View Full Version : Chittagong - Cityscapes and Landmarks - Part 2
tanzirian March 5th, 2009, 04:31 AM The old Chittagong Cityscapes and Landmarks thread has reached 500 posts so I thought it as good an excuse as any to start a new one.* Will begin with some of the nicer photos in old thread.* A few of the more significant buildings to start with (1st pic - Sobuj Chowdhury, 2nd pic - photographer unknown; 3rd pic - Jashim Salem; 4th pic - B M Magid; 5th pic - Faisal Akram; 6th pic Azimal Baber; 7th pic - photographer unknown).

Thanks Tareq - credit to the photographers (including our own Mirza and Dhakaiya) and to Tmac's scavenging of course. I'll sort and add a few more later...it's incredible the amount of time it takes to go through all those old photos!

Chittagong is supposed to be hilly yet no hills in sight in any of the pictures.
There are low hills around...look at backgrounds of first and third pics of post 8 you can see that it is not flat. And Foy's Lake which is essentially within the city itself nowadays is bordered by low hills. Now, there were never very high hills within the city itself...highest in the area is Batali Hill which is 280 ft tall. Also, many hills have been flattened or shortened in the last few decades as the earth was used in construction.

nayeem007 July 2nd, 2009, 11:54 PM Great pics.. I have never been to Chittagong city Can someone compare and contrast Chittagong in relation to Dhaka? Outside of the usual skyscraper stuff, are there many good restaurants, malls, private universities etc? Is the boom over there in the same scale as Dhaka since late 90s?
Manazir July 3rd, 2009, 12:19 AM ^^ malls, AFAIK, Sanmar Ocean City is the best, picture is up there. There are few good restaurants (theres Pizza Hut and a place called Best food or sumthin), the boom in Chittagong city is bit slower than Dhaka i would say, the city needs more developments especially infrastructural developments :).....the traffic jams are crazy like Dhaka.

Dhaka got a major facelift before the SAARC summit, now if you visit Chittagong you can clearly notice the difference between Dhaka roads and Chittagong. Dhaka is more "international", but Chittagong IMO is more beautiful thanks to its amazing natural surroundings and hilly areas.

Is that the CGP railway station? I would've never guessed. Looks like an old court building to me.
tanzirian July 6th, 2009, 02:11 PM Is that the CGP railway station? I would've never guessed. Looks like an old court building to me.
Yes, it's the station, the Court House is bigger and looks a little different...see the pics on page 1 of this thread.
I came across the pics of Ambrosia restaurant earlier but was wondering if it was really in Chittagong or not, although labeled "Chittagon" (minus one "g") by the photographer. If it's really CTG, very nice by BD standards. I wonder which building it is in?

Not sure, it was renovated a few years ago, by Grameen I believe. I used to simply refer to it as the rail station, but Nayeem says that there is a new one now, so maybe he knows what this one is used for today?

jjsheed August 6th, 2009, 01:06 AM If there is one thing Chittagong needs, its more shopping centers. That was the number one complaint I received from relatives. There have been quite a few open in recent times like Sanmar Ocean City, but unfortunately that was the only one with modern features. However, I was impressed with many individual stores that have popped up in various parts of the city.
Referring to Ambrosia, I was really impressed with the atmosphere. I went to see a concert with my cousins, and the restaurant gave off a House of Blues mixed with a high end diner vibe. The food was pretty good, it was a buffet ranging from various Bengali and Indian foods to some New Orleans cuisine and BBQ.
Manazir August 6th, 2009, 09:06 AM ^^
Chittagong really needs some more shopping malls, restaurants, cafes, fastfood chains, brand stores etc aswell as infrastructural developments.

Perhaps the operative word here is predicted? Because Chittagong, today, is nothing like Dhaka, nowhere near Dhaka.

Well, its easier to have higher percentage growth at smaller populations.
Nice video BTW. Not sure about Chittagong in 20 BC...the general area may have been habited but not sure of its importance.

Yes, that is true. But I didn't see Sylhet or any other smaller cities of Bangladesh in the top 100 let alone top ten. But regardless, it's good to see one city outside of Dhaka growing fast, that should take some load off the capital.

I sincerely hope (and pray) the the development(s) in Chittagong shall be done in a deliberate and meticulously planned manner, unlike the haphazard manner in Dhaka. It would be a real pity if people destroy the natural beauty and thereby the ecology of Chittagong, in the name of development.

Latin America(Brazil, Argentina, Chile) and certain parts of Africa like (South Africa, Morocco, Egypt) is actually much more developed than South Asia.

sidkings November 12th, 2009, 07:44 PM Does anyone know how old these statisics are? Its says from 2006, but I am 100% convinced I have seen this data before somewhere on another website maybe. Im talking from about 1999/2000!! The reason it stuck in my mind was because of Chittagong @ 10 and all these other cities Ive not heard of before.
Do you think this list has been reused? Is it possible that to find another list of cites that are ranked in the same order? Im sure Chittagong does not come into the top 10 in most fastest growing city lists (Although it should do)
nayeem007 November 12th, 2009, 10:45 PM KFC outlet in Chittagong
Staff Correspondent, CtgKFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken), a concern of Transcom Foods Limited, started journey in the port city through launching its first outlet here yesterday.
Transcom Foods Executive Director Akku Chowdhury inaugurated the outlet at Ameen Centre of Lalkhan Bazar Ispahani Intersection through cutting cake in the afternoon.
"We take pride in making debut in Chittagong, enriched with history of revolution and liberation war," said Chowdhury.
Fanfare and festivity marked the inaugural ceremony.
"Responding to the demand of our valued customers we will introduce some new items to the existing 11 secret spices recipes while ensuring further first-rated services and overall outstanding dining experience,” he said.
The company boss hoped that the international chain's new outlet would add an extra appeal to the customers.
"We have a plan to open a outlet in the beach city of Cox's Bazar soon," he said.
Both KFC and Pizza Hut are subsidiaries of the world's largest International restaurant company Yum. Pizza Hut has also been successfully serving in
Chittagong since 2005.

Someone should alert the powers that be in McDonald's about these two goldmines.

Interestingly, McDonald's has been there for a long time in India and understandably has significant presence. KFC outlets aren't that apparent in India. In fact, when I visited Bombay for the first time around the summer of 2006 my friends told me they had only one outlet in this area called Bandra. I was there again last month and was informed that they still have that one outlet.
From what I've heard KFC plans to have around 20 outlets across Bangladesh over the course of the next five years. However, Pizza Hut won't have more than 5-6, as KFC clearly requires more volume and thus has a greater addressable market. They can easily have outlets in Maghbazar, Uttara, Mirpur and Motijheel and definitely in Sylhet.

Beautification of the port city of Chittagong is going on prior to ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. PHOTO: ANURUP KANTI DAS
Prabir Barua ChowdhuryThe port city is being refurbished to welcome Cricket World Cup 2011. Like other cricket loving places of the world, the city is waiting for the cricket extravaganza.
Through the Cricket World Cup, Bangladesh is introducing herself to the world as an organiser at an international level. As a host of two matches, the government and other related organisations took preparations to refurbish the city as a game village.
Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) and Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) are doing the beautification and facelift works. CCC is implementing the project worth Tk 86 crore. Of the amount, it will provide Tk 17 crore from its own fund.
Under this project, CCC is making three artificial fountains, three icons of Royal Bengal Tiger, steel-statue of Bangladesh team players and many billboards to welcome the players and guests.
The fountains are being set up at GEC, Wasa and Tigerpass intersections and the icons of Royal Bengal Tiger in front of Premier University Wasa campus and two others in the foothill of Tigerpass road.
Besides, CCC will erect a statue of Bangladesh team players in front of custom office, a model of five Sampans to be hanged with gas balloons at the estuary of Karnaphuli just at entrance of Shah Amanat International Airport. Another model of sampans will be set up at Jamal Khan intersection.
To uphold the culture and heritage of Bangladesh, CCC also has planned to set up a mural at Tigerpass intersection.
The city corporation will also decorate the roadsides of the port city. Under this project, the road from Sagorika, to GEC intersection will be colourfully painted. It requested residents and private and public offices to paint their houses and boundary walls.
But, most of the building owners did not paint their houses till January 31. CCC Deputy Secretary Md Shamsuddhoa told The Daily Star that they deployed many teams to advance the programme. He, in this regard, said mayor visited different government offices to request them for painting.
He hoped that they would be able to finish the work before the tournament begins.
He said the roads to be used by the players and ICC officials at time of world cup will be recarpeted. Of these roads, carpeting of Jakir Hossain Road is complete and carpeting of Agrabad Excess Road, Port Connecting Road and Nimtoli area in front of customs house are going on.
Most of the roads and dividers will be replenished with paints. They will repair the old dividers in some places and the dividers will have gardens.
The city corporation has set up automatic traffic signalling system costing Tk 1 crore to bring a radical change in traffic system.
To uphold the event, CCC will hoist 1,500 national flags of 14 participating countries in the main city streets and the roads will be decorated with festoons.
To clean the city, CCC collected nine dump trucks from abroad and would engage around 400 temporary workers in this regard. Chief (acting) Sewerage Officer Shafiqual Islam told the Daily Star that they are ready to keep the city neat and clean.
Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) oversees the Sagarika road renovation work of Tk 7.39 crore. The road is the main entrance to Jahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.
About the present condition of the road, Project Director Mahfuzur Rahman said construction of the road will be complete within February 5.
Though CDA hoped to complete the road within February 15, sources said it will be difficult to complete the beautification in a month.
Mahfuzur said they hope to complete the works by the first week of March.

Towhid vi, I was going through the old posts and saw your question. Didn't see any answering you.
Yes, it is run by the Brothers of the Holy Cross. I used to go there myself. The people of chittagong have very high respect for this school, as they stress on rules and regulations along with studies. Even until today, ex-students get preference while job seeking. Couple of months ago, one of my friends applied for a post in a private bank in Dhaka. Fortunate for him that the recruiter knew a bit about St. Placid's. He didn't have to go through the initial phases of the interview and eventually got the job.

Chittagong has a lot of projects under development now...many of which are high rises. The only prob is we don't have anyone who can cover Chittagong and give us updates.I am sure many of us will be surprised to see chittaogng if we visit it in a couple of years time.My last visit was years ago!

I suggested that he make clones of himself and post them in all major Bangladeshi cities. As far as I recall, Bangladesh has no laws against human cloning.
True though, nobody in Chittagong is snapping images of buildings. And not just of the modern constructions...the Old Courhouse, a grand colonial structure, has been (at least partially) renovated as of a few years ago, but I can still hardly find any pics on the net taken after that time. Instead, people take pics like the one below, a recent (and pretty) pic of Foy's Lake:
