Harbin (help·info) (simplified Chinese: 哈尔滨) is a sub-provincial city and the capital of the Heilongjiang Province in Northeast China. It lies on the southern bank of the Songhua River. Harbin is ranked as the tenth largest city in China, serving as a key political, economic, scientific, cultural and communications center of Northeastern China.

Harbin is originally a Manchu word meaning "a place for drying fishing nets". Harbin bears the nicknames "The Pearl on the swan's neck" because the shape of Heilongjiang resembles a swan, and "Oriental Moscow" or "Oriental Paris" for the architecture in the city. Harbin is also known as "Ice City" for its long and cold winter. This city is most famous for its beautiful display of ice sculptures in the winter.

Chinese cities really need to start employing some qualified architects and town planners before it is too late. This 'tower block and a bit of grass' idea all served by wide boulevards is not going to leave them with better cities. I hope they realise that before they clear away all of what is there already.

I agree with Britannia. The grass is just bleh. They need to buildings close and then a big park like Central Park in NYC. Would look a lot less cluttered.

Most of the new CBD in China are designed by world renown architects like SOM and Foster...etc.

Maybe you guys are behind with "new" thoughts in urban planning. Central park type of design is too old. Building dense skyscrapers block light, make conjestion, and trap air pollutant which is not good for health.

China is going to lead the trend in urban design in the future while the rest of the world is stuck with old legacy.

amazing! i can appreciate the work in the model, as im the Sydney city council model maker. Ive assisted in building our city model which took 11 years. Its a bigger scale than this one and updated daily if needed! The models are coloured life like due to the model being a planning tool. They are colour coded.

Yes, a lot of the new city concept designing is being done by American, European and Australian architects, but I gather that that is only the starting point. Once the winning design is chosen the local authorities and bureaucrats start fiddling and fighting their own territorial and ego battles. These are often politely described as giving the designs greater local relevance but what it usually means is trivialising and cutting the guts out of the designs. The result is almost invariably much less than the original concept.
Though this is not confined to China: look what the bureaucrats (who know better?! not!!) did to Burley Griffin's design for Canberra or Le Corbusier's concept for Chandigarh or Costa and Niemeyer's grand plan for Brasilia?

wow, harbin looks like one great place to live in. the buildings are awesome, the parks are awesome, and its ice festival is just dazzeling. i like its russian feel, and it's such a unique city to have a trolley.

I love Harbin. I was there for two days during winter during my trip to ??. The Ice and Snow Sculpture Festivals was definitely worth the trip even though I froze my butt off haha.

I am interested in the city of Harbin, and I haven't found pictures of it here
(forgive me if such pics had been posted before). Does anyone by any chance
have any pictures of it? Has it also undergone such massive modernization?
An interesting fact is that Israel's Prime Minister had some ancestors in Harbin
at the time that there was a Jewish community there.

My sister was in China several times. I mean, I was as well, but I visited Shanghai, Guandong, Ningbo... mostly checking an industry...
But , she was once for a whole year, no wander , she is professor of Chenese language in one of Belgrade High School.
So, she have told me about , as she translated , like, Province of Blazing Dragon, or something, and mentioned Harbin as a great Russian like city where ice rules for half a year.

After rewieving these pics, must say , this is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Next time in China, Harbin, here I come!

Cool! Another year of ice and snow event in Harbin. I've planned to go there every year but never made the trip :(

I'd LOVE to visit that place one day! :D

PS: At what temps do Harbiners begin wearing shirt-sleeves or shirts? Just asking because I know the city is notorious in China for extremely cold winter weather - with temps regularly lower than the likes of Moscow, Vladivostok, St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Montreal or Minneapolis-St. Paul! Thanks! :)
