thailand airport link will open on 5 dec .
The Suvarnabhumi Airport Link is an airport rail link under construction from Suvarnabhumi International Airport to the planned City Air Terminal in Makkasan, Bangkok, Thailand.

Construction of the line started in 2005. As of October 2006, the line is 44% complete and is expected to be ready for service in October 2008. A second stage, continuing along the BERTS alignment from Phayathai north to Don Muang (site of Don Muang International Airport), is also planned.

The line will be 28.6 km long and is elevated for most its length, running above existing right-of-way, with a short at-grade connection to the airport. Both non-stop Suvarnabhumi Airport Express services (known informally as the Pink Line) and stopping Suvarnabhumi Airport City Line services (the Red Line) will be operated. Siemens Desiro trainsets, capable of a speed of up to 160 km/h, will be used, with Express journeys taking 15 minutes and Commuter trips 27 minutes.

The first stage line

Bangkokpost Published: 19/04/2009 at 12:00 AM

Bangkok City Hall is preparing to sign a contract with the Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS) to extend its skytrain service from the Taksin Bridge station to the Taksin junction, due to officially open in August.

Bangkok deputy governor Teerachon Manomaiphibul, who oversees the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's (BMA) skytrain project, said negotiations would be held with the BTS about fares and operating fees for three years for the extended 2km route. The junction is located close to the King Taksin Monument, or Wong Wian Yai.

The volume of passengers would be brought into consideration during the talks, said Mr Teerachon, adding the average number of travellers using the extended route would be known within three months, starting from May 15.

The BMA estimates 50,000 commuters a day will use the extended route. Currently, the skytrain has about 400,000 commuters daily, while around 140,000 people use the subway each day

The deputy governor said Krungthep Thanacom would represent the city administration in the talks after approval from the city council on the setting up of its own firm to represent it.

He said the BMA would ask for some fare changes for the extended route. During the tenure of the previous Bangkok governor Apirak Kosayodhin, the minimum fare for the 2km extension was 15 baht. Fares for the whole BTS network range from 15 baht to 40 baht.

The service on the extended route is expected to be officially opened on Aug 12 to mark Her Majesty the Queen's birthday.

Before its official opening, there will be a test run lasting three months, starting from May 15.

Bangkok governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra will lead BMA executives to try out the service on the extended route this Thursday.

I didn't say anything wrong about Thaksin...I was just curious about this great project on whose brainchild. Thaksin is popular here in the Philippines, he visited the country before and I think in our generation, Thaksin is the most popular and well known Thai leader....cheers. fyi: his face appeared several times in our presidential elections in 2004 as an idol of one presidential candidate....so that explains why he is famous even before the coup in Thailand that oust him.

Anyway, as I said, it is so great that BKK has a rail project that connects the city center to the airport. :)

The Bangkok BRT (Bus Rapid Transit System) and Buses of Thaphra.
Last weekend I visited the currently under construction Bangkok BRT system. This BRT system is being built as a cheaper and faster way to deliver BTS style mass transport to other parts of Bangkok. The BRT is being supported by the Bangkok city council.

The BRT will run from Chong Nonsi BTS station in Sathorn to the Mall Thaphra in Thonburi. The route will run south along Narathiwat Ratchanakharin road then turn to the right and operate along Rama 3 road and cross the Rama 3 Bridge and finish in front of the Mall Tha Phra on Ratchadaphisek road in Thonburi.

The construction works on all stations is underway from Chong Nonsi BTS to the eastern foot of the Rama 3 Bridge (Bangkok side). However no construction works have started on the Thonburi side of the Rama 3 Bridge. The lack of work on the Thonburi side is due to major problems with providing a BRT bus lane over the Rama 3 Bridge which is gridlocked at peak times with traffic speeds at 2 kph.

If the BRT lane as planned for is installed over the Rama 3 Bridge it will reduce mixed traffic from 3 lanes to 2 lanes on the bridge and from 2 lanes to 1 lane on the bridge approaches. Also this will mean the 4 lanes of mixed traffic between the Mall Thaphra will be forced to merge into 1 lane to access the Rama 3 Bridge.

If the BRT is pushed through in its current form it will make an already bad traffic situation even worse. It’s already at 2kph average traffic speed at peak hour before BRT. After these works the mixed traffic route will become unusable with journey times increasing from 1 hour to well over 2 hours for a 3 km journey.

However all is not lost with this section of the BRT if the Bangkok City Council could extend the BRT much further west and north of the Mall Tha Phra then car and normal BMTA bus users could transfer well before the Rama 3 Bridge and therefore reducing the negative impacts of the BRT.

Another issue with the BRT is going to be its maximum capacity per hour this is currently unknown as it’s never been tested. If it’s too low the BRT system will not cope with demand. As has occurred in other parts of the world.

The buses used on the BRT will be high floor articulated buses with railway like floor level platform access. Also the buses will be setup so the doors are on the right hand side and not the left as per all other Thai buses. This setup will make the BRT busway exclusive to the BRT buses only. No BMTA buses will be able to use it.

Thus on the congested Thonburi section of the route the every 30 second BMTA bus services will become trapped in even more massive jams making life worse for Thonburi bus users and even creating transport delays as far away as Mahachai city.

The BRT does have some great positives if the problems are worked out. Some of these positives would be a single high frequency rail like mass transport route for Rama 3 road which has poorly planed indirect bus services currently. The new route will offer a high capacity route to cross from Thonburi to Bangkok and connect with the BTS for a traffic free journey saving an hours traveling time at peak.
the bus look like this

Spain - THE OPENING CEREMONY

The Princess Maha Charkri Sirindhorn of Thailand performed the official opening ceremony for Siam Park which took place on the evening of Monday 15th September 2008. Once again the team from siamparktenerife.com followed the event closely.

We arrived at the Park in good time and were clearly able to see that preperations in readiness of the Princess's arrival were well underway. The red carpet had been laid out and VIP's were in place to welcome HRH.

The Princess was greeted by the Parks President Wolfgang Kiessling and the Parks Director Christoph Kiessling before being taken on a guided tour of the Park. The tour was well organised and the Princess appeared to be impressed with what she was seeing.

The tour of the Park ended on the beach, with speaches being made by the Kiessling family, the Princess and other VIP's including Miguel Angel Santos and José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga.

Once the formalities were over, we were able to enjoy an incredible evening of entertainment. Traditional music and dance from Thailand started the celebrations and this was followed by traditional Canarian music and dance.

A pyrotechnic display choreographed to music set the mood perfectly. As the display progressed, a powerful green laser was introduced which looked amazing. The whole display was watched by around 1500 guests and was just incredible to see. Food was being served informally on the beach and the drinks were now beginning to flow.

A large stage area had been set up on the beach and music played on into the night. The band were fabulous and played hits from Kool and the Gang (Celebration, of course!) along with more modern hits from the likes of Amy Winehouse amongst others.

The whole atmosphere was relaxed and everyone had a really great night. Praise goes to all the staff at the Park and of course to the Kiessling family who made this happen. Congratulations and best wishes for the future!
