rizalhakim March 11th, 2009, 05:44 AM Malacca gets nod for RM65m runway extension
By Vasantha GanesanPublished: 2009/03/11
THE Malacca state government has received the green light from the federal government to extend the runway at Batu Berendam Airport, which is slated for completion in six months.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam said that the extension at the airport, which will be renamed Malacca International Airport, will cost RM65 million.
The extension is to accommodate larger carriers like Boeing B737 and Airbus A320, in line with its goal of making the historical state a top tourist destination.
"The runway will be extended to 2,200m from 1,800m now. It will cost RM65 million and the state will take a loan from the federal government for this," Mohd Ali said.
This is in addition to the RM135 million grant given to renovate and refurbish the airport, which is operated by Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd.
Mohd Ali said budget carrier AirAsia has indicated that it will fly to three destinations in Sumatra, Indonesia, namely Pekan Baru, Bukit Tinggi and Medan, from Malacca, once the runway is ready.
"After that, AirAsia plans to fly to Penang and Langkawi and a year after that to Jakarta, Palembang, Balik Papan and Kuching (from Malacca)," he said after witnessing an agreement-signing ceremony between Casa del Rio (M) Sdn Bhd and Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd, and Sin Seong Hin Sdn Bhd.
"Firefly will also be coming in. We now only have Riau Airlines (operating at the airport)," he said, adding that he hopes other charter flights will also operate out of Malacca International Airport.
Mohd Ali said the state recorded a total of 7.2 million tourists last year, of which 6 million were domestic tourists. In the first two months of this year, Malacca has already welcomed 600,000 visitors.
He added that some 70,000 foreign patients sought medical treatment at the state.
"This is only 0.1 per cent of the 7 million rich people who are staying in Sumatra. We need to focus more on Sumatra ... with the new Malacca International Airport, we hope more patients will come here," he said.
rizalhakim March 11th, 2009, 05:52 AM Malacca airport to draw more regional tourists
KUALA LUMPUR: The completion of the Malacca airport runway extension project in the next six months will help attract more Indonesians into the state’s healthcare tourism sector, said Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.
“Our main target is healthcare tourists; that is why we have the federal government approval on the extension.
“The health tourism business is very encouraging and it will bring a lot of income to Malacca and our country,” he told reporters after a signing ceremony between Casa del Rio (M) Sdn Bhd and Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd for a RM50mil term loan facility to build a boutique hotel and serviced apartments in Malacca.
Mohd Ali said the healthcare treatment cost in Malacca was half that of Jakarta and by just capturing 1% of Sumatra’s population of seven million people, a huge benefit would be gained. Last year, Malacca attracted about 70,000 tourists from Sumatra.

Once the runway extension project is completed, AirAsia Bhd will fly to three places in Sumatra - Pekan Baru, Bukit Tinggi and Medan - and domestically to Penang and Pulau Langkawi, the chief minister said, adding that the budget airline would later add Jakarta, Balikpapan, Kuching, Sandakan and Kota Kinabalu to its list.
Ali Rustam said the expanded airport would be named Malacca International Airport, with FlyFirefly Sdn Bhd expected to operate from there at a later stage.
Currently, only Lion Air from Indonesia operates at the airport.
Meanwhile, the RM102mil boutique hotel project by Casa del Rio is scheduled for completion by the end of next year.
Mohd Ali said with the hotel and four others under construction, the number of hotel rooms in Malacca would increase by about 1,500 rooms in three years, adding to the 10,000 rooms now.
rizalhakim March 11th, 2009, 07:17 AM Landasan terbang siap September
KUALA LUMPUR 10 Mac - Kerja memanjangkan landasan di Lapangan Terbang Melaka di Batu Berendam dijangka siap sepenuhnya dalam tempoh enam bulan lagi.
Ketua Menteri Melaka, Datuk Seri Mohd.

achkeen10 April 1st, 2009, 03:58 AM Dijangka Menjana Pendapatan RM1 Bilion Setahun
LTAM BEROPERASI SEPENUHNYA 1 NOVEMBER

rizalhakim April 2nd, 2009, 09:15 AM AirAsia To Operate Flights From Batu Berendam Airport
MELAKA, March 31 (Bernama) -- Budget airline, AirAsia, will be asked to use aviation facilities at the newly-upgraded Batu Berendam Airport from May 1, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said today.
Mohd Ali said he will meet AirAsia chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes soon on the matter.
The airport, given a RM131.5 million facelift, can be used from mid-April.
It can accommodate Boeing 737 aircraft and Airbus at half-load, he told reporters after inspecting work progress at the airport.
Upgrading work by Konsortium Uni-Integrated started in April 2007 to facilitate health tourist arrivals, particularly from Sumatra, who number close to 60,000 a year.
The airport will have a 7,000 square metre new terminal and will be equipped with facilities to receive domestic and international flights.
Mohd Ali said facilities for full load landing by Boeing and Airbus are expected to be ready in October, with the runway extended by 400 metres to 2,200 metres from 1,800 metres.
Fernandes, after a meeting with Mohd Ali in August last year, had said for a start AirAsia had identified six destinations -- four in Sumatra and two domestic -- from the airport.
Boeing aircraft will be used to land and take off for Palembang, Pekan Baru, Padang and Medan in Sumatra, Penang and Langkawi.
Fernandes however told the state government AirAsia's passenger and cargo planes will use the Batu Berendam Airport only at full load capacity.
Mohd Ali said the airport can handle 1.5 million tourists and rake in RM1 billion revenue when it is fully operational.
The Batu Berendam Airport, the country's first health tourism airport, has plans to handle flights from Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and Hong Kong, he added.

MELAKA 1 April - Kerajaan negeri menyasarkan kedatangan 1.5 juta pelancong menerusi Lapangan Terbang Antarabangsa Melaka (LTAM) yang dijangka siap sepenuhnya November ini.
Ketua Menteri, Datuk Seri Mohd.
rizalhakim April 2nd, 2009, 09:54 AM LTBB dibuka pesawat besar hujung tahun

I just feel that the English words on the signage is too small to serve the purposes of informing. Not only this happens at MIA, but also else in the country. Why can't the English or in some instances, chinese and other languages' wordings be the same size as Malay words? They can just put the English words in Italic form to differentiate the two. Remember the purpose of a traffic signage is to inform the public from a good and safe driving distance away so that they can have enough time to react. If the words are too small, might as well don't include them.

By CHEN PELF YEEN
MALACCA: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam was left fuming when he realised that a whole lot of problems needed fixing despite the official opening of a new terminal at the Malacca International Airport.
First, he was informed that the extended 1,800m runway under the RM131.5mil project could not be fully utilised because several obstructing trees had yet to be removed.
Later, he took to task airport officials for failing to provide a wheelchair for an elderly passenger who could hardly walk.
He said the airport must have sufficient wheelchairs for passengers as the airport was designated as an entry point for health tourism in the state.
http://thestar.com.my/archives/2009/5/6/nation/n_pg02riau.jpg
Comfort ride: Mohd Ali pushing the wheelchair of a passenger from Riau to the Immigration check-in counter at the Malacca International Airport yesterday.
“There seems to be coordination problems between the contractors and state officers monitoring the progress.
“I will chair a meeting tomorrow (today) with all the relevant officers,” he told reporters after a ceremony to welcome the passengers of Riau Airlines yesterday.
The ceremony saw Malaysia Airports Berhad beginning operations at the new terminal to handle its first flight – a Riau Airlines Fokker 50 from Pekan Baru at 9.30am.
The project to build a new terminal and to extend the former 1,362m runway to 1,800m was launched in April 2007.
However, at present only 1,476m of the runway is being used owing to various obstructions, including the trees.
Mohd Ali said the 1,800m runway would be fully operational by Sept 1 and thereafter, would see Firefly’s inaugural flight to Singapore with their Fokker ATR72 airplane.
“The longer runway will allow for Boeing A737 and Airbus 320 to land,” he said.
Mohd Ali said some 1.5 million tourists were expected to enter Malacca via the airport within three years.
rizalhakim May 6th, 2009, 07:42 AM Upgraded Malacca airport to boost health tourism
By : Jason Gerald John
MALACCA: The newly upgraded airport at Batu Berendam is expected to receive 500,000 passengers within the next three years.
This figure is not far-fetched as the airport, which will be renamed Malacca International Airport by year end after a RM131.5 million upgrade, is targeted to boost the state as a hub for health tourism.
In citing an example, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said even with the old airport, the health tourism sector in the state had seen a steady increase in medical tourists, especially those from Singapore and Indonesia.
"Take the state-owned Putra Hospital for example. It recorded revenue of RM100 million from medical tourism packages last year compared with RM70 million in the previous year.
"This is why I foresee the airport playing a significant role in bringing in the medical tourists, especially from Sumatra, which has about 70 million people," Ali said after the soft launch of the new Batu Berendam airport terminal here yesterday.
Earlier, Ali, accompanied by Malaysia Airports Berhad managing director Datuk Seri Bashir Ahmad Abdul Majid, received 26 tourists from Indonesia who arrived at the new terminal via Riau Airlines.
On the operations of the airport, Ali said Riau Airlines would fly to Batu Berendam once daily while Firefly, the low-cost carrier of Malaysia Airlines, would resume its operations from here to Singapore in September.
"AirAsia will only operate from here in November when the full length of the runway, which measures 2,135 metres, is completed."
Ali added that there had been a request from AirAsia to privatise the Batu Berendam Airport similar to the Senai International Airport in Johor.
"AirAsia proposed to take over the operations of this airport and we have no problem with that.
"However, any decision on this will have to be made by the Federal Government."

AEROBRIDGE PELENGKAP PENUMPANG LTBB
daeng_jal May 11th, 2009, 03:18 PM LTBB Mampu Capai Sasaran 1.5 Juta Penumpang Setahun
rizalhakim May 20th, 2009, 04:47 AM Trees hamper Malacca International Airport
By ALLISON LAI
MALACCA: The state will acquire 2.48ha at the edge of the newly-extended Malacca International Airport in Batu Berendam to clear trees seen to hamper the airport’s operations.
This was among several defects discussed by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam at a meeting here to iron out teething problems before the RM131mil airport is fully utilised in November.
“I was under the impression that the problems had to do with the runway’s gradient and airplane capabilities.
“But Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) officials informed me that the oil palm trees were a problem,” he told reporters after visiting the Serkam Halal Hub in Jasin recently.
He said the DCA had also informed him that part of Tesco Hypermart’s warehouse in the state’s heavy vehicle terminal nearby exceeded the height limit.
“A committee headed by the state secretary has been formed and to resolve the issues,” he said, adding that the DCA would now sit in the city’s One Stop Centre.
Mohd Ali lashed out at state and airport officials, including contractors, for poor coordination of the airport project resulting in the teething problems.
The project to build a new terminal and extend the 1,362m runway to 1,800m was launched in April 2007.
However, only 1,476m of the runway is being used because of obstructions, including the trees at the edge of the airport.
Mohd Ali said the 1,800m runway would be operational by Sept 1 with Firefly launching its inaugural flight from Malacca to Singapore with its ATR72 aircraft.
An additional RM60mil will be spent to extend the runaway to 2,135m to allow fully-loaded Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 aircraft to land at the airport by November.

daeng_jal May 30th, 2009, 07:19 AM Melaka Airport's New Terminal Creates Another History For The Historical City
May/05/2009
http://www.malaysiaairports.com.my/view.php?website_id=129&dbIndex=0&id=832
BATU BERENDAM – Melaka, the 'Historical City' chalks up another history when the airport relocates to a brand new terminal which starts operations today.
The total project cost was RM131.5 million, funded by the Federal Government and the project management consultant was KLIA Consultancy Services Sdn. Bhd. (KLIA Consult) while the contractor was Uni-Integrated Sdn. Bhd. The project started in April 2007 and completed in April 2009. The airport is now known as Melaka Airport instead of Batu Berendam Airport.
Member of the media witnessed the first landing at the airport today when Riau Airlines touches down at 9.15 am and the passengers were greeted and presented souvenirs by Y.A.B. Datuk Seri Hj. Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam, Chief Minister of Melaka. Members of the media were also given a tour of the new terminal.
The old terminal ceased operations with the departure of Riau Airlines to Pekan Baru at 10.00am yesterday.
Dato' Seri Bashir Ahmad, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports said: "This is our commitment to further enhance the airport users' experience when using the airport. The new terminal will offer better services and facilities, in line with the increasing expectations of customers."
Compared to the old terminal which could only handle 0.3 million passengers per annum, the new terminal can accommodate up to 1.5 million passengers per annum. It has six check-in counters for international and domestic flights.
The new terminal has two parking bays capabale of accommodating B734/A320 and four parking bays for GAA. The terminal building is capable of handling 300 passengers per peak hour compared to 100 previously. Passenger comfort level has also been elevated, from 20 sq. m to 24.5 sq. m.
While the old terminal had only three immigration counters for both arrival and departure, the new terminal has four counters to handle departure and six to handle arrival. Three baggage carousels have been installed to handle baggage for departure and arrival flights.
Commercial activities are offered with outlets for F&B and a duty free shop. Car park lots totalling 90 are available for the public, while 20 are allocated for staff, 10 for taxis and 10 for buses.
The terminal is configured with 38 CCTV cameras for security monitoring. The public can also enjoy ample seating at the airport with 370 seats available. Currently, Riau Airlines is operating from this airport. The airport operates from 7.00am to 7.00pm daily. The new telephone number for the terminal is 06-3191707.
For the year 2008, Melaka airport processed a total of 23,751 passenger movements, handled 178,618 kg cargo shipments and 700 aircraft movements.
The Batu Berendam Airport was officially opened on Oct 1952 by the Duchess of Kent. It is located 10 kilometres from Malacca town. Under the Japanese Occupation during the Second World War, the airport saw little improvement. Further construction only took place under the British from 1948 onwards.

Tiga Lagi Syarikat Berminat Guna Kemudahan LTAM - Mohd Ali

MASJID JADI PUSAT PENTADBIRAN - MOHD ALI

nazrey July 19th, 2009, 11:07 PM Firefly urged to ply Melaka-Batam route
Sunday, 19 July 2009 20:44
BATAM (Indonesia): The Melaka government will ask Malaysia's community airline Firefly to operate direct flights from the Batu Berendam Airport in Melaka to the Hang Nadim Airport here.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the service was important to strengthen ties between Melaka and the Indonesian island and to encourage tourism in both areas.
"Many people in the Riau islands including Batam are keen to come to Melaka, especially to seek medical treatment under the health tourism programme," he said after the opening of the Gedung Asrama Quran Centre", here, today.
It is a Quran learning centre built at a cost of RM426,545, including RM100,000 from the Melaka government.
At the function, the hostel which now accommodates 400 students, was named Asrama Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam. Also present was Riau Governor Ismeth Abdullah.
Mohd Ali said the air service available now was from the Batu Berendam Airport to Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau province, while the journey by ferry from Batam to Stulang Laut in Johor would take two hours.
"It will take another two and a half hours to Melaka by road on the North-South Expressway, while the flight from Batam to Melaka will only take 45 minutes."
He said many people in the Riau islands would like to seek medical treatment in Melaka due to the reasonable charges while the medical expertise and modern equipment were on far with that in developed countries.
He also said that from this Sept 1, Firefly would serve the Batu Berendam-Singapore route and hoped the airline would add the Batu Berendam-Batam route.
Meanwhile, Ismeth said when direct flights from Melaka-Batam could materialise, the service would definitely foster ties between the people of Batam and Melaka.
Batam, which is 715 sq km in size, has a population of 991,400.
Mohd Ali, who is also the president of Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam (DMDI) or Malay World Muslim World, said the DMDI finance house planned to implement a number of economic projects in the Riau islands. — Bernama
9MMRD August 8th, 2009, 03:49 AM MALACCA: After spending RM131.5mil to upgrade the Malacca International Airport (MIA), the state government had to stomach the disappointing news that two major low-cost carriers are not interested to fly there.
Firefly, a subsidiary of Malaysian Airline System, pulled out at the last minute, while AirAsia only showed lukewarm interest in using the airport as one of its main destination.
A disappointed Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said he had received a letter from Firefly noting they have scrapped plans to fly to Singapore from Malacca.
“Firefly claimed it had insufficient bookings and that we did not help to promote the routes.
“It added that we did not give any incentives to them.
“They even requested the state to pay RM75 for each of the unsold seats, but this impossible,” he told reporters after launching the 6th MATTA fair at Dataran Pahlawan here yesterday.
As for the claim of insufficient bookings, Mohd Ali said the state government had checked at the website earlier and it showed flight from Malacca to Singapore was fully booked.
However, subsequent check on Firefly’s official website showed the Malacca-Singapore routes had been removed.

9MMRD August 10th, 2009, 03:24 AM KUALA LUMPUR: Low-cost carrier Firefly has postponed its plan to launch the Malacca-Singapore route.
Its marketing and communications head Angelina Fernandez said the postponement was to allow Firefly to restrategise its plans.
She said this would enable the company to find ways to fulfil the Malacca government’s request to fly from the state to Indonesian destinations such as Pekan Baru, Djambi, Palembang and Batam to tap the medical tourism market.
“We shall continue our dialogue with the Malacca government.
“We remain optimistic that Firefly will light up Malacca just like how we did for Perak,’’ she said.
Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam had earlier expressed his disappointment with Firefly for scrapping its plans to fly to Singapore from the state, which had spent RM131.5mil to upgrade its airport.

Published: 2009/08/13
MALAYSIA'S community airlines, Firefly Sdn Bhd, has suspended its planned Singapore-Melaka route scheduled for commencement on September 1, said managing director Eddy Leong.
The move would allow the airline to evaluate in greater detail the request by the Melaka state government to focus on the Indonesian sector.
The Melaka Government recently asked the airlines to focus more on Indonesian routes such as Pekanbaru, Djambi and Palembang to boost medical tourism.
"We will continue to talk to the state government. We remain positive that Firefly will light up Melaka just like how we did for Perak," he said in a statement.
Following the suspension of the Singapore-Melaka route, Leong said Firefly would re-deploy the aircraft meant for the sector to the Singapore-Ipoh sector.
Firefly will operate daily flights between Singapore and Ipoh from September 1. Currently, it serves the sector four times a week. - Bernama

MELAKA MINTA PERTIMBANGAN PERDANA MENTERI
rizalhakim September 28th, 2009, 06:55 AM Kerja naik taraf LTBB berjalan lancar
MELAKA 27 Sept.

The Batu Berendam Airport(LTBB) here, is expected to begin operations for international flights in mid-January next year, said Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.
He said that the LTBB would be known as the Melaka International Airport after the inauguration by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak on January 15.
"With the inauguration by the Prime Minister, a new era will begin for this airport," he told reporters after the meeting of the Melaka State Assembly at Seri Negeri, Ayer Keroh here, today.
Mohd Ali hoped that budget airline AirAsia Bhd, would begin operations mid-January next year for flights from Melaka-Penang-Langkawi, Melaka-Penang-Jakarta and other international destinations such as Medan, Padang, Pekan Baru and Surabaya.
He also expressed the hope that Malaysia Airlines (MAS) will also start using the Melaka International Airport. "I will also write to the Philippines budget airline, Cebu Pacific Air, to start using this airport," he said.
The project to raise the status of the LTBB is being undertaken by Konsortium Uni-Integrated to house a new 7,000 sq m terminal complete with various facilities to receive domestic and international flights.
The airport runway has been extended from 1,476 metres to 2,135 metres to enable Boeing and Airbus aircraft to land and take-off.
The process to enlarge and improve the airport costing RM131.5 million began on April 23, 2007 to provide facilities for health tourists, especially from Sumatera, which has now reached 60,000 annually.
The new LTBB terminal can handle 1.5 million passengers annually compared to just 300,000 previously. It has four counters for departures and six for arrivals for both domestic and international flights.
The LTBB also has two parking bays suitable for Boeing 734 aircraft and the Airbus 320. -- BERNAMA

SHAH FIRDAUS January 27th, 2010, 02:16 PM Melaka Government Offers To Take Over Management Of Airport Terminal
MELAKA, Jan 27 (Bernama) -- The Melaka government has expressed interest to take over the management of the new RM190 milion international airport terminal in Batu Berendam here.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the state government and its partner, Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd, had forwarded the offer to the present operator, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB).
"The joint takeover plan has been submitted to the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) of the Prime Minister's Department," he told reporters at Seri Negeri Wednesday.
The EPU's response was that the proposed takeover should be negotiated with MAHB for agreement, he said.
Senai Airport Terminal Services is the first independent air operator in Malaysia and has been running the Senai Airport terminal since 2003.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is scheduled to officiate the Melaka International Airport on Feb 4.
The airport has a new 7,000 sq m terminal complete with various facilities to handle domestic and international flights. It now has the capacity to receive 1.5 million passengers annually compared with only 300,000 previously, and the main target is health tourists from Indonesia.
Ali said he had discussed the matter with MAHB Managing Director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad.
If successful, he said, the joint venture between the state government and Senai Airport Terminal Services planned to reduce the airport tax which currently stood at RM52 per passenger.
"RM52 is too high for low fare airline AirAsia or Malaysia Airlines to operate using the Melaka airport," he said.
He said MAHB had given a RM25 discount for the first year and RM12 for the second year from the original charge of RM52 for AirAsia to operate at the Melaka airport but the airline's request was RM8 for each passenger.
"At the same time, AirAsia has also offered to manage the Melaka airport terminal," Ali said.
He said the state government's strategy to attract airline companies to use the airport was by reducing airport charges.
Only Riau Airlines presently uses the airport for daily flights between Melaka and Pekanbaru in Riau, Indonesia.

9MMRD February 5th, 2010, 02:31 AM MALACCA: The Malacca Government has been asked to formulate strategies to promote the new Malacca International Airport as the main gateway for visitors from neighbouring countries and to optimise its usage.
Speaking when opening the airport in Batu Berendam here, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the airport had modern facilities to attract tourists, including medical tourists, and investors.
“This is the advantage of having an airport. There will be an increase in the number of visitors and investors while medical tourism will also see an upturn,” he said.
It’s official: Najib stamping his mark after opening the Malacca International Airport in Batu Berendam yesterday. Among those witnessing the opening is Mohd Ali (at the Prime Minister’s right) and Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha (right).
Najib, who is on a one-day visit to the state, earlier arrived on a special aircraft at the airport which the Government plans to turn into a hub for medical tourism.
He said among the aspects which the state government should focus on was connectivity by attracting more airlines such as Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and AirAsia to operate from there.
New destinations, such as Medan in Indonesia, should also be identified, he added. Among the earliest airlines to operate at the airport was Indonesia’s Riau Airlines, serving the Pekan Baru-Melaka sector, he said.
Najib said the “Malacca” brand was renowned internationally due to its historical heritage.
He said developing modern elements such as the airport would further put Malacca prominently on the global map, adding that the aviation sector had a huge multiplying effect to the tune of 12.5 times.
At a news conference later at Seri Bendahara, after meeting Malacca Barisan Nasional leaders, Najib was asked on the Malacca government’s proposal that the RM60mil loan from the Federal Government to upgrade the airport be converted into assistance.
“We’ll see,” Najib said, adding that it would be discussed with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.
Meanwhile, Mohd Ali said the airport would be among the busiest airports in Malaysia as there were also non-commercial flights, run by the Malaysian Flying Academy, operating there.
Last year, the Malacca airport handled 23,751 passengers.

MALACCA: Malacca cannot rely on the history of the state alone to promote tourism.
The state government should formulate strategies to promote the state as a gateway for visitors from neighbouring countries and as a medical tourism hub now that it has a new RM190 million airport in Batu Berendam.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the state government should optimise the use of the airport by attracting more airlines.
Najib said with a modern and bigger Malacca International Airport, the state would surely see an increase in the number of visitors and investors and also pave the way to turn Malacca into a medical tourism hub in the region.
"Imagine how huge the spin-offs will be if we can bring in one million visitors through the Malacca International Airport.
"This is why I am calling for the state to take full advantage of the new airport and promote it further.
"For this, the state government must work closely with the Tourism Ministry," he said at the opening of the airport here.
Also present were Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Abu Seman Yusop, the prime minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, and Ali's wife, Datin Seri Asmah Abdul Rahman.
Riau Airlines from Indonesia is already operating from the airport to Pekan Baru in Indonesia.
"I hope to see it increasing its flights to cover Medan," Najib said.
Meanwhile, Ali said medical tourism was among the 12 sub-sectors introduced by the state in promoting tourism.
"Health tourism attracted 70,815 patients in 2008 and 51,511 last year. A total of 67,175 of the patients in 2008 were from Indonesia. Medical tourism also brought in RM135 million for Malacca last year."
He also said Singapore's Lion Air was expected to operate from the airport next month.

MELAKA TERSOHOR SEANTERO DUNIA - NAJIB

daeng_jal March 5th, 2010, 01:57 AM State govt proposes to take over Melaka airport from MAHB
January 29, 2010, Friday
KUCHING: The recent proposal by the government to takeover Melaka Airport from Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) may help to further reduce the company’s operational costs but the financial impact will only be seen at a later date.To note, Melaka government had recently expressed interest in taking over the management of the new RM190 million international airport terminal in Batu Berendam. Chief Minister Datuk Ali Rustam said the government and its partner, Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd had forwarded the offer to the present operator, MAHB.
OSK Research Sdn Bhd (OSK Research) in its research report said the joint takeover plan had been submitted to the Economic Planning Unit that had in return asked both parties to negotiate with MAHB to reach an agreement
The old Melaka Airport, which recorded about 50,000 passengers a year, was in a loss making situation. Despite the fact that the new airport was undergoing an expansion and would soon be upgraded to an international airport, it would take a while before its annual passenger figures cross the one million mark or becomes operationally profitable.
Therefore, the Chief Minister’s request to lower the airport tax may also be well compensated by the government under the new operating agreement, which clearly differentiates MAHB’s socio-economic role from commercial accountability.
To recap, the new terminal could accommodate up to 1.5 million passengers a year compared with the old terminal, which could only handle 300,000 passengers per annum. The upgraded runway would allow Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 aircrafts to take off but only one international route to Riau, Indonesia was recorded at the moment, the research firm added.
As Melaka had joined the World Heritage List of the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) since 2008, the historical state would attract more leisure travellers in the longer term and in turn boost the air passenger numbers.
However, with an annual capacity of only 1.5 million passengers compared with the near 50 million passengers handled by MAHB, the financial losses may be limited despite the bright long-term prospects.
Notwithstanding the current factors, OSK Research pegged the fair value at RM4.22 per share based on 16 times financial year 2010 earnings per share.

Totally agree with you... This is such a big joke especially when they mentioned Lion Air is Singapore based... I guess they must have mixed up the Tiger with the Lions... well after all Singapore is also known as Lion City... people do 'assume'....
emjay March 8th, 2010, 03:47 AM I might be too skeptical, news saying this and that airlines will be coming to Malacca's airport and until now still Riau airline is the only airliner using this new airport. Yet it has been a month this new airport been officially opened and usually during the opening ceremony it will coincidently receiving new airliner during that occasion. But until now who is the new airliner that already comfirmed coming to this new airport? Or is is just the CM assumption?
Now they are talking on taking over the airport terminal since MAHB cannot allure new airline to come over. Come on! they are talking on our tax payer monies to do this and that and still no result and yet blaming other party as an excuse!
Actually Malacca does not need an airport. The only thing they need is a better land transportation. Last time I've met some foreigners at Malacca Century Hotel (now already changed to Mahkota Hotel) during the Formula 1 event at sepang. They just came down to Malaysia for the sake of watching the F1 and they also chose Malacca as their place to stay. They don't mind travelling for an hour to any place around Malacca, and since Sepang is also within that time distance.
So it means we need to re look on any new things especially involving tax payer monies before start spending it. I'm afraid at the end it is just a mere certain group that benefit from the project and not the rakyat!
9MMRD March 8th, 2010, 09:44 AM Totally agree with you... This is such a big joke especially when they mentioned Lion Air is Singapore based... I guess they must have mixed up the Tiger with the Lions... well after all Singapore is also known as Lion City... people do 'assume'....

off topic. any one heard of silverfly airlines which will be based in ipoh?
daeng_jal March 8th, 2010, 10:27 AM errmms, actually PM najib actually officially open an unfinished airport (yes, hes the PM and he can do that)
even if it finished, there's still no refueling capacity
the 190 mil was a loan from the fed to the state to upgrade an airport that was federally own (WTH? right?)..
MAHB and the state are fighting for control over the airport
airasia said MAHB impose fee were high, firefly wanted tax payer money as subsidies..
and not to mention our transport minister probably gonna be out of job this very month..
then again, MAHB and federal gov may not keen on this airport very much, they just go along with it bcoz some loser had taken a loan to upgrade their airport for free...ali knew when he make the loan, he unofficially become a stakeholder and can demand this and that.... that why PM ask ali to promote it yourself...too much politicking over such a tiny and unimportant airport...anyhow it will be in everyone best interest to allowed SATS to take over and modeled it after gold coast airport...
AFL March 8th, 2010, 11:08 AM Did the members of the public give any thoughts or even protest to the Melaka government criticizing the airport project before construction starts? In Malaysia, planning and consultation rarely involves public participation.
That is one of the main reason that they (the developers/planners/governments) can implement projects as they please. There is no public feedback and the majority of the public themselves are not proactive in the planning process.
The government is in control of decision making process. their administration system and bureaucracy, legislation and procedures are designed to maintain government control.
All in all, what I can say is the airport project does not involve all stakeholders (why on earth they still want to build the airport when even the airlines are not keen to utilize it - did they even discuss with airlines about the project?)
The decision making is unfair (the information given doesn't respond to the real needs of Melaka (or any other states) - It's merely a political propaganda, to say to the rakyat that we will going to implement a mega project and so on)

TERIMA KONTRAK RM4.5 BILION
9MMRD May 5th, 2010, 06:17 AM KUCHING, May 4 (Bernama) -- Melaka wants low-cost carrier AirAsia to introduce direct flights from the Melaka International Airport (MIA) to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu to boost joint capacity in the tourism sector.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the proposal for the direct flights was made to AirAsia chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes last year and the airline was now in the process of reviewing its domestic routes.
"I hope there will be at least one direct flight each week to the two destinations. For example, the direct flight departs in the morning and returns in the afternoon or the next day," he told reporters after handing out an official invitation to attend the 13th Malaysia Games (Sukma) to be held in Melaka from June 10 to 19 to Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud at Wisma Bapa Malaysia, here Tuesday.
Mohd Ali said AirAsia had the capability to provide the direct flights as the MIA now had the capacity to receive the Boeing 737 and Airbus 320 aircraft.
He said Melaka was also keen to develop the education sector with Sarawak in view of the great potential which could be exploited jointly.

AirAsia Bakal Operasi Bulan Depan

nazrey May 11th, 2010, 05:35 AM Low-cost carriers to use Malacca airport after all

MALACCA: The recently opened RM190mil Malacca International Airport will finally see international low-cost carriers using the airport here following earlier worries that it will become a white elephant.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam announced that both Firefly and AirAsia would make their debut at the airport soon.
Firefly had agreed to have chartered flights to Medan in Sumatra, Indonesia from here beginning May 28 following successful negotiations with Puteri Holiday Resort, he told reporters this after chairing the state exco meeting here recently.
He said Firefly would provide the flights with the resort arranging tours between Medan and Malacca.
“The inaugural flight will take off from the airport here on Friday morning and return on Sunday evening,” he said, adding that Firefly would later provide regular flights based on response.
Mohd Ali said AirAsia had also given positive indication to using the airport for regular flights to Penang and Medan in the near future.
“I have spoken to Datuk Tony Fernandes who said that the company will brief the state in two weeks’ time when they will begin their operations here,” he said.
The airport had undergone a RM131mil project to extend the runway with a second extension and upgrading works carried out to enable it to cater to Boeing 737A and Airbus 320A.
Covering 7,000sqm, the airport’s new terminal has facilities for domestic and international flights and can handle 1.5 million passengers annually.
The renovated airport was opened by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Feb 4.

Maybe... but considering Malacca is like... 3hr drive journey away from Singapore... I see a lot of people will still go for driving or bus... think about it, you need to check in at the airport let's say 1.5 hr before, flight time is let's say overall take 1 hr (plus taxi), then you need to wait at immigration and luggage let's say another 30 mins. Total is around 3hr... they are the same but flying with AA or Firefly, you need to pay airport taxes, surcharge and all the hidden costs, if I am traveling to Malacca from Singapore, I will still put coach or drive as my first option... well, this is just my rough estimation... maybe I am wrong...

- Bernama

Singaporeans love to drive their cars all the way to Malacca for various reasons...
1. Much cheaper gas/petrol in Malaysia.
2. A chance to speed down the long stretch of highway after being confined in claustophobic Singapore.
3. Trunk space for them to bring back the keropok and other goodies for their shopping sprees as well as stopovers in the many towns along the way.
Why not fly to Malacca?
It is inconvenient and probably more expensive to travel all the way to Changi, wait an hour or so to fly, arrive in Malacca Airport and probably ripped off by meter-avoiding taxi drivers to be dropped off in the middle of Malacca town. How to get around next? It is not like Malaysian cities/towns have good and comfy transportation systems for tourists, especially Singaporeans who are so used to their very efficient network of transportation system. They can't lug all the heavy shopping bags around town. The return trip home poses another set of inconveniences.
To me, the Malaccan airport is another ego trip. Might as well use the money efficiently to build a hi-speed railway system linking KLIA to Malacca downtown. This would make much more sense.

anyway since, its melakan tax dollar not malaysian, coz ali took a federal loan to build these!!!..so MAHB has to go..

MELAKA - Bagi memaksimumkan penggunaan Lapangan Terbang Antarabangsa Melaka (LTAM) yang bernilai RM131 juta, kerajaan negeri merancang memiliki sebuah syarikat penerbangan sendiri yang dikenali sebagai Melaka Air.
Ketua Menteri, Datuk Seri Mohd.

i wonder why can't they just extend the erl to melaka. They r just too KL-centric, erl only covers kl conurbation, then leaving behind melaka which is merely 100km away from klia, not connected at all to the so-called world-class airport. :bash:
it won't become the major regional airport if the connectivity is still this low-class.

Wings Air Yakin Potensi LTAM

daeng_jal July 13th, 2010, 01:11 PM Another direct flight into Melaka

BATU BERENDAM – The tourism industry in Melaka received another shot in the arm when the State's newly opened international airport received yet another direct flight from Pekan Baru, Indonesia.
The twin-turboprop ATR 72 short-haul regional airliner made its maiden flight and landed at the Melaka International Airport (LTAM) here about 12.45pm, carrying with it some 60 passengers.
Prior to this, another Indonesian airline, Riau Air, has been operating flight between Melaka and Pekan Baru over the past few years.
The commencement of regular scheduled flight between both destinations by Wings Air is seen as a move in the direct direction, especially in promoting and utilizing the airport as a gateway for foreign visitors to the State.
Apart from that, it also signals the State's attention of giving more focus to the airline industry and conducting more flights to other Asian countries.
State Transport, Information and Consumers committe chairman, Datuk R.Raghavan, said he is confident that the LTAM will become a major gateway for tourists, not only into this State but also into Malaysia.
He said to date, the State Government had conducted a series of negotiations with several airlines in a bid to enable them to conduct flights into and out of Melaka.
"The State Government has also signed an agreement with the Eastern Airlines in an efforts to bring Chinese tourists direct into Melaka," he told reporters this after witnessing the maiden flight of Wings Air here.
Meanwhile, Perumal said although the State Government has established Melaka Air, the airline has yet to be functional and it is hoped that one of these days, it will give its focus on domestic flights.
He said although the airline has yet to become operational, he hoped that it will evolve into an identity to be associated with Melaka.
"I am confident that this will help the health tourism into becoming one of the most important tourism sub-sectors in the State," he added.

50 Penerbangan Terus Ke China Mulai September

nazrey July 20th, 2010, 06:24 AM Inaugural flight from Sumatra another feather in the cap for Malacca
By ALLISON LAI Tuesday July 20, 2010

Medical hub: It will be easier for tourist from Sumatra to
come to the state especially those seeking medical treatment.
MALACCA: Wings Air which touched down at the Malacca International Airport in Batu Berendam on July 9 will be a boost to the state’s tourism industry especially the health tourism sector.
State Tourism committee chairman Datuk Seet Har Chow, who was present to welcome the inaugural flight from Pekan Baru, Sumatra in Indonesia, said 3,000 tourists from Sumatra visited Malacca every month.
“With the daily flights from Pekan Baru, it will be easier for passengers from Sumatra to come to Malacca, especially those seeking medical treatment,” he said.
The initiation of air travel to Pekan Baru was another feather in the cap for the RM191mil airport which has been upgraded and extended.
Wings Air, a subsidiary of Indonesia’s low-cost carrier, Lion Air, started its daily route between Pekan Baru and Malacca on July 9 and is the second airline to offer the route after Riau Air.
The inaugural flight saw a French-made ATR72-500 aircraft arriving at the airport at 12.45pm with 60 passengers after it departed from Sultan Syarif Qassim II International Airport in Pekan Baru, receiving a brief welcome from the state government and airport authority.
The aircraft left 30 minutes later for Pekan Baru with 45 passengers.
State Transportation, Informa-tion and Consumer committee chairman Datuk R. Perumal said Wings Air offereddaily flights to and from Pekan Baru with the arrival time at 12.15pm and departure at 12.45pm.
“This will give more options to passengers as Riau Airs flights to Pekan Baru are scheduled earlier with arrival and departure time at 8.20am and 9.45am respectively,” he told at the airport recently.
Perumal said the Pekan Baru-Malacca route was only the beginning to air links here as discussions were underway for Wings Air to open more routes to other Indonesian destinations such as Medan and Padang.
“We are also having talks with other airlines to introduce domestic flights to Kuching, Penang, Langkawi and Kuala Terengganu,” he added.
He said the state was also looking at introducing chartered flights to Xinjiang, Nanjing and Macau through the initiative of a private tour company from Kuala Lumpur.
He said the direct flights would see Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 planes using the airport to cater to the rising influx of tourists from China.

MALACCA: Efforts to fully utilise the Malacca International Airport in Batu Berendam received a much-needed boost following plans to build fuel depot facilities at the airport.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said work on the depot is scheduled to begin next month and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
“The State Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) has started a joint venture through Malacca Oil and Gas Sdn Bhd to oversee the completion of the project,” he said after officiating the Melaka Maju 2010 Seminar at MITC in Ayer Keroh.
He added that at the moment, the airport can only cater to the refuelling of smaller planes such as Fokkers and ATR aircrafts capable of transporting 40 and 72 passengers.
“We hope that with the completion of the refuelling depot we can see the arrival of larger aircrafts such as Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 and more international flights,” he said, adding that he hoped that Eastern China Airlines could introduce chartered flights to China five times a month.
Earlier, Mohd Ali had proposed for the Eastern China Airlines to ply their route here from September but the plan had hit a snag as there were no refuelling facilities for larger airplanes.
“We hope the airlines can start as soon as the refuelling depot is completed,” he said.
The airport had undergone a RM131mil project to extend the runway with a second extension and upgrading works carried out to enable it to cater to Boeing 737A and Airbus 320A.
Covering and area of 7,000sq m, the Batu Berendam airport’s new terminal has facilities for domestic and international flights and can handle about 1.5 million passengers annually.
dengilo August 26th, 2010, 09:12 AM So how much more for the fuel depot???
World 2 World August 26th, 2010, 09:16 AM what is next? a mini themepark to utilise d airport?:bash:
apymah August 26th, 2010, 11:17 AM It seems like MIA's construction was NOT planned carefully and by professionals. First it was the runway being too short for Boeings and Airbuses, then planes had to be half full of passengers before it can land or take take off. After that, they found a tree (or ? trees) was hampering extension works of the landing strip. Now ,refuelling is a problem. It seems more like the planners have first world ideas but fourth world capabilities !! What is wrong with dea:ohno::ohno:r old Melaka ... the place is so old that those involved are suffering from severe Alzheimer's ???
tbc August 26th, 2010, 11:23 AM How much extra money they need to throw in for a facility that is of apparent necessity like five times monthly - assuming China Eastern is really commited to the charter, and I emphasize, charter (meaning temporary) flights ?
I understand airport at Terengganu is also without refuelling facilities
However, MAS (Charter) had successfully mounted the haj flights to/from that airport by cleverly planning their logistical requirements beforehand - like sending jet fuel to TGG overland for refuelling purpose
Surely that is a more cost effective way of doing things, at least temporarily, until such time the need for that investment in infrastructure is properly justified. But then what do I know about these things ....... !
emjay August 26th, 2010, 02:49 PM See!! MAHB don't has any intention to build extra facilities at the so called "International airport" The reason is just simple, NOT WORTH IT!! So what the heck SEDC Malacca need to involve in this refuelling facility? SEDC Malacca is chaired by the CM, therefore the SEDC will ask from federal to give grant or loans for this project. At the end 'wang rakyat' will be utilised for cronies project initiated by the 'the most brilliant' CM in Malaysia:bash:
daeng_jal August 26th, 2010, 03:23 PM ahh complain for the sake of complain.
the plan as always is grander, but MAHB and the fed are not interested coz their anak emas is like 70km aways
and they make do with what they had lah, the fed only agreed to upgrade the terminal, after much lobying the runway extension is done from a LOAN by the state
and Ak said they dont wanna land without having all the facilities, now the state have to put refueling facilities.
of cource MAHB would not allowed the state to take over the airport, and they themself are not doing anything to promote it. and all negotiation extention and promotion are done by the state without actually running it.
well,at least this Cm is doing something, rather than other MB who goes around talk shit and do nothing kecuali besarkan tel**..

The Melaka government’s proposal to take over the Malacca International Airport has ruffled feathers at Malaysian Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB).
While the state wants to boost passenger traffic to its newly renovated international airport, the proposed takeover, if it becomes a trend with other states following suit, would impact MAHB’s business model.
At the centre of the issue is the loss-making airport in Batu Berendam. MAHB recently spent over RM100 million to refurbish the airport, most of which was spent to lengthen its runway.
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam recently announced that the state had submitted plans to the Economic Planning Unit in the Prime Minister’s Department and to MAHB to take over the management of the airport. The state, he says, will do it in partnership with Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS), which currently operates the Senai airport in Johor.
However, a SATS official has denied such a partnership.
Notwithstanding the partnership issues, the state wants to take over the airport as it claims the airport tax levied by MAHB on passengers, also known as passenger service charge (PSC), is too high. MAHB applies a uniform rate for all airports under its management — RM51 for international travellers and RM9 for domestic travellers.
Low-cost carrier terminals (LCCT), which also come under MAHB, charge a lower rate of RM25 per passenger for international travel and RM6 for domestic.
Airlines, particularly those adopting a low-cost model such as AirAsia Bhd, have repeatedly lobbied for lower rates or at least variable rates, arguing that airports in Malaysia are not all equal.
Says an industry source, “How can you compare the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) with the airports in Melaka or Ipoh, or even the one in Terengganu?”
As they are not central destination points for travellers, the smaller airports need incentives to increase passenger traffic, which is what the Melaka is trying to do with the takeover, the source adds.
In the case of the Melaka airport, Ali Rustam says AirAsia was looking for a PSC of RM8 per passenger in order to set up a route there. The airport is currently only serviced by Indonesia’s Riau Airlines, which flies five times a week from Pekanbaru.
An airline official contacted by The Edge says lower PSCs are needed to grow routes as the cost, which is passed on to the airport authority through the airline, pad ticket prices.
“By lowering the PSC, the route has a chance to grow. It usually takes between six months to a year to see that happen, and a longer period for the route to be established,” says an airline official. “If you expect everyone to pay for initial losses from taxes, forget it. We don’t have deep pockets, especially in the current environment.”
He says MAHB needs to impose variable rates so that airports like the one in Melaka can attract airlines, which then builds passenger traffic.
MAHB, however, has a different view. The rationale for a one-rate policy is to promote the growth of airport infrastructure throughout the country, and the vast difference in taxation between international and domestic travel is to help subsidise the latter, says a source close to the airport operator.
“Although MAHB doesn’t comment on the issue, it has a role to play in national policy to promote domestic travel, while at the same time being accountable to its shareholders,” he says.
“Moreover, charging a uniform rate prevents tax rates in central hubs such as KLIA from ballooning. MAHB also recognises that not all airports in Malaysia are equal, but it prefers to address that inequity through the use of rebates.”
For instance, MAHB launched the Airline Recovery Programme last November, in which new airlines flying into KLIA, KLIA-LCCT and Subang Airport will receive an incentive payment of RM10 per inbound passenger for the first 12 months.
The source says it is unlikely that MAHB will sell the airport as it would open a Pandora’s box. At the moment, the only airport outside MAHB’s control is Senai, which was sold to the well-connected Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary to facilitate his plans to build a sea and air cargo hub.
However, Ali Rustam believes that a state-controlled entity will be able to do better. Melaka is also betting that increased passenger traffic will raise tourism revenue even if the airport remains a loss-making concern, with the cost of operating it absorbed by taxpayers in the state.
One concern is whether lower airport taxes will be sufficient to generate passenger demand. There is no doubt that cheaper taxes will act as an incentive for airlines to set up a route to Melaka, but passenger demand depends on more than just cheaper taxes.
Melaka is not that far away from KLIA, and international travellers prefer to travel to central hubs unless they have a specific reason to fly elsewhere. Whether the state can provide that lure for international passengers remains in question.
Both the state and MAHB have compelling reasons to own the airport. Whatever decision the federal government makes will set a precedent. If the takeover should go through, privatisation proposals in other states may follow. If it doesn’t, Melaka will have to think of other ways to increase the usage of its airport.

daeng_jal November 16th, 2010, 09:50 AM Melaka And Batam Looking At Direct Flight Services
From Nasarudin Omar
BATAM, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- The Melaka State Government and Indonesia's Riau Islands (Kepri) plan to work together towards having direct flights between the Melaka International Airport (LTAM) and Hang Nadim Airport here.
Melaka Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, said he and the Governor of Kepri, Muhammad Sani have basically agreed to the sharing of an aeroplane be it Boeing or other aircraft to be rented to transport tourists from both sides. It would be for both normal and medical related tourism.
"Melaka is a popular destination for the people of Sumatera to get treatment in private hospitals here and at the same time there are also tourists from Melaka who are keen to come here to tour and that is why direct flights will be suitable," he told reporters here after officiating the Dunia Melayu Dunia Islam (Malay World Islam World)(DMDI)'s 11th convention at the Sumatera Convention Centre here Thursday.
The DMDI's conference, being held for the first time out of Melaka, was also officiated by Mohd Ali and Muhammad. More than 1,000 participants comprising DMDI members from Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Thailand, Singapore and Brunei attended the event.
DMDI, formed 11 years ago has its secretariat in Melaka and covers collaboration among member nations in the areas of languages, culture, economy, welfare, education and tourism.
Mohd Ali said he would be negotiating with the tourist agent in Sumatera and private hospitals in Melaka, adding that direct flights have been also suggested for the destinations of Palembang, Jambi, Padang, Medan, Bandung, Pontianak in Kalimantan.
"We have the joint partnership between Riau Air and Dragon Air in bringing passengers through the LTAM-Pekan Baru direct flights which currently stands at seven times a week," he said.
Mohd Ali said he also has the offer from the Firefly airline to rent their plane at a rate of RM600,000 a month or RM7.2 million a year.
Meanwhile, Muhammad said there were four flights weekly between the Hang Nadim Airport and Subang Airport.
"This cooperation in airlink with Melaka is sutable as the majority of the people from both countries, use the ferry to link Batam and Melaka," he said.

A Malaysian chartered aircraft carrying 81 passengers and crew was reportedly detained by the Indonesian Armed Forces at the Djuanda International Airport in Surabaya yesterday afternoon for allegedly entering Indonesian air space without permission.
The Kompas.com news portal quoted Indonesian military spokesman First Admiral Iskandar Sitompul as saying that the BAE 146-200 aircraft left Dili, Timor Leste, and landed at the airport at 12.45pm yesterday.
The report said that the aircraft had been given permission to enter Indonesian air space, but the agent for the flight failed to secure landing rights.

Melaka International Airport caters for different category of passengers namely tourists whether medical tourists, heritage tourists or leisure tourists. KLIA is the gateway to Malaysia. It caters for business and corporate communities as it serves Malaysian capital city and commercial centre, majority of tourists arrivals as well as students studying overseas. Thus, Melaka International Airport does not duplicate the role of KLIA and it will never dilute the usage of the biggest airport in Malaysia.

But the cost of maintaining an International Airport is still not justifying the purpose of the infrastructure. And yet we have not calculate the frequency of usage for this infrastructure. Futhermore, airfare is always much expensive than a boat trip, and we already have the ports in Johor (i assume the passenger facility is functioning), and Port Klang, and Melaka is in between this 2 ports and about 2+ hours drive from melaka.
Who is going to pay all this maintenance fee? Ali Rustam? or Voters?
I rather the money spent on upgrading all public transport in the town, rather to have a savvy airport and not being fully utilised.

yup,it much nicer to have train line in mlk,but it under federal juristiction,as for the airport the cost to upgrade are borne by the state..well at least AR do something, unlike other MB who just wait n wait n wait then blame the fed..
no,JB ferries terminal is not at the port, its in stulang, other than the 3 above mention, ferries also available in muar,PD and pontian to indonesia..n the problem with ferries is as most of the patient in mlk private hospital are indonesian..and it is a lot of hassle for sick people to get on a long bumbpy ferries ride..so if mlk can't handle the bussiness, the bssiness or rather patient will go somewhere else
skymermaid January 4th, 2011, 10:06 AM i think the airport shouldnt exist...
You should not argue about the existence of this airport. You should check the facts first. According to Wikipedia, this airport was built in 1952, before the country gained independence, may be even before many of us were born and before Subang International Airport was built. The flight from London carrying the team including the late Tunku landed at this airport after successful negotiation with the British for our country's independence. Hence, this airport has been used for international flight/s even before the recently upgraded status as an international airport.
XNeo January 4th, 2011, 10:14 AM But the cost of maintaining an International Airport is still not justifying the purpose of the infrastructure.
Ali Rustam? or Voters?
I rather the money spent on upgrading all public transport in the town, rather to have a savvy airport and not being fully utilised.
we need facts and figure, a reports of loss and profit.:)
LRT, KLIA mula-mula buka pun bukannya terus fully utilised and make profit, arent they?.
its about planning - short term and long term.
i think this airport for long term plan.
selamat maju jaya negeri melaka.
