Shame, shame. And this is only in the very beginnings of Carnival......

Central Lockup draws quite a crowd as Mardi Gras nears

by Katy Reckdahl, The Times-Picayune Saturday February 21, 2009, 9:33 PM

Between 12:01 a.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday, more than 300 people were booked at Orleans Parish Central Lockup, presumably not a place any of them wanted to be. But a glance through their booking photos found many with goofy grins.

Almost all of the people arrested were charged with public drunkenness, often combined with resisting arrest or disturbing the peace.

Allegations of disturbing the peace cited various offenses, such as fighting, threats or "tumultuous manner." One 48-year-old man was booked Saturday at 4 a.m. with disturbing the peace by "refusing to go to sleep or leave for home."

Most allegedly drunken men in their 20s and 30s were also booked with lewd conduct, the typical charge for people caught urinating in public.

One man was booked for spitting on the sidewalk, another for trying to avoid paying a cab fare and a third for not paying for a drink. Two were nailed for parking in handicapped spots and several for "crossing or traversing a police cordon."

Two were brought on suspicion of prostitution, one allegedly charging $20 for her services and the other $100.

Not surprisingly, some pockets and purses allegedly held drugs, usually marijuana but also cocaine, codeine, heroin and prescription pills.

One man was booked with trying to distribute "false drugs."

Judging from the arrests, the traffic division was also industrious, hauling in many drivers without proper licenses or registration and charging at least one motorist under city statute 154-387, which prohibits "driving on curbs."

Parade-goers who hadn't paid Gretna or Kenner tickets also found themselves sitting at Central Lockup, awaiting transfer to other jails.

Some clearly went too far while letting the good times roll. Just after 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, a 50-year-old California woman was booked with "obscene live conduct." Two minutes later, a 44-year-old California man with the same last name was booked on the same charge.

Both scowled in their booking photos.

I agree. Things are getting back to normal...especially when it comes to Carnival. With 1.1 million out of town visitors to New Orleans for this Mardi Gras, I'm surprised that more haven't been arrested thus far....Can't wait to see the final tally Tuesday night. :D

I have never seen so many people in my life. I didn't see a lot of crime, just a lot of very drunk people. One girl was lifting her shirt in a more family area on the parade route through the Warehouse District. She was warned twice by police PA. On the third lift, she was manhandled by a cop, but she was not arrested. She didn't lift her shirt after that. I did help lift two women in even gowns over a chain length fence. Only in New Orleans. If that wasn't the biggest Mardi Gras ever, I really can't see how they can cram more people into that city. The crowds were overwhelming at times, but I had the time of my life. I can't wait until next year.

Yes....It was a big Mardi Gras. On Fat Tuesday, word is that the crowds haven't been that big in 25 to 30 years and businesses, restaurants, and bars across the city are reporting sales 30% higher than last Mardi Gras. I had so much incredible fun this year. My bruises remind me this evening. It was just the best this year. I had fun every single day.

Mardi Gras was huge this year. We were on Orleans Ave. at a friends house for Endymion, and the crowd was filling up the street hours before the parade. The whole day was a blast.

I was also on Orleans Ave for Endymion, and the crowds there were probably 100 people deep on the neutral ground side.

We probably walked right past you. Our friends live a couple of houses down from Olympia on the neutral ground side.

I wish that I wouldn't have missed it, sigh. At least I'll be down there for two weeks next month, and again in June. Yay!

I wish people could quit acting liking drunken morons. It's sad when they have to be baby-sat by police.

I'm 19 dude, and I know something called responsibility. It's pretty simple.

Plenty of these people know responsibility as well, they just chose to follow it all but one or two days a year.

Jebus. I thought I was being lectured by an elderly gent in the Westboro thread (see one above this), but 19?

Sorry, I go out and have drinks with friends, but does that mean I am irresponsible? Or when I choose to live it up a bit and go out and have a night on the town?

Back to the original article... Just 300? I'm surprised. I had a friend that attended, and she said that public restroom facilities were hard to come by. Instead of booking these people, why not provide additional porta-potties? Or were they not expecting so many?

I don't know that a person could be irresponsible at Mardi Gras. Jesus...just drink, eat, catch beads, and have fun. Worry about the rest on Ash Wednesday. I partied with friends, strangers, family, etc. ages 3 to 85 and we never worried about being "responsible." Just "be careful." It's Mardi Gras.

If you continue to follow me around in threads, I'll see that it's stopped. And yes, be totally proud of being arrested for a drunken brawl, indecent exposure, etc. Great job at life.

Oh please, stop me? I have lived in the southeast my entire life up until last year (okay, just above the Ohio River by about 12 blocks), and have commented in a variety of threads in my locales for years. That isn't stalking, that's commenting and replying, and from just two posts that we have both commented upon, that's coincidence. Sorry that my non-religious comments in another thread have stirred up your emotions, but telling me that I'm going to be visiting the devil or whatever because I don't believe in some higher deity does deserve some pause and laughter on my end. Moving on!
