i saw this and thought the same, but the concrete around the windows...what looks like concrete anyway does not seem to suggest the window pattern in the render but im not in construction.

I think on the render the black is painted concrete and the lighter grey are the actual window openings which seems to fit with the construction so far. Not as good a design as I was expecting looks a bit cheap.

I don't like that grey and yellow elevation. Looks like something from a ferry port. The watering down of design continues...

It's very Will Alsop... I like it, adds a splash of colour to the area and hides the dull block behind it.

I agree. As long as the grey parts don't look like generic industrial unit corrugated shite.

This unit is not made of concrete, the only concrete used was for the construction of the floor slab. The unit consists of a cladded envolope, of which the majority is silver in colour, all trims are a lime green/yellow which works in contrast to the black cladding between the windows.

Crikey, that's a hell of a secret to share!

Thanks for the info and hey people1 :hi:

I did get a tad confused as to the link between what I was seeing built and the render of the finished product. I'm looking forward to this lime green/yellow trim. I hope it looks quality like the burns unit on the back.

Had a glimpse of it yesterday, I'm not impressed, but I don't think it looks as bad as the renders.

This is almost finished - the wrap around aperture is a striking green and is pretty nice. It reminds me of a much smaller version of the Skyrail terminal at International Station.

i_like_concrete
October 29th, 2009, 11:27 AM
I don't think it needs to age well, it has a very temporary look to it, be it intended or not, they are not building this to have a long lasting legacy.

Not too sure what bits of the building are the front or the side, that everyone refers to but I like the smaller side with the green surround. The longer side does look a bit iffy - the green doesn't really work with that corrugated metal look. In fact, the corrugated metal look just doesn't work.

What a condescending name, it's like calling a group, 'spastic society.' I bet the name was thought-up by a bloody expensive steering group of ******* professionals.

It really annoys me, seeing this knowing the effect it will have on some of my teenage patients.

I realise its off-topic, but how many of you realise ‘At least one in three of us will have cancer at some point in our lives.’

Erebus555
March 23rd, 2010, 02:26 AM
I don't really see the issue with the name, in all honesty... It is exactly what it says on the tin. I much prefer it to the ones named "Hope" and "Opportunity"... Way too cliched...

TCT ward at Birmingham Children’s Hospital wins design award
Published: 29-Nov-2010

The Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) Ward at Birmingham Children’s Hospital in UK, designed by Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, has scooped the 2010 Building Better Healthcare (BBH) Award for Best Interior Design.

The new TCT facility has been designed by UK-based architectural practice Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands to cater to specific needs of its patients, with bright decor and areas. The judges praised the building’s sensitivity and response to brief.

The TCT has been designed to provide a six-bed extension to the existing oncology ward at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital in the form of a striking linear pod. An inviting environment with a non-clinical atmosphere has been created in an attempt to encourage friends and family to visit or stay overnight in one of the guest beds integrated into the bespoke bedroom furniture. A large ‘activity zone’ is featured at the heart of the ward, while a bespoke ‘inhabitable wall’ activates the entrance corridor with spaces for reflection, work and play.
