This is what i've been waiting for... Sami Vellu getting into trouble with his bosses :) ...
How can he always stay clear of interrogation? What with all the problems that involve his Works Ministry, including the MRR2 and East Coast Highway?
szehoong October 23rd, 2004, 08:05 AM Firm fined RM80m for delay of Matrade building
IPOH: The Works Ministry has fined Peransang International Sdn Bhd RM80mil for the delay in completing the Matrade building in Jalan Duta, Kuala Lumpur.
Its Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said the company was fined RM40mil six months ago and another RM40mil recently.
The contractor, he added, had appealed to the ministry to waive the fine.
“We are not going to entertain it. We will take legal action against it if it does not pay up.
“The ministry is discussing with the Attorney-General’s Chambers on action to be taken against Peransang International including the possibility of revoking its business registration if it fails to complete the building and carry out repairs as required,” he told reporters after a spot check to monitor repair works on the North-South Expressway near Gua Tempurung where a mudslide had occurred recently.
The Matrade building is one of six “problematic” government projects which drew criticism in Parliament last week.
The project was given to Perangsang International to be completed, involving RM167mil.
Construction started in 1994 and the company was supposed to complete the task in 1997.
sugizm October 23rd, 2004, 08:18 AM RM80mil fines.. that basically 50% discount of its total 167mil..
but i guess that's a good move to warn other contractors to be aware of punctuation..3 years project can be delay till 10 years.. punishment deserved!
D_Y2k.2^ October 23rd, 2004, 10:46 AM It's realy amazing to see how 'fast' is this building will complete.10 years is the completion date of a building maybe around 1000m tall!
hypermount October 23rd, 2004, 05:19 PM Another contractor to be blacklisted
News Update by The Star Newsdesk
KUALA LUMPUR: The Government is set to take similar action against yet another contractor after blacklisting the contractor of the Matrade building in Jalan Duta here for sloppy workmanship.
Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said he had directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to submit the name of the contractor to the relevant government agencies to be blacklisted.
Samy Vellu, however, declined to name the contractor or the project concerned, just yet.
He said the contractor had not kept to the contract in completing the project.
"I will visit the project site next week and reveal the name of the contractor," he told reporters after opening the inaugural International Construction Law and Arbitration Conference jointly organised by the Bar Council and the newlyformed Society of Construction Law here today.

baqthier March 5th, 2006, 01:31 AM eh why got progress? are they filling the gap?
James Foong March 5th, 2006, 06:48 PM Currently, rectifying work on the defective arch wall and interior is being done. Thats repairing work already costing RM64million alone. Who is actually paying for it in the end is still a mystery. Matrade so far has undergone cladding, recladding, and repairing. What's next?? As long the gap is there, it will act as a black hole, sucking people money.
Greg May 24th, 2006, 05:29 AM From The Star
KUALA LUMPUR: The Works Ministry plans to bring former board members of Perangsang International Sdn Bhd (PISB) to court for the nine-year delay in completing the Matrade building.
Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said although the company was now defunct, the ministry would not remain silent.
“The ministry will get the opinion of the Attorney-General. Although the company no longer exists, we will go to the court and take action against the directors,” Samy Vellu told reporters after a ceremony to hand over the keys of the Matrade building to International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz, yesterday.
“They cannot just run away and not take responsibility,” he said, adding that construction costs went up by 70% due to the delay.
Work on the building in Jalan Duta began in 1994 and was targeted for completion in 1997.
Due to several delays and the appointment of a new contractor, the original cost of RM167mil ballooned to RM287.5mil, with RM64.8mil spent on repairs.
PISB was a subsidiary company of Kumpulan Hartanah Selangor Bhd (KHSB), an investment company of the Selangor government.
The original contract to PISB was terminated last March and the company ordered to pay late delivery charges of RM41,750 a day for 2,276 days.
Samy Vellu said he had personally investigated the company and its directors and all evidence gathered would be produced in the event of a court hearing.
He disclosed that in 2004, the shares of PISB were sold to Tajuk Modal Sdn Bhd.
The building was finally completed by RotolAMSBumi Technologies Sdn Bhd and Syarikat Pembinaan Anggerik Sdn Bhd together with NSC Mekanikal Fastcoll Corporation Sdn Bhd.
On whether the case would be taken up to the Cabinet, Samy Vellu said: “I feel there is no need as this is part of the work of the ministry, and the ministry has to settle this by itself.”
In her speech earlier, Rafidah expressed regret that her ministry had to bear heavy losses as a result of the delay.
Matrade, apart from having to rent elsewhere, also lost out in terms of opportunity cost.
Total rental earnings forgone from the building’s exhibition space was an estimated RM120mil, the equivalent of building another 24-storey building, she added.
As a client, Rafidah said, she was disappointed and wanted the Works Ministry to not only take action against the former PISB directors but also look into the probability of any irregularities during the tender process.
While waiting for its new building, Matrade rented premises at Wisma Sime Darby and also a small exhibition hall at Wisma PKNS in Jalan Raja Laut, Kuala Lumpur.
Matrade staff members are expected to move into the new office beginning in July.
sc4 May 24th, 2006, 06:38 AM I've seen this building years ago and finally it's completed after such a long standstill. It looks very "Putrajaya-ish". Dun particularly like the design as it looks oversized for its environs.
dengilo May 25th, 2006, 06:46 AM oh my goat!i would put the guys responsible for all the delays behind bars!
