Bank of America Plaza
Dallas, USA

HEIGHT: 281m/921 feet
FLOORS: 72 floors
COMPLETION: 1985
ARCHITECT: JPJ Architects Inc.

Upon completion in 1985 this 72-story skyscraper instantly achieved a landmark status as the tallest in Dallas and the most recognizable silhouette downtown. The Bank of America Plaza skyscraper is clad in silver reflective glass. At night the skyscraper's lighting feature is amazing; it is outlined by over two miles of radiant, emerald green argon tubing and is seen for miles from around the city and suburbs.

The skyscraper is home to Bank of America which is Texas headquarters and one of the largest banks in the nation. Due to banks changing names or bank mergers the now called Bank of America Plaza skyscraper has the distinction of being renamed more times than any other skyscraper downtown; at least six different names since the project was announced in 1981.

Initially in 1981 this was called Main Center and the development was to be done in phases, it was to include a twin 72-story tower and a high-rise hotel with supporting retail space. The remaining phases were not built as a result of the collapse in the real estate market of the late 1980s.

I love this one. I might be irrational here, but its corners and setbacks appeal to me..especially that neon lighting. I prefer this to the Wells Fargo Plaza.

It was supposed to have a 921 foot twin. It's argon (not neon)
is fine, although there's the bunch that love to hate the
brashness of it. Night lighting on tall buildings has been very
symobolic of the city of Dallas' somewhat isolated prairie location
for seventy years - a type of lit beacon, if you will, has always
been on the big ones.

Lot's of corner offices in those niches - good for tenants. It is 939
feet from the base of the sunken plaza and is the most prominent
piece of glass and steel on Dallas. 8.5.

The structure in a skyline composite:

Nice form and sharp lines. Neon work is suitable and certainly gives it presence.

8.5/10 - Has good height, and I really like the combination of horizontal and vertical setbacks, which moves it "beyond the box." Plus, the facade really dances with the light. and the night lighting is awesome - yes, Dallas does have a very nice night skyline, BTW.
But it does need a better top, and vertical instead of horizontal lines on the facade would help the height even more.

Awesome building! Tall, the argon lighting kicks ass too! i give it a 9 outta 10. I'd love to have this one in the Atlanta skyline!

What is that water in some of the pics? Was that added there in photoshop or does Dallas have a little pond next to downtown?

4/10. I like the setbacks somewhat as it breaks up the box to some degree. But I hate the argon -- it just reeks of something to compensate for mediocre 80's architecture. And ironically, it gives it a dated 80's look -- not in a cool retro way.

For any current and former Texas residents from that era, for some reason I think it should be called the "Visible Changes" Tower, referring to the hair salon popular in Texas during that period with its neon green decor -- haha.

A really nice building. I like the setbacks and the crown, the balance of vertical to horizontal is nice. The building feels large, and I like that. Its way too "asymmetric" for me I cant explain it, because I think asymmetry can be a nice touch, but there is too much there. While I dont rate a building based on its lighting, i do like the lighting here!

The night lighting looks kinda cheesy. That being said I am a personal fan of glass buildings. Dallas is an old looking city and I think that hurts this specific building. Similar to taipei101. Granted that building is kinda goofy anyway. But the point is buildings look better when the surroundings look better

Green was selected because it's the most visible color to the human eye. The designers wanted the tower to be seen for miles and miles.

I absolutely love this building. It looks so.....modern. It's very thin for it's height and the designers had a hard time building it strong enough to take strong winds. A friend of mine used to work on the 68th floor and told me it was scary at times how it sways in the wind.

I do think it's better without the lighting, though. The argon lighting was recently damaged by a thunderstorm and had to be turned off while it was repaired. Here's a pic:

BOA tower is pretty clean to me. An 8.

I hate the sleezy green lighting at night though. Reminds me of some cheesy 90's nightclub. I know its very recognizable to visitors but they should update the buildings look with just the old standard white flood lights. Specially the taper at the top.

it gets point for the glass and the zig zags in the corners.....but it is somewhat plain......the thing i dislike about this building the most is that it sits by itsself at the edge of dt dallas.....but since we're not rating that i give it a 7.5
