It's a bit odd... but there are presently two films in theatres concerning a confused manchild attempting fo find love and his purpose in life during a summer in 1980s Pittsburgh... though the films are quite different. "Adventureland" is a comedy taking place largely at local amusement park Kennywood... that has generally received warm reviews for its sweetness and nostalgic textures. "The Mysteries of Pittsburgh", however, is a brooding quasi-indie adaptation of Michael Chabon's revered debut novel of the same name... delayed for a couple years... it's taking a thrashing in the critics' circles due to its confusing narrative, jarring departures from the source material, and vacuous performances. Sad... as it could've been a defining film for the city. I haven't seen either... and have no real desire to see either (especially since Mysteries has been universally panned)... but I thought it would make an intriguing introduction to this rather random thread. Not my usual intensive, comprehensive neighborhood profile... just a slice of life here in Pittsburgh... the mysteries that have always spellbound me.

Amazing. I am now convinced the buildings in downtown Pittsburgh, most of the city's neighborhoods and the female Penguins fans are not the only BEAUTIFUL things in Pittsburgh.

I like the picture of the Cathedral of Learning and the statue.

So you were stalking women during this heat wave? Ahh, the college days. I had it great when I was in school; there was a volleyball court for an apartment complex a stone's throw down the street from my house on the corner. Sometimes watching the girls lay out in the sun was just as good as any daytime TV. (My favorite bikini picture is the first one.)

Sweet Set as always! As the mercury reaches the 90 degree mark here, with no relief in sight, I long for Pittsburgh. All the pics are great but this one really jumped out at me:

like many urban photographers on this forum, I enjoy going beyond shots of just buildings... a city is not just buildings... it is its people... and I like to capture how people interact with the city... how they enjoy it... how they pass the time... the viewer can interpret the photos how he/she wants... but it's your problem if you are so sensitive as to find something in this thread uncomfortable... find a more sanitized outlet if photos of urban life trouble you so

I found this thread because it was bumped up, and I think those photos are awesome! As far as the "voyeuristic shots" are concerned, how many times have we all seen photos of women(and men, thank you very much) sunbathing in Central Park in New York, for example? Everygrey is spot on. A city is about people, going about their daily lives. I love when I see photos like these that show people, just being people.

it was not a personal attack...it was an observation... a tightly cropped photo of a sunbathing coed will have a hard time passing itself off as mere observational photography of people using urban space...come on

obviously you are a talented photographer... take youself seriously and make serious compositions...

Wow..great pictures. Pittsburgh looks like it's got a lot of hopping areas. I'm looking forward to visiting the 'burgh this summer. I'm sure it will be great.

As far as voyeuristic shots, couldn't you have included more sun-bathing shirtless boys? I only count one. Your unexamined heterosexism is showing. Otherwise, this was a really great photo essay on a particular slice of the Pitt population.

Great pics:) Love those "Mister Roger's style" neighborhoods with the close-together 2 and 3 story vinyl/wood houses on those lush hills.

Very nice pics. Although I'm a little concerned with the fact that a large portion of your pics are from the southern or eastern part of the city. Brighton Heights would surely interest you. Come to the North Side, my friend. BTW, would you consider allowing others to post pics in this thread? I have some to add if you'd like to see them...

Looked like you got pretty close to my building. I live in Oakland at Craft and Joe Hammer. Can't wait to be back in the 'burgh!!! These photos make me miss it so much!
