San Ignacio is a town in western Belize that serves as the capital of Cayo District.
The population is largely Mestizo and Kriol, with some Lebanese and Mopan. San Ignacio also boasts a fairly large Chinese population, most of whom emigrated from Guangzhou in waves in the mid-20th century. A sizable Mennonite community resides near San Ignacio. According to the 2000 census, the combined population was 16,400 people.

Yeah, it's kinda weird the capital of a country is not even the 2nd bigest one but it does not only happen in Belize, the same happens in Canada, Brazil, United States or Kazahstan.

Preciosas fotos. Me recuerdo cuando visité San Ignacio en 1995 y crucé el puente hacia Santa Helena. Fue un hermoso paseo, San Ignacio es una ciudad pequeña, pero muy bella y con gusto iria a visitarla nuevamente. Lo único que me decepcionó del viaje fue que la carretera del lado beliceño estaba asfaltada y la del lado guatemalteco era un polvazón enorme. Me dieron ganas de taparme la cara de la verguenza. Ojalá ahora esté mejor.:bash: Estas caritas son para el gobierno de Guatemala que no se preocupa por nuestras carreteras, especialmente el janano de Colom.

Hola tillor87. No se si estabas haciendo la pregunta a mi o a otro forista, pero en caso que fuera a mi persona, pues te dire que me paso algo curioso. Tome un taxi de la frontera a San Ignacio y cuando quise tomar fotos, me di cuenta que habia dejado la camara en el taxi. :ohno: :wallbash:Por eso este foro me ha dado la oportunidad, aunque con fotos ajenas, de poder recordar y mostrarle a mi esposa por donde estuve paseando 3 años de conocerla.

huy, parece un poblado de la costa norte de honduras, claro ahora bien, tiene su toque, ese Scotiabak ahi en medio de la nada..jejeje, en honduras habría al menos un poco más de planificación urbana, se nota que en belice hay poco planeamiento urbano, ahora bien es un pais chico con poca población...tiene un poco más que el territorio salvadoreño pero menos la mitad de nuestra población...

O sea, ni la mitad ni nada cerca a eso. La población de Belice es de 320 mil personas. Un beliceño me dijo que en Belice sólo hay 1 ciudad (Ciudad de Belice), la capital (Belmopán) y el resto son sólo pueblos o aldeas.

se ve menos gente de raza negra en ese lugar...parece mas un poblado de Guatemala....hasta creo que se habla mas español que ingles ahi.

Asi es en efecto. La mayoria de la poblacion es mestiza y habla español. Cuando visité San Ignacio pensé que las personas con las que hablaba eran guatemaltecas, pero eran beliceñas y hablaban perfecto español.:speech:

really nice town... im assuming that it serves as a strategic point for tourists coming from belize to tikal, guatemala. el puente de cable me fascino bastante, aqui encontre un poco de info sobre el:

"Hawkesworth Bridge spans the macal river and bridges the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena. Built in 1949 the Hawkesworth Bridge is the Oldest suspension bridge in Belize.

Having only one lane for cars and another for pedestrians, in earlier days this was the sight of numerous stand offs as motorist approaching the bridge from opposite direction would race towards the middle of the bridge. The unwritten rule was that whoever got to the middle of the bridge first had the right of way. Of course too many times both motorist would arrive at the same time and a stand off would occur. And too often times neither driver would yield until the police were called."

Secundo tu comentario Eder. Tuve la oportunidad de ir a comer a uno de los restaurates chinos que hay en San Ignacio. Recuerdo que el chino que lo atendia dijo que la cuenta era "dala nico" que era un dolar con cinco centavos. Creo que eso costaba la Coca Cola. Fue hace 14 años en 1995.

Interesting, San Ignacio looks really clean and organized. I love the vibe of the town, it has a lot going for it since it's near the border :)

How interesting! I always thought that Belize's second city was either Belmopan or Belize City
What I really like about Belize is that it is so unspoiled, just miles and miles of white sand beaches with no crowds in sight.
