Renong Corporate Centre, Kuala Lumpur.
The Master Plan for the Renong Corporate Center reflects the strong commitment of the Renong Group to recognize the historic significance of the 36 acres Merdeka site and aims to create an architectural complex comprising of a blend of uses.
The proposed uses are:-
high quality residential and service apartments,
a 6-star 450 room luxury hotel,
a 2,500 seats performing arts center, and
a variety of retail outlets.
The planning is around two foci:
1.A 4.2 acre public amphitheatre and a Peoples Park commemorating the Nations historic moment and,
2.A large green "forest" symbolizing Renong's recognition of the importance of the Malaysian rain forest to its nations heritage and identity.

What happen to this project. Is it totally scrapped or what? :?
D_Y2k.2^ January 23rd, 2004, 03:50 AM Well, this is one great project. Was really looking forward in year 2000There are some rumours saying that the project is put on hold due to people going againts it(reason is the Plaza Merdeka should be preserved).
THT-United January 23rd, 2004, 09:04 AM Wow... That's one really huge project!
Where in KL is it located? Should be somewhere in the City Center right?

Yeah. The project supposed to take place where the current Stadium Merdeka and Stadium Negara located. Meaning to build this, both of the building has to to be torn down.
TYW January 23rd, 2004, 11:27 AM wah! cool. they should look for a new location lah, so no need to tear down the stadiums
SEED January 23rd, 2004, 05:36 PM  its a great project~ but to knock down Malaysia most important and well... historical buildin(i mean that stadium) is a NO NO!!! :nono: why dont they just upgrade the stadium and build those buildin round or outside the stadium?? or they can knock down other buildin outside the stadium and build it there~ theres lots of old buildin in that area rite???
archilless January 25th, 2004, 06:40 PM maybe they dont want to maintain the stadiums anymore.. those stadiums are very old (to KL's standard la.. hehe).. and upgrading the old stadiums is costly and not a good source of income for the owner compare to new development..
glenj January 28th, 2004, 04:35 AM I'm gonna play the devil's advocate here  - I think the stadiums should go, notwithstanding their historical significance. Perhaps, a tiny area of it (where Tunku Abd Rahman stood as he proclaimed Merdeka) could be preserved for historical value with plaque or some monument as part of the redevelopment. The area occupied by the stadiums is quite large, and being in the heart of the city, could be put to better use. After all, the stadiums are not regarded as 'tourist attractions' i believe. At least I don't see them on tourism brochures etc. And they aren't exactly works of art either. :angel1:
tomkat January 28th, 2004, 05:34 AM Yup. agreed.
Same goes to Pudu jail. One has to realize that it is not actually an "Alcatraz". And for being at the edge of BB shopping area and occupy such big area justify it even more. :D

Well this project has been thru a lot of reincarnation.........the latest being Renong City. I've not personally seen its plan but it should be much different from this as it includes a high speed train to Singapore. ;)
By the way, this parcel of land are now owned by the UEM Group which Renong is part of so this project is kinda defunct. I am keeping my fingers crossed for a white knight to rescue the project. :D

yea....you're right.....there's a public outcry that both the stadiums should be preserved. But the reason the project are put on hold is because of the financial crisis which hit Renong hard.....not the preservation of the stadiums.

Well......rest assured that the stadiums won't be torn down :okay:
Both the stadiums are now listed under the heritage building status. ;)

This parcel of land are huge. Maintaning the stadiums are no doubt costly but there are still many events being held at the stadiums (esp if it were to be done up nicely). As KL wants to host international events and concerts......the stadiums should come in handy. Traffic jams are minimised too as there are two Starline stations and a KL Monorail station serving the stadiums (Hang Tuah and Plaza Rakyat stations for Starline and Maharajalela station for KL Monorail). ;)
I am sure revenue from the concerts could finance the upkeep of the stadiums. This excludes grants from the govt as the buildings are listed under heritage status (I believe there are a fair amount of grant given). :)

Well.....they do looked neat from above and not to mention 'retro' :D
Anyway having two extra stadiums to serve the city isn't a bad idea. Afterall not every concert or events could afford our national stadiums. Stadiums could be nice if preservation are done properly. ;)
As I've mentioned in my last post, the land parcel are pretty big and a huge development like that could bankrupt the developer and KL could face a serious oversupply of office space! ;) Should the stadiums left untouched.....there's still a large enough space to built Suria KLCC, Menara Maxis and the Petronas Twin Towers! :D

Well ....there is a proposed project for Pudu Jail as well but it too had shelved due to the lack of funds and poor demand due to the financial crisis.
And the public wouldn't want to preserved the jail as far as I know........but there is a proposal that the jail gateway to be preserved ......;)
dun worry......Pudu Jail would be gone for good if there is a taker for development for that area! :D
szehoong February 1st, 2004, 12:02 AM Let us all take a look at this picture to see how big is this parcel of land......:D

SEED February 1st, 2004, 08:23 AM lookin at those pic~ i think Plaza Merdeka can be build without knockin down Merdeka Stadium~ :D sooo many space round it~ wat bout those little highrise opposite PMerdeka??? next to PRakyat~ why dont they knock that down instead of knockin that stadium?? wit different design PM and PR will connect together~ maybe it can become world biggest skyscapes cluster... yeh... well... thats ma hillariuos idea 'k~ :D

Actually that's a workable solution that I think UEM Group should think about. They could actually wrapped the entire development around the stadiums and since these days, many development wants convention centres....concert hall etc....the stadiums are a perfect substitute! :D
This would be similar the the Araneta Center in Manila where the mall are actually wrapped around the Araneta Colliseum. :okay:
Thus....this would be a win-win situation! :)
Nova Singapore February 2nd, 2004, 08:04 PM Yup guys, good thinking - it was the idea all the while since the mid '90s to have the southern KL skyscraper cluster in the Plaza Rakyat & Merdeka areas... let's see what happens!
Blabbyboy February 3rd, 2004, 04:16 AM Demolishing Stadium Merdeka will be the STUPIDEST OF STUPID mistakes that Malaysian developers and government authorities have ever made.
If they're serious about sites of historical importance, and in MAlaysia - there are few sites as historically significant in terms of Malaysia's modern history - they should clean it up and preserve it. They're even better off putting a glass bubble on top of it than demolishing it.

agree bro~:guns1: :D
baqthier May 9th, 2004, 07:17 AM Instead of Plaza Merdeka, I believe it would do good as a residential area. It's rather on a hill and peaceful in terms of traffic too :)

Well..according to my brother, actually there is a plan by PNB to build a high rise condominium there..at the moment it supposed to be for PNB stuff only. That was the news, but there is no updated on that after that...
baqthier May 9th, 2004, 07:43 AM Big news lah like that..better than commercial ones..else jam in KL lagi teruk
ZaHiRnYa??? May 9th, 2004, 08:31 AM Big news lah like that..better than commercial ones..else jam in KL lagi teruk
Well...it wasn't announced yet. Maybe if in a twist of something else, they decided to make that place as a commercial one...who knows ;)
Hopefully not la. If build residential area, it is a good idea cause can face KL Tower and KLCC as well.

ZaHiRnYa??? November 21st, 2007, 07:10 AM no. that project got scrapped already long time ago :)
szehoong November 21st, 2007, 08:27 PM Yup...scrapped long time ago. Supposed to be built on the site where Stadium Merdeka and Stadium Negara is but since now the two stadiums are under some heritage act so I guess they can't built anything there.
And Plaza Merdeka also used to be called Renong City and Renong collapsed liao lo :)
We have discussed this before ........well.......please do search for old threads before flooding this forum with new ones. Thanks! ;)

If you happen to look around better, you would have noticed that our dear new forumer here have been opening new threads about old / existing projects that have been discussed on other threads before.
Apart from that, he had been posting pictures and infos from Pachay's blog which all have been discussed here before as well.
One or two is all right but this is getting out of hand. :ohno:
You need to stick around and be more observant more often. Most of the time, I have merged and move threads even before many have seen em. I do not need you to tell me how to do my job. Thanks!

Anyway I really like your enthusiasm in posting on the forums for the past few days! Keep it up! :okay:

It's a cool project but it's a shame that they scrapped up the whole project~
