Muse January 30th, 2004, 05:55 PM Oh forumers, when will you ever learn? This tall was on the drawing boards in the 50s. You have to understand to put it into context like any other 'classics'.
In context, an 8.5.

Pas January 14th, 2005, 04:01 PM 8/10. This is a classic international style building. I think it would look nicer with some recladding & new paint job. Looks ok from this angle:

defi January 14th, 2005, 04:16 PM Building looks quite dull.
I don't like the international style at all.
Morn May 26th, 2005, 08:26 AM I give it a 3, why, it's not really so bad, but it has an old cheap 60's look that spoils circular key.
CULWULLA May 26th, 2005, 08:30 AM this is a cklassic skyscraper!! AUSTRALIA;S TALLEST BUILDING FOR MOST OF 1960;S. excellent floor plan, very unique. It was first skyscraper in Sydney to surpass the 45m height limit which was enforced since 1912.
Its a great bldg in a great location.
Of course its now HERITAGE LISTED as it richly deserves! so its going to be around forever!
10/10
in its hey day it had a rooftop observatory

Brendan November 29th, 2006, 07:31 AM Far out people, stop saying it's ugly and giving it a 3. It was constructed in the early 1960s so obviously now it is going to look ugly.
In fact if the Empire State Building wasn't so overrated then I'm sure everyone would say "Ugly" "Needs recladding".
It was the best skyscraper when completed in 1962 and is one of, if not the best old building in Australia.
10/10
SYDNEYAHOLIC November 29th, 2006, 07:36 AM It's ok and is a good example for its time and I like the curve in the facade.
5.5/10
hoangduong November 29th, 2006, 07:50 AM 7/10 for a 46 year-old building :wink2:
Avatar November 29th, 2006, 07:57 AM People will hate me for this but I'd bulldoze it and build another Gateway Plaza styled building. AMP is too heavy and bulky for this part of the city and robs the area of openess with its concrety and thick-set appearance.
Muse November 30th, 2006, 02:45 AM More pics @ Emporis - AMP Building (http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=ampbuilding-sydney-australia)...and then click onto "Click here to see more files" underneath the initial 2 pics. 18 pics all up & each & every one can be enlarged for better viewing, so more to be rated on this particular building in this thread :okay:
scottsimmons80 November 30th, 2006, 03:23 AM Sure, why don't we open a thread asking people to rate it, and then tell them they're wrong if we don't agree. Fact of the matter is, it isn't a particularly amazing building, and I think that is reflected in the voting.
I'm a very proud Aussie (and originally from Sydney, to boot), but I don't really like it. But that's just my opinion. If you want to cradle and protect this building from public scrutiny (honesty), then don't ask for it to be rated.
And you can't compare the Empire State to this - not in the same league, my friend.

LoverOfArchitecture August 25th, 2011, 09:59 AM I love the AMP building on Alfred street its curved design is a wonderful reminder of how cool the 60s were both in design and in lifestyle...reminds me of a "Mad men" type of world!!!
The colours are beautiful and seeing it in contrast with the modern Sydney skyline is just magnificent.
WELL DONE SYDNEY for preserving this wonderful building and keeping it the exact way(the exterior)as it was in the 60s...love love love it :-)
please don't ever change it :-)
Nick from Sydney,Australia.
10/10.

I dissagree...i think the AMP building is absolutely beautiful...and the old 60s design makes it look even better...and in contrast to the rest of the city which is predominantly modern..it looks breathtaking...but thats my opinion and i'm entitled to it as u are to yours

its aged very gracefully and is an absolute pleasure to the eye.
