spud December 27th, 2006, 12:06 PM it's all well and good having massive new stadia being built, but what about the small ones??? i'm talking anout stadiums with a capacity under 20,000

there are not really beautiful small stadiums here :( most of the smaller ones are old and round and with track lines
mlm December 27th, 2006, 03:32 PM I quite like our little stadium here in Herning, DK. A bit ordinary, but still nice. It's called SAS Arena, and it has a capacity of just 11.809 (7.409 seats), but that's okay for a town this size. It's was built in 2003-2004 and the price was some 11,5 million €. A few of my photos:

patroeski December 28th, 2006, 01:42 AM It's not built yet but the new Artevelde stadium of KAA Gent (Belgium) will be a beauty. It will have a capacity of 20000 seats and it will be finished at the end of 2007.

Well as you can see on the rendering it will be mosty glass and stainless stell for the exterior. the zones behind the goalpost will be a mix of suites and general admission seatings. The stadium is also a nice piece of engineering with a very severe rule book it will be sureleavated from the ground with railways going below a bit like in Monaco.
I've been to the site many times and I can assure you the view is going to be breathtaking. It's going to be a very nice place to be even if you're not a soccer fan.
patroeski December 28th, 2006, 03:44 PM Correct me if I'm wrong but is this thread called "the ugliest football stadium in the world"
http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b28/bennie_s/PC220181.jpg
Quintana December 28th, 2006, 04:20 PM ^^ I agree that it's an awful stand (the other two look a lot better, the stadium has only 3 stands). However, it still beats 90% of the Belgian stadiums including some that are a lot bigger.
Martuh December 28th, 2006, 04:29 PM Dear fellow Dutch forumers. It is not the idea to simply put all the small stadiums in your country here. Just the small, beautiful ones. Not simple concrete things like MVV or F.Sittard stadiums.
I'll add some:

patroeski December 28th, 2006, 06:09 PM I realy think there are a lot of nice dutch stadiums, but why are there so many with stands that doesn't reach the pitch. It looks ugly and it's impossible to be close to the action. Why don't finish the stands. The stadiums would be much more sociable and beautiful.
For example:

Zaro December 29th, 2006, 01:40 PM Quite a few people note the title - the best small football stadiums. So, please, do not post all of them in a post, but try to stick to the best ones only.
To me, smaller grounds have much more atmosphere. They are not so commercial as the new giants, which look like malls where, occasionally, there could be some football played.
I personally like the Dutch ones - neat and having character. The new ground lack character, they're so similar.

ØlandDK December 30th, 2006, 01:30 PM I quite like our little stadium here in Herning, DK. A bit ordinary, but still nice. It's called SAS Arena, and it has a capacity of just 11.809 (7.409 seats), but that's okay for a town this size. It's was built in 2003-2004 and the price was some 11,5 million €. A few of my photos:

Bit if I'm honest, Monaco's Stade Louis II is probably still the best sub-20,000 stadium that I know of, even with the athletics track:

At that point I had a bit of a soft spot for Millwall (took them to 2nd in the Premiership too). I've grown out of it now though, and hate them like the rest of the world. I always thought that something like The Den is what the IFA should have tried / be trying to do with Windsor Park. It's a simple design, doesn't require a lot of space and is about the right capacity.
I've always liked The Den for some reason. Just seems devoid of the superfluity of many other stadia, while still looking reasonably modern.
SouthBank January 3rd, 2007, 05:38 PM I remember Danny Baker complaining once that the New Den had started to fall apart after 3 or 4 years because the builders had used cheap materials... Is that true?

Well I've been going to the ground since it opened in '93 and it did go through a dodgy patch after about 5 years because the club seemed to assume that as it was new they didn't need to spend any money on maintainance... luckily this is no longer the case, and the ground is arguably looking largely better than when it opened, with less exposed breeze blocks and a bit more soul..
The stadium was also designed to have the corners filled in without the need to demolish anything else, as well as for the West stand being built strong enough to handle a third tier if needed, though with our current form this seems unlikely for now..
Glad you no longer have a soft spot for Millwall - wouldn't sit well with our 'no-one likes us' mentality! This happened when we played Man Utd in the FA Cup final a few years ago and everyone wanted Millwall to win - felt so wrong!
I always thought that something like The Den is what the IFA should have tried / be trying to do with Windsor Park. It's a simple design, doesn't require a lot of space and is about the right capacity.
Agreed - from what I remember one of Windsor Park's stands looks remarkably similar to those at The Den anyway, so it would have worked well. Are there any plans to mirror the 2 newer stands on the other sides of the ground for a bit of uniformity?
Benjuk January 4th, 2007, 01:30 AM Glad you no longer have a soft spot for Millwall - wouldn't sit well with our 'no-one likes us' mentality!
I still think that the "no one likes us, we don't care, we are Millwall..." etc., is the best football chant to come out of the South of England.
NeilF January 4th, 2007, 04:15 PM Agreed - from what I remember one of Windsor Park's stands looks remarkably similar to those at The Den anyway, so it would have worked well. Are there any plans to mirror the 2 newer stands on the other sides of the ground for a bit of uniformity?
The North Stand at Windsor Park is almost a replica of the stands at The Den and the new Alex Russel stand is very similiar, only it is a one tier stand, with an upper and lower section divided by a wall, rather than by a tier split.
The IFA is current discussing two main options for the future of international football in Northern Ireland, niether of which involve Windsor Park;
The first is the proposed stadium at the Maze, but with a proposed capacity of 42,000 and with a lower deck with filled corners, it seems utterly useless as a national stadium for the IFA - capacity is too large and segregation, due to the problems in Northern Irish football, would be incredibly difficult.
The other more logical option is another proposed stadium in the Ormeau Park, just across the river from central Belfast - with a proposed capacity of between 20,000 and 25,000 and four main stands, this seems a much more realistic prospect and would like bring Ulster Rugby on board, as they are slowly outgrowing the limitations of their ground, Ravenhill, which only has a capacity of 12,500, but routinely has much greater demand for tickets.
However, given the fact that The Maze stadium seems to be floundering and losing considerable support, especially given a recent comparative study between it and other white elephants (mostly, Del Alpi), and the relative uncertainty about whether or not the Belfast City stadium will go ahead, I think the IFA should be looking at replacing the two remaining stands at Winsdor, given increasingly stringent UEFA controls reducing the capacity all the time. With appropriate plans, this could easily be completed with no real drop (about 200 seats and no more) in capacity - with three developed ends, Windsor would have a capacity of about 17,000 (as opposed to 14,000 now) allowing the south stand to be demolished and corporate hospitality built into it.

SouthBank January 4th, 2007, 04:25 PM ^^ ^^ ^^
Seems to make sense that rugby and football share a ground in Northern Ireland seeing as they both seem to need it as much as each other - great opportunity.
Hadn't considered the segregation issue in NI in relation to stadium design - shame that it has to be like that, but I suppose it's only similar to what most teams face in league football around the world, just worse. To use The Den as an example since it's been discussed here; one of the main reasons it was made four seperate stands rather than a single bowl was due to the fact that Millwall has that well-publicised hooligan element that don't seem to take too well to sitting or even walking alongside their opposite numbers...
NeilF January 4th, 2007, 04:34 PM It certainly makes more sense than the Maze development; the one big beef is that the city council are proposing a dog track around the pitch - but there are rumours of retractable stands at each end (the main reason for 4 seperate stands on the bottom tiers) to compensate for this. For all three sports proposed to be played at the Maze, the City of Belfast is a better option - it allowed the GAA to expand the facilities and increase profits from Casement Park and it would enable Ulster Rugby and Northern Ireland to play in front of larger crowds, as per demand, when expansion of their own homes is difficult or impossible.

I've been reading a great book called 'Heartfelt' about a Hibs fan who decides to see if he can become a hearts fan for a year. His descriptions of the Tynecastle atmosphere are what made me think of it for the best small stadium thread. He also did a bit of research about the Archibald Leith stand, saying that its not a classic by his mighty standards as he was too busy building Goodison at the time.

Benjuk January 8th, 2007, 03:30 AM Leitch was a legend - surely one of the busiest stadium architects of all time - designed part or all of over 20 major stadiums, including:
Ibrox, Glasgow
Anfield, Liverpool
Celtic Park, Glasgow
Craven Cottage, London
The Den, London
The Dell, Southampton
Fratton Park, Portsmouth
Goodison Park, Liverpool
Hampden Park, Glasgow
Highbury, London
Hillsborough Stadium, Sheffield
Leeds Road, Huddersfield
Maine Road, Manchester
Molineux,Wolverhampton
Old Trafford, Manchester
Roker Park, Sunderland
Selhurst Park, London
Stamford Bridge, London
Tynecastle Stadium, Edinburgh
Villa Park, Birmingham
White Hart Lane, London
Any club that covers up his old lattice work with advertising (as my beloved Sunderland did for years at Roker Park) deserves a good hard kick in the teeth.

NeilF January 8th, 2007, 01:33 PM I hope that blue roof portion has some sort of exhibition/convention space beneath it...otherwise its a complete waste of material
The original plan was to use the blue area as a means of segregating fans leaving the ground - as mentioned before, Northern Irish football, especially domestically, has certain problems and fans need to be divided. Initially, I think it was a lavish way of doing that, rather than the usual metal cages around grounds in Belfast.
I'm not sure what it's current usage or purpose is planned to be, but apparently, the city council weren't too pleased about building such an OTT segregation device outside of the ground.

Rostock, dear Erbsenzähler, is a tricky cheat. Yes, it has 20.000 seats (21.000 to be precise), but in addition some 8.000 standing places, what makes it unsuitable to our ranking. Good try anyway!
Next to it: The old stadium
http://virtualglobetrotting.com/thumb/2/2/22595.gif
What is not correct, the old stadium was replaced by the new one (that's why the flood light could be used again). The football ground with the athletic tracks is just a training site.

Bit if I'm honest, Monaco's Stade Louis II is probably still the best sub-20,000 stadium that I know of, even with the athletics track:

No one like us we don't care, we are Millwall, super Millwall, we are Millwall from the DEN
I like the New Den,but I loved the (old) DEN!
I like the Louis II,but I hate the athletic rings in a football stadium

BobDaBuilder February 15th, 2007, 02:21 PM Love Monaco, walked around that little seaside township a few years back and was stunned to stumble across the football stadium on the western flank of the pink palace. Interestingly the whole town/nation is probably smaller than my suburb here in Oz. Very sleepy place.
Anyway the stadium has an indoor swimming pool up the eastern end of the ground, gym etc.. A real "community" ediface for the millionaires who lurk in the principality. "A sunny place for shady people." is an old description of the town.
Also love the "boats" that are penned in the little marinas there. More like frigates or destroyers to us mere peasants.

Thats one of the coolest uses of an existing building into a new stadium I've ever seen.
isaidso March 31st, 2009, 12:12 AM Varsity Stadium, home of the University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team, founded in 1877.
Football's roots are only a stone's throw away from here. The first documented gridiron football match was played at University College, University of Toronto in 1861. The original Varsity Stadium was built in 1898. It was renovated in 1924 and again in 1950 when it reached its peak capacity of 20,000. It was a classic 'U' shaped college football stadium, but it was demolished to build this new structure in 2007. The new structure seats 5,000. The redevelopment greatly enhances the quality and scope of athletics facilities at Varsity due to the inclusion of an athletics track. Varsity looks great today, but sometimes I wonder if the destruction of Canada's sporting heritage was too great a price to pay.

Vace June 29th, 2009, 04:00 PM Looks like a bit more than few months to me my friend...
Oh no, they have to finish it in few months due to terms of the contract. Btw, the stadium is in reconstruction, only this tribune is new, others are old.
The first phase should be done until the end of september. And the whole project (first and second phase) untill the end of this year.
glenntoy15 June 30th, 2009, 07:45 AM The North Stand at Windsor Park is almost a replica of the stands at The Den and the new Alex Russel stand is very similiar, only it is a one tier stand, with an upper and lower section divided by a wall, rather than by a tier split.
The IFA is current discussing two main options for the future of international football in Northern Ireland, niether of which involve Windsor Park;
Stadium at Ormeau Park

If the 20,000 capacity option is followed, the Ormeau Stadium would surely have to be added to the best small stadia in the world.
this design has the same design with the new stadium in taiwan. it will be used in the world games

That's because nobody wants to sit in the corners. the tier rises and falls depending on the demand for seats.

seaphorm May 13th, 2010, 09:57 AM yes i'm slightly patriotic... but i think there's been one too many football stadiums in here...
i have a soft spot for wellington's basin reserve (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basin_reserve)... with a capacity of 11,000... grassy banks... well within walking distance of a couple of excellent alcohol stores if you dont like stadium prices... (remember test cricket goes on all day for 5 days) has hosted test cricket for more than 80 years. this is a classic cricket ground in the old english county sense.
cricket grounds tend to grow organically over decades... given the nature of the game which until recently was played at a sedate pace over days on end, many of the best stadiums are designed as places to take the family for a picnic as much as for watching the sport itself. of course this is changing - and 20 twenty cricket has turned the sport into a 3 hour bash for cash... and new cricket arenas are purpose built and cater to huge crowds (see the MCG or eden gardens).. but the classic grounds have their own charm which can't be matched by the bigger stadiums.
on those rare wellington days where it gets into the high 20s... you dont want to be anywhere else but sitting on the grass bank, watching new zealand lose to any of the host of better teams around.. drinking your sorrows away while cheering at that rare breed of streaker who clears security.. and the field.. and runs up the road...

I'm not certain, but I think you may be referring to Dartford F.C. A Non-league team who have just recently been promoted to the Conference south (6th tier) of the English Football pyramid. It got voted the best design for a new ground the year it was built or something.

morpheus2410 August 19th, 2010, 07:30 AM Really nice looking stadium!
It's perfect by my standards and especially by Croatian standards as we lack nice little stadiums like this one.
This stadium is only a part of a larger project which is going to include an indoor olympic size pool with smaller pools, tennis courts (indoor court with 1100 seats and outdoor courts)
Here is are some renders of the compound:

You get the impression that if the MLS ever wanted to expand into Nebraska (not that it's a massively obvious market for the sport) they could easily expand that stadium with little to no hassle.
chrisbramley85 November 4th, 2010, 05:53 PM going to have to add dulwich hamlet fc, Champion Hill Stadium to this list.

i love the creeping ivy on the perimeter wall behind the goal!!
3,000 capacity (500 seating), their record attendance is 1835 (v Southport -1999)
for those who dont know, Dulwich Hamlet are possibly the most successful amateur football team in Britain.
the stadium was built in 1993 to celebrate the clubs centenary. its made from limestone (i think... looks like limestone anyway...) and has a nice steel fence around the pitch, and the few times ive been there ive noticed how clean the ground is. definately a very pretty, very small stadium

lwa January 10th, 2011, 07:59 PM Tynecastle (top of this page) is probably my favourite, but no point posting that again - and their Edinburgh Rivals also have a cracking ground at Easter Road (although that is 400 seats over the limit here, and there are no decent pics since the 'finished' the redevelopment earlier this season)
So instead I shall post a few gems from the french Top 14:
Stade Aime Giral, Perpignan (approx 17,500)

Stade Yves du Manoir, Montpellier (approx 13,000 - not to be confused with Racing Metro's ground of the same name)

2009. the old west stand was torn down and the construction of the new modern stand started.
Today, the stadium is finished and looks like this
