Thiruvananthapuram: Motorists in the city can now have a taste of ethnic cuisine or take home a food parcel while topping up on fuel, thanks to a novel initiative launched by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited.

The new facility was opened at the HPCL outlet near the Trivandrum Tennis Club at Kowdiar on Monday. HPCL Senior Regional Manager Suvendu Gupta told a press conference here that the company had tied up with the Mother’s Kitchen restaurant chain for the value-added service. He said the facility would be extended to more outlets soon.

Under the agreement, Mother’s Kitchen will operate three types of service counters at retail fuel outlets. There will be take-away counters, service counters with seating and full-fledged restaurants. Mother’s Kitchen managing director Venu Nath said the counters would offer a variety of ethnic food items.

Kwak! A lively, bizarre, in-the-face, name! The French rock group that performed in the city on Tuesday night were true to their name as they burst on to the stage with all the raw energy of rock music. Language posed no barrier as they swept the mos tly young audience off their tapping feet with their charm and music.

On a whirlwind tour of India for the second time, Kwak has been performing in many cities, including Chandigarh, Bangalore, Chennai and Goa. What is most striking is the rapport the group – comprising Damien Tartamella (vocals, harmonica), Julien Joubert (guitar, vocals), Guillaume Le Nost (Bass, vocals) and Xavier Hamon (Drums) – strikes with the public.

When 19-year-old Yanina Wickmayer played the winning shot and ensured a place in the final four at this year’s US Open, Thiruvananthapuram teamed up with Brussels to cheer her. Tennis lovers in the capital city have already begun prayers to ensure that Yanina wins her first Grand Slam.

Two years ago, Yanina had amazed spectators here with her magic serves and mesmerising volleys. She, along with Lauren Albanese, had won the women’s doubles crown in the Kerala Open - 2007, hosted by the Trivandrum Tennis Club (TTC). It was an International Tennis Women’s Federation (ITWF) Tennis Tournament with USD 25,000 as prize money. Yanina had also put up a strong fight in the women’s singles, reaching the semi-finals.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Would like to try yummy biriyanis for a change? The South Park hotel has thrown open a 10-day biriyani fest. You can step in for lunch or dinner at the hotel’s coffee shop till November 15 and relish veg or non-veg biriyanis.

The vegetarian varieties include Subzi Shabnam, which has garden fresh vegetable tossed in butter and fresh spices and gently steamed with cumin- flavoured Basmati rice. The Council’s regional officer M.R. Krishnamoorthy said that Gonzalo Teppa, Miguel Siso, Alberto Cheche Requena and Klever Camero were the four artists who would be performing in the city.....

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: How many bird species can you possibly find at Peroorkada, right in the city? The members of the Kerala Bird Race 2009 counted 34 species of birds! The sightings of Barred Jungle Owlet and Brown Hawk Owl indicate the density of trees of the Peroorkada area and the sightings of four species of water birds show the wetland habitat of the place.

The green lung of Thiruvananthapuram City, the Museum - Zoo Compound, went further ahead with 39 species, including migratory birds like Forest Wagtail, Little Grebe and Brown Flycatcher. Though the area is a typical habitat for house sparrow, none was sighted. Oriental Darter, the endangered and red-listed snake bird, also was reported.

The Kerala Bird Race 2009 at Thiruvananthapuram was held in six different locations in and around Thiruvananthapuram city with the active participation of 54 birdwatchers, ages ranging from 10 to 70. The Bird Race was coordinated locally by WWF-India, Kerala State Office and the city-based birdwatching group Warblers & Waders.

The participants were grouped into six teams and were equipped with binoculars and Bird log books. Peroorkada, Akkulam wetlands, Punchakkari paddyfields - Vellayani lake and surrounding areas, Arippa, Museum -Zoo compound and Kallar-Ponmudi were the bird race sites. Each team included an expert birdwatcher accompanied by budding birdwatchers and enthusiasts. All the teams were out in the field the entire day up till 5 p.m on November 15.

The wetland of the city, Akkulam, topped with 61 species and the significant sighting of the water cock. Grey Heron, Black-napped Oriole and Black Bittern were seen at the Lake. Common Kestrel, Orange-headed Thrush and Common Peafowl were the important sightings from Kallar-Ponmudi. Sighting of Peafowl is significant for this Bird Race as it is the first time that this bird is being seen in Ponmudi.

All the six team leaders with their teams later shared their experiences and presented findings. The location, number of species, Bird of the Day (most important sighting) and Dip of the Day (the bird most expected, but not seen) for each location, and the highlights of major observations were covered in the presentations.

The team Black Baza, who had surveyed the area of Arippa forests, won the first prize with a sighting of 87 species. The team Osprey, who surveyed Punchakkari paddyfields and Vellayani lake, bagged the second prize with 80 species and the team Honey Buzzard, who visited Kallar-Ponmudi area, won the third prize with 66 species. The entire teams reported a total of 145 species of birds during the Race.

Unus Kunju, the eldest among the participants, and Kevin S. Biju, the youngest birdwatcher of the Race, were also appreciated. About 30 photographs were displayed at the venue.

K.S.Prasad, hailing from Peringammala and a Dubai-based businessman, has imported a Hummer-H2 SUV to God’s Own Country. It is considered to be the first Hummer to hit the city roads.

Originally built by AM General Corporation for the US Military, the Hummer is known for its power. It was defined as a high-mobility multi-purpose vehicle and is often used to traverse terrains. Later, civilian versions of Hummer were introduced in the H2 and H3 series.

Cricketers Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh are among the few owners of the American SUV that is priced around Rs 1 crore.

Equipped with a 6.2-litre engine with 393 hp@5700 rpm, the left-hand drive Hummer H2 comes with various safety features that are not so familiar in the luxury vehicles now running on the city roads.

It is equipped with OnStar communication service that provides live assistance in case of an emergency. An in-built compressor is another feature of the vehicle that would be useful in case of low air pressure or puncture. A solution that could seal minute punctures is also provided with the vehicle.

The auto-transmission vehicle has all the common security features such as airbags and ABS.

Prasad is known for his love for vehicles and had imported a number of foreign vehicles, including Lexus. He had bought the Hummer in 2006.

Looking for Eric directed by Ken Loach, Broken Embraces by Pedro Almodovar, Shirin by Abbas Kiarostami, Dream by Kim Ki-Duk, Taking Woodstock by Ang Lee, Eccentricities of a Blonde-Haired Girl by Manoel de Oliveira, Polish film Sweet Rush by Adrezej Wajda, Dev D by Anurag Kashyap, Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja by T. Hariharan and Treeless Mountain by South Korean director So Yong Kim are some of the films in this section.

Seven French films will be showcased in the ‘First Time Directors’ category. Enough directed by Djamila Sharoui, In mom’s head by Carine Tardieu, Seven Years by Jean Pascal Hattu, 13 Square Meter by Barthelemy Grossman, On the Ropes by Magaly Richard Sereano, All is Forgiven by Mia Hasen Love and Celine Sciamma’s Water Lilies are the films to be screened in this section.

The registration for the festival ended on Saturday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A press mentorship programme for media students, organised by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy in association with the Kesari Memorial Journalists’ Trust, was inaugurated by writer and thinker P. Govinda Pillai here on Saturday.

The two-day programme is being organised as part of the upcoming 14th International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK) which is to commence in the city on December 11. Around 40 students from across the State are participating in the programme.

Participants selected from the workshop will be given a chance to work with the media and daily bulletin cells of the 14th IFFK, camp director G.R. Santhosh Kumar said.

“We will select some students from this workshop to form a team for media-related activities of the film festival. We will provide basic training to them on various aspects of cinema like script writing, review writing, and interviewing. We will also take up and discuss some film-related cultural issues,” Dr. Santhosh Kumar said.

He said the programme would focus on ‘a journalistic approach towards cinema.’ ‘Journalism and films,’ ‘Film, politics and culture,’ ‘Film and postmodern trends’ and ‘Hollywood films and beyond’ are some of the sessions planned.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Vyloppilli Samskrithi Bhavan here will host a special cultural evening on Sunday.

You get to listen to mystic music of Italy, flute recital, Baul music and enjoy clown dance.

Sandra Pasini, actress, singer and musician from Denmark, will be presenting Italian songs and clown dance at ‘Music and Theatre’ organised by Ekathara Baul Sangeetha Kalari, Nedumangad, at the venue from 6.30 p.m.

Sandra, who has been working as an actress since 1979, has studied various theatre techniques. She sings and plays instruments such as guitar, percussion and trombone. On Sunday, she will be presenting songs and in the second part, she will be presenting clown dance. The clown is like the ‘vidooshaka’ of Malayalam theatre. The uniqueness is that there are very few women clowns back in Italy, her native place, said Parvathy Baul, the exponent of Baul song and dance.

Sandra founded Teatret OM, an international group, in 1989, along with Antonella Diana in Italy and it is now based in Denmark.

Sandra studied contemporary theatre together with clown style with the famous circus family Colombaioni. She has been taking part in the international group ‘Vindenes bro’ led by Iben Nagel Rasmussen, who is an actress with Odin Teatret.

‘’Sandra sings from the mystic tradition of Italy. You also have songs of resistance in the tradition. It is her first visit to India.

Her clown performance will be adapted to our culture,’’ said Parvathy Baul. Another performance will be flute recital by Kudamaloor Janardanan.

Good to see such party dens existing on the main street. Normally we need to get in to four and five star hotels and would be a little high on expense front. This I am given to understand that not much heavy on the wallet too.

Director Katheryn Bigelows Hurt Locker which is going to be screened at TIFF this year

Nearly 50 films from 22 countries- that is the treat awaiting movie buffs from July 30 onwards as curtains will go up on the 15th Trivandrum International Film Festival (TIFF), organised by Chalachithra Film Society. Some of the films are going to be screened in the city for the first time.

'The Hurt Locker'

This will be the inaugural film. An American war film about a three-men United States Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team during the Iraq War. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, it was nominated for nine Academy Awards and won six including Best Picture and Best Director for Bigelow, the first woman to win this award.(Screening at Kalabhavan on July 30 at 6.15 PM)

My sons are just crazy about chilli chicken and dragon chicken.’’

The `Hay Festival,’ the annual get-together of literary figures, authors and thinkers, coming to India for the first time, was inaugurated by State Culture Minister M A Baby here today.

In his speech, Mr. Baby said Kerala, which had a rich literary tradition, was proud to host the renowned festival in the State.

National news magazine `The Week’ is hosting the event, based in Wales, as the main sponsor as part of the DC Books International Book Fair at the Kanakakkunnu palace here. The festival would conclude on November 14.

About 50 authors, thinkers and performers from the country and across the world would participate in the festival, celebrating writings from Kerala, India and around the world.

Guests who had confirmed participation in the festival include Mani Shankar Aiyar, Rosie Boycott, Bama Faustina, Bob Geldof, Namita Gokhale, Nik Gowing, Manu Joseph, Vivek Narayanan and K Satchidanandan.

For the last twenty years, Hay Festival has brought writers, musicians, film-makers and scientists together to cross cultural and social barriers and foster exchange of ideas.

Film-maker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Shashi Tharoor MP and actor Mammootty were among those present on the occasion. Cheers!!!

It was a highly appreciative and interactive audience that gathered to listen to poets and writers at the three-day The Week Hay Festival in Thiruvananthapuram which ended on Sunday. Photo: S.Gopakumar

The Week Hay Festival concluded at the Kanakakunnu Palace here on Sunday evening after three days of thought-sharing among novelists, poets and other creative writers on the subtle topic of creativity.

More than 3,000 book lovers visited the festival, organised for the first time in India by the U.K.-based Hay Festival and Teamwork Productions, an entertainment company. Nearly 50 authors from different parts of the globe talked about their craft and their perception of poetry, fiction writing and, generally, creativity at the sessions.

One of the sessions on the final day featured English/Welsh poets Gillian Clark, Menna Elfin and Paul Henry in conversation with Malayalam poet K. Satchithanandan and English poet from Tamil Nadu Vivek Narayan. What is the language of imagination for the individual poet and why do some poets choose writing in a language that is not their mother tongue? They discussed the challenges and also the possibilities of poetic expression in writing across languages and agreed that “poetry itself is a language, which transcends language barriers.”

In another session, Tishani Doshi, Gillian Clark, Menna Elfyn, Paul Henry, K. Satchithanandan, Vivek Narayan and C.P. Surendran presented six-minute readings of their poems in English and Malayalam. In yet another session, journalist writer Rosie Boycott explored the likelihood of a global food crisis consequent to the climate change. Upinder Singh, Manu Joseph, Bama Faustina, Sister Jesme, Pavan Varma, Nik Gowing, Meghnad Desai and Anita Sethi are some of the other writers who participated in the other talk sessions.

The festival's producer Sanjoy K. Roy said the organisers were planning to make this an annual event in Thiruvananthapuram.

“Audience participation was fabulous. We are overwhelmed,” he said. Peter Florence, founder director of the Hay Festival (which had for over 20 years been organising such festivals in the United Kingdom), said the festival now had an Indian identity also.

Irish folk-rock singer Bob Geldof gave a concert before a large audience at the Nishagandhi Amphitheatre in the palace grounds in the evening.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Rock star Sting made a surprise appearance here on Sunday night bringing the three-day long Hay Literary Fest to a rocking climax.

Inspired by his friend, the renowned Irish folk-rock legend Bob Geldof, Sting who sat incognito among the audience suddenly walked up to the stage and what followed was and electrifying duet which brought the crowd to its feet.

Geldof's concert was to mark the conclusion of the first Indian edition of the international literary festival which saw participation from authors like Vikram Seth, William Dalrymple, Sebastian Faulks and BBC anchor Nik Goving.

Sting had arrived in the Kerala capital with good friend Geldoff to cheer the later. However, the festival authorities kept his trip under wraps.

The Nishagandhi amphitheater where the performance was held drowned in cheers as Geldof invited Sting to the stage. ``I'm inviting my friend Sting to sing for you,'' Geldoff said after completing a number. The duo then went on to sing ``everybody's got a hole to fill, doesn't matter if your name is jack or jill..'' which left the crowd mesmerised.

Those who attended in the function were lucky to see two Legends "Geldof & "Sting" at a same stage..that too in Nishagandhi, Trivandrum.:applause:

Creativity and nature's creations:A Nilgiri tahr silhouetted against the misty hills of Eravikulam. One of the photos signed by poets, novelists and creative aristes who attended The Week Hay Festival in Thiruvananthapuram to attest their support to a campaign, ‘Conservation through creative expressionism.'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An unknown talent in Mammootty, the Bharat Award winning film actor, was on display here at the venue of The Week Hay Festival, where creative people from various parts of the world assembled to exchange ideas on the subject of creativity last week.

Signature campaign

At the entrance of Kanakakunnu Palace, where the festival was on, was a photograph signature campaign to enlist the support of poets, novelists and other creative artistes for the cause of conservation.

Four beautiful pictures taken by wildlife photographer Balan Madhavan, printed on canvas, were on display there with space on all four sides of the frames for the well-known writers and creative artistes to affix their signatures.

Pen in hand, Mammootty paused before each photograph for a few seconds thinking.

“We are the army to protect the nature of Kerala,” he wrote on the canvas capturing a breathtaking close-up of four wild elephants snorting belligerently straight into the camera.

The next picture showed a lone elephant against the early morning background of the lake in Periyar Tiger Reserve. “This picture is the signature of Kerala,” he wrote like a professional caption writer.

The third picture was that of a Nilgiri Tahr, wet in rain in the Eravikulam National Park. “This is the living nature of Kerala,” Mammootty wrote. The fourth picture showed a Nilgiri Tahr silhouetted against the misty background of the blue hills of Eravikulam and the animal was standing taut and alert like a sentinel.

Mammootty scratched his head for a moment and wrote: “The guard of nature.” Poet-novelist Vikram Seth signed the canvases in Malayalam.

Others who joined the campaign ‘Conservation through Creative Expression' included Bob Geldof, William Dalrymple, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Shashi Tharoor, Rosie Boycott, Michelle Paver, K. Satchidanandan, N.S. Madhavan, Nik Gowing, Tarun Tejpal, Paul Zacharia, C.P. Surendran, Charu Nivedita, Sugathakumari and K.S. Sachidananda Murthy.

These four pictures and 60 other photographs, which look more like paintings than scenes captured on film, are currently on display at an exhibition, ‘Songs of Silence,' now on at the Museum Auditorium here.

The exhibition, sponsored by Goethe-Zentrum in the city, will be on till November 21.

Exposure’, the first exhibition of photographs organised by Clicker's Hub, threw light on the young talents in the field

The city's first ever forum for photography-lovers, Clicker's Hub, clicked with photographers and viewers in the city! Its novel concept of street photography exhibition, ‘Exposure,' on the Museum grounds attracted a number of curious visitors.

The exhibition displayed photographs on subtle and vivid larger-than-life themes, colourful shots of culture and people, as well as the all time hot-choices, kids and nature. Images shot by 30 photographers gave the visitors a glimpse of promising talents from the city, set out to travel a road less travelled.

Inspired by a similar event that was held at the Cochin Marine Drive last December, by the photography lovers' group, ‘viewfinders,' the organisers of Exposure –Ananthu Ganesh and Bittu George – decided to create their own space in the city, thus giving shape to the Clicker's Hub.

Through social networks like Facebook, they managed to bring in the few good people passionate about photography, to share their clicks with the rest of the world – street exhibition being a good way to reach out to people. And the idea was a hit, the exhibition pulled in all sorts of visitors, including senior professionals, families, tourists and youngsters, thanks to the location.

Entries from all over Kerala

The compilation of photographs selected from over 80 entries that were sent from in and around Kerala was much appreciated and admired. What made it significant were amateur photo-enthusiasts sharing the same platform with professionals such as Jayesh Mohan, Manu Manohar, as well as the fact that only two women photographers, Zalma Jalal and Archa Satheesh were a part of the Hub's stint. It doesn't end here though – the Clicker's Hub is planning to go big and organise larger events in near future, all set to create its own mark in the city.

Tvm: Goethe Zentrum Trivandrum is hosting one of the most popular Oriental Rock bands from Vienna and Austria in Trivandrum. The band consisting of four Austrian, one German and three Indian artists will be performing for the first time in India on April 23, 2011 at Nishagandhi.

Ashram, the unique sound of European and Indian Fusion Rock features sounds of Indian tabalas mixed with guitar riffs, mystic sitar tones and rock voices embedded in Western grooves. The band came into being when the guitarist Judy Sepan travelled to India in 2004 and met Ajayan Gopi (Takil). Fascinated by the sound they were creating during the jam sessions, they started to envision a cross-continental band. One year later, they have already toured across Europe for seven weeks, with a huge rock event as the finale.

Ashram represents the music of two different worlds, with the frictions between each view and tradition only adding to the music. Ashram’s hope is that its music will communicate this cultural experience beyond words.
