Most of them are residential buildings and since they only start construction when a certain amount of apartments are sold, they'll not be empty when completed. :)

A real mixed bag here; Coolsingeltoren, Witte Keizer, and Scheepmakerstoren are particular favorites of mine. Queen of the south.... that's the nickname for a little town in Scotland called Dumfries (and the name of their football team)... I'm affraid I don't approved of the design though. Any hope that those white appartment blocks will be demolished or redeveloped?

Raddie
February 15th, 2004, 04:54 PM
Lots of people don't like the three white blocks... though there are no plans to do anything with them (yet). I don't think they're that bad though.

I don't like the impressions of QOTS either but in real life it's very nice and impressive (which I like) in my opinion.

Lots of people like Scheepmakerstoren, which I don't :)

I like the almost completed Waterstadtoren very much...

Bad news! The Coolsingeltower won't be build until 2005/2006, I've removed it from the list.

But maybe the Punttower (Pink Panther) will start construction this summer already, so that's good news.

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/database/buildings/674.jpg

I've also added projects for post-2004. Take a look!

Talisker
February 17th, 2004, 12:55 PM
Bad news then, the Coolsingeltower is one hell of a great deisgn. Whats' the status of the Corsotower? I quite like this one - very New York.... reminds me of the Carnegie Hall tower.

Raddie
February 17th, 2004, 08:31 PM
Corsotower has been approved, it will be build at the same time as the Coolsingeltower I think (the tower in the background on the impression is Coolsingeltower).
By the way, I showed an old impression, the color scheme has been changed, I can't find the new one though... The color has been changed from bright red to a brighter orange color.

Don't expect De Rotterdam this year either... new info says start construction end 2005.

But research shows a lot of companies in Rotterdam need more space. The city always has a strict number of offices/houses they want to build each year. So they might actually build a few big office projects earlier than scheduled. But the Coolsingeltower will be build on the space where a theatre is now, and as the theatre has presales running for projects in november 2004 it won't make space for Coolsingeltower soon...

that's why I don't like rotterdam's architecture. it is so cold, repetetive and unimaginative. simple boxes like that gave a bad name to highrise buildings in the 1960s and 1970s in europe. there is not one world class highrise building in rotterdam. all these buildings could stand anywhere in the world. it's not enough to bend an otherwise ugly box to make it look better. the majority of the residential towers there is nothing but a better version of the 60s and 70s highrise buildings that were built all over europe (the same that are being demolished now everywhere). where is the progress? again, bending a box is not progress.

anyway, nice update. lot's of construction. but only mediocre designs. that's the reason why in all polls about european skyscraper cities no one ever thinks to add rotterdam to the list. and that's a shame...

Raddie
February 23rd, 2004, 06:53 PM
Hmm I agree with you a little bit, but that's generally because most of the scrapers are by dutch architects, most of them like to do things the simple way.
But actually they look nice in it's simplicity.

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/database/buildings/27.jpg

Can't say this is unimaginative

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/database/buildings/25.jpg

Or this

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/database/buildings/24.jpg

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/database/buildings/127.jpg

But the great thing is all the skyscrapers in the city. With Brussels, London and Paris, this is the closest you can get to a real urban metropolis like New York (in Europe). Yes, no Frankfurt.

And yeah a lot of the new towers are also very standard (New Orleans, Montevideo, T-gebouw EUR, Luxortower, I'm sure they will all look great in their simplicity) but there are also some innovative (Jungerhanstower, Bijkorama, Hoog aan de Maas, Ernst and Young....)

But the best thing is that the urban experience will only get better :)

All I hope is some more towers in the 'real' centre, not Kop van Zuid.

Talisker
February 24th, 2004, 11:58 AM
I wouldn't complain about the 'standard' designs in Rotterdam. There are people who'd give their right arm for a basic clone skyscraper design, rather than bulky cascading masses.... just look at the blocks in manchester and leeds - it's almost as if the planners have a fear of building tall slender towers, and always opt for the safe option of a chunky midrise. More significantly, 'standard' designs are proven to produce great skylines, which is what we all want, right?

And this is a brilliant tower BTW:

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/database/buildings/27.jpg

Raddie
February 24th, 2004, 12:42 PM
Seems like this project has been 'internally presented' some time ago, we haven't heard of it for a while but it seems like it's still alive! The talles tower is 250 meters tall  Hopefully the plans haven't changed too much in the meantime.

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/database/buildings/106.jpg

Another project... this one starting march 2005. 70 meters tall I think. I'll update the list some time.

That's bull, because R'dam is mostly placed at position 4, 5 or 6 (after Frankfurt, London, Paris and half of the times in front of Vienna and Warsawa).

And if you think the already built towers Toren op Zuid and the World Port Center etc., the U/C Montevideo and the planned Coolsingeltower, Rotterdam and Jungerhanstower are mediocore buildings, then there is something wrong with you!

Poor people?! No way!

Most residential towers in Rotterdam are built for rich people that want urban living with a nice view. The appartments are usually very big with all luxury and cost at least 250.000 (for the smallest appartments in the lower parts of the towers) and go up to more then 2 million euros (for the huge penthouses).

Scheepmakerstoren has only one appartment per floor. Each appartment has a big balcony and there's a swimmingpool and a sundeck on the roof:

Yeah it's going slow... construction started february 2003.. and it's slowly coming above the ground... compare it to Ernst and Young which was started.. july? august? 2003 and is already topped out...

It is a nice location though :)

Great job dude. That maquette of De Rotterdam looks massive and pretty good , though I don't see the point of reconstructing that buliding at Blaak , it looks good anyway for that part of the city. Montevideo is rising pretty fast now , it should be in the same line with WPC by December if not even taller. So far things are going good for Rotterdam , lot's of construction , current , at many more will be off as well by the end of the year. The main thing however , what Rotterdam really needs fast at this point to improve it's skyline and make it better and bigger is to bulid 180m + buliding. Luxortoren is the answer , however , something is very wrong about this project , every time when the construction needs to start it gets delayed for no reason , if they don't start buliding it by the end of the year , u can rest assure that it will never be built. That's the sad part. The city center needs something glassy and big , not bricks and boxes. Indeed some projects are going so slow but at the same time some are going super fast !? What's the point? Anyway great update and keep it on.

I think it's just not profitable enough to build a tall tower. And the companies have like 40 buildings (for such a small country) throughout the country instead of 1 or 2 big offices. They even have multiple offices in one city.

From streetlevel Rotterdam is looking better and better but they have to look out the skyline isn't going to look extremely dull from distance.

Still I don't think that will happen... this is how skyline Rotterdam will look if all projects go according to plan...

-wasn't there a proposal of the same building with a reflecting pool above the entrance ?
-the location is this on the Blaakhaven project site or is this across the street ? > and is there room to built this ?

Next saturday I'll be in Rotterdam and I want to check the site by myself

Yeah, there was an older proposal but it has been renewed (to this).

The location is situated at the city centre side of the Willemsbrug (it's practically next to it's exit), at the western side. It's called Verlengde Willemsbrug I believe...

One thing I'm really missing is what ever happened with Havana I&II and New Orleans I&II... a while ago things looked pretty good for those projects, and now they're gone? I can't really understand this, who wanted those great buildings not to be built? What good is in not building these beauties? The one who's responsible for that is a real criminal!

Raddie
April 13th, 2004, 09:24 PM
They're just going to be redeveloped.

Good news, there will be 5 instead of 4 towers
Bad news, the towers will be less tall.

I'm not happy about it either because the only really interesting thing about the designs was the height...

Rdam just needs somthing tall... enough midrises! Okay... Montevideo (140 m.) is u/c, Coolsingeltoren is coming up (187 m.)... maybe Corsotower (150 m.) will follow... Hofpleintower is also coming (158 m.) and in a few years 2 x 150 m. New Orleans...

So the new trend will be building 150 m. towers? Just build something tall Rotterdam!!!

Like the Maastower... (225 meter... although there is also a 130 m. variant :()

Allright I took some time and made a few lists...

Rotterdam with all the u-c highrises completed:

1. Delftse Poort 151 m. 1991
2. Montevideo 140 m. 2006
3. Milleniumtower 131 m. 2000
4. World Port Centre 123 m. 2001
5. Erasmus 114 m. 1968
6. Waterstadtoren 109 m. 2004
7. Fortis Blaak 107 m. 1996
8. Weenatoren 106 m. 1990
9. Weenacenter 104 m. 1990
10. Coopvaert 104 m. 2006
11. Hoge Heren I 102 m. 2000
12. Hoge Heren II 102 m. 2000
13. Schielandtoren 101 m. 1996
14. Pegasustoren 98 m. 2002
15. Toren op Zuid 96 m. 2000
16. Robeco 95 m. 1991
17. Hofpoort 95 m. 1976
18. Hoge Erasmus 93 m. 2001
19. Europoint II 93 m. 1975
20. Europoint III 93 m. 1975

Come on Rotterdam, build something taller than the old beauty. Allthough this list shows the impressive skyscraper boom in the start of the 21st century

With all the studies (which have a decent and reasonable chance of being constructed) completed:

1. Maastower 225 m. 2010
2. Coolsingeltower 217 m. (187 without spire) 2008
3. Pscorr 158 m. 2010 m.
4. Jungerhanstower 154 m. 2008
5. Deltse Poort 151 m. 1991
6. Havana 150 m. 2008
7. Corsotower 150 m. 2009
8. New Orleans 150 m. 2008
9. Montevideo 140 m. 2006
10. De Rotterdam 139 m. 2008
11. Hilton extension 135 m. 2009
12. Milenniumtower 131 m. 2000
13. World Port Centre 123 m. 2001
14. Pink Panther 121 m. 2007
15. Erasmus 114 m. 1968
16. Waterstadtower 109 m. 2004
17. Fortis Blaak 107 m. 1996
18. Weenatoren 106 m. 2000
19. Weenacenter 104 m. 2000
20. Coopvaert 104 m. 2006

So as you can see it´s only getting better :drunk: :)

Anyway he's asking if it's finished (because it looks like commieblocks), well offcourse the concrete body isn't completed yet, the facade is a bit dull but the round part where no facade is yet will have a glass facade...

Two weeks ago I finally went to Rotterdam for the first time in about five years and I was utterly surprised by the vibrant feeling that you get when entering Rotterdam from the Central Station. As an Ajax supporter I am not really to say this, but Rotterdam is cool. The city is alive and the skyscrapers surely are very impressive! And especially that Montevideo will be stunning. So go Rotterdam!!

Here's a real big project, taking 18 years time (!!!)

The whole Erasmus Medical Centre is goingto be renewed, the only building to be left in its original state is the 114 m. tall tower

The rest is going to be renovated/demolished. First phase is the construction of a temporary entrance... the small whitebuilding in the picture

Raddie
July 6th, 2004, 03:36 PM
Ch1le, about which ones are you talking in general?

Because Montevideo is a great project in it's type (I don't really like the type, but that's personal), De Coopvaert is just a nice retro block, just a bit standard, Scheepsmakerstoren is again a great tower in it's type (which I don't like either), Ernst and Young looks a bit too normal at the moment, but the round part (which is big, look at the picture above) is going to be filled with greenish glass, depending on the glass this one can become real good. T-gebouw EUR is pretty ugly yes but they are going to do something special with the sides, might save the project. Witte Keizer is again a standard design, I like it though.

Compagnie is just a big block of brown brick, adds a lot of volume to the already impressive area, so it's a big improvement if you like urbanity. Scheepsvaart en Transport college might look like a standard block it the moment, but just look at what they're going to do!

http://www.skyscrapercity.com/database/buildings/57.jpg

I agree with you on VOPAK though, what a horrible design.

You must know almost all towers in Rotterdam are residential, which are a bit more standard than office tower in general. I like the upcoming towers a lot more by the way, like the Coolsingeltower, Corsotower, De Rotterdam, Pschorr, Punttower etc.

Bad news btw, Jungerhanstower is probably canceled.

What?

Brick is so beautiful. Just look at all this Kollhoof towers. My favorite kind of architecture! :)

IMO Rotterdam builds too many commieblock like highrises. They may look good when they are finished but in a few years its like moscow suburbs.

The city needs more Milleniumtower like buildings. Thats one of the best in Europer. A design which will be nice even in hundred years.

I think maybe Rotterdam is building too many things which just don't have the magic. Don't you guys think that it would be better to build just one beautiful, innovating (and high) building each 5 years, than let's say 10 uninspired concrete blocks with brick-strips?
I think the Coolsingel tower will be such a nice tower, why doesn't Rotterdam just wait with all this ugly prefab semi-highrising projects and build a nice high tower like Coolsingel tower, Maastower or Pschorr every once in a while?

Raddie
July 18th, 2004, 06:19 PM
Who are you blaming? You can say what you want but the city rather likes the Coolsingeltower to be build today than tomorrow. The towers that are build now aren't ugly at all I think. Just wait until they are finished, I guess they'll all look good (even T-gebouw EUR with glass sides)

AMS guy
August 5th, 2004, 11:03 AM
Skyrise, Dutch modern architecture, in general, is not bad. Maybe some of the towers look "boring", but they are an example of a typical style not seen often in other parts of Europe, and this makes it special. I've seen recently a program about Rotterdam on French TV. The city was presented like a "good pattern to copy". So I think it's going okay with R'dam ;)

KPN Botersloot should be built in Disneyland
What a disgusting renovation , is this how R'Dam promotes itself as a city of new architecture...on the other side of the Maas the "Compagnie" has exactly tasteless design

This area of Rotterdam will be my favorite when de Punttower and the Scheepmakerstower are ready. Nice towers with different heights. And all of them are great designs imo.

This is the biggest project of all. Connecting The Hague and all those other surrounding cities with Rotterdam in one massive supercity. Randstadrail is the first step. completed in 2006 and totally connected to the Rotterdam underground/subway in 2008.
