Love the skyline. Wachovia (the white) and 401 North Main (the box) look great together!

There are a few good silhouettes there. The building leave a good impression on the skyline. While none strike me as feats of architecture there is still good design there. There is age and a mix of different eras. Overall more hight would be good. There is some density but no some much you lose the impression of each individual building. I was surprised to see this one at the top. But now I can see it got here on some merit

quite a dissapointing skyline for the home of Krispy Kreme Doughnuts! However that tall white building is cool, it looks kinda like a high rise mosque!

I like the fact that the RJR corporate headquarters building was a precursor for the Empire State Building. Built by the same architects, you could almost call it practice for the big boy.

Every Fathers Day, by the way, the Empire State Buildings sends a Fathers Day card to the RJR building. It's sort of a little ritual.

4/10. Two buildings, not much else. There also doesn't seem to be a very good place from which to view the skyline. The rusty old watertower seems to sour the view, and from other angles the skyline is hidden by trees.

It does not deserve a 4/10. It deserves at least a 6/10. Much better than the Norfolk skyline, and the city has 185,000 residents.
Hows that old saying go?... Something like People In Glass Houses Shouldn't throw Stones...? Pretty much sums it up for me.

lammius
November 16th, 2004, 06:04 AM
No glass house here. Winston-Salem, by those pictures, does not have a skyline worth rating above a 5. I gave it 4. So what?

Norfolk deserves the 3's it gets. If I posted pics of my city (New Brunswick) they'd get 0 and rightfully so.

Well it certainly wouldn't get a 10 but it does deserve more than 7.

I've always seen WS as a mini skyline version of Louisville, but just not as stunning upon first glance... Or second glance. hah
For some reason, I love the Aegon Center in Louisville. I find its dome gorgeous, but Wachovia's is... Eh, it's not as attractive.

the best place to view this skyline, IMO, is from the interstate; there's a hilly section before you get to it, and it looks really unexpected just popping up over the trees.

so i give it an 8/10, for that view and quality of the buildings.

The skyline of Winston Salem is hard to capture in its whole. It is far more impressive in real life. So, I give 8/10 to North Carolina's 2nd best/tallest skyline :okay:

The Art Deco 1920's Reynolds-American Building certainly isn't eyecatching...but it has been noticed by someone important:

-1929 AIA Building of the Year award winner
-1965 AIA Best Preserved Art Deco Building award winner
-1984 Art Deco Society of New York award winner for Best Restoration of an Art Deco Building.
:ohno:
"That white building" was designed by Cesar Pelli and is the tallest granite domed structure in the world.

I give my hometown of Winston-Salem an 8/10. Yes, I am biased but hey this is where my Family and I make our home. The city will only get better with the new minor league baseball park being built as well as more condo, retail, and biotech buildings.

Thanks for sharing all those great photo of my hometown. As the Gentlemen from Raleigh wrote. Winston Salem looks a lot better at street level.
