Martin air B767-3ER is departing from Colombo International.
Date of the video is December 2007.
Sidekicker May 4th, 2009, 08:06 PM ^ I've been on that Martinair flight!! It was from Colombo to Male and then straight to Amsterdam! I wouldn't say they are the best airline but it was nice going to Male for the first time! :-)
Fusionist May 4th, 2009, 09:13 PM ^^ yes the landing and take off at Male is great, possibly one of the most scenic airports in the world !
phil.froelich May 5th, 2009, 03:08 PM Yeah, seeing all the small islands is simply unforgetable...
Lacs21 May 8th, 2009, 03:51 PM I hate stopping in Maldives because you have to stay on the flight while they clean it. but thats always the flights I get. Here are some pics.

FlyHighFly May 25th, 2009, 02:34 PM ^^ Cheers buddy for the photos above. Colombo airport is so clean and empty. :bash:
phil.froelich May 26th, 2009, 09:26 AM Empty??? I'm sure that will change over the next few months and there is still potential and the need to expand the terminal and improve services, no. of duty free shops etc. especially access to the Airport (Drop-off area etc.)

Pilotofthefuture July 2nd, 2009, 02:34 AM your welcome:). Yeah i took these myself last week on board an SQ 777-200. Wasn't able to take pictures inside the terminal cos they had signs with no taking photographs/videoing everywhere and i saw some Indian tourists get told by some air force guy to stop video recording so i was afraid to take out my camera in case it got confiscated or something.

saraprobe July 7th, 2009, 06:05 PM The public viewing gallery of the Bandaranaike International Airport is expected to be reopened next week, airport sources said yesterday.
The viewing gallery was closed in July 2001 July after the LTTE launched an attack on the airport.
Meanwhile the government had also decided to renovate a number of domestic airports including Ratmalana and Trincomalee and some in the Jaffna peninsula.
Civil Aviation Authority Director General Parakarama Dissanayake said talks had been held with the relevant authorities on the development of domestic airports though nothing has been finalized yet.
The government’s aviation policy which was revived this year gives priority to the development of domestic airports while it includes the integration of airports with other modes of transport such as rail and sea. Another distinct feature is the setting up of a domestic terminal in the BIA.
There are 11 domestic aerodromes in Sri Lanka which are used for military purposes while the Ratmalana airport is used for both military and civil purposes.

Sri Lankan airlines loses Rs10bn
Sri Lankan Airlines group has lost 9.99 billion rupees in the year to March 2009, down from a profit of 4.9 billion rupees a year earlier as revenue fell amid a global downturn and falling tourism arrivals at home.
The company lost 5.8 billion rupees in the first quarter as shortly after the government terminated a management agreement with Emirates Airlines.
Revenues fell 7.2 percent to 74.2 billion rupees.
"To compound matters, increased competition was experienced from subsidised airlines which dropped prices to fight for market share," chairman Nishantha Wickremasinghe told shareholders.
In the second quarter the airline had lost 4.3 billion rupees, and in the third quarter it lost 1.1 billion rupees, amid tight cost control and route trimming.
In the fourth quarter losses had risen to 2.6 billion rupees as a global slowdown began to bite.
Sri Lankan has kept flying by running down cash reserves acquired by re-financing aircraft in the previous year. Cash deposits of 6.8 billion rupees had been used up during the year.
Chief executive Manoj Gunawardena said an upturn in domestic tourism would give a lift to the airline in the current year though weak economic conditions in many developed nations were a dampener.
Sri Lankan Airlines group also has a catering subsidiary.
At stand alone company level, the firm has 9.3 billion rupees and its current liabilities were higher than current assets by 8.1 billion rupees. Net assets had fallen to 6.2 billion rupees from 15.5 billion rupees a year ago.
"These factors raise doubts that the Company will be able to continue as a going concern," the annual report said.
But revenue enhancement, new code-share partnerships, pricing, route re-structuring and cost management have made directors "confident of the Company’s ability to continue in operation for the foreseeable future," the report said.
Correction: Revenues fell 7.2 percent to 74.2 billion rupees.

For all 4 flights I took on KUL-CMB vv the loads were between 60-70% , and from what I heard the load has not even reached 80% yet, so I don't think they will start more flights soon. But the CEO of Air Asia already cited the possiblity of 5 daily flights in the near future.

banuthev February 3rd, 2010, 11:23 AM Sidekicker, Very nice to see you back in the Sri Lanka Forum. No doubt, this video taken by the same person (Anil). :)
Skyprince, SriLankan does use A330s and A340s to Trivandrum. It’s like Singapore Airlines used B747s in the KUL-SIN route on those days. But SriLankan is using only A320s to Trichy. Perhaps SriLankan will fly A330s and A340s to Trichy (TRZ) after TRZ expand the current runway. Currently TRZ runway has the maximum capability of handing Airbus A321.
Guys, please wait for more pictures. I am going to do the Plane spotting at London Heathrow Airport (LHR) on every Sunday morning. So I will post SriLankan’s pictures in this thread.
I missed to take pictures of the SriLankan A330. She was flying to London beginning January 2010. I hope she will back here at LHR.

tig February 14th, 2010, 04:02 AM Russian Military in Sri lanka ?
These Russian Air Crafts are here definitely for military purposes.
Logically what are the other reasons ? Why so much Russian air crafts at little time? in one pic u can see 3 Russian air crafts there?
If they are going to visit this far, they would have chose India more than Sri lanka ?
kflyer2 February 14th, 2010, 06:39 AM To my knowledge, these are not Russian military. They are commercial. One of the aircraft you talk about is the Il-86, which is of Aeroflot. However I've got no idea what is the S7 aircraft doing. May be not a photo taken at CMB ? The only other unidentified aircraft is a business jet. The An-12 is likely of Expo Aviation.
banuthev February 14th, 2010, 10:34 AM When I see that picture for the first time with a lot of Russian Birds, I really thought that the picture was taken somewhere in Russian Federation. lol. Now I am 100% sure these Russian Aircrafts are now in Colombo. You also see SriLankan's vehicles are parked next to those aircrafts.
These pictures were taken by the SSC Forumer: Asia-Bike. :cheers2:
Take a look at this picture (http://www.myaviation.net/search/photo_search.php?id=00122650&size=large). This was taken in 2004. You will see more Russian Birds were in parking. I assume Colombo [CMB] is being used as an Aircraft Bone-yard.

OK, This is Hercules C-130. But the aircraft nose is looking quite different to me, It makes me think if this is really a Hercules C-130. :)
With the purple, red, white and green shading in the aircraft tail, I would guess this airline should be MALEV Hungarian Airlines. It could be the VIP flight to Sri Lanka.

Why all they here ? I dont think they are crazy:P of Sri lanka lol

Fusionist February 19th, 2010, 05:46 PM Flew with UL this week, for the first time after the Emirated deal fell through. Personally I didn't find any changes with respect to standards. It is still equally efficient and reasonably friendly. BIA on the entrance side needs imense re-development though, it looked too old fashioned.

from London. On a personal note had some mixed luck in Sri Lanka and did feel a bit intimidated and picked upon at times but anyway life moves on. The guys in Colombo vary to the extremes, either too shy or simply rude and intrusive. But anyways I have my own issues andits not fair to judge people from my own perspective. So life moves on..
Back on topic, the return flight via Male was atleast half filled with Japanese & Hong Kong tourists visitting Maldives. Good to see UL transitting passengers from the far east via Colombo. Also there were many Indonesian travellers in the airport. Possibly on the transit from/to the Gulf I would think.

banuthev February 23rd, 2010, 10:24 AM @ Lordvader - Thanks for those helpful instructions.
@ Fusionist - It is interesting that you mentioned about transiting Indonesian pax at Colombo, because Indonesians are using Colombo as a transit hub to fly to Middle East and Europe. Even though Colombo does not have any direct flights to Jakarta. Emirates, Kuwait Airways and SriLankan are used to fly that route, but not any more.
How was the Load factor on that London to Colombo vv flights. I see more passengers flying to Sri Lanka from Canada, European Countries, USA... after end of war. Touch wood. So London Heathrow will be their 1st choise for the transit.
Recently I tried booking the London to Colombo vv flight on SriLankan. For my trip: May 2010. UL's Booking charge was £338 + £141tax. I found Kuwait Airways is cheaper than any other airline, which is £328 (incl tax). Oman Air is charging almost same as Kuwait Airways.

The London load factor on the return route was good. Almost full. But it was only 2/3rd full on the way from London to Colombo.
Also I think Sri Lankans from the US prefer to transit in mainland Europe ie. Italy, France or Germany rather than London Heathrow. Canadians however sometimes prefer London transit.
Yes, the gulf based airlines are a lto cheape rthan UL. I think Kuwait, Gulf or Saudi Arabian are the cheapest.

No worries, im willing to help anytime!
Im surprised UL doesnt fly to Jakarta anymore. Its a route which could consolidate CMB as a transit hub (along with other european routes).
banuthev February 24th, 2010, 10:19 AM @ Fusionist - I always fly on Gulfair when I fly to Chennai via Muscat or Bahrain. But Gulfair does not serve Colombo after the Terrorist attack at CMB. Now I booked with Kuwait Airways via Kuwait for £328/=. I will take Saudi Arabian next time. I really wanted to fly on their B747.

Its very kind of you. SriLankan has cancelled the Jakarta flights as of shortage of aircrafts, in Mid 2002 or 2003.

Sidekicker March 19th, 2010, 03:40 AM Emirates Boeing 777-300ER in CMB I didn't know they used the -300ER?? are the loads really that big?? lol

Cayman March 19th, 2010, 08:43 AM EK have been using the -300ER variant on DXB-CMB route for many years now. Some of these fly the trangular route DXB-SIN-CMB-DXB.
Except for a couple of flights a week (which are the newly introduced time slots) their flights have very good load factors in and out of Colombo.
On CMB route EK operates the Medium haul configuration of 77W, which features fully reclinable F seats but not the private suites which are offered onboard their ULH configured 77W.
Lovelanka March 19th, 2010, 01:23 PM Emirates is being a best choice for passengers flying from Australia to Sri Lanka.

Lovelanka March 19th, 2010, 01:32 PM Hi Banuthev, Where do you spot the planes in Heathrow? Its one of the busiest airport and around 6 A380s landing in oneday. loved to watch.
banuthev March 20th, 2010, 12:28 AM @ Cayman - When Emirates did fly the SIN-CMB triangular route .??. From my understanding Emirates flew the DXB-CMB-SIN-CGK vv and now it has changed to DXB-CMB-SIN vv.
@ Lovelanka - As far as I know, London (LHR) has only one Plane spotting point which is located in North Perimeter Road. But LHR does not have much viewing areas when compared to airports like Amsterdam (AMS), Frankfurt (FRA) ... as the facilities at LHR are very poor. Also spotting SriLankan at LHR is really difficult as SriLankan is mostly using runway (27L) which is far from the spotting point. Since SriLankan reduced the parking time at LHR to 1:20 or 1:30, SriLankan finds really convenient to land and take-off the aircraft in the runway (27L) which is close to Terminal 4.

Skyler March 24th, 2010, 08:33 PM Hello Dear,
I'm new to this .could you pls send some pictures of the Fly Dubai And Tiger Air lines that in BIA.Bcs they are new air lines that operate from Dubi and Singapoore. Thanx.
banuthev March 25th, 2010, 10:00 AM @ Sidekicker & Cayman - Emirates (EK) must have good loads in the DXB-CMB-SIN vv route. EK's B773ER has 427 or 442 seats (C & Y). Once again Cathay Pacific (CX) also operates Daily x Boeing B777-300ER to Colombo with seat capacity of 398 Seats (C-45 & Y -353).
@ Skyler - FlyDubai and Tiger Airways does not fly to Colombo (CMB). May be we will see them at CMB in the future.

banuthev March 25th, 2010, 04:22 PM @ Asia-Bike - Its my mistake Cathay is utilizing B777-300 not ERs to Colombo. CX's B777-300ERs are mostly covering the cities in North America. Reasonably CX's B777-300 version has more seats but missing the First Class unlike B777-300ER.
