Nõgesh April 28th, 2009, 08:33 PM Nice! A midrise in such a small place like Narva-Jõesuu.
And it's about time they did something with those ugly commieblock-spas, but imo they should just demolish them and build something smaller and nicer not renovate and make the buildings 3 times larger.
kr!sto April 28th, 2009, 10:38 PM Nice to see some developement in N-Jõesuu, I've heard that it used to be a very very popular place before WW2, don't know much about it's condition now.
matrixmxp April 29th, 2009, 03:20 PM Some years ago i was the in a " hotell" i was not in 21 century, but i felt i was in the 80es.
S.T.A.S. April 29th, 2009, 07:39 PM where u got all this info matrix? what's your source? how can this be built in a town with population of less then 5 thousand?
on the other note they opened a new highrise hotel and spa last year, Meresuu, which has turned out to be very popular and won a few awards already in the newcomer categories! for those of you who do not know, here is the pic:
http://www.karol.ee/puhkusereisid/files/Image/SPA/Meresuu.jpg

matrixmxp May 2nd, 2009, 03:30 PM in 2006 Narva-Jõesuu sold this lot to be build up in 5 years, and i think it will not be build in next 5 years. So sad.

Just some modern commies, nothing special.
If I may ask, what is that great arch. company?
Jarmo K May 9th, 2009, 10:00 PM meeli truu's nord projekt. they've done a couple of good things, they're mostly just about modern corporate architecture, the "whores" of the architectural scene who don't say no to anything.
too bad cause truu in her youth was a fantastic architect...
ErikEst May 17th, 2009, 04:35 PM A new sports arena in Rapla is being built. It's gonna be 4182 m² big, so it is going to be the biggest in Raplamaa.
http://www.rvg.edu.ee/www/lisamaterjalid/spordihoone_v.jpg
Also the Rapla's stone bridge is being renovated, and they are building new pedestrian bridges. I didn't find any pictures of renders or the bridge itself, but there is a video (http://toru.ee/view/621cd67742a5). I don't like the pedestrian bridges. They are going to be way to wide, and they will ruin the scenery.
matrixmxp June 5th, 2009, 02:10 PM http://www.inkodu.ee/userfiles/image/uudised/412/PORT-ARTUR-2.jpg
Today is opened this project in Pärnu. New shopping center.

:ohno: the architecture.
ErikEst June 5th, 2009, 05:07 PM It's is going to be slightly lighter, than it is on this render, so it'll match the school's colour.
Ugly or not, it is well needed. One of the best youth basketball teams in Estonia (Lithuanians, you can laugh now) has been playing in a very small building, which can only have about 30-40spectators. Now the hole town of Rapla can watch their best to kick Lithuanians asses ;) (They have beaten Arvydas Sabonis' Basketball school and osme other good teams, so this sentence is pretty true ;) :D )
kr!sto June 6th, 2009, 11:52 PM Double post.
kr!sto June 6th, 2009, 11:55 PM Võru stadium, with the capacity of 1600, was recently opened. It's a new and modern stadium, sadly, this is the best picture I could find.
http://www.voruspordikeskus.ee/ftp/pildid/PA100011.JPG
Viljandi stadium is also almost finished, only the cover of the tracks need to be painted, you can also see it on the picture. Viljandi was in a big need for a new stadium for years now.

Tin_Can July 7th, 2009, 08:49 PM Has anyone seen this already? Risti Golf & Country Club (don't take it too seriously - it has scam written all over it)
http://www.risticlub.ee/images/Campo-de-Golf-Estonia-A2_bi.png
They plan to build a hotel,400 villas (yes, thats four hundred),restauraunt and full size golf course to Risti (30km from Haapsalu).Looks like a trustworthy project, can I invest some money in it?

kr!sto July 8th, 2009, 05:03 AM Yes, please. Development outside Tallinn is good, this could become a big attraction amongst people from and outside Estonia. :)

end of september :)
Rebasepoiss July 9th, 2009, 09:13 PM At least it looks bigger than Tartu's bus station(read: kiosk)
Vecais Sakarnis July 10th, 2009, 12:30 AM This week will Jõgeva get cornerstone for new busstation that should be ready in september.

Vow, this will be best looking bus station in Baltics! At least I don't know any which could be better looking.
kr!sto July 10th, 2009, 12:50 AM About that golf course.
It all make's sense, I go through Risti very often and the past years, there have been some developement, many artificial lakes have been created and land has been cleaned from trees, this might be true (Tin Can post.)
Tin_Can July 10th, 2009, 02:08 AM ^^ I doubt it.Just read the news, they're still in planning stage and haven't found investors yet.So development u have seen, has probably nothing to do with golf course.

Tin_Can July 10th, 2009, 02:15 PM If you think about the development near the highway, then its too small for a golf course.Just think of Niitvälja golf course which is huge. But then again...I might be wrong :)
ch1le July 11th, 2009, 11:13 AM At least it looks bigger than Tartu's bus station(read: kiosk)
I think Tartu bus station is quite nice.
Eestimees July 11th, 2009, 12:21 PM Omg, my hometown gets a new Bus station, finnaly! Imo the construction works have lasted at least 2months ore so
matrixmxp July 13th, 2009, 02:36 PM Is it the place next to on old building ( i think school ) near to gas station ?
Eestimees July 13th, 2009, 04:05 PM Lähim tankla on olerex ja see on tükk maad edasi, veetorni juures. Pmst. asub see täpselt politseimaja kõrval ( mõtled vist seda koolimaja all )

Second passive building in Estonia at Palamuse.
It will be ready in late october -november.
Eestimees July 21st, 2009, 10:33 AM Avtually seen the construction several times, quite nice. And the location is Excellent! :)

Jarmo K July 23rd, 2009, 01:33 AM here's some text + good renders of the woodland cemetery chapel in viljandi which is still awaiting for finances... http://katkestuste-linn.blogspot.com/2009/07/66-viljandi-metsakalmistu-kabeli.html
i just love the project and i really hope it will be realised, eventually...
matrixmxp July 23rd, 2009, 04:18 PM I adore the cemetery, it is so simple. I like it!
kr!sto August 31st, 2009, 09:09 PM The second "wing" of the Jõgeva bus station will not be built right now because the gas station Olerex that was at first planned there decided not to open their station in the new building.
The bus station will be mainly built of wood and glass. The building cost 4 million kroons and should be fully ready by October 18. On the first floor there will be a waiting area and toilets, on the second floor there will be rooms for the bus drivers.
First plan (gas station on the right side)

Too bad that the second wing will not be built, it doesn't look as good IMO. :ohno:
Tin_Can August 31st, 2009, 09:23 PM Its a shame. It really breaks the overall flow of the building. I wonder if its really so expensive to build a roof bit longer, with or without the gas station?
kr!sto August 31st, 2009, 09:52 PM Well I guess when times are like this they will try to save every penny and so the roof stays like this and I'm guessing it will be like this forever.

Jarmo K September 6th, 2009, 06:33 PM the best projects for arvo pärt concert hall in rakvere will be announced tomorrow.
most of the new complex, including the main hall, will be located in a 1930's church which during soviet regime was reconstructed into a gym.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Liitium/1-3.jpg
original project, the design is by alar kotli.

competition area overview.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Liitium/2-1.jpg
ch1le September 6th, 2009, 07:04 PM what a crap area. Really. But cant wait to see the winning works.
Jarmo K September 6th, 2009, 11:31 PM it REALLY is.
too bad the gen plan of 1930's was not realized as planned... this area would have been nicely built up.
hope to show some competition entries in my blog. the one by danish sea is already on their homepage: http://www.s-e-a.dk/ - they weren't awarded btw.
Jarmo K September 6th, 2009, 11:33 PM altogether 136 projects from 29 countries were submitted... quite a lot, i should say!
Nõgesh September 7th, 2009, 04:07 PM God I hate that big roundabout in the last pic. I always manage to mess something up when my driving school teacher wants me to drive there.
About the project, well, I saw some nice proposals in the local paper, but I think many of them were too urban and expensive for a small town like Rakvere, but let's see which project wins.
matrixmxp September 7th, 2009, 04:28 PM and the awful pink commieblok behind the school near to church :)
Jarmo K September 7th, 2009, 04:51 PM what a disappointment. an unknown estonian group won...
emil urbel second...
third... some foreign group.
and peter cook, YES... THE PETER COOK received honorable mention prize...
ch1le September 8th, 2009, 05:09 PM the 1st prize work is PATHETIC. Shamefully simple work, the jury should be ashamed! The authors used a keyboard /inspired/ element, which covers a large portion of the area, its not abstracted, its blatant, its painfully naive and its bad.
Sad sad, huge oportunity missed for Rakvere.
Nõgesh September 8th, 2009, 06:02 PM Goddamit..
Tin_Can September 8th, 2009, 07:08 PM How about some pics or renders of ,say, first three places?
matrixmxp September 25th, 2009, 11:35 PM It was held a competition for finding the concept for simple minded people village.
I like the second place :
http://www.arhliit.ee/uploads/images/hakara_copy1.jpg
And won this:
http://www.arhliit.ee/uploads/images/qp_planeeringu_yldvaade__copy1.jpg
source Arhiliit :) You can alsou see a little there about Pauluse church, but not so much.
Jarmo K September 26th, 2009, 01:56 AM ^ no, that's not THE winner but ONE of the 3 winners.
yes, 3 winning concepts were chosen which means that a bunch of very different architects have to collaborate to come up with the final project. i don't see how this is possible, even the architects don't seem to know (:
winners were:
qp architects (tõnu laigu, koit ojaliiv, mari rass, asko uukado)
http://www.arhliit.ee/uploads/images/qp_planeeringu_yldvaade__copy1.jpg
r-konsult (yes... unfortunately... irina raud, ain kalberg, erko luhaaru, tarmo õkva)
http://www.arhliit.ee/uploads/images/hakara_copy1.jpg
dimensioon (lembit tork, jürgen lepper, anto savi, margus soonets)
(can't find a picture...)
altogether 8 such villages for people with special needs will be built all around estonia.
kr!sto September 27th, 2009, 12:34 AM original project, the design is by alar kotli.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Liitium/5.jpg
So it really looked like that? Too bad it wasn't/hasn't been restored, it looks very nice. Damn, Estonian architects really had a lot of good plans for the cities and towns during the late 30's but the war ruined it. In Pechory there are still some nice functionalistic buildings that were built during the first republic. Heck, there a lot of them all over the country. You can see that more were planned since many buildings that still exist have a flat wall on the side with no windows or doors.
sorin September 28th, 2009, 10:57 AM I would also like so see the wining projects - all that I found so far: just one exterior image fore every one of the selected proposals.

Finally, some renders...To bad about those two commie's right next to the church.I hope they will be demolished one day.
matrixmxp September 28th, 2009, 01:46 PM Yeah, you can search for them from mithy google :)
Tin_Can September 28th, 2009, 02:08 PM Eeeh,I'm too lazy to google for images :D
kr!sto September 28th, 2009, 02:51 PM Too bad the church won't be restored like it was originally designed, it looked very nice.
Good renders, thanks.

kr!sto October 30th, 2009, 05:12 PM Tehvandi will get a new stadium with a capacity of 4000 people. The building will be ready by the year 2011. The northern tribune will hold 1000 people and the southern tribune with a roof can hold 3000 people. During winter time, the stadium will be used for skiing but in summer time, the football field, basketball fields can be used and also track and field events can be hold.
Sadly, no renders. :(

Boscorelli October 31st, 2009, 09:39 PM ^^
Great idea to have skiing at the stadium in the winter time!
I've never heard of a stadium doing something like that in Sweden.
Require snow of course! ;)

Well Tehvandi used to be a big skii centre and it is now too, but now it will get facilities that can also be used in summer, not only in winter. ;)
kr!sto November 3rd, 2009, 03:42 PM Jõgeva bus station was completed today, the design (although IMO it would look better with the second wing built aswell, you can see the first proposal on the previous page) is good but for 4 million kroon's, there's only seating for 16 people. :? A second wing would've added a lot to the design but it's still definitely better than most public buildings in Estonia.
laurentius November 18th, 2009, 09:48 PM I couldnt find the larger version of the picture Sorin posted from the virumaa teataja web site so I have to ask; Is the church going to be restored to its original use or will it remain in non religious use?
Jarmo K November 20th, 2009, 10:05 PM ^ well, both. it will mainly be used as a concert hall but the paulus congregation (as the owner of the building) would also use it when needed. the building is too big for religious use only...

There were about 35 entrants altogether, and this was the overall winner designed by JVR Arhitekturiburoo from Tallinn. The city is hopeful this will be completed in around 2012-2013.
Rebasepoiss December 26th, 2009, 12:03 PM ^^ Wow, that is pretty cool :)
Tin_Can December 26th, 2009, 02:11 PM Nice project! :) Narva definitely needs more development,considering it's size.
ch1le December 26th, 2009, 07:36 PM Yep, quite nice project.
Sadly, me and my teammates didnt finish our competition entry... But i think we overdid it anyway, atleast compared to the winner.
René Kedus December 26th, 2009, 10:09 PM Kewl!

This is nice! Something similiar will be made in Jelgava near river Lielupe next year. :)
kr!sto December 27th, 2009, 07:37 PM Real nice looking project, Narva needs some development!
I just wish some day they could start rebuilding some parts of the old town, even rebuilding a small part of it would be already something.
Tin_Can January 7th, 2010, 03:06 PM Underground hydroelectric power plant is planned Jõelähtme county, near Tallinn,in a granit quarry. Plant capacity would be 500MW,planned start of construction would be in next year. It needs approval of locals though (which seems unlikely,as it would mean working granit quarry for a few years)
It works on a pumping station principle (pumping water from lower reservoir to upper, when net electricity is cheap & making electricity, when net electricity is expensive)
http://static.epl.ee/pildid/2010/normal/165111.jpg

Interesting idea,let's see,if it gets built :)
ssh January 7th, 2010, 11:33 PM So they expect prices on Nordpool to fluctuate enough to make up for the lost efficiency of turbines as well as the high-price uselessness period? That'll be interesting to see.

Jarmo K January 28th, 2010, 07:40 PM do you know what the jury thought of your project?
ch1le January 28th, 2010, 07:43 PM Thank you for sharing the project.
Well.
First, i Fail to see the reason of the curvy form of the building?
But architecture aside. I think the biggest stumbling block was how you treated the square. In that form it just isnt a functional public space, the road cuts the space into small independant (and useless) parts. And the sunken fountains? Safety risk.
Jarmo K January 28th, 2010, 07:55 PM +
north-facing glass-wall atrium - high heating costs. estonia is on the same latitude as alaska.
and the as the overhead rendering suggests - you've turned the "square" into a hybrid of a crossroad and a ringroad. but the renderings show people walking around and no cars - what's up with that? and these fountains wouldn't work half the year.
hard to understand much of the stuff from the 600px plans / diagrams and no explanatory text in english.
Jarmo K January 28th, 2010, 07:58 PM and the annex would block most winter sun from the neighboring residential building.
and the planned public building's location... would work better if placed on the edge of the square itself. the square as it is now is absolutely out of scale for a town the size of rakvere...
ch1le January 29th, 2010, 10:43 AM http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/1954/crakvere05.jpg
also, seems like you, atleast, architecturally tried to create a grand lobby, well, while outside it seems impressive, the inside is a bit too fragmented and thus - cramped and "hectic".
Jarmo K January 29th, 2010, 04:30 PM damn estonians, never have anything nice to say.
ch1le January 29th, 2010, 06:18 PM Well i think the renders are pretty :)
ArtManDoo February 3rd, 2010, 10:05 AM New project for the beach area near the border between Estonia and Russia on the Narova river:
It's good to see that something is happening around there.
But in my opinion the shape of concrete part doesn't fit into this landscape. It's just too angular, lot's of arrows (bad synergy). Something organic would be better.
S.T.A.S. February 4th, 2010, 08:03 PM Estonia to get a billion-kroon golf club and housing estate
Spanish businessman Javier Ortiz de Artiñanol who is CEO of FTr Consultants and founder of Risti Klubi plans to invest about a billion kroons on developing a golf club and a housing estate in Risti in Läänemaa county. The construction works are scheduled to start this summer.
The 162-hectare area will include residential buildings. "We will develop one-family houses, row houses and apartments for about 750 people. Sales price will be relatively cheap, about 2 million kroons. We will not be able to sell them for 7 million, but Estonians will buy if the price is good."
The Spaniard said that he hoped to start construction works this summer. The whole project would take about five years to complete. He adds that the project has backing from investors and there are no plans to take a loan for the development.
BBN
Sounds good hey, I noticed a few golf clubs emergin recently in the country, although not sure if they're like this one! Anyway good news for Lääne County!
roolhaas February 5th, 2010, 02:27 AM damn estonians, never have anything nice to say.
Hi everybody. When I posted the our proposal I was not expecting "nice" comments, I wanted you to critizice the project and I thank you for doing it in an objective manner.
Let me transcribe an excerpt from our written statement:
"The new annex was designed as a single piece comprised of three main parts: a) circulation lobby – seating areas, b) stage and c) back stage – utilities. In between the old and the new building a space is reserved as part of the public square flowing around the church. By means of this in-between gap a juxtaposition of concepts are made evident. On one side an old, heavy, masculine stone building, on the other side a light, transparent and feminine new building, each representing the time and society that produced them. In order to accentuate the differences the new annex is covered by an sensuous undulating roof that makes the piece more horizontal, in contrast to the two vertical towers of the old church.
Main Concert Hall. 403 seating.
After a careful consideration of the architectural program and the acoustic and space limitations of the St. Paul church, we decided to take the main concert hall out of the church into the new annex. Thus, the new annex is now conceptualized as a piece of architecture with its own character. In order to give the St. Paul church the main hierarchy in the complex, the new annex is designed as a transparent box that let the people see its interior but it has no direct entrance from the plaza. To enter the main concert hall one has to go through the main entrance of St. Paul church into a double height lobby and then turn to the right to the main concert hall. This configuration forces the two buildings to function as one, and the new building will always be dependent of the main piece of the architectural complex: St. Paul church.
The main concert hall building is a transparent insulated glass box that has inside a wooden egg-shaped object. This object is the upper gallery of the hall. The space in-between the wooden egg and the transparent membrane functions as a space buffer and circulation hall to distribute the people coming from the St. Paul church into the building. A central spiral staircase and two piston elevators take the people down to the lower seating, the cloakroom and the restrooms. To exit the building the users do not have to go back to the church, instead a straight exit aisle takes them out to a depressed area of the main public square. At this point they encounter the souvenirs shop. The entrance and the exit are at different levels in order to give the main entrance its proper hierarchy."
Best regards from sunny Mexico.
ch1le February 5th, 2010, 11:29 AM thank you for the excerpt

More upcoming developement in Narva, as the Kreenholm district of the city will be completely changed. The old buildings will be renovated, buildings will be used for living spaces and also for commercial use (mixed use.) The project is viewed as a long-time one, since the plan is quite big. The massive project is going to take 10-30 years, but when finished, it might become the new heart of Narva as it's going to be a whole new district.

come again? why ?
when i was there in late january, the snow covered the remains of the walls that were dug up by archaeologists since ages ago and there was a fence surrounding the site...
Jarmo K April 27th, 2010, 12:02 AM ^ cause it's a rare example of conceptually LOADED architecture. it deals with important questions in this specific context: how to remember without rebuilding, how to avoid disneylandish tackiness while fortrightly referring to a destroyed structure? the project is pure genius done by ingenious architects. plus, the cozy SPACE it will create on town hall square: i think the college with its cantilever will kind of scale down the otherwise big and empty square.
imo mart kalm has written wonderfully about the project here http://paber.ekspress.ee/viewdoc/7DEAC25E761EAB2CC225704F003F6EBE and here http://www.epl.ee/artikkel/420916

kr!sto April 27th, 2010, 12:25 AM At first I didn't like this project, but from the look of these renders, it looks just great! :) I love the mixture of the old facade and the new building in this project. Yeah I was there on the 24th jan. 2010...alrite i see ur point jarmo, however from my amateurish point of view it looks rather average...unless they will rebuild a couple of other old town buildings, then i will be very happy with that area...
S.T.A.S. May 3rd, 2010, 05:14 PM New oil shale plant Enefit 280
http://www.energia.ee/fileadmin/tehnoloogiatoostus/pildid/polevkivitehnoloogia.gif
Eesti Energia together with the international engineering company Outotec has developed a new-generation, sustainable oil shale processing technology called Enefit. The process is environmentally friendly, enhances energy efficiency and ensures compliance with the European Union's environmental regulations.
Eesti Energia Technology Industries is involved in the unit’s manufacturing and engineering, construction and assembly work. Installation of electrics and automation is carried out by subsidiary Eesti Energia Electrotechnics and Automation.
The new oil shale processing plant is to be constructed in Narva, Estonia. It’s operation starts in 2012. The construction costs are around 3 billion kroons.
Not sure how many of you know that Eesti Energia are going to be a public company soon, when it issues IPO on the Tallinn stock exchange. They plan to gain around half a billion euro from this operation
Furthermore, the amount of work the company is planning to undertake in the next 10 years could be worth around 20 billion kroons, hence the reason for IPO. Further finances will come from a loan worth 900 million euro.

Jarmo K May 7th, 2010, 04:40 PM one more 'news' from eastern estonia: the planned hotel in jõhvi is very close to construction. i can't find any renderings but i can assure you it will look very good. the volume might be a bit expressive (like a spread-out palm with 3 fingers or something) but the finishing will be very simple yet elegant. with nealry 100 rooms the hotel will be surprisingly big.

Saw it in person.
And my judgement:
I dont know.
Now the more i think about it the more I know what bugs me about the roof.
The detailing and the massing of the the building (im speaking about the part other then the roof) puts ALOT of emphasis on the separation of the different parts - cafe - toilets - utilities - this is achieved by the physical separation into different functional blocks and by the different facade treatment on the "cutaway" parts. Now, all of this, is nice and logical, functional and pretty.
This is where the roof steps in. Its monolithic, which is the exact opposite of the other parts. This is also reflected in the monolithic material. It hovers and dominates the entire part - but so far so good. The real deal breaker comes with those huge support columns. They jam into the separated parts and ruin the whole. Look at the picture and visualize the entire structure without those columns - BANG! It works brilliantly. Now, i understand those columns are necessary. but.......
The idea of the separation of the building into functional blocks is great. The detailing and execution is great.
The idea of the hovering - all-covering - canopy is great. The detailing is great. The shape is quite good. It differentiates with the functional block.
But those columns just ruin it. And thats it, the idea is still doomed by it.
Now about Sõmeru.
I reallly really REALLY dont know!
The form is awesome, as you would expect from Salto. But the wooden detailing is a bit excessive, the brackets which connect the wooden slats with the building leave huge ugly circular holes in the wood and i see no feasible way to cover them, close up, it makes facade quite ugly. Oh, and you should see the concrete facade of the building. Its not flat. Its actually an undulating U shape. As you can see in this photo: http://static3.nagi.ee/i/p/635/91/158977778259d3_o.jpg Very pretty and quite complex.
now this part: http://static3.nagi.ee/i/p/635/91/15897779fca7cf_o.jpg The cantilever is just a hollow nothing (as far as I could tell). Quite expensive, but overall pretty and needed for the form to work.
and finally http://static3.nagi.ee/i/p/635/91/1589776309ce9e_o.jpg that huge window is facing the south, which means SCORCHING temperatures. They better hire me to plant some trees next to it :), didnt see anyone taking care of the landscape myself.
So there you have it. Ch1le gets a purchase prize in a competition and thinks he knows everything about everything now! But nah :)
Tin_Can July 26th, 2010, 09:06 PM sõmeru community center near the town of rakvere, designed by salto architects. nearly completed:

Wtf? They should have at least used straight wooden beams (looks like cheapest material available) And beam ends near the roof are not covered with anything. It might look good now,but trust me,after 10-15 years this looks like sh*t :ohno:
This is just so wrong!
Eestimees July 26th, 2010, 09:30 PM and the facade sucks and the whole place looks like a kindergarten :ohno:

Dont you just think 5 bolts to hold a wooden plank is a bit excessive !
They should have used just the bottom and top one - would have saved on labour and had less ugly holes to deal with.
About straight or not straight. To be honest, I think its better if they are imperfect, gives it more character and is definitely much cheaper. The rough finish is also cheaper and looks pretty nice. Everything doesnt need to glow :).
I share your worries about its aging ability.

hahaha! I had the exact same impression when i visited it!
Actually the whole situation was quite funny. overall, I still regard this project as good architecture, even though some details are questionable. What I find quite strange though, is how this good architecture pops up in totally bizarre places - sõmeru for example. The surrounding can be regarded as nothing else but nothing!. A backyard. The entire affair reminds me of a twisted version of superstudios "project" SUPERSURFACE. Our countryside seems to be an infinite plane, on which shiny objects are placed :). Actually Jarmo, id love to elaborate on this into the form of an essay or an article, but you know me. I hope we can pick this up behind a bottle of wine some day.

right now i'm thinking if i should waste my time on defending this building or not... but who cares anyway.

Too bad in my opinion! The entire project is rather depressing since the point originally was to reconstruct the börsihoone itself in the hope of reconstructing some of the historical centre of Narva (like what is happening in Dresden right now).
Yes, the building in itself is quite interesting, especially from a conceptual point of view (with the imprint of the old buildning). But in my opinion it would be better to go for a historical reconstruction since the old center of Narva is supposed to be preserved according to the law (if I remeber correctly).

hmm. Im sure people with decent aesthetic taste would rather visit Narva (if they keep getting projects like the Kolledž building) than Dresden.
estlander August 30th, 2010, 02:56 PM sorry, but true, its same problem with russian or greek orthodox churches. concrete new buildings and full of ... and outcome is fully FAKE. That concept is dead. Please, no dead concept to Estonia, only real architecture.
And yes this Narva project is damn good.
P.S. Dont go in parallel to low with that theme (like finnish "mökki" design - thats so another theme).
Tin_Can September 1st, 2010, 12:47 AM Actually,I think johol903 has a point - Narva doesn't have anything major for attracting tourists. Town hall? it's similar to Tartu town hall. Castle? really nice with it's twin in Ivangorod, but would anyone really go there to take just one pic of those two castles? Old Kreenholm textile factory? only locals know about it. Commieblock architecture?
Reconstruction of historic centre might 'fake',but has this stopped reconstruction of old towns in Poland,Germany etc? Historic Narva was unique enough in Northern Europe,so rebuilding parts of it might be justified. Add bits of modern architecture and outcome might be really good. :)

In future we can always to this "old mix new" concept in Narva, e? There is no possibilities to take down crowded sovietblocks filled with angry russians who go in front of russian emmbassy to protest, and later we build there small film pavillion style baroque scene. So lets do just few (up to 10) and rest is commieblocks. And that is a great concept - "progressive eclectic".

Thank you! :)
I do think a reconstruction, even partially, of Narva would be quite beneficial for the city. A reconstruction might be "fake", but if it is done according to original plans and with traditional materials, then the new houses are actually replicas and not "fake" as such.
For Swedes (at least) the town of Narva has an almost mythical status and I hope the city planners in Narva will realise this. Then future generations will get tourists coming to look at both a reconstructed old town and new exciting architecture.
estlander September 9th, 2010, 06:10 PM ^^ yes true, I would like that also, but no money (or we nicely ask from swedes?), end of story. + russians must remove with their commieblocks - overall bureaucratism in Big picture.
And now something from totally other side of mainland - Rohuküla port has been now some time with new look (two soviet blocks removed, new port building and facilities. Project by AAVO JA RIINA RAIG PROJEKT OÜ

P.S. I remember, when I was kid, just few hunderd meters behind that forrest was military airfield for soviet fighters. MIGs sometimes fly so low, just ten or more meters from sea level, sometimes they used for training purpose a Rohuküla-Heltermaa ferry (as target), MIGs from far, marked the ferry and when they came into shootingrange for some seconds, they changed positions or just flyed over ferry as close as possible. That jet-engine noise - never goes away from my memories.

don't you think it's kind of PART of the concept? do you think architects haven't thought of this and imagine the colors to stay like this for decades? of course not, the REAL color of the building will appear after some time of weathering and the building WILL look grey and that is exactly like it should be.
btw, see http://www.archdaily.com/tag/estonia/ (it's nothing special to be featured on this site, everyhing sent will be published. unfortunately only salto of all estonian architects have realized the potential of such free advertisement.)

Heh, I doubt its Part of the concept, just enevitable and good architects, which Salto are, realise this.
Still. I have a little bit hard time digesting the fact that the facade is really complicated and labour intensive. The concrete facade on its own is complicated, add to that the bolts which hold the wooden lattice and you get UGH, angry workers. And still, the part where the lattice connects with the bolt is ugly up close.
Jarmo K October 27th, 2010, 04:16 PM those angry workers must have been happy to have had work at all.

Looks like in close future there won't happen anything,as Jõgeva court building and police station is on hold, because contractor refused the work (F**k,viimasel ajal vägagi tavaliseks muutunud olukord riigi arendusprojektidega  tööst keeldumine või kõige ja kõigi kohtusse kaebamine) And currently new procurement is held for finding another contractor. Obviously, this means that deadline has been moved.

Tin_Can February 14th, 2011, 04:37 PM New shopping centre in Haapsalu. Apparently somewhat notorious hole in the middle of Haapsalu town (on junction of Tallinn & Lihula Highways, right opposite to cemetary) is being built up.
Although original plans foresaw construction of 2-storey department store, then now owners are building single storey shopping centre (with 1 underground parking house level) there with option of expanding it later by building additional floor. Construction works started in autumn and should end in this summer. Nothing spectacular about businesses renting space in future shopping centre though...Rimi & Hesburger
I'm not sure if it's really worth it to waste Haapsalu downtown space for shopping centre, although I admit it - it would be good to have stores with longer opening times in central Haapsalu. Right now most shops close around 9pm and leave only option of visiting Uuemõisa suburb for grocery shopping in late hours.
Oh,and reason why I 'discovered' this project :D They had accident there today, when construction crane collapsed  Thankfully nobody was injured. More about it here (http://www.postimees.ee/?id=388032).

Tin_Can February 19th, 2011, 11:27 PM Jõhvi is having minor 'renaissance' development period. Somehow it's bit similar to Viljandi town development in 1930s. Sadly it also turns Jõhvi into bordertown (it's actually ~50km from border) for many government institution & private enterprises..tbh,title of bordertown should belong to Narva, but right now it seems unlikely that Narva will ever manage to draw similar amount of development projects in any close future.
Eestimees February 19th, 2011, 11:29 PM Whats up with Jõhvi, why so many new buildings and stuff?

Jarmo K March 7th, 2011, 08:47 PM i have a little problem with its logistics... will add a critical comment later. soon i'll show you the project by salto (which was imo logistically better).
Nõgesh March 7th, 2011, 09:03 PM This one looks pretty good! Seems to be quite far from the centre though.
Tin_Can March 7th, 2011, 09:49 PM That's cool! :) Tbh,I'm bit worried if developer is really willing to spend more money on such 'hanging' hotel. Afaik,it's really expensive to build such designs. For example, that hanging part of City Plaza block in Tallinn made it ~1/3 more expensive.
Jarmo K March 8th, 2011, 12:03 AM maybe that explains why they didn't choose koko's project - their cantilever was even longer :P

estlander March 20th, 2011, 10:29 AM that school library building is interesting. A bit japanese feeling. I do like that white ornament with blue background. It so-so...Riigikogu. They should do all valls like that 100 % and windows also with white (a bit like Nordic Hotel Tallinn). But damn that student house is bad. Also these colors make it worse. And ornament is not enough.

Jarmo K March 23rd, 2011, 10:55 PM seems like they're really serious about that project... according to the news tinnie linked the development already has 12 building permissions...
now we'll just have to wait and see if there are enough gullable buyers for this project to evolve from idea to reality...
Jarmo K March 23rd, 2011, 11:09 PM oh, and someone should tell francesco that roof terraces like this have never worked and never will in our conditions...
[B][SIZE="4"]
http://i52.tinypic.com/124kl6f.jpg
pritz07 March 24th, 2011, 02:57 AM they have never worked because they haven't really built any or have they? I dont know any residental building in estonia with roof terrace. I don't see why they would'nt. I have always dreamed of a roof terrace on my apartment building, why not? Snow doesn't ruin everything if you don't let it. there are sauna and gym in my house in communal use, people who use it also clean it, like normal people do. also cleaner cleans it, it can be the same for roof terrace.
Jarmo K March 24th, 2011, 12:11 PM ^ there are some. for example, the brown rotermanni building has a communal roof terrace. there was even vegetation planted on the edges but it died out immediately, and the terrace is rarely used... maybe only during summer months some residents go there to bbq or something... a couple of recent developments (for example http://www.roopa4.ee/ and http://www.tatari30.com/) are also provided with roof terraces, but these are separated from eachother and can be used only by the top-floor residents. maybe when a roof terrace is private, then an estonian might be more willing to spend time there...
actually it would be fun if someone did a little research on the use of roof terraces in estonia.
i personally love the idea of a roof terrace (especially of a communal one for all residents) but functionally speaking i think i'd prefer a very spacious balcony (not like the ones we've used to in estonia...) (and mind you, even balconies are considered highly inappropriate for our climate.)
Rebasepoiss March 24th, 2011, 01:14 PM ^^ I think that's why most of the new projects include balconies with glazing right from the beginning. It protects the balcony from the nasty wind, rain and snow and makes it possible to use more often than only on the warmest days of summertime. If you look at Finnish apartment buildings, for example, most of them have glazed balconies.
Jarmo K March 24th, 2011, 01:19 PM yes, of course, and the 'lasnamäe vernacular' is a good example in this case - it's funny to see how residents have been kind of smarter than architects, and glazed their originally open balconies.
Tin_Can March 24th, 2011, 01:42 PM Glazed balcony might protect from wind, rain & snow, but in summer these turn balconies into small greenhouses. I've actually witnessed several apartments, where such balconies alter overall apartment temperature. In turn, this is kept low by powerful air conditioners (not very eco-friendly solution)
Basically many apartment buildings with balconies are energy wasting and should have had a lot better planned design.
Communal roof terraces are cool :) Btw,are there any roof terraces built on offices or industrial buildings in Estonia? Afaik,it's growingly popular way of reducing buildings CO2 footprint in Europe. Maybe it's used here too?

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4141/4979625665_25d817a541_z.jpg
in Polymer cultural center roof - people cultivate carrots.
But anyway, doing such a roofterrace in middle of green-green-green village near (10 km) Rapla.... good luck! It sure is Francescoland indeed, we have one similar, its called lollide village from 1990ies near Tallinn, so this one is modified export version.
Rebasepoiss March 24th, 2011, 09:42 PM I was really disappointed with Solaris' roof terrace when I visited it last summer. It didn't look like a "roof garden". It was just an ordinary roof with a wooden cover and some plants, not to mention it's really small. Besides, it's actually an extension of the cafe Kommet so it's not a public space either.
I think communal roof terraces could be nice when used on public buildings. A park-like setting on top of Viru Keskus would be awesome. Imagine just sitting there on a sunny day and looking at the skyline :) But I don't think they would work on top of apartment buildings, at least not in our culture space. That also goes for other communal rooms/space. I know only one apartment building in Estonia that uses shared washing machines and dryes in the basement. Communal saunas are a bit more common. In fact there is one in my building as well but I haven't used it once.

wow, They should demolish half of building (all the lower part) I really do like higher part architecture of this building. sry. but all soviet Bravo Sierra is not junk. And there is lot of building left to rebuild it. Soviet time usually schools and hospidals (lately - usually bad scrappy buildings) were builded in manor parks. In beginning of 1940ies soviets used high value manor residents and guesthouses as state communal bigfarms.
sanderk May 26th, 2011, 01:58 PM ^^The point is they are very close to each other. And i think its quite impossible challenge to harmonize 19th century neo-renaissance with soviet Orphanance building.

Tin_Can August 3rd, 2011, 04:12 PM Is Kuressaare becoming new Jõhvi? :D They seems to have awful lot of new projects lately..
About week ago ended competition for TTÜ Kuressaare college's Saaremaa boat building center of competence. New building, located at Rootsi 7,will have ship testing pool, classrooms & laboratories.
Competition with 11 entrants was won by Komissarov Arhitektuur OÜ with their work Vennad (http://www.ttykk.edu.ee/rootsi7/vennad.pdf) (this and all others are .pdf files!)
Komissarov architects work 'Vennad' (transl. Brothers):
http://i54.tinypic.com/ofiqe.jpg
http://i53.tinypic.com/35hhk7k.jpg
http://i54.tinypic.com/s5v8lk.jpg
Second & third place were shared between KOKO's Vaht (http://www.ttykk.edu.ee/rootsi7/vaht.pdf) & Aasoja Projekt's Navis (http://www.ttykk.edu.ee/rootsi7/navis.pdf).
purchase prize went to Kadarik,Tüür Arhitektid and their work Kariibi Mere Piraadid (http://www.ttykk.edu.ee/rootsi7/kariibi_mere_piraadid.pdf) :D
Btw,I got to say that KOKO's work was surprisingly weak. Imho,Kadarik & Tüür duo would have deserved to fight with Aasoja Projekt for second and third place,as third work was considerable stronger, but competition jury criticised it for material selection & over the top connection to existing building.
Tin_Can August 10th, 2011, 05:11 AM And finally Porkuni school, bit south of Rakvere. Cost of the project - over 50 million EEK. Porkuni school is for kids with special needs, hence the high prize tag. School project is by U-Disain OÜ. Size of the school complex - 6497m². Main contractor - Merko Ehitus. Work has started already and school should be completed in 2011.

Tin_Can August 29th, 2011, 05:01 PM Architecture competition for designing Tark Maja (smart house) centre of excellence in Rakvere was won by Alver Arhitektid with their work 'Protees'. Construction of it depends on approval for financing by EAS. If all goes well, then by December it should be clear if this building gets built. Estimated deadline is planned in 2013.
Tark Maja will be located on Lai & Parkali streets in central Rakvere.

Btw,one more good thing about it - although it's partially hidden behind old bank building (this one (http://register.muinas.ee/?menuID=monument&action=view&id=15738)) on Rakvere central square,it will be still visible addition to square.

After heated discussions,Rakvere city council decided to grant co-funding to this project - about 1,2 to 1,5 million euros. EAS still has to grant main funding for the project, but I think it's safe to say that Rakvere 'Tark Maja' has very strong chance of getting built.
