View Full Version : Gdansk - Wisloujscie fortress: unique monument!

GDANSK (Poland)

Built in XV and XVI century.

At present the fortress is in very bad condition but restauration works just started.

WISLOUJSCIE fortress in Gdansk is said to be unique monument on the world scale and it's very possible that it will be added (together with Gdansk historic Main Town) to the UNESCO world haritage list in the near future.

Is the main town of the city not on that list yet :?

unfortunately no! after warsaw was set on the list, the UNESCO said, no more a reconstructed town will be set on the list again... but... never say never ;) :D

No, that has nothing to do with the nominations! Reconstructed or not, Gdansk was not included on the list because of the terrible state of the Wisloujscie fortress. That is why it was not admitted in 2001 (and why the city hasn't applied to a place on the list since).

Czestochowa was also rejected - it's surroundings appearently were not impressive enough, even though the monument itself is very important in Polish and Catholic culture.

I got my information from an board on the net about Gdansk - from what I remember, it was from the official site of the city. Furthermore, I e-mailed the city and they e-mailed me back (about a year later!) and stated that the city is putting together a new application for 2004 - 2005.

I made this photos few days ago. Wisloujscie fortress really need heavy renovation. It is ours most valuable object and it is in the worst condition but the location of this fortress is very unlucky. It is surrounded by industry. It is cause of majority destruction, especially traffic in a harbors and shipyards.
