View Full Version : Culver City
festiboi March 8th, 2009, 04:47 AM I've never appreciated the city I live in; Culver City. With today's perfect weather I couldn't resist going out and taking a few snaps of the city. What I really love about it is the small town feel, while being surrounded by the best of LA and the Westside. The downtown area is small, but has a lot of good restaurants and funky shops. Hope you can stop by sometime soon!

Fern~Fern* March 8th, 2009, 05:37 AM When I was living in Westchester I use to go to CC a lot. I really would not mind living there at all. Yet so close to the hustle and bustle of the WS and Downtown but yet so far. You can't go wrong living there at all...
BTW, Great pix guy!!!
Westsidelife March 8th, 2009, 08:47 AM Thanks a lot for this, festiboi. I'm not too familiar with Culver City, so it's nice to get a good look at what it's like and all about.
milquetoast March 8th, 2009, 10:16 AM It still has that near-the-ocean look and feel about it.
Westsidelife March 8th, 2009, 10:49 AM ^ It does? Huh.
festiboi March 8th, 2009, 11:51 AM I don't know why, but until I moved there, I always thought that CC was ghetto and rough. I keep hearing stories that it was once upon a time, anybody know??
AlexTheMartian March 8th, 2009, 01:08 PM the pics you say is your street looks to be around the Fox Hills area, like Green Valley Circle? I used to live in one of the apartment complexes on Centinela just down the road from there, closer to La Tijera. I see the office buildings in the Fox Hills area and think it looks like a great place to have a business headquarters. I see that Symantec company put up their new building at the east end of the 90 freeway since I lived there.
Get Smart March 8th, 2009, 01:26 PM i been to culver city more than ten years ago, my cousin and his American wife lived in Venice BLVD next to the Venice High school where the movie Grease was filmed. We went to Tito's Burrito underneath the 405 freeway and that place i believe was in culver city. Then there is the fox hill mall and the Ikea next to it. However Culver city is far away from the ocean, for that you need to go to venice beach or marina del rey, where they have a nice boat horbour and those luxery cylindrical appartments

^ I believe you are confusing Culver City w/ Inglewood instead.

Well, judging by your pictures, you haven't seen all of Culver City. My family grew up around Inglewood st/blvd and Culver. This are is predominantly Latino, so that my be why you hear that CC is "ghetto" [dumb reason]. It is a little more rough then the downtown area because Mar Vista Gardens [aka the projects] is right there on Inglewood/Braddock. I love this area. Good mexican food [El Abajeno is my favorite Mexican restaurant...been going for about 15 years], people always walking around. Nice bikepath.
Plus, it's only like a 20 minute bus ride to the beach down Washington.
milquetoast March 9th, 2009, 10:56 AM It still has that near-the-ocean look and feel about it.

Yes it does, Pasadena fancypants. Some of those pictures remind me of a roughed up Santa Monica, some remind me of Westchester, some even remind me of PV! And facing west, you get the look of the ocean low in the sky. When I look west I see mountains.
DinoVabec March 9th, 2009, 11:27 AM Awesome pics, man...The place looks great...
klamedia March 9th, 2009, 05:26 PM First time visiting LA I was dragged to Culver City....this was what I thought LA looked like....I vowed never 2 return to such a boring and suburban looking/feeling city. After being coaxed back the West coast I later found out that LA was quite different from humdrum CC and I discovered much more interesting areas east of La Brea. Although I've got to admit that some of those pics, especially the Weeping Willow/Sycamore/Jacaranda? lined street is simply stunning to look at but not really my thing.
I still have no affinity for CC except for the exciting prospect that Expo will arrive in +/-2 years from now, I'm sure I will visit the city once the train is put in. Do you have any pics of prep for the Expo Line?
LAsam March 9th, 2009, 08:47 PM It seems I am in CC almost every weekend... whether it be to stop off at Target, hit up the Julian Dixon County Library, grab some tacos from Tito's, or catch a $5 movie at the Culver Plaza. CC and Santa Monica are like my homes away from home. I personally find a lot to like about CC, and wouldn't be upset to find myself living there at some point in the future.
Get Smart March 9th, 2009, 09:07 PM ^^ i really liked tito's burritto, it was different from Taco Bells which was nice also, pity here in UK we dont have taco bell. I remember the intersection of washington blvd and lincoln blvd, there was a blockbuster in one corner, and opposite that my cousin bought a used car from, a 300zx turbo

Well done and what a good eye! It sure is Fox Hills, Canterbury Dr. to be exact. I really haven't understood all the British names in the neighbourhood (i.e. Canterbury, Windsor, Bristol, Buckingham, etc.), but it's charming. I really like the area and it's so central to everything.
There seems to be a lot of corporate headquarters around here. My company's North American headquarters are at Howard Hughes, which is great because it's close to LAX, but also close enough to Hollywood for promotional events. Makes total sense to set up shop in the area for lots of companies
Aaron W March 10th, 2009, 06:50 AM So how close will the Expo line run to the area of Culver City captured in these photographs with the outdoor eateries & shops? Culver City looks pleasant... I can only imagine how it will further develop over the coming years provided the Expo line actually goes through the heart of the city rather than some outer periphery area.
Westsidelife March 10th, 2009, 10:04 PM ^ It'll stop about two blocks away from the heart of Culver City. There are two enormous strip malls along the way, but they could be rezoned for TODs and therefore make the walk more pleasant and seem not as long.

Inglewood Bl/Culver, Inglewood/Braddock, and Mar Vista Gardens are actually in the city of Los Angeles not Culver City. Pretty much the only portion of Culver City that goes west of the 405 is a thin strip of land along Washington Bl down to close Lincoln Bl. The boundaries are so odd in that area most people would think they live in Culver City.
pesto July 16th, 2009, 11:16 PM CC was never ghetto but it was rougher than most of the Westside in the 60's and 70's when urban flight was occurring. DT was badly decayed and the other streets became anonymous. But the connection to the movie industry provided a nice base for rebuilding and the general unaffordability of the westside pushed demand south from Westwood, Palms and Mar Vista and east from SM and Venice.
I would expect the general move toward urban and the increasing time and cost of commuting would work in its favor for many years to come. But I also imagine that some of those leafy neighborhoods will be under pressure to go condo.

See I visited Culver City recently and where the first phase of Expo ends is pretty accessible and walkable from the train into downtown. Culver City has changed in the past few years and drastically since when I first visited but it's still not quite there especially west of Overland along Washington, still low slung non-mixed use, parking out front buildings. Does Culver City have a proper city hall?
kidA July 19th, 2009, 05:54 AM Yeah it's near the Starbucks.
klamedia July 19th, 2009, 06:14 AM Oh, that part of Culver City makes me wanna get a lobotomy so I never knew that I'd seent it.
Urban Legend March 8th, 2010, 04:24 PM looks like a nice city.
Get Smart March 8th, 2010, 10:59 PM i quite liked Culver City when i visited it
