The Mozambican capital, Maputo, will host the 2011 edition of the All-Africa Games, the continent's largest multi-sports event.

The decision was made by the general assembly of the Supreme Council of Sports for Africa on Friday.

Mozambique will take over from Zambia, who pulled out last year saying that the competition was too expensive to stage given the current global financial crisis.

Football is one of as many as 24 sporting disciplines played at the Games.

Mozambique's deputy sports minister, Carlos Jose Castro de Souza, told the BBC's African sports programme Fast Track that Maputo will be ready for the Games.

"We have a sports complex in place, and in November next year the new National Stadium will be ready, for football and athletics," he said.

"So we only have major refurbishment to do to the infrastructure at the sports complex. We have lodging capacity for the athletes."

Current holders Cameroon are the most successful team in the men's football event at the All-Africa Games, having won gold four times.

Women's football was introduced at the 2003 edition, with Nigeria winning gold then, and again in 2007.

I think 2 years will be enough for them to upgrade their infrastructure. I'm glad that another African country was chosen to host this tournament. It will greatly benefit Moz and I agree with Angcammoc that Moz need marketing lessons as most of us just learn about it from friends and colleagues who goes there for a vacation. I guess All Africa games willbe a good excuse of going to Moz.

Maputo to host the All-Africa Games in 2011

The All-Africa Games Organizing Committe (COJA) has guaranteed that there's money available to start, in April, building work on the athletes' Village for the next edition of the games, due to be held in Mozambique in September 2011.

The infrastructure, to be built in the outer Maputo suburb of Zimpeto, near the National Stadium, is estimated to cost 90 and 120 million US dollars.

COJA is currently working to legalize the plot of land where the athletes' village will be built. It is cater for about 10,000 people, including 6,500 athletes and other members of the delegations.

Mr.Saia expressed satisfaction with "winning the battle" of funding, but warned that the complete victory can only be claimed when the other infrastructure across the country are rehabilitated and are in a good condition to host the games.

This will only be the third time that the games have been held in southern Africa. Originally the games were to be hosted by Zambia-but the Zambian government withdrew its proposal on the grounds of rising costs. Mozambique stepped into the breach, and the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa announced in 2009 that Mozambique would host the games.

The games will cover 26 sports including athletics, football, swimming, squash, badminton, volleyball, basketball, tennis, roller hockey and boxing.(All Africa News)
