New Crete airport to open in 2014

A new airport in Kastelli, on the large island of Crete, is scheduled to open in 2014, Environment, Town Planning and Public Works Minister George Souflias said during a meeting with local administration officials in Irakleio, Crete on Tuesday.

Tenders will be considered in May and a contractor will undertake the 1.2 billions-euro project by the end of the year. Construction of a new road linking the airport with the north and south road axes on Crete will be included in related infrastructure projects.

The airport, auxiliary facilities and infrastructure will cover an area of 600 hectares, including a 3.8-km-long runway to accommodate large aircraft and meet the island's needs in air transportation.
Roughly 1,000 jobs are expected to be created during the construction phase, while 2,500 people will be employed as airport staff.
Thirty major projects with a total budget of 500 million euros are currently under scheduled for Crete.

15th World Route Development Forum: Airlines honour AIA with first place in Europe - The only European airport with increased number of frequencies in 2009

Athens International Airport (AIA) is once again the winner of the Routes Airport Marketing Awards* in the Europe category. AIA was awarded in the framework of World ROUTES 2009, the biggest gathering of airports and airlines, held in Beijing, from September 12-15. This time airlines from across the globe distinguished AIA for supporting their route development consistently and dynamically, through the airport’s wide-scale innovative marketing programmes**.

During tough economic times, this new distinction has a special significance for Athens International Airport: In 2009, AIA was the only European airport with increased number of frequencies, with its airline marketing programmes having so far brought 12 new airlines to Athens in 2009 (Air Arabia, Baboo, Cimber Sterling, Libyan. Lvov, Transavia, Atlant-Souyz Airlines, Athens Airways, Etihad, Pegasus, Hellenic Imperial and Sun Express) and 8 new international destinations (Nice, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Tripoli, Benghazi, Casablanca, Izmir, Krasnodar).

Within the framework of the 2009 awards, Amsterdam and Brussels airports were highly commended in the Europe category.

* supported by OAG
** By participating in the airlines’ initial business risk in developing a new route through its incentives and marketing programme, Athens International Airport consistently supports airlines for route development and increases the airport’s competitiveness. Additionally, Athens International Airport implements a co-promotion and advertising programme, following pioneer strategies for the development of new routes, contributing to the promotion of airlines in the Greek market.

Olympic Air

" For travellers all around the world, the word "Olympic" brings to mind many memories and dreams. But for all Greeks, it will always bring to mind the first Greek airline. The first airline that opened the world's skies to all Greeks, becoming synonymous with safety and serving as a point of reference and pride for generations and generations - bringing her historic logo of six linked rings to all corners of the world.

On October 1st, the new Olympic enters a new era, spreading its wings and embarking on new voyages. It has been renamed Olympic Air and in the hands of Marfin Investment Group (MIG) (http://www.marfininvestmentgroup.com/), the largest business group in Southeastern Europe, active in the fields of transport, tourism, food, healthcare and IT, with more than 56,000 employees and a client base that exceeds 20 million people in 40 countries, it is ready to once again fly high in the world's skies.

The new Olympic Air will be more modern than ever and have a new vision, a new vigor, a new concept - with brand new cutting-edge aircraft, with innovative and pioneering services, with traditional Greek hospitality, and a renewed passion to offer even more.

In addition to this new momentum, leading technology, innovation, and pioneering, the new Olympic Air will boast one of the youngest fleets of aircraft in Europe, consisting of Airbus A319/A320s and Bombardier Dash 8s. Overall, our investment in the fleet is expected to exceed $1.1 billion.
MIG, as the largest business group in Southeastern Europe, has and will continue to offer its full support to Olympic Air in order to achieve Olympic Air's objectives. MIG's international networks and know-how will support Olympic Air's endeavors globally.

The network of Olympic Air will serve 10 international destinations and 20 domestic, with the intention to serve another 14 domestic locations under the Public Service Obligations (PSO) scheme. Aiming to better serve the travelling public, Olympic is creating business partnerships and code-share agreements with other carriers such as Delta Airlines (*), to serve certain additional international destinations.

(*) The collaboration with Delta Airlines is subject to final approval of the USA Department of Transportation and the Greek Civil Aviation Authority "

Athens "Eleftherios Venizelos"

According to a guy from www.airliners.gr (http://www.airliners.gr) the plans for the satellite terminal are moving ahead. The plans includes increasing capacity and new commercial spaces.
At the moment there is a general trend for the study project which will be completed by mid 2009.
2010 will start the construction of a multi parking.
The project will oversee the architectural firm of Theophanis Bobotis.

The first and only time I used the underground pedestrian way between the main terminal and satellite terminal at Eleftherios Venizelos was upon arrival on a Swiss Intl A320 from ZRH during the 2004 Olympic Games. The pedestrian tunnel seemed very nice and spacious. I seem to recall that it did not have the option of a moving walkway. And that the length was close to 500m. Perhaps this is why upon disembarking from the aircraft we were given the option of boarding a shuttle bus for the main terminal.

Yet on my departure 10 days later we boarded a shuttle bus at the main terminal lower departure gates and were shuttled to the Satellite Terminal to and took the staircase up to the gate area before boarding the Swiss Intl A320 through the JetWay (boarding bridge).

My questions are as follows:

1) Were major airlines somehow opposed to their passengers having to walk the distance of the pedestrian "Link" tunnel to the Satellite Terminal?

2) Are any new boarding gates (with JetWays) going to be installed in the Main Terminal - Satellite Terminal bridge?

3) Or is the sole purpose of the above ground Main Terminal - Satellite Terminal bridge to add retail space (shops, restaurants, etc) to get travelers to part with more Euros.
