The Oliver Kahn picture and the one above it are courtesy of Arindam in Picasaweb.

^^Most likely Moved but I would request the mods to keep it here, because the guy requesting the info seems new to SSC.
Actually SAlt Lake is second to Rungrado May Day Stadium in Pyongyan, North Korea

it is very sad for us that the second largest stadium of the world is not at all famous even in its home country. once, this stadium delivered some historical games when "chuni(might have spelled wrong) goswami" was the captain of "mohun bagan" football team.

^^ Whenever I see this stadium, I remember the movie Gladiator. Such an amazing structure. Hope one day they will modernize the stadium keeping its original size and shape.

I also hope the Salt Lake Stadium will be modernised by installing individual seating in the spectator areas, increasing the floorspace of the stadium, and add an exterior facade.

Yes they are going to modernize it starting this summer or next summer, can't remember which. Modernizing includes putting in actual seats, refurbishing the roof, adding a new worldclass pitch to the ground and even making the stadium be used just for football, in which case the pitch will be extended on to the track and field space. This will make the playing space be the biggest and most standard of all for football in India. Currently the pitch is not wide compared to European and International standards.

Isn't there actual seating already installed on the west side of the stadium? And how is the pitch not large enough for soccer?

The pitch of the Saltlake Stadium happens to be 105 x 68 metres (the standard size for the pitches of several football stadiums. I don't think it can be extended onto the track. And if they modernise the Saltlake Stadium, I hope the Eden Gardens gets a renovation and modernisation as well (similar to the Melbourne Cricket Ground).
