The Taipei 101 Tower of Taiwan is the tallest building on Earth. Its height above ground is 508 m. This includes the 60 m spire; the building also holds the record for the highest roof (448 m).
The Taipei 101 Tower contains the world's fastest and most comfortable elevators. The building is thrilling to look at, an impressive tribute to steel, glass and incredibly clever engineering. And yet the design clearly reflects the local Chinese culture; for example, there are eight canted sections, eight being the lucky number in Chinese. Each section is embellished with a traditional Chinese symbol of fulfillment, the symbols being large enough to be visible from the ground.
The region where it is built straddles the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of fault lines that erupt in earthquakes every decade or so. There are also many typhoons in this region. There are therefore massive support columns and braces in place. Pairs of 2.46 by 3.1 m supercolumns on each face of the building work, together with 16 columns in the core form the vertical support structure.
The massive supporting pillars are made of boxes of 80 mm thick steel-plate, filled with concrete for stiffness. However, only steel is used above the 62nd floor. There are 16 of these giant columns to support the gravity-load. There are many lateral braces and moment-resisting frames around the building perimeter.
Wrapped around the supercolumns is a web of a ductile steel framework designed to bend during an earthquake. The frames support the outward slope of the building, making possible the repeating inverted pyramid shape.
There is a dedicated mechanical floor every eight floors, with massive floor-high steel outrigger trusses. These connect the columns in the core to the supercolumns on the perimeter, effectively widening the building to help it resist overturning.
Given the strenuous geographical circumstances, the engineering and materials technologies involved in the construction of this supertower are remarkable. The tower is made from pliant steel, which is strong and yet has a low yield to ultimate tensile stress ratio so as to be able to accommodate plastic strain in the event of natural disasters. The steel is at the same time, weldable, so the concentration of alloying elements permitted is rather low. The steel is microalloyed, thermomechanically processed and accelerated cooled to produce a fine microstructure without the excessive use of alloying elements which can compromise weldability. Five different kinds of steel plates were used, with yield strengths in the range 412-510 MPa and tensile strengths in the range 570-720 MPa. In all cases, the carbon equivalent (Pcm was less than 0.29. The plates were produced using the TMCP process. Specially constructed steel processing plant are needed to manufacture such alloys.
In addition, the tower is supported by 380 concrete-filled steel piles, sunk into the soil to a depth of 80 m.
http://www.msm.cam.ac.uk/phase-trans/2005/t101/ball.gif
Vibrations are damped by suspending a massive steel ball weighing 606 tonnes; steel is a wonderfully dense material; the volume of an aluminium ball would be some three times as large, which is intolerable for such an elegant design. The ball is suspended from the 92nd floor to reduce lateral vibrations. The ball is in fact made from a stack of steel plates of varying dimensions. It is connected to pistons which drive oil through small holes, thus damping vibrations. The photographs below show the ball during the construction stage of the building.
In its final form both the ball and the eight high-strength steel cables which cradle it, are painted gold. This is the largest wind-damper on Earth.
http://media.popularmechanics.com/images/PMX0505TW001-lg.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y34/retratos/Taiwan/DSC00048.jpg
While the large, tuned steel damper helps protect the main structure, the tower's 60 m spire relies on two smaller dampers to relieve the nearly constant wind buffeting. Without this damping, the vibration would lead to metal fatigue and failure within decades. Because of space constraints and the need for a large mass, the 4 tonne dampers are placed on rails that fit around the interior columns of the spire. The energy absorbed by the dampers in the spire is dissipated into a system of springs beneath the mass.
Two of the elevators in the building ascend at 17 m s-1 and yet present a comfortable ride; these are the fastest lifts in the world (34% faster than the previous record holder, the Yokohama Landmark Tower in Japan. They contain pressure control systems which adjust the atmosphere inside the elevator to prevent ear-popping. There are also active control systems which eliminate vibrations. The elevator cars are aerodynamically engineered to reduce the noise resulting from air flow as the lifts travel at high speed inside their narrow shafts. Alain Robert, the French Spiderman took four hours to climb the tower.

Here's an interesting article about Taipei 101 that appeared in the travel section of my local newspaper (Townsville Bulletin) yesterday. Check out the bizarre claim at the end lol. Enjoy!
Some kind of landmark
Proudly fusing modern engineering with traditional themes, the 508m-tall Taipei 101 is the pride of Taiwan’s capital city. Judy Chia Hui Hsu reports.
Rising to 508m above the bustling streets, Taipei 101, Taiwan’s gleaming new skyscraper, reigns as the tallest building in the world. It’s higher than the previous record holder, Malaysia’s Petronas Towers, by nearly 55m. Lined with aqua tinted glass windows, the 101-storey structure ascends boldly, seemingly unaware of the busy boulevards below. Here the streets are teeming with yellow cabs, rushing pedestrians, blaring buses and myriad scooters. The largest construction project ever undertaken in the nation, the $2.9 billion Taipei 101 dwarfs the rest of the cities shops and dwellings. The 51-storey Shin Kong Life Tower was previously the tallest building in the city. Most of Taipei’s buildings stand about four storeys tall, some reach 10 floors in height and a few top out at 20 or 30 storeys.
Taipei 101’s architect, C.Y. Lee & Partners, sold its design to the developers, Taipei Financial Centre Corp., by infusing the structure with the number eight, a lucky Chinese number and a homonym for prosperity. Eight floors make up each of the building’s eight sections. Lee & Partners said the tower would serve as a funnel, a veritable sieve, that would draw riches downward. That’s powerful symbolism for Chinese businesspeople, and the builders bought it. Conceived by architect C.Y. Lee, whose trademark style blends Chinese and contemporary designs, Taipei 101 represents one of the few skyscrapers in the world that employs traditional Chinese architectural elements. Modernised replicas of ancient Chinese coins, symbols of abundance and wealth, grace of the edifice’s four faces. And dragons – powerful beings in Chinese history and symbols often used by emperors themselves – crouch in a protective stance, poised at the corners of each of the towers eight streamlined sections.
Taipei’s new treasure promises something for everyone. Outside the tower is an art lover’s feast, and inside, it’s a shoppers delight. Near Taipei’s City Hall, the popular Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store and the trendy Warner Centre, Taipei 101 has already become a place to see and be seen by the city’s in crowd. A vibrant energy is abuzz here in the highly fashionable Hsinyi District, where the wealthy live and the hip locals hang out. Taipei 101 is home to a 162-store shopping mall, and has offices suited for about 10,000 workers, indoor and outdoor observatories, a rooftop restaurant, and the Taiwan Stock Exchange, to be located on seven floors.
The new attraction also houses the world’s fastest lifts. Riding the double decker cars travelling at 50km/h, visitors can reach the 89th-floor observatory in less than 39 seconds. The 60m spire topped off the building last October, and since November the shopping mall – the first area in the building open to visitors – has welcomed throngs of customers.
Taipei 101 is poised to become a top shopping destination in Asia. Its leading competitors include Hong Kong’s Pacific Place and Malaysia’s Suria KLCC. However Taipei 101 wont be the world’s tallest building for long. The Shanghai World Financial Centre, with a projected completion date of 2009, will have a ‘Freedom Tower’, rising to 541m, 33 more than Taipei 101.

Taipei 101 to open viewing deck for Moon Festival (Updated 12:45 a.m.)
2005/9/14
By To Lee, The China Post
Still searching for a place to go for the Mid-Autumn Festival? The Taipei 101 will open its brand new 91st floor outdoors observatory deck to the public on that day and allow visitors to view the full moon on the highest building in the world.
After conducting a survey, the Taipei 101 revealed that most people hope to have an outdoors observatory deck instead of being allowed to enjoy the Taipei night view through glass windows. Taking their comments to heart, the building announced that it will open up the 91st floor deck for the visitors' viewing pleasure.
The deck is scheduled to be open to the public on Sept.16, two days before the Mid-Autumn Festival. However, the operating hours for the deck is subject to change due to considerations for the safety of visitors in the event of bad weather.
On Sunday, the Taipei 101 will host a special event. On that day, the deck will be equipped with several telescopes, accompanied by astronomers to explain and unveil the mystery of the stars and planets.
The ticket price for the 89th floor deck is NT$350 for adults, and NT$300 per person for group tickets. If visitors hope to visit the 91st floor, they will need to pay an extra NT$100 per person.
People interested can reserve their tickets at (02) 8101-8898.

9/10. Creative design; great height; sleek look. Nice location too: no surrounding scrapers to block views of the whole building.
Also, I like the fact that the floorplates stay the same size all the way to the top (almost). Like WTC and Aon Building (Chicago). This is a rarity in supertalls--almost all of them taper off markedly above 70 floors.

I don't like this building. Firstly, it uses it's narrow roof top and spire to steal the title (just like Petronas towers). Secondly, it is located in Taipei which is a very dirty city. Thirdly, the overall design is shit.
well obviously u havnt been with the program taipei may have some residential biuldings that are dirty on the outside but the inside is very tidy and modern, to live in taipei is very exepnsive and taipei isnt dirty its rather clean now. look at shanghai or soemtthing or seoul they are dirtiuer then taipei

Taipei 101 no match for record climber

A 30-year-old Australian man on Sunday beat 75 international competitors to capture the men's group title in the first ever race up Taipei 101, the world's tallest skyscraper, organisers said.
Paul Crake, the five-time winner (1999-2003) of a similar competition held at New York's Empire State Building, finished the climb in 10 minutes 29 seconds and won 200,000 Taiwan dollars (about R39,600 ).
Competitors ran up 91 floors, or 2046 steps, covering a height difference of 390m, compared with the Empire State Building's 86 floors and 1576 steps.
The 508m Taipei 101, which cost 58-billion Taiwan dollars to build, was inaugurated in December last year.
Rudolf Reitherger from Austria, who beat Crake in the 2005
Empire State Building race, came in second at 11 minutes 46 seconds, and Jaroslaw Lazararowicz, 35, from Poland ranked third with 12 minutes 11 seconds.
In the women's group, where 25 competitors vied for the title, Andrea Mayr, 26, from Austria, the 2004-2005 winner in the Empire State Building run, won with 12 minutes 38 seconds, also taking home 200,000 Taiwan dollars.
Melissa Moon, 36, from New Zealand finished second at 13 minutes 34 seconds, followed by Israel's 29-year-old Svetlana Bachmand.
Another 1001 people took part in the so-called "self-challenging" race.

Taipei's dirtiest areas are probably quite dirty and comparable with the dirty areas of cities like Shanghai and Seoul, but on average Taipei is really not that bad.
I wonder if a bunch of SSC forumers running up and down the stairs like a gang would attract suspicion.

How could a regular guy like me ever begin to describe a building like this?
A strong 10. The strongest 10 posible. This is not just an achievement for Taiwan, this is an awe inspiring achievment of mankind. It is not only tall, but it has style par excellence, a presence about as commanding as a building could possibly have.
The size is as big as Sears Tower, but infinitely more interesting and memorable.
I rate in in the world's top 5 towers.

I don't care for the pagoda design. It looks like a gimmicky copy of historic Chinese architecture. The color is bland and flat. The inside, however, is breathtaking.

Taipei 101 didn't use the spire to steal the title. It's already the tallest building in the world to its roof. The spire just gives it that extra. But whether it has the spire or not, it's the WTB.
I don't like the design that much either. However, what really amazing about the building is not its height, size, or design, what really amazing about this building is how much technology they put in. This building is known as the most technologically advanced building in the world. Inside the walls, it's full of those tech devices that most of us don't even know about.

While I find the horizontal divisions somewhat distracting, I still find the building quite pleasing and certainly original. A little out-of-place considering the relatively short surroundings, but still a nice scraper. 9.0.
While I do prefer higher ambient bldgs., I do like the visual effect of such a high building with nothing in the background but sky, very unique.

Somewhat resembles the Jin Mao, and I think the Jin Mao accomplished more than this one. The spire and grey facade under it ruins the building up close (pic #5), but doesn't look too bad from afar. It also doesn't quite fit in to its surrounding - considering Tapiei isn't known for tallness or density, it's awkward seeing 101 sticking out. However, it does get some credit for being the tallest, eh?

I am not a huge fan of this one. Yeah, it's tall, but something about it is so inherently inelegant. The fact that each setback tapers outward while the tower does not taper overall makes it look heavy-set and awkward. I also think the color choice is a bit garish for a building of this height and prominence in the skyline. And that detailing is so excessive and frivolous. I can't help but feel that this thing is awkward and overwrought.

How can you say that? Petronas towers are wonderful. Taipei is nice, but
not nearly as gorgeus as Petronas. In fact, if Taipei was much smaller, like 200 m, no one would like it as much as now. I only like it because it is the talled skyscraper ever built. I'm glad they will build much taller in Dubai.

No comment. Definitely 5/10. The design look terrible for me. BUT...if at night, the light shine the building incredibly. So...plus 1.5. Total....6.5/10.

A very unique and imo pleasing design. It is also obviously the tallest building in the world for now. Don't like it as much as Petronas so I will give it 9/10

Impressive Structures
By ALLAN KOAY
If you’re looking for superstructures and breathtaking skyscrapers, it is Asia you should be focusing on these days. The competition to build the tallest and largest is centred in Asia, as have been proven by the likes of the Petronas Twin Towers and the Taipei 101 in Taiwan. In countries such as Hong Kong and China, there are already superstructures in existence, with still more in the planning.
These national landmarks are immediate symbols of pride, affluence and aspiration. Much more than that, they also help to bring interest to their own little corner of the world, and this can have economic benefits.
The Taipei 101 skyscraper resembles an unfolding bamboo shoot. It is currently the tallest building in the world.
These wonders of the modern world are the focus of the new Discovery Channel programme, Man Made Marvels, which looks at such megastructures as the Petronas Twin Towers, the Taipei 101, the Okinawa Aquarium in Japan, the Hangzhou Bay Bridge in China and the Hsuehshan Tunnel in Taiwan.
Architectural historian Dr Ian Morley, who is involved in the Taipei 101 episode, explains that issues such as the cost of urban land, practical needs and the changing aesthetics of the 20th century may be why Asia is now in the building race.
“There are also corporate attitudes, where large businesses wish to locate their offices and headquarters in the big cities of Asia,” says Morley in a telephone interview from Hong Kong. “There’s the technology and money to do it as well. There are also government incentives.
“In Asia, you have now government-owned corporations that are willing to invest very heavily in large architectural projects, for example, the Petronas Towers. And at the same time you have government encouragement with the private sector which is what really happened in Taipei.”
He says cultural reasons also abound where skyscrapers allow non-megacities, especially in Asia, to “punch above their weight” in the international context of democracy, culture and economics. He adds that skyscrapers also have a capability to overcome cultural barriers that nations in the west place upon Asian societies.
“So there’s a huge symbolism in Asia for building high,” says Morley. “It’s a sense of modernity, progress, advancement and that Asian countries have arrived.”
He says that it may look like the west is no longer interested in such endeavours, but there are skyscrapers being proposed and built there but nothing of the scale that is occurring in Asia right now. One of the reasons is obvious.
“In a way, the west was influenced by the events of Sept 11,” he says. “It has created a nervousness among potential investors to invest in very large architectural schemes of a vertical nature. At the same time, I think it has also brought a sense of nervousness to people using very high buildings.”
Also, in western countries, the requirements are sometimes stricter. In London, he says, there are very strict planning and design rules that have to be followed.
In Paris, building high means building outside of the city, because of the regulations to preserve the historical core of the city.
While in Asia, architectural design mostly means integrating and harmonising with nature, in the west, the idea is more to challenge and overcome nature.
Morley agrees: “There is a difference in cultural mentality between the east and the west. In Taipei, when they were building the 101, there was a lot of feng shui influence involved. Harmonising with nature is very prevalent in Asian cultures.
“In the west, it’s more of a command of nature. You can almost say a conquering of nature. What you find is, in terms of the structure though, the traditional means of building skyscrapers is exactly the same in the west.”
In that sense, the Taipei 101 is an eastern building in terms of design, but the technology used is western.
Morley went to Taipei in August 2002 and saw the construction of the Taipei 101 from a steel frame into today’s tallest building in the world.
The Taipei 101 was officially opened in December 2004. Designed by C.Y. Lee and Partners, the building has 101 floors above ground, eight sections, and resembles an unfolding bamboo shoot. Using a tuned mass dampening system, it is built to withstand earthquakes and typhoons.
Feng shui also played an important part in determining certain features of the building.
“The front of the building faces the south,” says Morley. “The design of the building has eight sections, and eight is an auspicious number in Chinese culture. When they built the 101, they found that there was a road very close to the building that would create bad energy. What they did was put a fountain in front of that particular side of the building to remove the potential for bad luck.”
Asked if the Taipei 101 is really invincible against the forces of nature, Morley replies: “Well, if you have, say, something like the South-East Asian tsunami earthquake, the power that’s unleashed will almost flatten anything.”
The 101 is designed to withstand a force of up to seven on the Richter scale, which is what Taiwan has experienced.
“Really, when you get into one of these buildings, it feels safe inside,” says Morley. “I can understand when people say, ‘Oh, if there’s a big earthquake, I want to be inside the 101!’”
On whether there is any truth to the allegations that the sheer weight of the 101 has caused new seismic activities around Taipei, Morley says: “That’s very hard to prove or disprove. Ultimately, the answer lies not so much in the two or three years since the Taipei 101 was finished; it’s going to be in the next 20 or 30 years, to see if the epicentre of earthquakes within the Taipei region become more centred upon the city as a consequence of these buildings. But it’s too soon at the moment to say because the earthquakes that have happened have been very, very minor.”
Man Made Marvels premieres today at 10pm, on Discovery Channel (Astro Channel 50). Subsequent episodes will air every Thursday.

Ambition Reaches New Heights: Erecting the world’s tallest building—in an earthquake zone
from POPULAR SCIENCE (http://www.popsci.com/popsci/bown/2004/engineering/article/0,22221,767963,00.html)
By Michael Moyer
Although “World’s Tallest Building” is a fleeting title—almost every year, it seems, a different Asian capital unveils an even more audacious skyscraper plan—the technological achievements of Taipei 101 won’t soon be forgotten. Taiwan’s capital wasn’t an obvious spot for a 1,666-foot building. Not only is the city frequently buffeted by typhoons, it sits near the Pacific Ring of Fire, the most seismically active area on Earth.
To survive high winds, skyscrapers need stiffness; to survive earthquakes, they must sway. Faced with that conundrum, Thornton-Tomasetti Engineers and Evergreen Consulting Engineering devised a package of innovations that serve the $1.7-billion building’s versatile needs. For starters, they hung a 730-ton steel pendulum, called a tuned mass damper, from the 92nd floor. The movements of the damper offset strong gusts and shakes. Meanwhile, the building’s frame makes it flexible enough to absorb earthquake energy. Two dozen giant vertical columns provide support; a steel web wraps around the exterior, adding ductility; and every eight floors, outrigger trusses connect the columns in the building’s core to those on the exterior, further distributing the structural load. The final tech touch: Visitors ride the world’s fastest elevators, which travel at up to 55 feet a second. Find out more at the Taipei Financial Center website (http://www.taipei101mall.com.tw/).

Taipei to welcome 2007 with fireworks on world's tallest building
December 26th 2006
by News Staff
Taipei residents will welcome the New Year with a party and a million-dollar firework display on the world's tallest building, the Taipei 101, officials said on Tuesday.
The Taipei City Government said some 500,000 people are expected to attend the New Year's party at the foot of the 508-metre Taipei 101, with various performances taking place simultaneously in that area.
"There will be concerts, dances and a quiz, the winner of which drive home a new car," the city government said in a news release.
The highlight of the party will be the countdown to the New Year and a three-minute firework display from the top floors of the 101- storey Taipei 101.
"The firework will cost one million US dollars. We are looking for sponsors for it," Taipei 101 press officer Hsieh Wen told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.
The New Year is a major holiday for Taiwanese, who are ethnic Chinese, but the most important holiday is the Chinese New Year.
The Chinese New Year holidays start on the eve of the lunar year and lasts for around 10 days. Also called the Spring Festival, it is a time for family reunion, visiting friends and relatives and exchanging gifts.
The Chinese New Year holidays in 2007, the Year of the Pig, will begin on February 17, the New Year's Even, when family members get together for the late-night family reunion meal consisting of dumplings, meat and fish and wine.

I agree with you on the first part. For the second part, I believe there're already some buildings in Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai and Shenzhen that are uglier than Taipei 101, though they aren't nearly as tall.

When the clock struck midnight, a fireworks display lasting 188 seconds illuminated the Taipei 101, enchanting the tens of thousands of revelers who had come to enjoy the New Year's Eve Party sponsored by the Taipei City Government last night to count down to the new year. The fireworks show, which attracted at least 520,000 people.

IMO this is really a part of their design since this is inspired by the Pagoda.
By the way since I'm a Taipei 101 addict. I'll post here my avatar. I took it last year near the subway entrance. i'm planning to go back there on saturday. Hope to get more shots.
