G2GAP March 11th, 2009, 05:37 PM Great!! Love to see more picture updates on Belfast!! The Worthington Solicitors building is often overlooked as a great little building and its really easy to miss as you come round the corner from the bridge onto Oxford Street. Think i remember seeing over the door of the building walking past once that it was a christian school or something? Anyone know when it dates from?
citybus March 11th, 2009, 07:56 PM It's St. Malachy's Christian Brothers School, St Malachy's impressive church being a few streets away. Built in 1874 to the design of architect Alex McCallister, who also designed Good Shepard Convent on the Ormeau (dont know if it still exists). He also designed St. Mary's Hall, Bank st, and the large church in the Short Strand/ Lower Newton.
SLMCC Belfast March 11th, 2009, 11:00 PM The church is St Mathews in the strand. Good shepherd is still there but much of it has been redevloped by private developers. Pitty St Malachy's Church hadn't been finished to its original plans - What a masterpiece that would have been. Its beautiful as it is but imagine it full sized...

Is that the beautiful one, that is being done up at the moment on Alfred Street. What another church not complete? what is missing from the present layout-it always looked complete to me. Unlike St Anne's, St George's and May St Presby.
SLMCC Belfast March 12th, 2009, 02:25 PM It is the one that is being restored. If you ever get the chance, go inside and you will see how abruptly the chapel ends. It was supposed to continue, i would imagine given the plot, as far as cromac street. It was supposed to be the Catholic Cathedral of Down and Connor to seat 7000 but because of the Famine it was stopped and then St Peters in Divis took title later on. It is a real pity that it wasn't finished because although St Peters is imposing neogothic, it is not in the city centre and is not very accessible to anyone who is not from the Falls, whereas St Malachy's is right at the centre of the city.

This is totally new info that I never new about, thanks for that SLMCC Belfast.
A real pity, was it going to have a high tower or spire?(a spire probably wouldn't have suited the architecture) Why don't the catholic church, carry on with the work and complete it. It would be very symbolic-having a central cathedral. I always wondered why St Peter's was so far out. After all the prods spent years completing St. Annes, although I prefer the original tower to the steel spire. But lets not go there.
SLMCC Belfast March 14th, 2009, 03:22 AM The small turret that is on it now was to be all there was to it I think but it was to be a lot deeper than now. I have often thought about what I would do with that general Markets area if given the chance. I would complete the Cathedral and totally rebuild the area along a grid pattern in the style of the town houses which have managed to survive round there. I know the markets regeneration came up here before but I didnt post in time, I honestly think that given the value of the land but the nature of the established community there, the best we could do for our city is to improve the community to the point where it is accesible to all and the people who live there have pride enough to really look after the place. Would make for a very interesting social housing scheme - one that people actually find visually attractive?!! Anyway, my mad ideas over....
You're welcome on the info btw:-)

I always thought that a large park would be nice there, Leaving St Georges Market/Lanyon, cross East Bridge Street into a large park which runs right back to the Gasworks. Belfast City Council, could have a classic old headquarters in the park, facing right down Oxford Street. The City Hall could become a tourist attraction, museum and all that. A tall skyscraper or 2 at Maysfield would give a good backdrop to the park. That's my mad idea.

937delta August 31st, 2009, 12:11 AM I can see potential and beauty in the Gresham Street terrace, but no doubt it will all be demolished and become another covered 'abbey centre' castlecourt extension.

Any guesses when it dates from? ... It should def be retained to cling on to some character in the area...
belfastuniguy August 31st, 2009, 05:27 AM Those two areas are bloody awful.
I can not wait to see progress on North-East and then see the plans for North-West.
