Nah, they are commieblocks no matter what you call them
And they have nothing to do with communist or facism :D
It's just mass storage for human beings, like Whoose Homepage noted :D

Oh sorry!
I though you called them Commie blocks because they are in old commie countries, so here they are, the Spanish Commie Blocks!!!:lol::lol::lol:
In fact, they are a version of the french one, because the construction system used in the beginning was from France.
Aleksey January 25th, 2004, 08:24 AM Thanks! Great updates!

   :)
sOmeOne January 25th, 2004, 08:33 AM Yes, that building would look like a big dildo if not the windows :D But with these windows it looks almost perfect - one of the best things I have seen in years
HD January 25th, 2004, 01:17 PM but did the commies really invent them? such blocks have been built as "storage for human beings" before - in america (new york city in the early 20th century). why are they not called the american blocks...why commies?

Because only socialist countries use them as the main storage method. You see those things even in villages in countries like Russia, while in US they are rare.
HD January 25th, 2004, 08:51 PM hm, well this may be true about the US, but in other countries (including western europe and many asian countries) these "commie" blocks were used as often as in the communist countries.
anyway, great update. but torre agbar is imo horrible.
Vertigo January 25th, 2004, 09:58 PM Great update! :okay:
I'm curious how the facade of Torre Agbar is going to look in reality. It's a weird building. Hotel Diagonal is also... interesting.

A Frank Gerhy skyscraper for the city of Barcelona.
The new complex will be covered with stainless steel and with glass
In the zone of the future station of the Sagrera, the architect Frank O. Ghery has planned to construct an office tower of 34 floors and of 145 meters of height. The building consists of five bodies, of different heights, and with the fronts covered with stainless steel or with glass. a architecture, similar to the Museum Gugghengeim of Bilbao designed also by Ghery. Close to the singular building, there will be constructed a museum of the mobility dedicated to the transport that will have a spectacular cover of broken lines. The future equipment will occupy a surface of 7.000 square meters. Both buildings have been conceived under criteria of sustainability and, in this respect, the tower will incorporate, between other elements, solar systems and fronts of thermal utilization

De Snor October 2nd, 2004, 05:10 PM I would love to know more about the high-speed-train network in the BCN area.
Only Sagrera seems to be known here.
What about the line coming from the south/west ?
Is there a website about these projects ?
Booze October 3rd, 2004, 12:21 AM De snor, in the other thread I made a mistake, when I said "the magic triangle where BCN inner city lays in" I really wanted to say "where BCN inner city FUTURE lays in" as the zone is nowadays a quite standard district :) but in the future it will foresee the city's growth to come.
Booze October 3rd, 2004, 12:32 AM About the new TGV stations:
BCN has many train stations for regional and metropolitan trains, but they are fully underground.
Plaça Catalunya for instance has an inmense traffic bellow the square as there are 2 metro stations, metropolitan trains FGC , and Renfe (regional trains and metro trains). All that underground, of course.
There are two stations that were like european ones, with the tracks at street level. One of them is Estacio del Nord, nowadays restored as the main bus station and an sports arena and gym.
The other is Estació de França, a wonderfull and very stylish station, that have little or none traffic now. The station is currently used as a university building in the nearby offices (its a bit as the orsay museum, but not as magnificent) In some years the last tracks will be turned into the ciutadella park expansion, the central BCN library (really needed) and offices (all that more money to finance other things).
The biggest train station is Sants, spanish largest and dealing more traffic that any other spanish one. Sants is located in a building, but its fully underground too. The train tunnels and its 14 platforms are bellow streets level. When the TGV arrive to BCN, 2007 the latest, it will first stop at sants. The station will be increased, the bus station put underground to, the metro tunnels, restores, new parkings will be created, and the TGV will have a new space. All that is being finances trough expanding comercial space and new offices above the station as it is underground, it allows to build on it. The result will be this:

http://web.newsguy.com/skyscraper/sants.jpg
http://www.lavanguardia.es/09_06_2004/bar/rb0901ainf.jpg
Restoring will begin in a just a few weeks from now.
After that the TGV line will cross the whole city underground (we have straight streets, which allow this easily) and then it will arrive to the brand new Sagrera Station, the design of which is not definitive (it will not be built until 2009 aprox.)

De Snor October 3rd, 2004, 06:30 PM Thanks for the update but I have a few questions:
1.
Is there already in the existing tunnel of the C60 Granollers-Mataró a tunnel for rail traffic built ?
2.
Is there an new extension planned east from Blanes => to Lloret ?
3.
On the Glories interchange there is a new train station planned.
Isn't this on the existing line from Passeig de Gracia to Estació de França ?
4.
I see there is an extension planned from Glories to the Poble Nou area along the Diagonal going further to Badalona. To "Pep Ventura" ?
5.
L5 is going further north , to be connected with L3 near "Vall d' Hebron" perhaps ?
So L3 is planned further east to "Trinitat Vella" ?
6.
About the rail extension to La Geltrú (from Sarriá - FGC ?): is it going to follow the existing lines to Vilafranca del Penedès and from there a new line ?
7.
I've read in the Spanish section about the IV Cinturo that was introduced by Sr. Maragall. From Abrera to Granollers.
Is there a plan from where exactly it shall be built?
To be connected with the interchange C16/C58 near Terrassa and then ?
8.
From Sabadell there is a new line going up north ? Is that towards Caldes Montbui ?
9.
L2 :are there 2 branches towards la Zona França planned ?
Booze October 3rd, 2004, 07:46 PM Well, lets see:
1) Not yet, the map I posted is on the basis of future extensions. Nowadays it seems quite clear than an orbital metropolitan train line has to be built someday but it has to be build by the state, or at least in a way such as the tracks have the spanish width (1680mm), different from the european one. It is not build yet and It wont be build until many years form now I wolud say.
2) If you mean highway yes, it is planned and seems rather secure, but the project is not ready, so it will take time too. If you mean train, the train exists but only with one track, so it should be doubled. Again, it is not known when they will do it.
3) In glories there are three main tunnels. One that connects estacio de França with the arago street tunel. This is almost unused and it should be transformed into metro someday. The other two tunnels connect Plaça Catalunya with Sagrera merdiana and Plaça catalunya with sagrera TGV, both exist nowadays but they have no stop at glories. The only thing to do is a new station but on the existing tunnels.
4) Yes, It is not even a project, better not pay much attention to it.
5) Yes and yes, both projects are U/C now, the L5 will arrive to Vall d'ebron very soon. The L3 will be extended but it will take a bit more, but it is U/C already.
6) No idea, it doesnt make sense to me at all. There is a project the L12, that will be built for sure from castelldefels (south) to BCN going through the baix llobregat (connecting about 500.000) but it is not sure at all how the final design will be.
7) The 4th ring (highway) is very controversial. There is ecologist's oposition. It will be built (just announced) from Abrera to Terrassa (less than 10kms) to connect two highways. The idea is to build a new orbital line that connect better the 2nd metropolitan cities. (BCN is very policentrical) The project is only build in part, connecting Mataro with Granollers, and this would not be linked to that part, but it will be able to connect better 2 highways. The project has is equivalent in a orbital train line and its a long term project, rather.
8) I would say that that is precisely the part of the train extension necessary to build the orbital line, you know, they have to build maybe only 40% of new tracks as the 60% needed is built now but used in other lines, its hard to explain. Imagine a compass and BCN is the center, then put the other stic of the compass 30km from BCN and draw a semicircle :) Then you have now that some parts of the semicircle are built and some not. The same goes for the highway project.
9) That is 100% clear. The L2 will arrive to the conjunction of the two braches of the L9, that will be the L9 and the L10. The L2 now arriving to Paralel will be unused (or at least much more unused) and the line will turn and connect the L9 and L10 much further south. It is possible that the trains of the L2 can join the L9 tracks and arrive to the airport straight form the city center without a single line change. Anyway, the L2+L9 will connect the airport and the city center quite fast and maximum with one interchange, and maybe zero interchange (that nobody knows in the catalan forum , only engineers seem to know :))

A picture took today! The projection it's just AWESOME! :runaway:
Torre Agbar should be considered as finished building, because they are just doing interior fitout.
These are the works for the hq of SOREA, a division of Aguas de Barcelona (I suppose, at least a "deep throat" in the company told me this). We don't know anything from the project.

Urban Dave September 9th, 2005, 10:35 AM And much more that will come in a few years. There is a development in a city close to Barcelona (in fact, its inside the built continous), Hospitalet del Llobregat, that has aproved some 100-meter towers. And other projects that will be aproved soon, designed by Gerhy or Bofill.

The towers will be the symbol of the new 'city' financial area.
In collaboration with the architect Fermín Vázquez, Toyo Ito has created two buildings with a organic and agile look. The project consists of two 110m high towers. They have been designed almost like complementary sculptures: the transparent tower has a nucleus that is the reflection of the other tower with its red facade.
The first phase of the project to be carried out is the buildng of the tower that will house offices on 23 floors. The second tower will be a 26 floor hotel with a special feature consisting of a revolving floor in the shape of a clover leaf. As the building can turn round, it will be possible to view the airport, the future plaça d'Europa and the Fira de Barcelona.
The two buildings will be joined by a large architectural structure where the new shopping centre and a carpark with more than 700 parking bays will be located. 2009 is the forecasted deadline to finish the building work

The largest Trade Fair complex in Spain and the second largest in Europe.
Ito’s project is part of Barcelona’s Trade Fair extension. With more than 350.000 square metres exhibition space, the city will house the second largest trade fair complex in Europe, after Milan.
In laying the first of the towers’ stones, Joan Clos, said that the Towers and the Fair extension will increase development in the metropolitan area. Clos also pointed out the economic impact and the urban development that the project will bring to l'Hospitalet as well as Barcelona.
