Clem October 29th, 2002, 10:17 AM I've been watching it for a while and it looks fantastic. Haven't taken any pictures though, sadly.
silvermb October 29th, 2002, 11:09 AM Clem and others, let there be glass!
http://users.bigpond.net.au/tayser/markspics/crown2.jpg
they've craned the bridge in as well
http://users.bigpond.net.au/tayser/markspics/crown2_1.jpg

I will reserve judgement until we get a little more glass, could go either way.
tayser October 29th, 2002, 11:31 AM hoping it's going to be a similar facade to Crown Towers
had to keep looking at Crown Towers then at that little smidgen to "compare it" not looking identical at this stage, but still hopeful!
tays
chrisaus October 29th, 2002, 11:45 AM the rendering looks pretty bad
hope it turns out well though
southbank it really bulking up
it will be bigger than perth soon
Grollo October 29th, 2002, 01:27 PM I don't know why they use such a crap rendering, even Crown Towers looks crap in that rendering :-) I don't think it will be 90 metres anymore, we should find out a more accurate height figure, probably around 80m looking at that rendering.
Clem October 31st, 2002, 11:53 AM Just some stuff that hasn't been posted.
____________
From www.crownpromenadehotel.com.au (http://www.crownpromenadehotel.com.au):

tayser November 2nd, 2002, 01:17 AM heh that's a great shot, I wish the OMNI people would move the current Crown Hotel Cam position to the left again, so it looks like that ;)
Good angle on Clarendon towers too :D
tays
SteveMelb November 2nd, 2002, 03:27 AM heh, cool! must of been one of those days where the omnicam has been moved by the strong winds! once their view of Port Melbourne was looking at Govt. House!
wouldn't it be cool if you could move the omnicam cameras...

Actually it should be 92m which seems about right and it will just be a bit taller than southbank towers.

Sorry to say this, but it looks as though somebody has modelled the tower on the Perth City Council building in Perth W.A...
It's just taller...
It looks so sixties...
melbman November 4th, 2002, 02:22 PM hey im pretty excited about the second crown tower. but i was just wondering if it will look as good as the first tower?
from the pics it looks as if the second tower will be the first one. wont that look pretty shitty.
just wondering!
:?
Meldon November 4th, 2002, 02:27 PM Looks pretty average from those pic's.
silvermb November 7th, 2002, 03:52 PM i'm actually coming around on the facade. Like Grollo's pic, the darker sections are black glass and the areas in between are a range of greens.

Muse November 10th, 2002, 02:47 AM Crown Promenade's coloured glass cladding and brickwork patterning will make for interesting added featurism.
To be sure, it will be an attractive structure. Similar yet different to compliment the Crown Tower Hotel. This is extremely clever design work happening here!!

Perhaps Crown Promenade will have a 60s retro look about it. Kool! It just won't have the small shades above the windows as the P.C.C. Building has. C.P. will also be a 2000s "smart building".
The Perth City Council Building. 48m at 13 floors. Opened in 1962.

Dorgey November 10th, 2002, 03:03 AM th facade in the building shot looks better then it does in the rendeing.. just with that perth photo..is that a rendering or a photo it looks stange
Muse November 10th, 2002, 07:32 AM Dorgey, get with the program!!
If the Perth City Council Building was completed in 1962, how on earth could it be a rendering!
Anyway, down below is a rendering of 3 of the 7 planned Duxton Plain residential towers in Singapore. All 7 towers are anticipated to be completed by 2007. The lower green 24 floor structure on the right hand side, is looking stangley similar to the model/renderings of the Crown Promenade Hotel. Just wider and without the roof features of C.P..
Gee, C.P is also going to be 24 floors!!!

A-brain December 10th, 2002, 02:15 PM Still at 19 exposed and 20 cored.. probably see another rise soon maybe this week..
Also noticed a couple of the facades glass panels have come off.. One of them I saw last week actually smashed! I wonder if they've had trouble adhesing them or flexing in the wind..
A-brain December 12th, 2002, 06:51 AM Ha.. I was right!
Core rise yesterday so now 20 exposed and 21 in the core.. 4 more floors to be poured!
tayser December 13th, 2002, 02:16 AM I thought the corebox looked a little higher when gawking at it last night :D
not long to go!

lenicrombie December 13th, 2002, 02:30 PM looks cool
silvermb December 21st, 2002, 03:15 PM the facade has got some character, I think it looks great; really sets itself apart from the other towers at Southbank, considering it will be one of the few all glass towers there (for the moment).

Muse December 21st, 2002, 07:36 PM Now that the glass cladding is well underway, as suspected, it WILL compliment the first tower beautifully.
melbman January 2nd, 2003, 03:58 PM I dont think this tower will be as spectacular as the first one.00mel01

DrDan January 22nd, 2003, 12:51 PM has anyone noticed that the other side of the 2nd crown tower (i.e. the side facing the freeway, not the yarra) has a totally different facade pattern? I just noticed it today. It is kind of a grid like pattern between green and white tinged glass.

the building looks alot bigger from the rear than is does from the city.
I heard ages ago that there will be a 'sky bridge' linking the two crown towers. does any body know if this is still going ahear and will it actually be a sky bridge or just an elevated pedestrian bridge? Or will there be one at all?
James.
tayser February 24th, 2003, 01:05 PM ...it's a full blown skybridge connecting the two towers - very similar to the skybridge up the other end that links the car park (where Galatic Circus and the food court is) to the cinema area, it's been there for about........... 4 months now I think ?

A-brain March 3rd, 2003, 11:40 PM Yesterday they were pulling down the core box folks.. so thats it for height for Crown Towers.. at Level 24 as expected ..
What I'm not sure about is whether Level 24 is a full floor or just a small plant box room.. I recall from the diagram there was a small box room at the top, or could have just been the crown sign..
Either way.. as people have mentioned the lower half of the facade is fully done and all polished up it really looks shmick!!
Being the Crown towers they will keep it in good nick.. and I think this is a classic example of a scraper that will look kick ass brand new but look shocking if left to rust and weather over the years..
Dean March 7th, 2003, 04:45 AM It has topped out now with the core box removed and facade work in progress as well as the large podium and skybridge.
The multi coloured glass is looking awesome as well.
Still a long way from completion though.

Aussie Steve April 17th, 2003, 12:06 PM I think this tower is very very ugly, but not as ugly as Central Equity. The design is poor and they could have spent a lot more money on it.
Duff April 18th, 2003, 04:46 AM i dont mind it. the only thing i dont really like is the green glass, i would have prefered a nice rialto shade of blue (like i would on most buildings hehe).
i hope to see something good when crown3 comes along though
DrDan April 19th, 2003, 09:00 AM I like the new tower. It's interesting and works well behind the current development, although doesn't look part of it. I think that's good because I tried to imagine the original design when looking from the train today and I don't think it would have worked as well.

DrDan April 19th, 2003, 11:44 AM Thanks for that Tays - much appreciated.
Looks like they don't have much room to move for the third tower. I guess if they wanted to have something that matched the height (or went taller) than the first tower they should have done it where the second tower is standing now.

J H BOYD GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL
207-229 CITY ROAD and 122-136 KAVANAGH STREET and 41-49 KINGS WAY and 2-26 BALSTON STREET SOUTHBANK
http://www.doi.vic.gov.au/doi/hvolr.nsf/LUDL/H769/$file/1_j_h_boyd_girls_high_school_city_road_south_melbourne_front_view.jpg
What is significant?
The J.H. Boyd Girls High School was constructed in 1884-1885 to the design of the Education Department's Chief Architect Henry Bastow. It opened as State School No 2686, replacing No. 222 St Luke's South Melbourne Church of England School in Clarendon Street, Emerald Hill. In 1929 it was amalgamated with the Eastern Road State School No. 1852. The building was reconstructed in 1930 by W.H. Bolger to become the South Melbourne Girls' School devoted to the training of girls in domestic arts. In 1932 it was renamed the J.H. Boyd Domestic College after its patron, a successful grazier, who bequeathed a large sum of money to establish a school of domestic science so 'that women should be taught to manage a home correctly'. The school occupies a prominent corner site on City Road, and is a two storey brick building with a third storey of one room and entryto a tower. It was closed as a school in 1985 after 100 years of operation. The extant section of the original school is a commanding Tudor Revival design executed in Hawthorn bricks, embellished with bands of cream brick and render mouldings. The Tudor influence is repeated in a castellated parapet and octagonal turret.
How is it significant?
The J.H. Boyd Girls High School is of architectural and historical significance to the State of Victoria.
Why is it significant?
The J.H. Boyd Girls High School is of architectural significance as one of the most ornamental and distinctive of the Education Department schools of the 19th century. It was the only 19th century State School to have a three storey central block, reflecting its prominent location in full view of the railway line from Port Melbourne to Flinders Street. The school's size and style are evidence of the rapid growth in population and wealth in Melbourne's suburbs as a result of post-gold rush consolidation and prosperity. The J.H. Boyd Girls High School is of historical significance as a reminder of earlier philosophies of educational provision, especially for girls. Domestic Arts schools developed in the years during and after WWI, at a time when there was a wider concerted push for "scientific" mothering education. It was considered that mothering skills were not innate and needed to be taught, in the same way that domestic skills needed to be inculcated at school. The school's emphasis on the domestic arts demonstrates the different approach to girls' and boys' education that characterised the school system for much of the 19th and 20th centuries. Less emphasis was placed on academic achievement than on domestication, to produce young women who would find their place in private rather than public life. Nevertheless, these domestic arts schools were the predecessors of the Girls High Schools and, despite the emphasis on domestic skills, they were a means of expanding secondary education to girls at a time when State Governments were reluctant to provide post-primary education.

#35 is on the Victorian Heritage Register. So no demolition there.
What is significant?
</td></tr>
</table>
What's significant? Not much. I can't see it as any really commanding architectural building, other than the fact that it was built in the late 1800s and shows the style of building built in those days. I'm sure if there was a good enough development proposed and enough money on offer the school could be demolished. After all, many schools these days are being converted for other uses (as this one obviously has been/will be) but demolishing it and building something better in its place might be the better option.
Aussie Steve April 20th, 2003, 08:28 AM Well, as far as I know, this is an amazing style of school building, and from memory, the only one of its type in Metro Melbourne and possibly Victoria, hence, that is why its on the Victorian Heritage Register. Even if a "great" proposal does come along for that site, does not mean the historic building can be demolished.
tayser April 20th, 2003, 08:42 AM What's this Southbank Structure plan 1998 A. Steve ?
A roundabout / circus sounds interesting! got any renderings / can you source any ?
cheers

Aussie Steve April 20th, 2003, 08:47 AM Looking at the pics as we speak. They are great and give you some sort of idea as to how they woudl like Southbank to look like, but I need to get the document to work on Tuesday to scan the pics and I will send them to you as soon as I can.
tayser April 20th, 2003, 08:59 AM fantastic
looking forward to it!
tays
Blabbyboy April 20th, 2003, 10:04 AM tays, you're dreaming, mate.
but yes, the potential is there...
more likely, they'll build a theatre or something like that on crown 3, not a tall. and of course the question is also...who owns the other sites?
tayser April 30th, 2003, 05:40 PM bumped so as thread wont get deleted
silvermb May 4th, 2003, 11:31 AM this is it!

Crown 3 is a green site facing Clarendon St and is slated for residential. Min height of 72m and minimum recommended 161m from memory.
I'm the one who started up the talk on the site behind Crown 2. All I said is that Crown 2's rear design seemed to lend itself to linking up with a future tower on the land owned by Crown. The tower would basically face Docklands and would be tall in order to get some views. So dont get too excited about it, maybe in a few years.
kasperluke May 4th, 2003, 11:35 AM Nice pics mb.
That Fire really is bright in the camera isn't it! I have tried to capture them it is quite difficult!
So on that sight there actually is a minimum heighty level? I didn't know there was such a thing!
silvermb May 4th, 2003, 11:40 AM those heights were what Grollo told me way back when
tayser May 4th, 2003, 11:52 AM flammage = cool

silvermb May 22nd, 2003, 02:31 AM oh so close to completion, doesn't scrub up too badly? If only they had built it at its intended height equal to Crown 1.

A-brain May 22nd, 2003, 11:57 AM Top shots silver.. that 2nd last one full frontal with Crown 2 really shows how nice the facade can scrub up ..
Also in the same pic.. check out how they're constructing a steel staircase on the outside of the building all the way up !! Hope they're gonna enclose it.. or maybe thats the new schmick.. have it all exposed..
Aussie Steve May 23rd, 2003, 02:44 AM This is a very ugly and sad building. It does nothing for Southbank and nothing for Crown. Oh well. :(

I think that's a bit harsh. It could have been A LOT worse.

tayser June 9th, 2003, 01:35 PM would it be temporary ??
Grollo June 9th, 2003, 01:55 PM What do you mean you forgot to put in stairs??? :D
I presume these will be clad sooner or later.
Duff June 9th, 2003, 03:16 PM those stairs dont appear in the rendering i dont think
yes i worked out how to use telstra!

MG2 June 9th, 2003, 03:59 PM I have to say guys, i hope they are covered. I walke past there the other day and they don't look pretty. They ruin the look of the tower. I was actually talking to a woman from Crown the other day (she offered me a job as her assistant - she is the manager of VIP events at crown - I'm bloody still at uni though). Anyways, she said the tower would be fit out with a contemporary design. Still a top quality hotel, but more modern inside as oposed to the European granduer of Crown Towers.

homer June 10th, 2003, 03:58 PM I must say it looks much better now that it's almost finished. Hopefully the inside will be nice as well, the internal renderings on the web site look great. It's on track for a November opening!!

tayser July 26th, 2003, 09:02 AM forgot to post this a week ago, they're gradually building up the what-looked-like-to-me temporary walkways ( )

nice to think what it would have looked like had the design been built at its original height equal to Crown 1

Blabbyboy August 19th, 2003, 12:06 PM SHAME that it was meant to be at Crown's height!!! :bleep:
But about those external stairs, my reaction would be:
WTF?!!!!!!! :? I sincerely hope that they cover it up!!! (more glass, please)!
I don't think it's a bad building, compared to so many others...Aussiesteve, I can't believe you think it's that bad!
tayser August 19th, 2003, 12:16 PM love the first pic..... oh wait, where have I seen that before ?
*gets back to browsing Silvermb Co. pics CD* wee :D

chrisaus August 19th, 2003, 12:22 PM hopefully its more affordable than crown 1... might stay there one day:cool:
BraddyBoy September 9th, 2003, 08:42 AM Stayed @ Crown Towers last weekend after the Capri Cocktails D&D Ball..... :) and took some photos of all the buildings surrounding the hotel. Took some photos of some other things as well, but they go in the private collection heh heh :D
Who can host them for me?
Anyone?
kasperluke October 14th, 2003, 01:39 PM This baby is *finished*...well all but...there is furniture inside, plants on the outside i'd say weeks.....if they work there!!

Grollo November 5th, 2003, 03:33 PM This one should be moved to the completed projects forum. I was in the city the other day and very surprised at how good tis tower has turned out. Take a look at it from the north bank of the Yarra, it looks awesome.
Muse November 5th, 2003, 05:13 PM Despite its size, this one beautiful structure.
A-brain November 5th, 2003, 11:29 PM Amazing huh?? only 18 months ago or so we were still panning it from the renders saying it would be one of the worst/most boring designs ever..
But I agree - it's small but very classy ..
Posters are up around town advertising it's opening in December 2003.
Blabbyboy November 18th, 2003, 05:18 AM Saw ads for the hotel on TV!

Another possible site for a third tower is the disused Ultra Tune Service centre on Clarendon Street and the adjacent empty block of land behind Triple S Motors which back on to the West End Carpark are owned by Crown. A site that combined is rather large.
A third tower may only be a pipe dream as Crown seem more interested in building more Car Park Capacity.:bash:
tayser December 25th, 2003, 01:01 PM Well this baby was lit up like it's bigger brother (Chrismassy colours) the other night, it's either open / on the verge of opening :guns1:
it's 4 star, right? (as opposed to Crown Towers being a 5er?)
