Wu-Gambino January 22nd, 2004, 11:24 PM Taipei 101
Taipei, Taiwan
HEIGHT: 509 meters/1,671 feet
FLOORS: 101
COMPLETION: 2004
ARCHITECT: C.Y. Lee and Partners
Taipei 101 presents a new model for the Asian skyscraper, one explicitly evocative of traditional Chinese architecture. Designed as a segmented shaft of eight outward sloping segments, the tower resembles a giant glass pagoda. The green tinted glass cladding is meant to mimic the color of jade. The segments, consisting of eight floors, lean out slightly, creating the distinctly stacked or tiered silhouette.
The tower is dressed in ornamental motifs drawn from traditional Chinese architectural sources. Large scale ornamental elements and "auspicious emblems" cap each segment. Medallions grace the center of the tower, while decorative features protrude from the corners. An elaborate, stylized spire, 508m high, tops the structure. Lee's architecture employs botanical as well as traditional architectural themes. Each eight-storey segment has been likened to a segment of a bamboo stalk, and the whole project evokes, in the words of the architect, a sense of "petal-like" blooming, giving the tower a sense of "upgrading and fullness", which are important concepts in Chinese culture.
Despite its historicist references, the tower introduces a number of pioneering technological innovations. A giant pendulum suspended from the 92nd floor acts as a passive mass damper, reducing the building sway at the top of the tower, and counteracting the lateral forces induced by high winds and earthquakes. Other technical innovations include high-speed pressurized elevators that travel at record-breaking speeds. They will reach the observation deck in just 39 seconds.

rj2uman January 22nd, 2004, 11:34 PM I love it for two reasons the glass and the fact that it beats Petronas. I didn't give it a 10 b/c of the spire though 9/10
Kommentare January 22nd, 2004, 11:34 PM I'm not a big fan of this building, but i like that they kept traditional style......
7.5/10
airsickpenthousedweller January 23rd, 2004, 12:14 AM A grandiose landmark with Eiffeltower-like visual strength of expression.
This building is truely an asset for the nation as well as for the rest of the world.
Spectacular in an unforced way, which gives it value for a seemingly endless period into the future.
9/10

10/10 for every new WTB.
Congratulation, Taipei! :)
Jo January 23rd, 2004, 05:20 AM A WTB built in an earthquake zone, that's some engineering feat.
Lots of traditional design elements.. that's a plus as I see it, even if it means breaking up the facade in horizontal sections. It's a beautiful tower and an impressive sight!
9.5!
hongkiu January 23rd, 2004, 07:58 AM good building! 9/10;)
Schroedinger's Cat January 23rd, 2004, 05:31 PM great pictures though the building isn't great;)
7/10 for its height
waterloo January 23rd, 2004, 11:17 PM 10/10 Perfect building.
Style™ January 24th, 2004, 06:08 AM What a great building! 8.5/10!
TYW January 24th, 2004, 01:23 PM dun really like it but looks cool at night 6.5/10
baqthier January 25th, 2004, 12:25 AM 8/10. It's beautiful and obviously original. But too green.
wolkenkrabber January 25th, 2004, 04:31 AM i like the ‘ä–k101 allot i really like the deisgn and the size of it is cool i gave it 10/10

It kinda bothers me
Xeni-2 January 26th, 2004, 07:24 PM I don't like too this building.
It is too cubic and it's the same architecture on all the sides.
I puts 6.5 nevertheless because it is modern and rather high.;)
Frankfurter21 January 27th, 2004, 07:08 PM 7/10, only because of its height....
I hope there will be built another scraper which will hold the crown... I don't like that "traditional" (asian) style
il fenomeno January 27th, 2004, 07:14 PM 3 or less. a pile of chinese food boxes

Well its from an "traditional" (asian) country... what do you expect...?
ryanr January 31st, 2004, 09:09 AM I agree with Aquamadoor, its in Asia so why not make it Asian style? Does everything have to be western?
I think its a great looking building. Very sleek and stylish. The facade is awesome. The building is also quite amazing during the night. I give it a 10/10.
And for il fenomeno, isnt it cool how they were able to take something so simple like a chinese food box and use it for a design of WTB. That's if you look it at that way.
AtlanticaC5 February 1st, 2004, 02:19 PM 9/10
A great skyscraper, it's really worth the World's Tallest-titel IMO. I really like the color of it!
LeCom February 1st, 2004, 08:09 PM 9.5
Although a bit overrated, the skyscraper is impossibly cool.

Taipei 101 followed the same style as Jin Mao, a traditional Chinese pagoda in a architectural style of Tang dynasty.

Very original design and the immense height is just amazing. Looks like a giant plant. It does look occasionally awkward but the height makes up for it.

james2390 February 8th, 2004, 03:33 AM Piece of crap. To be the worlds tallest, it needs a better design.
matthew_p2004 February 9th, 2004, 03:36 AM I don't like it at all
Nothing like that should be the world's tallest
Liz L February 13th, 2004, 02:37 AM 8/10 - At first it's a little hard to "wrap my eyes around it," so to speak, because of the non-Western architectural style, but...
It has really good, soaring height. the facade can really dance with the light, and I like the ornament along the "set backs." The cornice along the top of the base is also a very nice touch of variety. Good night lighting, too. Defintely a step beyond glass box monotony.
However, I'm not sure what that brown whatever it is running up the tower's side in Sher's picture is all about, and I'm not quite sure what I think about the spire....
sin February 13th, 2004, 01:44 PM Here are some pix found. I don't like its shape neither, but it is amazing to see this huge building in person.

zaceman February 13th, 2004, 09:27 PM The only reason its the tallest is because its repetitive and stretched design. Thats the only redeeming quality of this structure, its the tallest. but cmon, its sinfully ugly! Its a joke to the architecture it was modeled after. The dark blue green color?? It looks so stiff and awkward.
The Euro February 20th, 2004, 05:57 PM That´s a beautieful skxscraper!

i guess only people who live in suburban area ask about the "what that brown whatever it is running up the tower's side in Sher's picture". If you know something about construction of skyscrapers. You would know what it is.
sjambler February 25th, 2004, 11:51 PM 8.5/10
I don't like the fact that the spire is considered part of the "official" height, but I think it does look good on the building.
stardust March 4th, 2004, 01:16 AM Fantastic, 9.5/10, great heigth, great design, GREAT BUILDING
:eek2:  :horse: :horse:
Ashram March 4th, 2004, 06:56 PM New world's tallest eh? It's ok, and I actually like the color. It's rather unique. I don't like those huge coin...decorations. 7/10
The Messiah March 5th, 2004, 11:44 AM It's built in a unique style, and i like the colour of it.And the height .........wow ;)
8.5/10
Wisma March 5th, 2004, 08:40 PM Just awesome!. 9.5/10. You love this tower or not.....I love this one from the start of U/C.
Javier March 8th, 2004, 07:24 PM Only because of its height my vote is almost good.
7.5/10
mhe-ann March 9th, 2004, 05:52 AM Not so amazing in style but it looks stunning at night...I'll give it 7/10.
Fabio March 12th, 2004, 12:52 AM 5.5/10

Well minus the attitude I'm guessing it's scaffolding and an elevator because I didn't know either.
As for the building: 9.5/10
I love the way this building looks. The green glass and the irregular shape make it look totally unique. Which I believe is essential IMO in a WTB. It's a love it or hate it tower and I love it. I give praise to all the architects out there who want to build something that makes our cities look better than ever.
bluga March 18th, 2004, 01:01 PM pure force, 10/10.:eat:
7 World Trade April 3rd, 2004, 02:46 AM personally, i love the building's architecture, but i feel uncomfortable with the thought of taiwan holding the wtb title. as for the roof and the spire, it looks like the architect have trouble figuring out how to best adorn the top, and the top looks rather tacky...
7/10
SoboleuS April 3rd, 2004, 09:47 PM I don't like it too much, it looks like gigantic accordion :sly: But is impressive because of its height. I give 7.5/10
SHORTY April 5th, 2004, 05:04 AM It's height is it's only saving grace. It looks like a characature(sp).
Trances April 6th, 2004, 03:34 PM So can you get up it yet or what
Just asking ?
Meeg April 7th, 2004, 11:37 AM a pile of chinese food boxes
http://www.agreatplacetostay.net/chinese_food_rice_box_a_sc.gif
it looks as a pile of chinese food boxes but thats what I like about this building - it's unusual and of course designer has a big imagination and sense of humour :)
airsickpenthousedweller April 7th, 2004, 01:35 PM The architect borrowed from the way airport control towers are often designed, thus making each section wider at the top than at the bottom. The slight angle enables people inside looking out to see the city.
This one design-aspect hadn't been mentioned on these forums yet (if I'm not mistaken).
hoody April 7th, 2004, 01:46 PM I'm not a great fan of this building, give me the petronas anyday!
It's to rigid in design, far to cubic for my taste!
7/10
does that stepped design make it look shorter than it actually is or is it just me?!?
Matthieu April 10th, 2004, 06:59 PM 8,5, I'm not a fan of the design of the building but it's impressive.

coz it is the tallest building in the world mah, haha
andy77aus April 17th, 2004, 09:09 AM 8/10
I saw it last month visiting Taipei. Its a pretty cool design but looks a bit stupid jutting out all by itself. They really need to build some taller buildings around it.
Orfeo April 17th, 2004, 09:20 AM 8/10
Its design is ok, but there are much better out there. The hieght pushes it about 5.
Dilaz89 April 17th, 2004, 10:32 AM top scraper! 9.5!

HA -- I agree, it is blah -- it is trying too hard, like Bank of Manhattan did in the 1920s in NYC -- they were preoccupied with WTB that they forgot everything else...what is with that spire...sheesh, the ugliest crown of any WTB ever, even the WTC had a better top and that was a box ;-)
james2390 April 18th, 2004, 08:30 PM Ok,this tower is almost lame...1/10

Leeigh April 19th, 2004, 01:45 AM like the height but the design...dunno bout that and to RJ...dude, Petronas towers has better design than Taipei101 and there are twins... I give Taipei101 a 7. Rather boxy.
Wu-Gambino April 19th, 2004, 02:37 AM 7/10
I really don't know what to rate it, but it is unique. Except it's all alone, which doesn't help.
D_Y2k.2^ April 23rd, 2004, 10:28 AM i could have given it only 5 but due to the height i give it a 7
SebaVeron04 May 3rd, 2004, 10:27 AM What a sbuilding. It does so well to combine traditional and modern styles
DamienK May 9th, 2004, 03:29 PM 8/10. Nice spire and interesting setbacks.

10/10

ron_guevara May 28th, 2004, 05:45 AM pretty nice and has character. I'm just not too fond of the color, though. and the round thingies near the base... 8/10
Dark Star May 31st, 2004, 07:54 AM I hated this building at first. But the more and more I saw of it while it was being built. It grew om me.
9/10
Rapid June 7th, 2004, 02:55 AM Its a tall one! Doesnt even look that tall, but its all good, 9/10
beyond 1000 June 7th, 2004, 03:07 AM Excellent engineering but I'm still questioning the look. The top superstructure needed better integration to the rest of the building. I would give it 7.5/10.
Icanseeformiles June 25th, 2004, 12:26 PM when is it due for launch? didn't know Taipei had a space program. i see the gantry is in place. BTW what is that gantry thing? 7.5
Aquarius June 27th, 2004, 12:39 AM I do not like much, I prefer other big skyscrapers as the towers Petronas, the Sears or the 2IFC 8/10
Phobos June 27th, 2004, 12:55 AM I like the building because it values the tradicional chinese style, and it's not a copy of occidental buildings.
7.0/10
Monkey June 27th, 2004, 01:07 AM 8/10
S'okay I s'pose.
:dunno:
Leeigh June 27th, 2004, 01:27 AM I'd give it a 7 ...just because of the height, architecturally..asian and european style gone wrong. Looks more like a gigantic monument than a building..or some Chinese style game pieces or somethin.
Venezuelacom June 27th, 2004, 02:12 AM it isn't taht bad. 10
Rickster885 July 6th, 2004, 07:20 AM I gave it a 7.5 because of its good height. Also, it is a good choice of style for China because it follows their traditional style of architecture. The building looks amazing at night. The reason I took points off though is because it doesn't look as cool during the day as other buildings.
Bunny July 7th, 2004, 03:17 PM Taipei101 is quite good~
Especially I liked the interior design. But the outside is not as attractive...
8
yoyo22 July 12th, 2004, 07:25 PM 7.5/10
In its heart, its still a box, but it hides it well. The shape is awkward, but still not bad. Just needs to have some other talls around it to give some contrast. Maybe they should have built it closer to the main cluster?
LibertyTwo July 15th, 2004, 04:22 PM I have grown to like this building more and more
The spire now looks really cool, esp once they open to obs deck in the little sub-spire floors at 100 and 101st
I like it now 8.9/10
TallBox July 15th, 2004, 08:58 PM I love it for two reasons the glass and the fact that it beats Petronas. I didn't give it a 10 b/c of the spire though 9/10

popopo August 3rd, 2004, 06:02 AM If Taipei 101 stand in NYC, HK, Chicago, Tokyo, Bangkok, or Kuala Lumpur, it will look better. But in Taipei, so ugly because no other tall buildings to balance the overall skyline.

Rapid August 4th, 2004, 05:54 AM It's a 10/10, hey it is the world's tallest.
Rapid August 4th, 2004, 05:55 AM If Taipei 101 stand in NYC, HK, Chicago, Tokyo, Bangkok, or Kuala Lumpur, it will look better. But in Taipei, so ugly because no other tall buildings to balance the overall skyline.
Sorry man, not NYC or Chicago, it just doesnt fit.
T-back August 4th, 2004, 06:04 AM I don't like this building. Firstly, it uses it's narrow roof top and spire to steal the title (just like Petronas towers). Secondly, it is located in Taipei which is a very dirty city. Thirdly, the overall design is shit.
741 August 4th, 2004, 07:00 PM World tallest BUT very very....very ugly 4 only.

OtAkAw August 5th, 2004, 03:08 PM I don't like it... I hate it! Bad and Good fortune are just parts of China's fortune-telling culture thingy....

Jules August 7th, 2004, 11:49 PM I think this building is incredibly ugly. 3.5.
koskaar August 8th, 2004, 12:42 AM I like the design but the facade looks cheap. The colour should be darker and those roung thingies at the bottom don't really fit there.
8/10

7/10
What's wrong with Taiwan?
Lloyd-Jones August 8th, 2004, 03:13 AM I rate this building highly on its conformity with traditional chinese architecture.
markII August 13th, 2004, 06:02 PM 0/10
just ugly. cannot believe they spent so much on this piece of crap.
Prestonian August 19th, 2004, 06:39 PM 7.5/10, it has an impressive height and whilst I quite like the fact that the design has a traditional 'Asian' style I just don't think the building works well as a whole. The base is too large and blocky and the spire looks a bit 'plonked' too. It also sticks out like a sore thumb in the skyline. There are however some nice details and specifications and the facade is pretty good.
David3820 August 26th, 2004, 08:10 PM Wow, I'm surprised that I rated it as much as most. I don't like it at all but since it's a great achievment being the tallest and looks a little pretty at night I gave it a 4 and can't wait untill a much more beautifull building surpasses this one in height and it better be snappy!!
Dubai-Lover August 26th, 2004, 11:58 PM the tower itself looks quite good, but i don't like the top of it, it's quite dull!
so i give it a 7.5
cursiveletter September 5th, 2004, 11:34 PM i love it. imo. 9/10
SteelCity32 September 6th, 2004, 12:54 AM I think it is kind of lost in that skyline. A lot of shorter buildings, and then the tallest in the world. Not exactly my type. but good none the less. 7/10
vid September 6th, 2004, 11:19 PM It sticks out alot. But it's very nice looking. i gave it a 10
kombateruso September 9th, 2004, 06:21 PM :eek2: Hello a Tutti!!

sakor1 October 3rd, 2004, 09:29 AM One of the ugliest mofos going around, but man is it tall. Just don't like the constant "stacked noodle-box" look personally. The glass on the facade is a nice shade though.
6/10 from me
Chad October 3rd, 2004, 06:27 PM It's tall, It's glass, it has a spire....what u expected more!
DD2020 October 4th, 2004, 04:21 AM Classy and very uniqely beautiful , deserve to be the word's tallest.
9.5.... :)
STR October 6th, 2004, 07:15 PM +4 for the basic design
-4 for use of spire
+4 for facade

darad October 28th, 2004, 11:18 PM 6/10 Someone once said it looks like food boxes stacked and they were right. One look and it reminded me of tupperware food containers. It's sad to see a building so tall and majestic not actually look so good. Better than a box design but not by much.
Sitol447 October 30th, 2004, 11:25 PM 7/10 - .....
Caiman October 31st, 2004, 12:23 AM one of the best looking skyscrapers I ever saw.
andysimo123 November 6th, 2004, 12:22 AM Its a great building because its the tallest but only 7/10 because theres much nicer lookinh talls than it.
Taufiq December 3rd, 2004, 03:48 AM Love the height, the hype, the effort that went into constructing it... although it's remarkably fugly.
7/10
empersouf December 3rd, 2004, 10:05 PM This building is a cheater. 7.0 I don't like the design either.
Hardouin-Mansart December 4th, 2004, 12:33 AM This building is a cheater.
You mean like the ESB, which makes a platform pass for a floor...
STR December 4th, 2004, 12:49 AM ^At least you can stand on them.
Eitherway, I think T101 is at least 448m (roof), which is enough to finally beat out Sears.
Paolo December 20th, 2004, 03:21 AM 6.5 its too high for Tajpei
andysimo123 December 25th, 2004, 11:05 PM In the Top Ten of Everything 2005(the Book) it says that Taipie 101 is not, I REPEAT is NOT THE WORLDS TALLEST BUILDING. Its says Patronas towers are. The roof height on the Patronas towers is 452.0 meters, Taipie 101 is 448.1 meters. So thats right if you did it by roof height and not spires Patronas wins. If it was done by spires Sears Tower would be the tallest.
coth December 25th, 2004, 11:41 PM Petronas Towers' roof is on about 385 meter... Then spires...
Vlad the Great December 25th, 2004, 11:46 PM Looks like something I can eat at the Chinese food store a block away...
Still, it's very tall.
Gotta give it a 9!
BTW does anyone have pics of spiderman on this tower? :)
andysimo123 December 26th, 2004, 12:29 AM Petronas Towers' roof is on about 385 meter... Then spires...
No its 452 meters to roof in the book and every where I have checked its classed as 452 to roof. Taipei 101 is classed 448.1 to roof and 508.1 to Spire.
www.sercan.de December 26th, 2004, 08:06 PM good influence of traditional style....8/10
DamienK January 2nd, 2005, 02:12 PM No its 452 meters to roof in the book and every where I have checked its classed as 452 to roof. Taipei 101 is classed 448.1 to roof and 508.1 to Spire.
I'm afraid you're mistaken. The Petronas Towers are 452 m to the tip of the spires, and 378.6 m to the roof. There is no clearly defined flat roof on the towers, so the "roof" is taken to the top of one of the upper setbacks, where the windows stop. Above these are a series of smaller setbacks containing window washing equipment and the base of the spires.
These figures are confirmed by the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.
coth January 2nd, 2005, 02:39 PM No its 452 meters to roof in the book and every where I have checked its classed as 452 to roof. Taipei 101 is classed 448.1 to roof and 508.1 to Spire.
No. It is 452m to spire.
Roof is 378.6m. Then cone and spire.
Top floor is 375m to 438m on TAIPEI 101.
so we have
category - Petronas Towers / TAIPEI 101
spire - 452m / 508m
roof - 379m / 448m
top floor - 375m / 438m

despite some flaws in the design and a weak facade, i think this tower is unique. i'm glad it stands apart from its relatively bland western counterparts.

A pagoda wannabe. Not really successful though, in my opinion. Could have been much better. The ideas were good, but the design is just not there.
On the other hand, its interior, details, and heigh deserves some marks.

Its beautiful, unique, but totally out of proportion for the city, as well as the Tuntex in Kaoshung... (?)
There super talls, surrounded by mid-rises. I wish more Skyscrapers would be developed around it, to not give it such a naked feeling. Its nice, but I think it should have little brothers and sisters to add some character.

Azn_chi_boi March 15th, 2005, 05:17 PM 8/10 not good, the other buildings in Taipei isnt even 3/4 as tall as this one, looks overrated!
EndlessWalt March 16th, 2005, 06:11 AM If Taipei 101 stand in NYC, HK, Chicago, Tokyo, Bangkok, or Kuala Lumpur, it will look better. But in Taipei, so ugly because no other tall buildings to balance the overall skyline.
4.5/10.
World tallest BUT very very....very ugly 4 only.
What is this? The tallest building rated so low.
Surprise. The tallest building rated much below 50.
I don't like this building. Firstly, it uses it's narrow roof top and spire to steal the title (just like Petronas towers). Secondly, it is located in Taipei which is a very dirty city. Thirdly, the overall design is shit.
If you look closely at them, they are all resgistered on the same date, with only one post, and with stupid names.
I wonder if all the posts above were done by the same person.
Who would be so pathetic to do this kind of studpid and boring act??

Pengui April 21st, 2005, 05:50 AM Technically great.
Apart from that, a strong taiwanese look ;-) But I think the building failed to make a strong enough statement on the international scene, although I can't really say why. Maybe because it's too isolated an achievement ?
I like the idea to make it green, but I think somehow the cladding could look better.
Still the building is much better than expected, with great lighting as well.
8.
Justadude April 21st, 2005, 08:52 AM A great idea, but it could've been better done. The green is just a little too much, and the base looks horrible. The spire is ok at best. I really wish the design had been a bit more polished, considering how prominent a building this is.

I love the design and it really seems to stand out compared to everything around it.
superchan7 April 24th, 2005, 05:54 AM Very very unique concept...but I don't like it.
5 for the innovation, 1.5 for the height. 6.5/10
Jaybird May 3rd, 2005, 12:23 AM 10/10, may even beat the CN Tower, I think, and definitely unique and cool enough for being the world's tallest building.

an architect May 7th, 2005, 08:39 AM I honestly think that the architects of Taipei 101 should be ashamed of themselves for designing such an assinine skyscraper.
I think I'm being very generous to give it a zero on a scale of 1 to 10.
It wouldn't be unfair to give Taipai 101 a negative 6.

LOL. good comparison!
I simply hate it. I think Taiwan should tear it down and rebuild. American Tomahawk missiles might be able to help speed up the process.
KingWest May 8th, 2005, 03:12 AM one word: ugly.
Latoso May 15th, 2005, 03:53 AM I think it will look better once it gets some mediums around it to soften it a bit.
Ashok May 15th, 2005, 05:10 PM ugly for our current tallest, 5/10
Altius June 3rd, 2005, 08:00 AM 9/10 cuz the shape is stunning, unique and it's green. Those silvery ornamental elements are a bit too much tho.
mtb_nz June 4th, 2005, 09:12 AM The Taipei 101 shows good Chinese architecture. I like the outward sloping segments, they look cool.... Even more interesting is the way it is designed to withstand earthquakes and the wind 10/10
ksunarjo June 4th, 2005, 09:12 AM LIKE IT

ASupertall4SD June 21st, 2005, 04:01 AM i think it looks nice, but in that city, with the height of the surrounding buildings it looks so damn out of place it is rediculous. It is 5 times larger than anything on the skyline. Just dumb in my opinion. In a place like Hong Kong, or new york, dubai, and this building would get a 10. But, for me the problem is the overall look, within the scope of its environment, and where it is, the scraper looks horrible.
Scotty June 21st, 2005, 04:28 AM 10/10
looks like a cactus :D
R@ptor June 21st, 2005, 05:18 AM I really like this tower. The pagoda design is well done...in fact its one of the few really good highrises with 'asian' design features. I also like the green glass and I don't think we need to talk about the height.
9.0/10.0
Fern June 21st, 2005, 08:10 PM The only thing going for it is its height really!! 7.5/10

The Taipei 101 Tower of Taiwan is the tallest building on Earth. Its height above ground is 508 m. This includes the 60 m spire; the building also holds the record for the highest roof (448 m).
The Taipei 101 Tower contains the world's fastest and most comfortable elevators. The building is thrilling to look at, an impressive tribute to steel, glass and incredibly clever engineering. And yet the design clearly reflects the local Chinese culture; for example, there are eight canted sections, eight being the lucky number in Chinese. Each section is embellished with a traditional Chinese symbol of fulfillment, the symbols being large enough to be visible from the ground.
The region where it is built straddles the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of fault lines that erupt in earthquakes every decade or so. There are also many typhoons in this region. There are therefore massive support columns and braces in place. Pairs of 2.46 by 3.1 m supercolumns on each face of the building work, together with 16 columns in the core form the vertical support structure.
The massive supporting pillars are made of boxes of 80 mm thick steel-plate, filled with concrete for stiffness. However, only steel is used above the 62nd floor. There are 16 of these giant columns to support the gravity-load. There are many lateral braces and moment-resisting frames around the building perimeter.
Wrapped around the supercolumns is a web of a ductile steel framework designed to bend during an earthquake. The frames support the outward slope of the building, making possible the repeating inverted pyramid shape.
There is a dedicated mechanical floor every eight floors, with massive floor-high steel outrigger trusses. These connect the columns in the core to the supercolumns on the perimeter, effectively widening the building to help it resist overturning.
Given the strenuous geographical circumstances, the engineering and materials technologies involved in the construction of this supertower are remarkable. The tower is made from pliant steel, which is strong and yet has a low yield to ultimate tensile stress ratio so as to be able to accommodate plastic strain in the event of natural disasters. The steel is at the same time, weldable, so the concentration of alloying elements permitted is rather low. The steel is microalloyed, thermomechanically processed and accelerated cooled to produce a fine microstructure without the excessive use of alloying elements which can compromise weldability. Five different kinds of steel plates were used, with yield strengths in the range 412-510 MPa and tensile strengths in the range 570-720 MPa. In all cases, the carbon equivalent (Pcm was less than 0.29. The plates were produced using the TMCP process. Specially constructed steel processing plant are needed to manufacture such alloys.
In addition, the tower is supported by 380 concrete-filled steel piles, sunk into the soil to a depth of 80 m.

Vibrations are damped by suspending a massive steel ball weighing 606 tonnes; steel is a wonderfully dense material; the volume of an aluminium ball would be some three times as large, which is intolerable for such an elegant design. The ball is suspended from the 92nd floor to reduce lateral vibrations. The ball is in fact made from a stack of steel plates of varying dimensions. It is connected to pistons which drive oil through small holes, thus damping vibrations. The photographs below show the ball during the construction stage of the building.
In its final form both the ball and the eight high-strength steel cables which cradle it, are painted gold. This is the largest wind-damper on Earth.

While the large, tuned steel damper helps protect the main structure, the tower's 60 m spire relies on two smaller dampers to relieve the nearly constant wind buffeting. Without this damping, the vibration would lead to metal fatigue and failure within decades. Because of space constraints and the need for a large mass, the 4 tonne dampers are placed on rails that fit around the interior columns of the spire. The energy absorbed by the dampers in the spire is dissipated into a system of springs beneath the mass.
Two of the elevators in the building ascend at 17 m s-1 and yet present a comfortable ride; these are the fastest lifts in the world (34% faster than the previous record holder, the Yokohama Landmark Tower in Japan. They contain pressure control systems which adjust the atmosphere inside the elevator to prevent ear-popping. There are also active control systems which eliminate vibrations. The elevator cars are aerodynamically engineered to reduce the noise resulting from air flow as the lifts travel at high speed inside their narrow shafts. Alain Robert, the French Spiderman took four hours to climb the tower.
