About Herning:

Herning (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herning_Municipality) is a town in in the middle of Jutland, Denmark. The municipality has ~85.000 inhabitans and ~46.000 lives within the city limits. Around 1,5-1,7 million people are able to reach Herning within a driving distance of 100 km, that includes people in Århus, Horsens, Vejle, Kolding, Esbjerg, Holstebro, Viborg, Silkeborg and others.

About MCH:

MCH is the holding company for Messecenter Herning, Herning Kongrescenter and MCH Arena football stadium (previously SAS Arena). The ~50 year old messecenter is among the largest in northern Europe with an exhibition area of some ~100.000 sqm in 14 different halls. The annual number of visitors are around 900.000 for the three venues. Beside exhibitions, MCH also arrange concerts and events, this year their biggest concerts are with Bruce Springsteen, Coldplay, Beyonce and Jean Michel Jarre. Currently they can arrange indoor concerts for up to 10.000, but that will change with this new arena. Outdoor concerts up to 50.000, like with Springsteen this comming summer.

About the new arena:

This new arena is the latest addition to the ever expanding MCH. Until now only very few details have been announced for the arena, but it seems it will have a capacity of some 12.000/12.500 for sport and around 15.000 for concerts. I've seen that all/most of the "stands" will be telescopic so it will be extremely flexible. This should ensure that it can be used for other things than sport and concerts, such as trade fairs.

No renderings have been published yet so it's very hard to know exactly what we'll get. The sections plans however shows that there'll be around 20 rows of seats in the first tier, "sevice ring" with suites and restaurants, and then a second tier on 3 of the sides.

I'm guessing it will have some similarities with the UC La Grande Salle (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpost.php?p=33750420&postcount=728) in Montpellier. Atleast there's a lot of similar things like size, constructions time, capacity and so on. I hope we'll see some renderings soon.

With this new arena and the coming arena in Copenhagen (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=805522) Denmark will finally be able to host things like the icehockey world championships and mens handball world championships. This hasn't been possible until now because of the lack of arenas.

Steel provider: J. Langkjær Stålbyg A/S (http://www.staalbyg.dk/)
Facade contractor: Pro Montage A/S (http://www.pro-montage.dk/)
Facade supplier: ThyssenKrupp (http://www.thyssenkrupp-byg.dk/)
Concrete elements: A/S Midtjydsk Betonvare og elementfabrik (http://www.mbeas.dk/)

Possible future tenants:

None of the below teams/clubs are moving in now, at the moment they're simply too small. Some big games could be moved to the arena though.

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/mcharena/logobluefox.jpg (http://www.bluefox.dk/)

Herning Bluefox is the most winning Danish icehockey team with 14 championships (11 of those since 1991). They currently play in the Kvik Hockey Arena with a capacity of ~4000 in the other end of town.

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/mcharena/logohcm.jpg (http://www.hcmidtjylland.dk/)

HC Midtjylland is a relatively new Danish mens handball team formed with a merger a few years ago. They're currently in the top of the second best Danish league still with chances of moving up for next season. They'll probably soon merge again with nearby towns team Ikast. Currently HCM plays in different smaller arenas in the area, but none of them have capacities of more than ~800. There's surely interest in mens handball in Herning though, latest shown in a game between HCM (2. place) and the team on the 1. place in the second best league. The game was played in the Messecenter with an attandance of ~3800 which is season best in Denmark for a club game <-- Pretty good considdering the game was between two teams from the second best league. Within a few years HC Mistjylland might also and up as a part of:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/mcharena/logofcm.jpg (http://www.fcm.dk/)

FC Midtjylland is a football team which plays in the best Danish league. It was formed in a merger in 1999, and they have come on 2nd in the last two season. Currenly they're in the 4th spot in the league. They're playing at the football stadium next to this new arena, MCH Arena. FCM also has a womens handball team currently playing in the nearby town of Ikast. Ikast/FCM has been in the top 5 of the Dansih womens handball league in the last 10 years or so atleast, but with only one championship. I doubt they'll move to the new arena, since the one they use in Ikast seems to be fine for them. Maybe they'll move some of their biggest games to the new arena.

First major event:

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/mcharena/logohandboldem.jpg (http://www.ehf-euro.com/den-nor2010)

This new arena will host one main round, both semifinals and the final of the Womens 2010 European Handball Championship. It will take place from 7th to 19th of december 2010. The championsip is co-hosted between Denmark and Norway with Aalborg, Århus, Lillehammer and Larvik as the other venues.

Future expansion:

Already now they're planning stage 2 which will be next to the arena. It'll include a new entrance area, lots of commercial space, hotel and other facilities. No timeframe on this for now. Some early illustrations has been published in a report:

Sadly it seems "just" to be a new exhibition building - with the added capacity of hosting sporting venues usinge mobile seats :ohno:

mlm
April 15th, 2009, 12:28 AM
^^ There's no doubt that it won't be something like O2 Berlin or other of the new big european arenas, something like that is of course not possible with such a relatively low budget. They say that it will be something "completely different" from their normal exhibition halls though. As far as I understand the seats will also always be there, just movable, as in they can be "collapsed" into the wall or something but we'll see how it ends up.

I think this is a good solution, it's either this or nothing, since there's no way a 100+ million € arena would be sound here. Atleast this (together with the planned "real" one in Copenhagen) will give Denmark the possibility of hosting some larger events that wouldn't be possible otherwise, such as icehockey or handball world cup.

Well I had asumed that both PARKEN's planed arena, and this one, would be way to big for Handball, but last week FCK and Aab handball met in Gigantium with an audience of 5600...Okay, so it was 2 top team, a bit of a one-off event and probably helped by a lot of local patriotism and a lot of free tickets...But it still proves that it can work...Still, I am looking forward to seeing this...

Well... it's easy to be pessimistic... and say there will never be 12.500 spectators for a handball-match in Denmark.

Reason... Denmark never had the facilities to sell more tickets than 5.500 for a hanball-event. However... during the last 7 years between 30-50 matches have been with more than 4.000 spectators. Most in Aalborg DH, but also European Finals have been sold out when Slagelse, Viborg or Ikast have been in MCH, Aarhus, Brøndby. Even back when matches in the Danish league between Viborg and Ikast was moved to MCH... there would be more than 4.000 spectators.

So... the pessimistic would say... if there only was 4.000 spectators (in a hall with 4.000 seats)... how come there will ever be sold out in an Arena with 12.500 seats ???

The same goes with FCK... average attendance around 700-900 (in an arena with 1100 seats). However you should not forget it means 68 % of all seats are gone... the rest... 200-300 could easily be sponsors not showing up.
68 % of 4.500 in the new Caprinordic Arena: 3.068 spectators... which I find very realistic for FCK to reach with the new arena...

Thereby also said... that I'm one of the few optimistic people. I'm sure most of the matches at EURO 2010 will be sold out. It means 12.500 spectators for all the matches with Denmark.

My theory: If Ikast and Viborg should meet in Ikast Arena there would be 1.500 - 1.700 spectators. If the match was moves to MCH hal M or the round one... there would be 3.200 - 4.500 spectators. The more the merrier... the bigger the better!!

:-)

BTW: AaB - FCK was not a one-off happening. AaB will play the whole "grundspil" in Gigantium Isarena... my guess optimistic guess would say they hit over 5.000 spectators for all 4 homematches :-)

HC Midtjylland has also moved their 3 qualification games (from 1 div to league) to MCH and the round hall. There''ll be room for ~3800 like there was when they met Lemivg during the regular season. Pretty well for a 1. div team with a normal attandance of ~500 (full capacity). I doubt all 3 games will be sold out though, that'll depend on the results...

^^Nothing has been decided yet, or atleast nothing has been announced. But I have heard that Herning Kommune has a wish to gather football, handball and icehockey at MCH, so maybe it will happen in the future. There's of course some financial things that would have to be solved since it can't be that cheap to play in this new arena. On the other hand, it would be good for the arena to have some regular tenants.

I guess we'll be a lot wiser in around a year when the arena is to open soon. :)

^^ Yeah but I haven't really been able to get any new photos since the area has been "fenced in" because of last wednesdays Bruce Springsteen concert which was right next to the construction site. Maybe I can make a little photo update before I leave for Barcelona the coming wednesday.

They have now added 7 out of 10 of the huge roof rafters, so not long to go with that. Facade work has also started this week, until now they have only added a ~3 m high concrete facade at ground level, but there seems to be a bunch of facade elements at the site, so we'll probably soon see how it'll look. The last few days they have also started installing some huge boxes which must be the cooling system.

Photos hopefully coming in the next few days. :)

^^ Big or small is relative I guess. Compared to Mount Everest it is surely, compared to the neighboring MCH Arena (formar SAS Arena) it looks really big to me (see first photo).

When looking at just the arena I think the inside looks very big, while the "walls" surrounding the middle look a bit small. They still need a lot of floors and walls in the end with the main entrance though, so hard to judge yet.

And here the facade on the opposite side. It's a bit hard to judge here, since the sun is directly behind it, but it's pretty dark with different shades of gray. There'll most likely be windows in the empty "holes":

No offense to you guys, but what will this arena be used for? (Football, American Football, Basketball, Hockey)

mlm
July 24th, 2009, 01:39 PM
^^ To be honest no one really knows yet, except maybe MCH who's building it. It is being build to fit all kind of indoor sports, concerts and events.

The only known event so far is the womens handball EURO 2010, where the final rounds will be in this arena (in december 2010).

I think the idea is to move both the local icehockey and handball teams to the arena in the future, but not sure when/if that will happen.

NMAISTER007
July 24th, 2009, 03:08 PM
^^ Well even though this arena will host different types of sports, I guess they will have to have a lot of reconstructions.

mlm
July 24th, 2009, 03:38 PM
^^ Shouldn't be necessary, as far as I understand the entire lower bowl (8000/8500 seats) will heve "telescopic tribunes" meaning it is very easy to fit to whatever is needed. That's also the reason it's called a "Multipurpose Arena" (or just Multiarena). These telescopic tribunes are quite anvanced today, some for example "collapse" with just a push on a button. (Check out this company (http://www.audiencesystems.com/) for example)

It should also be possible to change between the different types of uses easy, that is already much used in many other arenas in the world. I was at a guided tour in Madison Square Garden back in 2001, and the guide told me they sometimes had 3 event on 1 day. Something like a circus in the morning, an icehockey game in the afternoon and a basket game in the evening. This scenario will most likely never be a possibility here anyway, but just changing from day to day should be no problem.

Btw, I've heard the will present the plans to the public in the fall, guess we'll know a lot more then.

A few snaps from today. The work with the steelframe is now soon completed, they'll be done during september. Yesterday they started on the eastern facade, which was the last one without the steel structure. On the northside they're installing the facade now, think they're a little less than halfway on that facade. It's a bit hard to follow though, since the entire northern side isn't accessible. They're also working fast with the roof, I would say about 50 % is covered now.

It's a bit hard to get good photos right now, both because there's a lot of construction stuff placed outside the arena, and because 3/4 sides are being closed off because of a Coldplay concert next weekend (next to the arena).

Time for another update. First, the photos are quite gray and "wet", since it was raining a lot just before I took them. I'll try to show more details than normal, in the ways it is possible. It's getting harder and harder to see what happens "inside" as they're closing the facade, but here we go:

Southern facade is rising fast now:

Detailed look:

The entire south facade:

Moving to the western end (the highest), first a overview:

Stairs:

And a closer look at the roof:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/mcharena/2009-08-29-06.jpg

Now the the eastern end, here you can still see a bit inside:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/mcharena/2009-08-29-07.jpg

The have started adding the "skybridges" in the roof:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/mcharena/2009-08-29-08.jpg

And a look inside, towards the westend. Concrete elements are now at 4th level:
http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/mcharena/2009-08-29-09.jpg

Finally from the east towards the northside, where you can see a row of skyboxes:

That's it for now...

They had topping out ceremony last monday, since the steelframe is now completed.

The facade is probably covering about half of the arena now, wont take long until it is entirely covered. That'll mean one year of "unknown" construction inside. :/

mlm
October 3rd, 2009, 07:35 PM
^^ Nope, no presentation. They held topping out ceremony in the middle of September, but no renderings has been released. :/

The architect, Aarstiderne Arkitekter, had a little exhibition on november 1st, where they showed some of their projects, among these the original plans for this arena. You can see a rendering of that by going here (http://www.aarstiderne.dk/nyheder?) and click "Invitation (PDF)" in the lower right corner. Unfortunately it was only this old version of the arena they showed. The exteriour looks cool, but inside it wasn't that cool. It was really big, I think they could fit a soccer field inside it. Good thing they chose to build a "normal" sized arena IMO, altough the facade is a bit more boring.

The only visible new on the construction site is the facade works, which progress fine. I think the facade will be completely covered in a 2-3 weeks. hope I'll be able to take a few photos soon, there's just so much rain at the moment.

^^ I don't know yet, a lot of different figures has been mentioned. For handball it should be somewhere between 12.000 and 12.500, depending on how many rows of chairs they use on the ground. If you feel like counting you can do it HERE (http://www.billetnet.dk/EHF+EURO+2010-billetter/event/MUA1912S), that's the ticket sales for the womens euro handball final on december 19th. :D

The upper section has 3553 seats, and then there's also a few hundred in the VIP boxes which you don't see on the ticket page.

There're two handball games on november 6th, I guess we'll know more after that, it's more or less sold out.

Why did they build such a big arena in a small city like Herning? It's not even among top 15, is it? That means many people have to travel a long way to get there. It's a very nice arena though :)

Looking forward to see Norway play the handball final there soon ;)

mlm
December 7th, 2010, 11:28 PM
^^ Because they're crazy. :D ...and since it's privately funded (mostly) the state hasn't decided where it should be build.

Herning is the 12th largest Danish city, but yes, unusually small for such a big arena. No matter where it had been build in western Denmark many people would have to drive to reach it though, and Herning is afterall pretty much in the middle of Jutland, so it could be worse. And the distances are still very small compared to Norway of course, most of the ~ 2.5 million in Jutland can reach it within 2 hours by car and some ~1,7 million lives within 100 km.

I have no interest in handball, but it would be cool to see a Denmark - Norway final. I doubt Denmark will get that far though.

Hey everyone. I just read about the MCH Messecenter on Wikipedia.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Messecenter_Herning

According to this Wikipedia article, the MCH complex has two separate arenas- other than Jyske Bank Boxen. One of them is the 11,800-capacity MCH Arena Herning, which is an outdoor stadium that was once known as the SAS Arena.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MCH_Arena

The Wikipedia article on the MCH Messecenter also mentions that the complex contains an "MCH Outdoor Arena", which acts as a 50,000-capacity concert venue. I believe Coldplay performed at this outdoor venue on their last tour.

I can't find a separate Wikipedia article on this "MCH Outdoor Arena". I also can't find any pictures of it on the internet.

Does such an "MCH Outdoor Arena" actually exist? How does it compare to the SAS Arena?

Is this "MCH Outdoor Arena" an actual tiered stadium like Parken?

What does this concert venue actually look like?

Can anyone from Denmark tell me?:?

mlm
December 23rd, 2010, 03:28 PM
^^ I can understand why you're confused because of all their "arena" names. MCH Outdoor Arena is not an actual arena, it's just a big parking space where they had some big concerts (Springsteen & Coldplay) last year, so the name is pretty misleading. To make it even more confusing, before that they called another "empty" area MCH Concert Arena, but that ain't an real arena either. I doubt they'll use the MCH Concert Arena much more after this "real" arena has been build.

Here's an overview of MCH's different venues:

MCH Arena (former SAS Arena) - Football stadium with a capacity of ~11,800
Jyske Bank BOXEN (former MCH Multiarena) - Indoor arena with a capacity of 12.000-15.000.
MCH Herning Messecenter - The 110.000 sqm exhibition center.
MCH Outdoor Arena - Parking space in front of the football stadium and BOXEN.
MCH Concert Arena - Parking space/outdoor fair ground behind the exhibition center.

Beside these, they also have 2 other venues in north and central Herning:

MCH Herning Kongrescenter - Congresscenter in central Herning
Sportscenter Herning - 16.000 sqm sport facilites in northern Herning, for locals mostly.

And finally the overview on a photo of mine from 2006 (before Jyske Bank BOXEN was build):

http://www.mikaellykmadsen.dk/skyscrapercity/messeomraadet.jpg

EDIT: Btw, you can see a photo of this "outdoor arena" at the MCH website, I belive it's during the Coldplay concert. Go HERE (http://www.mch.dk/MCH/MCH/Faciliteter/Jyske-Bank-BOXEN.aspx) and find the photo in the lower left corner.
