iran has a bogeyman image in many countries around the world. There has been a very effective media campaign against Iran by western governments and large western media corporations. People would be scared to fly with IranAir even if there is no reason to be, because of this false image that has built up over the last thirty years.

KLM not anymore they are replacing them by embraers..
but for now Iran Air did order newer planes so....
and maybe the storage of this Fokkers where because the flying hours where done...
and almost all the fokkers that are stored are F28 they are pretty old....

But think, who wants a transit in Tehran....you and me know it's safe but the media is giving the world a bad image about Iran and therefor people don't want use Tehran as transit. and all of the womens that "would" transit than must wear a head scarf do they really want that? and IKIA is not big enough the airport is still in phase 1....
but their are many people from Germany/UK, the Netherlands that use Mahan air from Dusseldorf,Germany to Bangkok and Delhi with a 2 hour transit in IKIA.
Iran,Tehran is geographicly the best place for connecting east and west and that was also the plan when the Shah was in Power but after the revolution everything changed and they maked Dubai as International hub. it's simply we can't give people the freedom they want at the airport.....
and Airlines like Emirates are newer.....

If you look the 3 Aseman F100s are only from 1992/93, the 3 ATRs are from 1992,2000 and 2002. They also stored a B727 that is 5/6 years newer than the ones IranAir still fly. No way are they high time frames. Anyway if Iranian airlines retired aircraft because of high flight hours then the B747-200s, B727-200s and A300Bs from the seventies would have been retired many years ago. I think passenger numbers must be dropping.

^^it can be but when I want to book flight's they are always full...xD

I know! And I think half the problem is Iranian travel agents. They wouldnt know good customer service if it hit them in the face! They sit behind those desks with such an air of arrogance and seem not to care less about you or your travels. It seems they have a total no can do approach to most things. For example I go into a travel agents in Gonbad e Kabous and ask to book a train seat to Bandar Abbas from Mashhad next week. And the answer is 'We dont reserve train tickets' (even though they have the RAJA sign in the window and the train ticket printer behind them) or 'There is no such train' (There is!).
Me: 'So can I book a flight?'
TA:'No, their full.'
Me: 'How about from Tehran?'
TA: 'No, their full.'
So after I try all the travel agents in Gonbad I tell my friend about the problem. He says he knows someone that is a travel agent and he takes me to someone that ive already spoken to. There is a long conversation and the girl with the sullen face, caked in makeup, reluctantly says 'Leave it with me then.' I go back after a few hours and she looks at me as if to say 'what!?'
Me: 'Er ..the flights?.. Remember?..
TA: Oh! Just a moment.
She picks up the phone, motions me in an offhand way to sit and starts making a series of lengthy phone calls that have long pauses where she twirls about in her chair with that bored, couldnt give a shit look on her face. Eventually she comes off the phone starts tapping at the computer and says to me not even looking in my direction 'I have managed to squeeze you onto a flight from Tehran on Tuesday. You are lucky. I think there was a cancellation.'
I get the IranAir A300 at THR on the tuesday and its almost empty!!:bash:
This same type of experience is repeated again and again to different degrees. If you want a train ticket its: 'Yes we can do that for you. Come back tomorrow when we have paper for the machine/the train ticket girl is in/the booking system is running/[no explanation].' or 'We do train tickets but just not right now/we've never done an international one before. I dont think we can do that.':wallbash:
I seem to spend alot of time in Iran traipsing from one travel agents to another or sitting waiting in them for someone to be bothered to process my booking. I swear I am very nice and polite and its not just something about me that makes them want to make it hard for me or reject my business! When Im sitting there in their swanky shop, I see repectable looking middle aged men approach them in a humble, grovelling kind of way as if they are asking for something like a desperatlely needed loan. They are just travel agents but in Iran they seem like lords of their realm condemning whoever they dont like the look of to long, uncomfortable bus/car journeys.
Ive felt so angry sometimes after sitting for ages trying to book something to no avail and for some stupid reason they cant do it, that I want to break their model planes, knock over their racks of brochures and throw their swivel chairs across the desks at them. ...But I bite my tongue.
Sorry that was supposed to be a short reply but turned into a :bleep:

example: we brought a Belgian friend to Iran and the travel agent said yes beceause she is a tourist she must pay 50.000 thousand Tomans more I was like OMG !!!! how low can you be!!

alitezar
March 6th, 2009, 04:33 PM

I know, unfortunately in Iran and most of Middle East there is no such thing as customer service, it's just the culture of that area and I totally undrstand it can be frustrating at times.

Tehran's aviation sale demands bold action

Iran's aviation sector is crying out for investment and reorganisation. Tehran will not reap benefits unless it keeps its privatisation on track.

The economic climate may not be advantageous, but Iran's move to restructure its aviation sector, throwing key assets open to public ownership, is long overdue.

The aviation industry is just the latest sector to be put forward for privatisation by Tehran since Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei launched a national initiative to sell off state-owned assets in 2006.

Since then, progress has been sporadic at best. A 5 per cent stake in Telecoms Company of Iran (TCI) was floated in August 2008 after a series of delays, while the part privatisation of marine services group Tidewater in the summer of last year has been marred by an ongoing dispute over the distribution of the proceeds.

Middle East governments, like those in other parts of the world, often embrace privatisation in principle, but find the reality of relinquishing stakes in national assets harder to deal with. Moreover, the bureaucracies of the region are often not geared up for the level of co-ordinated decision-making required to move the process along rapidly.

Tehran will be keen to avoid repeating the mistakes of Riyadh, where the privatisation of Saudi Arabian Airlines drags on at a glacial pace, with the toughest decisions continually deferred for another day.

National airlines around the region are notoriously debt ridden and overstaffed. Many are poorly managed. Turning these operations around is not easy, particularly given the pride still invested in state carriers. But Royal Jordanian, for example, has shown that it can be done quickly and effectively if tough decisions are taken and the process is not allowed to become bogged down in sentiment and bureaucracy.

Iran's diplomatic isolation from the West makes its task that much harder, but the country's aviation sector is crying out for new investment and reorganisation. Taking the decision to privatise is one thing, but Tehran will not reap the benefits unless it acts boldly to keep the process on track.

Iran, Russia to build 100 Tupolevs

http://www.presstv.ir/photo/20090401/bageri_d20090401213523703.jpg

Moscow and Tehran are negotiating the details of a joint project to build 100 passenger carriers of the Tupolev Tu-204 series in Iran.

First deputy of the Tupolev aircraft manufacturer Sergey Galperin said that the federation of Russian aircraft manufacturers and Iranian Aerospace Industries Organization would carry out the project.

The Tupolev Tu-204 is a twin-engine medium range Russian airliner capable of carrying 212 passengers. First introduced in 1989, it is considered to be the equivalent to the Boeing 757.

Ria Novosti quoted Galperin as saying on Wednesday that the Russian Ilyushin Finance Company and Iran AirTours airline were negotiating the delivery date of the five Tu-204 SM aircraft which was previously set for 2010.

This is not Iran's first attempt at assembling passenger planes. After purchasing the production license for 100 Antonov An-140 from Ukraine in 2000, Iran built its first Iran-140 passenger plane in 2003.

Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force

The Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force (IRIAF) (Persian: نیروی هوایی ارتش جمهوری اسلامی ایران) is the aviation branch of the Iranian armed forces.

History

The IRIAF came into being when the former Imperial Iranian Air Force (IIAF) was re-named following the Islamic Revolution in Iran, in February 1979.

This "new" Iranian air force largely inherited the equipment and structure of the former IIAF, even losing most of its leading officers in the course of post-revolutionary chaos, as well as due to the prosecution of those considered as loyal to the Shah, pro-U.S. or elsewhere by the new government in Tehran.

Due to strained relations with the west, Iran had to procure new equipment from Brazil, Russia and the People's Republic of China. Since the Revolution, the exact composition of the IRIAF is hard to determine, but estimates do exist. Many aircraft belonging to the Iraqi Air Force took refuge in Iran during the Persian Gulf War in 1991, and many were put into service with the IRIAF or taken apart for spare parts.

Due to the continuous spare parts shortages faced by the air force, a decision was made in the late 1980s to develop a local aerospace industry to support the air force.

In 2002, Iran with the co-operation of Ukraine, successfully started the manufacture of the Iran-140; a licence-built version of the Antonov An-140 transport aircraft. Simultaneously, Iran began construction of two 100% domestically-produced fighters, upgraded using technology from the F-14 Tomcat and the F-5 Tiger II. The fighters have been named the Azarakhsh and the Shafaq.

Since then the country has also become self-sufficient in the manufacture of helicopters. The country claims that it is capable of producing the old U.S. AH-1 Cobra gunship. Additionally, Iran also produces Bell Helicopter Bell 212 and Bell 206 helicopters in serial production. These are known respectively as the Shabaviz 2-75 and the Shabaviz 206.

Current composition

In the last several years several new airfields have been constructed in central- and eastern Iran. Some of these facilities have since seen full-scale deployments of IRIAF units, and it now appears that at least two became permanent "Tactical Fighter Bases" (TFBs). These are the first such bases established since 1979. Except new airfields, with Chinese support, the IRIAF constructed also a number of new early warning radar sites around the country. Its ability to control the national airspace, however, remains limited - mainly due to the rugged terrain and lack of airborne early warning assets.

Aside from maintaining 14 TFBs, the IRIAF operates numerous temporary detachments on several minor airfields around the country. Ex-Iraqi Mirage F.1EQs, usually based at TFB.14, near Mashhad, were frequently seen over the Persian Gulf, in 2005 and 2006.

Iran to Stage Largest Air Show Tomorrow

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian Army Air Force is planning to display the defensive power of the Islamic Republic of Iran by staging the largest air show in the history of the country on Saturday.

The IRI Air Force plans to display 140 aircrafts from 13 different types in its Saturday show to mark the country's Army Day which will also include parades by other units of the Iranian army.

Young pilots who have received all their military trainings, including flying lessons, at Iranian centers will display the country's military power with such fighter jets as F4, F5, Azarakhsh and Saeqeh.

Tens of fighter jets due to take part in the Saturday air show completed their last exercise sorties in the presence of senior Army commanders at Tehran's Air Base 1 on Thursday.

Squadrons of F4, F5, F7, F14, Saeqeh (Thunderbolt), Azarakhsh (Lightening), Suko 24 and Mig 29 fighter jets along with other military planes, including Airborne Warning aircrafts, Booing 707 and 747, C130 and P3F are scheduled to fly over the Iranian capital Tehran during the show.

Earlier in February Iranian Deputy Defense Minister General Ahmad Vahidi said that Iran will produce more modern military planes after its success in building 'Saeqeh' (Thunderbolt) and 'Azarakhsh' (Lightening) fighter jets.

"We have built some fighter jets, including Azarakhsh and Saeqeh, in our country that could fly and it is natural that we won't stop and will take the necessary steps for their development," Vahidi said.

Saeqeh, a joint product of the Iranian Air Force and the Defense Ministry, went on display as part of the Iranian air force's fleet during the military parades on the Army Day last year.

Vahidi also announced that Iran has produced spy planes with the flying range of 1,000 km.

Meantime, Lieutenant Commander of infantry division 30 of the Iranian Army's Ground Force General Sirous Razmgir announced in remarks in the northern province of Mazandaran on Thursday that a home-made Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is also due to go on display during the Saturday air show.

Iran Stresses Air Link with Zimbabwe

http://media.farsnews.com/Media/8710/Images/jpg/A0585/A0585022.jpg

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Rasoul Momeni underlined the importance of an airline link between Tehran and Harare.

Momeni said on Friday that Iran is eager to establish air links with Zimbabwe to improve accessibility between the two countries.

The Iranian ambassador further reiterated that creation of air links would greatly assist in rejuvenating Zimbabwe's weakening tourism sector, and added, "The importance of establishing airline links between the two countries cannot be underestimated."

Earlier in January Iranian tour operators signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority and Inbound Tour Operators Association of Zimbabwe to market the two countries' tourist destinations.

The signing of the MoU followed a five day tour of the country's resort centers by Iranian tour operators.

This understanding comes as a first step in fostering relations between the Iranians and local tour operators in the promotion of the tourism industry, officials of the two sides said at the time.

Currently, Air Zimbabwe flies to Dubai where it parks its aircraft for about 18 hours yet Iran is only an hour away.

The Iranian ambassador told the Herald newspaper that Tehran desires to assist in turning around the fortunes of Zimbabwe's tourism industry and is ready to "exchange experience and establish cooperation in the area of tourism and hospitality."

The envoy, however, emphasized the need for Zimbabwe's local tourism industry to offer quality service and reasonable rates.

IRAN: Airport fiasco in Shiraz costs official his job

Press TV - The Director General of Shiraz airport has been dismissed from his post for holding a plane en route from Shiraz to Tehran during take-off.

Iran Air Flight 234 was stopped during take-off on Friday morning, so that the Iranian vice president for scientific and technology affairs, Sadeq Vaez-Zadeh, could board the plane.

The plane was scheduled for take-off at 10:45 am local time but finally took off at 11:17.

The incident deeply shocked some 15 European tourists aboard the aircraft.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad responded by issuing the boot order for Shiraz airport official Majid Hejazi.

Shiraz, located in the southwest of Iran, is the sixth most populous city in the country and the capital of Fars Province.

Bomb discovery forces return of Iranian plane

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — An Iranian airliner was forced to return to a southern airport minutes after takeoff when a homemade bomb was found aboard, said state television, in an incident a security official called a "sabotage operation."

The report said the bomb was found in a toilet, but gave no other details on the device. The incident took place late Saturday night.

As Iran prepares for its June 12 presidential election, there have been a number of violent incidents. A bombing Thursday at a mosque in another southern city of Zahedan killed 25 people and wounded 80. A day later, a shooting at President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's campaign office in the same city injured three people.

Air guards chief Mohammad Hasan Kazemi, speaking to the official IRNA news agency, left open the possibility of a link between those two incidents and the package on the airliner. He said "enemies" were trying to create a sense of hopelessness among Iranians before the election.

The plane, carrying 140 passengers, returned to an airport in the southwestern city of Ahvaz 15 minutes after takeoff Saturday after a passenger reported a suspicious package. The plane belongs to one of Iran's commercial airlines, Kish Air.

The flight was from Ahvaz to the capital, Tehran, about 500 miles (800 kilometers) to the northeast.

A news web site, YaariNews, which is close to former President Mohammad Khatami, said Khatami was planning to come back to Tehran from Ahvaz about the same time, but he changed his schedule and departed earlier.

It was unclear whether Khatami ever intended to travel on the Kish Air flight.

Khatami is campaigning for Mir Hossein Mousavi, the leading pro-reform challenger to Ahmadinejad.

wow what a great way to ruin a strategic component of the air force by turning the 707 tankers into airliners. Did they not realize they just damaged their operation hours of their fighters by doing that? I guess the people in charge have no clue what they are doing.

Also, their "domestic" made fighter jets are nothing but re-shaped F-5s. I do give them credit for being able to know enough about structural importance and being able to turn the F-5 into a twin tail fighter, but it's far from a domestic made plane.

One of the members here mentioned something in the lines of the Mehrabad Airport being an aviation museum and I really got a kick out of that. Who ever said it, your comment is very well put. I understand that they are under sanctions and cannot acquire modern new planes, but that does not mean purchase more older planes and add them to the already aging fleet. They should simply cancel all domestic flights and use other sources such as Trains or Buses for traveling inside the country, that way they will be able to focus most of their fleet for international flights and focus other assets in keeping their air force air worthy and not hindering it with ruining air tankers. What are they going to do next, take their 747 tankers and turn them into passenger planes?

Still does not defeat the fact they took a military plane and turned it into a passenger plane. I don't know how much you know about military aircraft, but fuel tankers are a very important asset to an air force.

If their trains can't handle the amount of traffic and passengers, well than they need to build more rail roads.

200 brand new TU204s? When their last combat aircraft purchased was the Mig 29 how many years ago? They seriously have their priorities straight for sure. While UAE is stockpiling new fighters.

I believe everything you said when I see the so called planes in Iranian airports/air fields with Iranian insignias. For now they are all talk and we both know how much talk the Iranian media does. They talk about building a lot of things but we don't see much of it. I'm sorry, why don't they show an actual picture of their so called "domestic" fighter jets in action? or how about actual footage of their Zolfagar main battle tank? Even their so called "domestic" made missiles are NoDong North Korean missiles which are a modified Scud C. I wouldn't count on the dates mentioned either, I mean how many dates has the Iranian Media gave regarding the start up of the Bushehr reactor?

And I don't know where you got the information about the 50 military jets to be purchased, but Iran has not made any combat aircraft purchase in decades and does not plan on purchasing anything in the upcoming years. And even if they purchase any combat aircraft, the aircraft alone is not going to do anything. They need to acquire training for the so called fighters, maintenance infrastructure and parts.

Yes all the UAE equipment that is being purchased is western US aircraft, modern, up to date. You just mentioned that Iran in fact has a big rail road infrastructure, then they need to put it into use and stop relying so heavily on airlines for domestic transportation.

I enjoyed going through this thread and viewing the picture of all the aircraft that is flown by the Iranian Airlines but when I hit the page regarding the pictures of the Boeing 707 tankers being turned into passenger planes I was in shock.

TEHR_IR
July 7th, 2009, 10:58 PM
^^ No it's a Persian Symbol and it's not pegasus..

http://traumwerk.stanford.edu/archaeolog/persepolis%20griffin.jpg

Persepolis was the capital of the mighty ancient Persian
Empire. It was a beautiful city, adorned with precious artworks
of which unfortunately very little survives today. When
Alexander the Great conquered the city, he gave orders to the
Macedonians to destroy it, in the similar fashion as they had
already done in with Thebes when Greece was conquered.
The palace of the Persian Achaemenid kings was burned, the
city was looted and its citizens massacred, in one of the most
brutal and savage acts in history. Most of the sculptures were
also destroyed and what remains is very little that still testifies
of the great artistic abilities of the ancient Persians. The
Persian Horse is one such proof of the greatness of the
ancient Persian art. This is a hand carved sculpture of an
ancient Persian horse, one of the many that once decorated
the palaces of the Persian "kings of the kings". It was first
carved in clay, and then it was produced in cast stone. Ancient
Sculpture Gallery is proud to offer for the first time ever to the
admirer of the much ignored and underestimated beautiful
Persian art, a unique opportunity to own a unique Persian
masterpiece.

Iran, Kuwait's Private Airline Launch New Route

Under a newly signed agreement between Kuwait's Jazeera Airways and Shahid Beheshti airport in Isfahan, direct flights will be carried out between the central Iranian city and Kuwait city.

The agreement means that now almost all major Iranian cities namely Tehran, Shiraz, Mashhad and Isfahan will have direct flights to Kuwait, the Islamic republic news agency reported.

The direct flights between the Persian Gulf state and the central city of Isfahan are scheduled on odd days, the first of which was carried out on Sunday.

Kuwait's Jazeera Airways was established in 2004 as the country's first and only privately owned airline. It started operation on October 30, 2005.

Incident: Saha Airlines B707 at Ahvaz on Aug 3rd 2009, two engines on fire at liftoff
By Simon Hradecky, created Monday, Aug 3rd 2009 14:52Z, last updated Monday, Aug 3rd 2009 14:59Z

The crew of a Saha Airlines Boeing 707-300, registration EP-SHK performing flight IRZ-124 from Ahvaz to Tehran (Iran) with 174 passengers, declared emergency reporting engines #1 and #2 (left outboard and inboard engines) on fire immediately after liftoff. The airplane left engine parts behind on the departure runway. The crew managed to extinguish the fires and landed safely back to Ahvaz's only runway 10 minutes after liftoff. No injuries occured.

Emergency services discovered fuel leaking from the airplane after landing. The airport had to be closed.

The airline said, that a replacement aircraft has been dispatched to Ahvaz.

5 western planes to join Iranian airlines

A senior Iranian aviation official says Iran will add five new western planes to its airlines within the next 30 days.

Iran plans to introduce 14 new passenger planes to its aviation fleet, acting Iranian Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) chief Mohammad Ali Ilkhani was quoted by Mehr News Agency as saying.

"Five Boeing and Airbus planes will be entered into the fleet within the next month," he said.

Iran has banned its airlines from leasing more Russian-made aircraft or buying such planes second-hand after two fatal accidents in July resulted in the deaths of 184 passengers with 30 more suffering injuries.

US sanctions prevent Iran from updating its 30-year-old American aircraft and makes it difficult to get European spare parts or planes as well.

After being prevented from buying the latest Boeing or Airbus aircraft due to US sanctions, Iran has started a fleet modernization program based on the latest Russian aircraft, with outstanding orders for 35 Tupolev Tu-204 medium-range airliners.

Iranian MP: Iran to buy Sukhoi Superjet

An Iranian lawmaker says that Iran plans to buy the latest Russian airliner, the Sukhoi Superjet 100 (SSJ).

Mohammad Reza Saberi, who sits on the Development Committee of the Majlis (Iran's parliament), told the Iran Students News Agency (ISNA) that the Roads and Transportation Minister Hamid Behbahani had met his Russian counterpart in Moscow recently, where it was decided to buy the SSJ.

The SSJ is Russia's latest medium-haul airliner, designed and built with an eye on the lucrative export market. It has already secured tens of orders domestically in Russia, including from the flag carrier Aeroflot and the Russian lessor Finance Leasing.

Depending on the variant, the SSJ can carry 75 to 95 passengers, and is priced competitively at around $28 million, which is claimed to undercut its main rival the Brazilian Embraer 190 and 195 by 18-22 percent.

It is powered by two Powerjet SaM146 turbofan engines, which is jointly produced by France's Snecma and Russia's NPO Saturn.

Following the 1979 Islamic revolution in Iran, the US imposed unilateral sanctions against the country, which has restricted Iran's ability to renew its fleet of airliners with western aircraft.

Iran is now embarking on a major fleet renewal program by purchasing the latest Russian aircraft, including the 210-seat Tupolev Tu-204SM.

^^I think always Iran does a very nice job to keep these old birds flying and yes crashes happens...like in every country...Iran is doing very well on its maintenance otherwise we didn't had those 707s still flying, Iran's planes are old and we can't get spareparts.
so you can't expect it's all perfect.

U.S. is a retard... they have sanctions on Irans aviation.. this is Iranian ppl life that we are talking about.. if they had sanctions on military aircrafts that would be something understandable but what have Iranian ppl done to deserve this. this is BS and the west insists not mixing politics with anything else :weird::down::righton:

The B707s are not still flying. They are grounded after that incident of the contagious uncontained engine failure on one in Ahwaz. They kept running them until they started having major incidents. There is not such a great problem getting parts for Russian aircraft and Fokkers which they should have been replaced with ages ago. Iran Air and Mahan Air do keep their aircraft in good condition but the others not so much.

^^They can't get parts for fokker since fokker doesn't exist anymore the company was bankrupt in the 90s!....
and they already banned second hand Tupolev aircraft...
the B727s than... they are very old to.
Kish Air was very nice to when I flew with them:)

spare parts of the fokker are still being built and maintained by a division of fokker that didn't go bankrupt. It was taken over by stork nv and the division nowadays is called stork aviation. (www.fokker.com)
I don't know for sure but probably the EU has also restrictions to Iran? Or not?

I told you all about this before. Fokker parts and servicing are freely available to Iranian airlines from Stork as the Kelvinator says. Pity Fokker didnt make a larger plane. But Russian manufacturers do, but only now have they ordered some new ones. Crashes happen in Iran like in every country but about 10% of all crashes in the world happen in Iran now.

EU dont on aviation but due to the embargoes by america which states a certain amount of american aircraft parts cannot be in new aircraft, it stops them from buying from Airbus due to the quantity of american parts in them

that last video is also cute :)

^^No they are producing a brand new one :)

but ifcourse with help from Russia and Ukraine :)

wich is still great because if we build these we don't need airbus and boeing anymore :)

also it will be build by HESA. here is some info about HESA:

Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industrial Company (Persian: شرکت صنایع هواپیماسازی ایران, HESA) was established in 1976 and belongs to the Iran Aviation Industries Organization (IAIO). The company is located at Shahin Shahr, Isfahan. The company has thousands of square meters of available grounds and 250,000 square meters of shops and hangars are allocated to A/C part manufacturing, assembling, laboratories, flight test facilities and shops of preparation for production. The original factory built by Textron, was to produce Bell 214 of different configurations in Iran with a deal that involved several hundred helicopters and technology transfers. Reportedly the contract was so huge that a new Textron division had to be founded to meet Iranian demands and handle the program with Maj-Gen Delk M Oden as president. The work was stopped due to Iranian Revolution and sanctions against Iran.

Accomplishments:

* Manufacturing Iran-140 passenger plane with Ukraine Cooperation.
* Design and manufacturing Ababil drone.[2]
* Manufacturing Shahed-278 helicopter
* Manufacturing propeller with composite materials
* Hovercraft repairs
* Manufacturing parts
* Azarakhsh
* Saeqeh (warplane)
* IAMI Shafaq
* Simorgh: The Simorgh (هواپيماي سيمرغ) is a HESA built two-seat Northrop F-5A to F-5B conversion. It was first flown in Iran airshow 2005, and two have been built.

Iran Aviation Industries Organization

The Iran Aviation Industries Organization (IAIO) was established in 1966 for the purpose of planning, controlling, and managing the military aviation industry of Iran.

The Iran Helicopter Support and Renewal Company (IHSRC), or PANHA, was formed in 1969, the Iranian Aircraft Industries (IACI) in 1970, and Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industries Corporation (IAMI), also known under its Farsi acronym HESA, in 1974. Two other important companies, Iran Aviation Industries Organization of the Armed Forces, also known as the Iranian Armed Forces Aviation Industries Organization (IAFAIO), and GHODS Research Center were formed in the early 1980s.

Currently, the IAIO is responsible for directing five aviation organizations: SAHA, HESA, PANHA, GHODS, Shahid Basir Industry. These five organizations have different and complementary roles in the Iranian defense industry and Iranian civil aviation, and have progressed from repair and maintenance facilities to larger defence enterprises with several thousands employees, except for Ghods which has remained relatively small.

IAIO acts as a policy maker and coordinator to promote an indigenous Iranian aeronautical industry by providing and assisting the Iranian aircraft industries with needed technologies, knowledge and parts.

Major Projects

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has favored the the purchase of aircraft such as Iran-140 which are manufactured in Iran.

Iran’s Aviation Industries Organization plans to manufacture 100 advanced Tupolev Tu-214 and Tu-204 airplanes with a capacity of 210 persons each in cooperation with Russia within the next 10 years. Iran also intends to manufacture at least 50 Ka-32 helicopters in Iran under license of Kamov and negotiations are underway to manufacture 50 An-148 under licence, probably with similar arrangements as Iran-140 to be named Iran-148.Agreements were signed with Russia for co-development and co-manufacture of an uncertain amount of Tu-334 airliners in Iran with production to commence simultaneously both in Iran and Russia. Another agreement with Poltava Helicopter Company of Ukraine allows Iran to manufacture the Aerokopter AK1-3 ultra-light multi-purpose helicopters in Iran. Yet, Iran says it is prepared to order passenger planes from Boeing and Airbus if the United States lifts sanctions against Iran.

Overview

Iran's aviation industry is making rapid strides. As evidenced by the inaugural flight of Iran's indigenously designed and manufactured Azarakhsh and Saeqeh fighter jet to the mass production and launch of helicopters, turboprops, and passenger planes.

By September 2004, Iran Aviation Industry had produced more than 1,600 aircraft, 2,182 aero-engines, 1,751 helicopter engines, 149 industrial jet engines, in addition to repairing more than 11 models of aircraft and 18 models of military, commercial and industrial aircraft engines.
