Located in the Sidama Zone 270 km south of Addis Ababa via Debre Zeit, 130 km east of Sodo, 75 km north of Dilla and 1125 km north of Nairobi , as of 2006 Awasa is the capital of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region. Awassa is my hometown and I have heard rumors of it growing very fast these days. I would love to see some recent pics of it. I will try my best to post pics that I find on the internet but if you happen to be in awassa or visit it, please share the pics.
Thank you

abesha April 15th, 2009, 01:42 AM Welcome to the forum Hawassa!
I LOVE that city! I've stayed at the last hotel posted (last 2 pictures). There are only a few rooms but they are very very well-maintained, and very reasonably priced as well.
So many things I love about this city: very clean, very friendly people, very relaxing pace, NO beggars at all. Last time I was there, it was the 3rd or 4th anniversary of my grandma's death, so per tradition, my mother wanted to give some alms to beggars. Well, let me tell you, we drove around town for over half an hour before we finally found one. Yes, ONE. And we weren't even sure he was a beggar so we had to ask him.
It's also pretty liberal. Women were riding motorbikes (or whatever they're called) in high heeled boots and shorts lol.
They have also built a sort of pathway on the edge of the lake.
I'll try to find pics of this city I love.
BUTEMBO21 April 15th, 2009, 01:58 AM I love this city, The lake make it a paradise. It looks like South Eastern congolese city of Kolwezi. And yea, It's very clean.
Adis i great for Business, but this city is where you want live .
BUTEMBO21 April 15th, 2009, 01:59 AM I love the Hotel too. Small hotels are better than the big ones. Easy to maintain, easy to run as well.

The "peninsula" is a beautiful park, and there's a fish market right on the shore.
The local fishermen fry the fish as soon as it's fished and sell it right inside that park. The fish was really delicious.

A poster in the city: it reads in Amharic "Liyunetachin wubetachin new. Wubetachin andinetachin new." It means "our diversity is our beauty, our beauty is our strength." The different ethnic groups pictured are those who live in the SNNP state, of which Awassa is the capital.

African Lion April 16th, 2009, 01:17 AM My friend just came from Hawasa about 3 weeks ago. He grew up there in the 80s and 90s. He loves the scenery of the city and surrounding natural beauty. He said they have some buildings but not much development. He was disappointed by the lack of improvement in living standards and is now a revolutionary.
Ezana May 20th, 2009, 01:36 AM Thanks for the higher quality version of that poster, abesha. That bird in the middle was driving me wild from the small version in Hawassa's post (I was trying to figure out what it was).
Btw, I'd have said "our unity" instead of "our strength" (andinetachin), strictly more correct, but "our strength" is maybe better idiomatically.

lamrof June 13th, 2009, 12:47 PM Awasians have a very good habit of cleanliness. Unlike the dirty messy people of Adisaba, they amaze me how clean they keep their city. Nice.
I was devastated when I saw Adisaba, but Baher Dar and Awasa made up for that Disappointment. I hear Meqele and Dire are nice too. I also liked Debre Zeit.
The rest of Ethiopian cities leave much to be desired. Gonder, Jimma, Nazret, Harar, Adisaba, Dessie, Debre Berhan, etc...

abesha February 9th, 2010, 04:16 PM Whereas sluggish demand in the great economic powers, America and Europe, has hit hotels hard, a lot has gone right for resorts in Ethiopia.
The Managing Director of the Lewi Resort and Spa, Mr. Donald Pool, was happy that the hotel, which is owned by Wendifru Endeshaw, will start providing services in March before a grand opening ceremony on April 3, 2010.
"The hotel demand is rising at this time in Ethiopia. Awassa is currently becoming the country's biggest weekend and holiday destination. The number of overnight stays by foreign and local visitors has gone dramatically up. The resorts are the crowd-pullers," Donald Pool said.
Why tourists are attracted to countries like France, Spain, Italy or the Far East is well understood. For instance, Italy has a number of famous historical sites, plus, it has beautiful beaches, mountains, lakes, and artistic treasures. But what is there in Awassa accounting for a huge increase in hotel room demand?
Donald Pool was quick to give an answer: "We are located right on Lake Awassa. It has a natural beauty. What we can do is keep the lake as it is. Awassa is also the home of different ethnic groups of the south with various cultures. We present all these in one place."
But one problem is that as often in Ethiopia, pollution levels are high. The lake is affected by the expansion of the city and industries. In connection to this, the managing director noted the immensity of the problem. According to him, some industries dump their waste in the lake and visitors also litter around the lake. The industrial pollution is the biggest problem, but he says if we start protecting now it is not too late: "Initial work has already begun. This is partly done by composting food waste and using biodegradable detergents for our laundry. As we are located at the lakeshore we made the practical application in the design during the construction of the four-storey hotel. This will help us make the lake cleaner to a large extent."
He added that though there may be bigger resorts in the area, "my determination is to develop an environmentally-friendly resort with the protected lake. I am confident that we will render unparalleled customer service. Keeping nature as is and maintaining the diverse cultural heritage of the people will surely serve as a means to attract visitors.
"We have to contribute something to the global effort of reversing climate change. Keeping lakes clean, avoiding deforestation and making the earth green is our bounden duty. Towards this goal we are marching."
Plus, he said, the owner Wendifru Endeshaw is extremely progressive in promoting environmental protection.
Donald Pool, who is an American, is also very much devoted to keeping the lake clean. His background explains why: he worked in the hospitality and customer service industry for many years in Oregon.
"Oregon is very environmentally-friendly and a very, very clean state. You really wonder how neat Oregon is. I have that influence," he said.
In their drive to protect the lake, the 43-year-old managing director has already drawn a budgetary provision allocated from money collected from every guest. "By this we don't mean that we request extra pay from them. No, not at all. But we have agreed to spare part of our money for the protection purpose," he said.
Protecting nature is not the work of a certain firm or individual. The cooperation of governmental and non-governmental organisation as well as the public is important. Why would Lewi Resort and SPA try to do it itself? The answer: it wouldn't.
"Our initiative is one of several initiatives carried on to restore Lake Awassa to its pristine beauty. I tell you, we can have a nice resort. If the lake is ruined everything is lost. So I say without the lake we have nothing. In this regard everyone is cooperative. We are part of that bigger project. But by taking the initiative we are trying to accelerate that process," Mr Pool explained.
Mr. Pool has visited a number of African countries. When asked to compare and contrast he said that African services are declining, while Ethiopia is emerging. "Crime rates have gone crazy in most African countries. Once beautiful resorts are not the same as they were before, customer service has declined considerably. In Ethiopia things are improving fast," he said.
He was in Addis Ababa for eight years from 1994-2003. Back then he was working in different hospitality-related services for different organisations. "Access to good services was limited at that time. In a short time the change has been enormous," he said about the progress seen in Addis.
As well as being clear about the resort's approach, Mr. Pool is confident in his management style. "My management style is not simply to give orders, but to work individually with other colleagues to make sure that the employees understand our high level of customer service and quality at Lewi. Our ulterior motive is to transfer nature as it is to future generations," he concluded.

Habab May 6th, 2010, 05:54 PM this village is typical in Ethiopia. They build three or four buildings, post hundreds of pictures from different angles and call it development. This village is a waste of a thread. Ethiopians have a habit of hiding their massive slums till unsuspected tourist visit and find themselves knee deep in fecal matter.

Yoniii December 15th, 2010, 07:18 PM Who is this dude, never heard of him??
Could he be the founder of the town? I'm not sure.
abesha December 15th, 2010, 07:37 PM He was apparently a leader of Sidama Liberation Movement.
The former leader of the Sidama Liberation Movement (SLM), Mr. Woldeamanuel Dubale Hankarso passed away on November 20, 2007 in a London Hospital. He was the leader of the movement since the late 1970s until recently. He lived in exile in Somalia between the late 1970s and 1991 when he came back to Ethiopia to participate in the formation of the transitional government led by EPRDF.
When EPRDF purged out SLM from the transitional government in 1992 Mr. Hankarso sought asylum in Britain and lived there until recently. However, he returned back to Ethiopia a year ago under unclear arrangement with the current government. He went back to Britain because of ill health and passed away there a week ago. His body was sent to Sidama for burial.

Ahadu December 15th, 2010, 10:29 PM Tnx ... interesting. Suprised the government let them build this HUGE monument of a guy they exiled.
They (EPRDF) didn't force him - it was his choice to leave the country. Same thing was happening in the early 90's with OLF. Lencho Leta of OLF, for example, was nominated by Meles Zenawi to lead the transitional government but Lencho refused to be nominated saying that he's got no experience to lead - what Fk was he doing in the parliament anyway....

"When EPRDF purged out SLM from the transitional government in 1992...". key word is 'purge'. I don't believe anyone left the country voluntarily back then.

'Dude'??? ' I can see here how disrespectful you guys are trying to be here. This statue is built for sidama leader (icon), by sidama people @ sidama land. Has nothing to do with immigrant. If I were u guys, I will refrain from any illitrate comment and educate myself about the culture and history about the people I'm immigrated or integrated In to or I will get the F out of their land, as simple as that.
We love and live in harmony with anyone who love and respect us, anyone who's can't learn from their past mistake, it's time for you to hit the road.
Mr. Woldeamanuel Dubale, spent his entire life not for his own comfort and wealth but for the equality, truth and freedom Of sidama people on their God given land, fighting three gov't, that's why even EPRDF let his people to recognize Him and named the street and schools by his name even if they have disagreement with him they know what he stood for is not for his own personal interest.

Yoniii January 28th, 2011, 06:06 PM Awassa was just amazing, my friend took some beautiful landscape photos of the surrounding area's, haile's resort and some other things, I will post them as soon as I get them. There is a lot of road construction going on, the city is growing really fast and it's getting huge amounts of investments. New hotels are popping up everywhere. The locals we've talked with seem to be really proud of their city as well.

Hersh January 31st, 2011, 09:42 PM When you were in Awassa, did you feel a familiar sense of cleanliness and orderliness that you expect in Europe?
It just seems like a city that's superbly well planned, and aesthetically pleasant, especially compared to what you have in Addis where, the roads are dirty, the buildings awkwardly designed, where the sidewalks are uncomfortably narrow or nonexistent, the walls unnecessarily high, and endless other things.
Yoniii February 1st, 2011, 12:05 AM When you were in Awassa, did you feel a familiar sense of cleanliness and orderliness that you expect in Europe?
The developed parts of town, yes. It's well maintained, clean air, well planned wide roads with a proper "zebra's" etc. It felt so nice to get away from Addis for a couple of days to a place like Awassa, I loved it.

Good answer for a good question. I wanted to ask the same. How is the city as a whole, meaning the clean and orderly is more than the dirty and messy part?
If Hawassa is indeed as good as it looks in videos and pics, I wonder where that came from, specially when nearby cities like Nazret and Adisaba are garbage dumps.
Its seems everyone I know around me want to buy/build their dream house in Hawassa. I am thinking to jump on the bandwagon.

There are undeveloped parts with random souks in areas that lacks proper roads etc, I wouldn't call them orderly but the city as a whole seemed clean. The central parts of town looks like the photos, it's definitely more of the "clean and orderly" but remember that it's a small town even though it's growing fast.

$130 is what I paid for an all-inclusive weekend in a well developed Mediterranean resort where labor and the cost of running the business costs more..I wonder who their customers are?....I hate the way businesses in Ethiopia want to get rich overnight..perhaps that is why most are not good at maintaining and sustaining...

Definitely the most popular city in the country. Awassa, for city of that size, does have wonderful night life as well as many more. I lived in both Addis and Awassa, I would rather spend my entire life in Awassa than one day in Addis. You can just go to the lake and enjoy the fresh air or boating.... Besides, the city is clean, very liberal, nice and laid back folks...

I knew him when he was running a coffee/bar business in London and the guy seems reasonable and humble at the same time....he used advice fellow Ethiopians about looking for their roots and investing back home...In fact I wasn't surprised to see him trying to make a deference in his home country..well-done to him.

BET Architects PLC has won a bid to design a major component of an expansion project
Hawassa University will soon undertake. Hawassa University wishes to build a new university grounds including a facility it named Yirgalem Campus, for which it solicited design proposals. The university was aided by the Association of Ethiopian Architects [AEA] to select from seven entries for the three projects; civil engineering laboratory, administration building, and dormitory. The competition resulted in a big win for BET which, partnering with an international firm, has also sealed the deal to design Ethiopian Airlines’ headquarters in February. BET took the largest of the three projects to draw a facility that houses buildings including students’ dormitory. Yohannes Abay came in second, and Sileshi Consult took third place in the competition. “BET Architects won the competition having fulfilled the client’s requirement. BET had proposed a campus development plan, and the dormitory block arrangement had better facilities for both genders; it also made the new design engage well with the existing block,” said Biruk Tefera, secretary of AEA. According to Tesfamariam Teshome, a senior partner at BET Architects, ‘Unity in Diversity’ is a theme the firm undertook to sketch the winning design that consists of dormitory, library, staff and administration office, class rooms, and others. “Individual buildings celebrating their diversity are united by the nature and common characteristics running through all the buildings. The library and other common functions are taken as a focal point to unite students, who come from different ethnic group and regions, both functionally and physically,” says Tesfamariam of the winning conceptual sketch. “Having this purpose, the library block is done in a hybrid form, sharing colors, forms and character from all the buildings around. The site nature characterized by diversified local trees, coffee, and ‘Enset’ [false banana] is intentionally used as a uniting element, embracing buildings and open spaces and also passing through most of the buildings.” The construction project, which BET will supervise as part of the deal, is estimated to cost about 150 million birr with a life time of 24 months. “Now we are awarded the project, it is time to enter into financial negotiations. We will ask for four months to prepare detailed design,” Tesfamariam told Capital on Tuesday. BET is a private firm founded by Tesfamariam and his founding partner Daniel Alemayehu; both are teaching at the architecture school in Addis Ababa University for the last twenty years.
