Due to my research of historic hotels of Portugal, I would be most grateful for your candidates. Beside still existing and operating hotels, I will also examine and demolished or hotels that have been converted to some other function during history. The criteria is following:
I: hotel must be built untill the 1930 s
II: luxurious establishment, prominent position in the moment of its inauguration

HISTORIC HOTELS in POVOA DE VARZIM

Traditional gambling / Beach therapy city


Grande Hotel da Póvoa (in the beginning Palácio Hotel)

it was in recent years known as Hotel Mercure Póvoa de Varzim, since last year it change its name back to Grande Hotel da Póvoa (also one of its former names).

it is a classic/modernist architecture hotel, gambling themed, built at the same time as the casino in 1934. from the architect Rogério de Azevedo, who also designed the casino.

HOTEL LUSO-BRASILEIRO / HOTEL UNIVERSAL / OTHER 19th CENTURY HOTELS
there are earlier hotels, one of witch there's still the building, but is now an extebsion of city hall (Hotel Universal). No pic for now. The oldest hotel in town (running since late 19th century!!!) is Hotel Luso-Brasileiro, near Grande Hotel. no pic for now. both built in classic Portuguese architecture typical of late 19th century.

Quinta das Lágrimas in Coimbra! The gardens are where D. Inês, lover of then prince D. Pedro, then Peter I of Portugal, was killed by king's order, in the XIV century. Then D. Pedro, was so furious that when he was enthroned, he demanded the assassination of Inês' killers and that she should be adored as a Queen after her death. Legend says that the blood is still in the fountain, where a red spot can be seen. The hotel itself is a palace from the 18th century, but a fire in 1879 obliged that it would be rebuilt, so the architecture is XIX century dominant. King D. Miguel, Duke of Wellington (who helped us to defeat Napoleon), Amália Rodrigues all slept here. It has golf, spa, the luxurious gardens... and a few minutes away from the city centre, near river Mondego.

The "Hotel do Elevador" (Lift's Hotel) owes its name to the XIX Century water-moved funicular that still works as a mean of transport between the City and the Bom Jesus Sanctuary.

Near by Santuário do Bom Jesus, you can enjoy one of the finest views of Braga.

Completely rebuilt in 1998, is name it´s related with the water powered elevator (19th century) that nowadays still working.

With 22 double rooms, the customers can take advantage of a total privacy and an exclusive service. All rooms have bath-room with hairdryer, direct phone, ar conditioned, mini bar and satelite TV.

This hotel is also famous due to the panoramic restaurant, which can serve 120 people, containing itself a meeting and party room for about 150 people



Began as an inn for pilgrims who arrived to Bom Jesus do Monte Sactuary. The hotel already appears in XIX illustrations as "Hotel Higienico" or "Grande Hotel". The last portuguese royal family used to stay there in August, attracted by the park, where the green is everywhere.

É sabido que a última família real portuguesa lá passava alguns dias em Agosto, atraída pelo parque, onde a Natureza instala o verde por todo o lado.

O tema é muito interessante, nem sei como ninguem se lembrou disto antes. Aquela informação só a pus depois porque só a encontrei depois, no entanto o que pus inicialmente era importante para contextualizar o hotel. No entanto já tinha posto as fotos antigas, que mostram que realmente é um hotel histórico.

^^pelas fotos que colocaste parecia apenas um apeadeiro do elevador. nao dava a entender que era um hotel antigo, talvez convertido em 1998 era isso que se percebia.

the other former hotel Aura Campista (1863) possibly demolished to build Hotel Europa (1908) is currently on rehabilitation. And its not on Portuguese style, it has some features similar to Grande Hotel.

no texto dizes que é um palacio do sec. XVIII... é um hotel aberto desde o sec. XVIII? tenho as minhas duvidas. no site tb pouco ou nada diz. Não sei se estás a perceber, mas eu nao estou a perceber nada, e duvido que alguém de fora perceba. Nao te estou a atacar, mas simplesmente a saber sobre o assunto.

Ou é um palacio reconvertido recentemente a hotel? nesse caso, nao se trata de um hotel histórico... percebes? A mim parece tratar-se de um hotel de charme, convertido a partir de um palácio, e não um hotel histórico. Mas nada posso concluir das tuas palavras e do que diz no site.

O hotel está aberto desde aí, sim... mas se não for, o que não é explicado, o Wellington esteve ali instalado no início do século XIX, quando mandou os franceses daqui para fora, tento plantado árvores que ainda hoje estão ali, com mais de 190 anos... e também lá ficou hospedado o Rei D. Miguel.
A informação existente não explica e eu só escrevo aquilo que encontro no site oficial, wikipedia e etc. Poderia não ser hotel oficial, mas mesmo como palácio fazia serviço como tal...

Hotel Astoria in Coimbra, Palace in Bussaco and Curia Palace in Curia (all belonging to Hotéis Alexandre de Almeida) were all invited, but unfortunately, they never responded...

In general, from the whole Portugal, only Grande Hotel do Porto showed real interest and supported the project on which I am most grateful to their wonderful general manager Marta.

Hotels like Grande do Porto are giving me the strength to carry on with my project! :)
