View Full Version : Forum clashes - recent outbursts

So I think we are all aware of the recent clashes within the SA forums. Some justified, some not so much.

Just to clarify my stance, I am absolutely in no way against any province, city, state, legal boundary or segregated community. I Love all of SA, albeit some more than others (Joburg can really get on my nerves sometimes), and it would be foolish to think otherwise.

Just so I can back myself up before a mod has to step in, these are but a few comments and statements that I feel have brought some sections of the forum into disrepute:

Table mountain as backdrop = cool, mine dump as backdrop = not cool

Yes but it needs to be. Tourists arent going to take a drive on a train to Kings Park for the fun of it.

99% of the images of world cup stadia appearing on the net are of GP Stadium. I don't think we have tourist issues. The stadium is in South Africa's major tourist zone, yet it will still be a tourist attraction, even when its competing with hundreds of things around it.

i go through about 10 different image sources almost daily. GP stadium is the most photographed, clearly the most exposed, if not 99% then very close.

There is obviously a large history behind this, and from some of the comments of other forumites (mods included), i'm not alone:

thats a rather silly statement mo with no justification to be found on the net

...Even if this were true, it's not necessarily reflective of how visited the stadium will be during or after the WC. The. Greater number of pics is also due to a far more open access Approach by authorities and passionate residents who have free time on their hands, than an indication of how visited the stadium will be in the long run. Let's be frank: there is nothing to do at GP stadium itself so I can't see hoards of tourists from V+A making the trek there when there's nothing to do. When they reach there.

However, let's see what happens post-WC... Let's see the 99% of pics translate to 99% of all tourists to SA stadiums...

Give it a rest, Mo. You come on the Durban (and other) boards and always try and stir things. You're a student with seemingly lots of time on his hands. Not all of us have time to run around and take / post pics on a daily basis. I, for one, am hardly even in Durbs.

I also certainly don't have time for petty dick size competitions, which you seem to bait people and thrive on. That and your condescending "CT and/or Greenpoint is/are the greatest things on earth / in SA". You're infamous on these boards for that and it's getting tired. FYI, not all of us think CT is the centre of the universe. (Shock! Horror!) :ohno:

And yes, I am using these boards as a measure of the popularity of the stadiums. I am using an objectively verifiable source that pertains directly to the users / readers of these forums. It's interesting that you didn't respond to the issue I raised but conveniently side-stepped the issue and laid out another "bait" (2% argument) intended to distract from the issue at hand. I'm not falling for that. Please take your CT and GP worshipping thread to the CT and GP stadium threads and leave this one exclusively for MM.

I have to say i dont often agree with you, but i have to here. Guys i DON'T want to have to police the South African forum like i am the African one, but the more the provoking continues the more i will.

Mo you are an asset to the forums but the snude comments you often make are always seen by others as CT protectionism, please think about this in the future. And outlandish statements lead to outlandish responses and chaos.

Inertia, i know you are defending what you feel is right, but please dont lead to further chaos mate.

Romansa...i know you will always dart for the same stats back up as mr mo, but sometimes its better not to for alls sanity

Come on guys...the only people that should be worried about their d*cks are the women here that dont have them or care for having them.

Peaceful onwards please...

I really try and add my own personal insight into these forums, and that includes criticism. As i have said, i have nothing against any city, and when I point something out like a city going into recession, I am clearly NOT attacking it, but some forumers would prefer to see it that way so they can start juicy flame wars. I'm no expert and could defintely be wrong, but I am entitled to my opinion, just like people are entitled to their opinions (especially of Joburg).

I stand up for what I believe in, and always speak my mind - people might not like me for this, but I couldn't really care. I don't believe I have ever started any chaos or fights, merely just a bit of humour and pointing out some facts. I will continue to defend what I believe in and really hope that some forumers would cease with their personal agenda's and get on with what the purpose of this forum was originally created to fulfill.

Peace and love to all -

Then you swore at some people in the Soccer City forum... what is this thread exactly. We all know this is trouble-stirring. To go and "ou koeie uit dit put uitgrawe" (digging old cows out of the ditch) is very unwise and will illicit negative responses. Don't point out the splinter in someone eye when there's a plank in yours... I would suggest the mods close this thread immediately. Being proud of one's city, being proud of developments and sometimes having a sarcastic comment or snide remark in a normal forum is one thing, but to open a can of worms like this shows evidence of deep-seated issues that nobody else in SSC really shares or allows to get them into a complete hateful psychosis, enough anyway to create something as harmful as this thread can be.

Please close immediately!

All this will cause is someone getting :banned: Please, nobody else react to this or feed this monster... I want this nipped in the bud.

See this is what I'm talking about - this extreme over reaction to a simple and easily containable event.

I was merely pointing out where I was coming from, where I thought things where going, and where I think things should eventually go. I don't care if people reply or not, I'm just pointing out my stance so people don't get the wrong impression.

My stance: we need to take the internet far less seriously. It's impossible to express emotions/body language (in most cases *sneaky smile*) via it, and as such it is easy for people to be misunderstood or to go on the attack without technically doing anything wrong.

There's been quite a bit of tension here lately. Much of it has been city vs. city debate. I think we should keep in mind that the large majority of us here are here because we love SA and when we criticise a city we do it because we want what's best for it. Also, people do joke at times and simple jokes need not turn into huge flame wars.

I guess this is what happens when as a sub-forum we grow to quite a large number of members who all have their own set of views.

Agreed Lydon. I guess it's good to know that there is such passion for each person's city. That is the best possible conclusion that can be drawn from this.

NOW this thread can be closed :)

I actually completely disagree with what you are saying, he was not finger pointing or anything, merely providing justification, which we cannot deny. I gather you two have some issues, maybe solve that in private why dont you...

As for this thread, it is needed. I am tired of the same old moans and groans and "wars" on this forum. From now on instigation will be met with the same warnings as crazy outbursts. Posts like yours Annman are of that variety, designed to pull apart rather than pull together.

Please guys, i gather that most of you are mature adults, please act that way.

It seems to me that people just get upset with the "tone" of many of the comments. I think what's needed is to distance oneself a little from the comments and not make it too personal. This is an open public forum with many viewpoint, both positive and negative. I think it is important to have healthy criticism of any city/stadium - I welcome that. But everyone should try and adopt less aggressive tone. As was said earlier, we all spend a lot of time here trying to make this forum a world class place for addressing key infreastructural/social issues relating to our country.

Hmm... I guess I try not to be to flippant or unserious in the projects thread (that really is for the skybar) but if theres something I dont understand (particularly from a factual point) I wont have a problem challenging it. But generally I have no problem with critisims (alot of which I agree with) and light humour directed at each others cities (Im rather self depreciating) but I think alot of people take things in far to serious a light and also cry foul of any critisim they cant respond to (in my opinion if I can only give a really negative or defensive response Ill just leave it be - its the internet after all). Also I cant understand it when people complain about a very jestful comment based on a clear steriotype (ie cape townians are lazy or joburg is a giant mine dump) they clearly arnt true and are meant in some form of humour and if you clearly cant deal with it just let it be and let someone who has a better sense of humour respond (ie dont respond negatively to a "humourous" attack that just encourages a war and wastes pages of internet space!) My 2 cents :D ps I think we all need a big group hug

Agree, 100%. I also love how people will defend their cities so much.
