japopian April 22nd, 2009, 01:20 PM I`m just having a laugh with this nothing to take seriously:nuts:
but a nice vision for Ethiopia (and other African countries!) to aspire to.

Gulivar April 22nd, 2009, 02:00 PM Lolz.
abesha April 22nd, 2009, 03:35 PM lol
Not impossible by any means, but we would need to get started like NOW.
Did you make this?
Xusein April 22nd, 2009, 04:45 PM I don't see many things like that happening, at least there, but anything is possible in that time period.
Like abesha just wrote, for this to take place, it would need to start right now, and with the current leadership...yeah. :shifty:
japopian April 22nd, 2009, 04:51 PM yeah I made it instead of writing a report!
Ahmad Rashid Ahmad April 22nd, 2009, 05:30 PM Its not that easy
popa1980 April 22nd, 2009, 08:05 PM This is Africa!
African Lion April 22nd, 2009, 10:06 PM I cant even dream of this in 50 years. Thanks for taking the time to make these renderings. It looks impressive. Japonian, by the way are you "gondere".
arzaranh April 22nd, 2009, 10:15 PM nice fantasy but why is there no line to Harer?
qweads April 23rd, 2009, 05:53 AM Of course it can be done if there was the right leadership and investment from the diaspora to build industry. In fact a greater change can happen than this if there is a lot of effort put into it. A lot of things can done in 50 years so it shouldn't be underestimated, especially in the 21st century.
I don't see why this can't be done unless you believe what the western media tells you about Africa or you have low standards/expectations.
DennisRodman97 April 23rd, 2009, 06:22 AM Africa can get a vision like the one being done in dubai...why should u limit urself low instead of aiming high.
japopian April 23rd, 2009, 07:22 AM nice fantasy but why is there no line to Harer?
i didnt make that map i found it online:lol: but Sheba Rail would eventually pass through Dire Dawa and Harar through to Djibouti. Its hub being Addis ER (EthioRail) Rail Terminal
what do you mean by gondere? from gonder? my mother is from addis ababa.
i dont really speak amharic to well...i can understand by listening but when it comes to speaking and writing..well lets say i can only do that in japanese and english! i cant learn another writing system!!
but this vision IS possible. Ethiopians need to be able to own land first. then agriculture and food production needs to be sorted. then investment in low-tech manufacturing like bicycles and other things like steel components.
MIMIC JAPAN is all i am gonna say. my japanese side is telling my ethiopian side that it needs to follow and learn and it too will become strong like japan:banana:
every little thing helps, such as giving students quality school uniforms to take pride in, and unifying the country through education and nationalism, social ettiquete infomercials, taking an interest in science and the future, the relaxing of religions grip on the way of thinking (im not anti religion i just think that it can do alot of harm in preventing progress), and the relaxation of business regulation etc.

i'm going to tell you the same thing i say about first and second generation americans: you should learn your mother's language. and what do you mean you can't learn another writing system? you know kanji, hiragana and katakana don't you? quit being lazy.
Kenguy April 23rd, 2009, 12:07 PM This is Africa!
:toilet:
Kenguy April 23rd, 2009, 12:08 PM Its not that easy
But it can be done.

that was also a joke which failed to come through in just writing...
my mother is billingual in amharic and english so....I technically do speak my mothers language..
the other thing is if you grow up in Japan, and were born in Japan then Japanese is natural to you. thats not hard. ge`ez seems impossible! japanese really isnt that hard a language that everyone says it is.
its alphabet reminded my mum of when she was in school learning the abugida system
eg: Ka Ki Ke Ku Ko - か き け く こ etc...
アマリニャ語は日本語の方が難しいそうだけどさぁ~ 〔笑)
anyway, yeah i think its possible.

If Addis' sky high housing costs are any indicator, Ethiopia's already booming!
Jamuary October 4th, 2009, 06:19 PM I believe that guy who posted that "vision" will become a master of propaganda soon.
Ras Siyan October 4th, 2009, 10:26 PM Nice, Ethiopia has the potential
Yoniii October 6th, 2009, 12:08 PM Nice, Ethiopia has the potential
True, but THAT will never happend with this current government.
They are taking a different approach, divieding the people by ethnical regions (while a miniority group control all the important government and military positions), which in worst case scenario can fuel hatred and eventually blow out to a civilwar like in South Somalia.
Ethiopians talk about politics and complain about the current government. No one is talking about high speed trains or even sees a bright future.
We need to solve this political mess first, that's taking to much focus.

Soon I will post my recent-historical vision (that could be done today too). I've lurked for a while, I'm kinda familliar with you all!
qweads January 16th, 2010, 01:19 PM Ethiopia should learn how to MANUFACTURE the trucks themselves instead of buying them from somewhere else. We have the natural resources and we certainly have the manpower so why not?
Yoniii January 16th, 2010, 02:00 PM Ethiopia should learn how to MANUFACTURE the trucks themselves instead of buying them from somewhere else. We have the natural resources and we certainly have the manpower so why not?
We do have those things you mentioned. What's missing is the capital and knowledge to manufacture quality trucks like Volvo.
Al-Amoudi is the single biggest foreign investor in Sweden, so it's no suprise that his company chose Volvo.

True but knowledge can easily be acquired nowadays with partnerships and some actual work. The capital could be available if they truly were interested in building their own trucks and once this thing gets going it will be much cheaper to produce trucks here than buying foreign ones in the long-term. Heck, Ethiopia can probably sell them in the future too along with many other things. What's missing in Ethiopia today is the perseverance and confidence to manufacture her own products. We buy foreign trucks, planes etc when there is absolutely no reason to manufacture these things within the country itself with its huge human resource potential.
Besides soon they'll be staring at 1000 volvo trucks so why not use Reverse Engineering on one of them?

Manufacturing is of course the best long-term solution, but Ethiopia is far from being able to produce anything that compares to Volvo trucks. For example, China just recently agreed to buy the production for Saab 9-5 car model for I think it was half a billion dollar, just to be able to get the engineering knowledge, and this is China, the biggest car manufacturing country in the world.
These kind of products have cost several billions of dollars and decades of research and engineering to manufacture.

I don't think the Chinese's primary reason for buying Saab was to get "Engineering knowledge" on how to build a car. China sent a man into orbit for god's sake!

It makes more sense that they bought Saab to get more economic influence and a standing in the western world which is more important.
By the way, the west spent billions of dollars of research for decades to get it right on NEW technology. Ethiopia can do it faster since the technology already exists and has existed for a long time now. Builiding trucks has already been done before and all the Ethiopian engineers have to do is take it apart and see how it works to understand and reproduce the technology.
Once again, confidence in oneself and abilities is the first step to produce "quality" products.
