It’s a Ski Resort near Canberra. I thought it would be interesting for comparison and when we get into winter.

Wow that's impressive. If anyone could be so kind I'd like to know the formula from fahrenheit to celsius or vice versa. I figure you just divide/times by 3 that's not right.

times the Celcius by 2.7??
so 37.5 degrees x 2.7= 101f. close but no cigar. it should be exactly 100f.

^^ yeah shit a brick...Its just b4 11pm now and its still 36 in Mildura.

it was 37-38 in Melbourne today so it would've been low 40's in Mildura for sure. I know that there are other areas in the country that get just as hot or even hotter and have more sunshine on average per day, but its obvious why they want to build that huge sloar tower their.

This would have to be the worst summer i have expereienced in Melbourne, December was schorching and it was looking all promising for January, but that was more like autumn weather, sunny but only 23 or 25 degrees, then comes February, traditionally the hottest month of the year and we get this rollercoaster ride

TODAY WAS JUST 17 degreesss, thats pathetic but even Melbourne standards, the here is the outlook, its out of control

Thursday- Fine sunny 27

Friday- Fine mild 23

Saturday-Fine hot to very hot 37

Sunday- Cloud increasing 29

Monday- Sunny 26

Tuesday- Sunny 30

Wendsday-Possible shower 28

i mean what is going on i've lived in Melbourne for 19 years and i can never remember a rollercaster like this.

One dead, 200 rescued on Perth beaches
ONE man died and more than 200 people were rescued at Perth beaches, which were packed yesterday as people tried to beat the heat.

The city's beaches attracted thousands of people due to the 36-degree heat but large swells and a low tide created dangerous dumper waves and strong rips.

Surf Lifesaving Western Australia spokesman Grant Trew said more than 200 people were rescued, with many taken to hospital for treatment for broken bones, spinal injuries and cuts and bruises.

A 66-year-old man died at City Beach just after midday, possibly after suffering a heart attack.

Mr Trew said the man was unconscious when pulled from the water and could not be revived.

"The volunteer lifesavers at the surf club, they worked extremely hard to try and revive the deceased gentleman but unfortunately there was nothing they could do," Mr Trew told ABC online

swarm night in the suburbs
http://www.theage.com.au/ffxImage/urlpicture_id_1076779843228_2004/02/15/bugs,0.jpg
The weekend heatwave might not have sparked fires or ended in floods, but it did fill suburban streets with an almost biblical pestilence.

As weather records were broken or equalled and the mercury soared, a swarm of cockchafers descended in their tens of thousands on Cranbourne, in Melbourne's south-east, about 9pm on Saturday.

Resident Ben Cooper said the town centre was hardest hit, as beetles covered pavements and swarmed around lights.

They swarmed on a shopping strip in Lurline Street and the Clyde rodeo site, while roads became hazardous under a glaze of squashed bugs.

"We sometimes get a few bugs around here, but nothing like this," Mr Cooper said.

Senior Constable Phil Watts said the beetles were up to seven centimetres deep at the back door of the Cranbourne police station and forced a nearby takeaway to close. "There were millions upon millions of them. They were everywhere," he said.

Insectarium of Victoria curator Bert Candusio said the beetles, also known as lawn scarabs, bred to very large numbers only in favourable weather.

While the insects basked, Victorians sweltered.

Ouyen, in north-western Victoria, reached 46.6 degrees on Saturday - equalling its previous hottest temperature, achieved on January 31, 1968. Mildura had its hottest February day ever, with 45.6, as did Horsham with 45.

It would have been uncomfortable trying to sleep on Saturday night in the latter two towns, which also recorded their highest February minimums ever. Mildura got no cooler than 30; Horsham 27.

Melbourne reached 40.4 at 5.10pm on Saturday, its hottest summer day since last January. Saturday's overnight temperature dropped to 24.1 about 3am yesterday, the hottest minimum since December 10 when it was 26.4.

Yesterday the temperature reached 31.2 at 12.20pm.

Many Melburnians took to the beach. Alison Reaby and her daughter Grace cooled off at Kerferd Road beach yesterday after a tough Saturday night.

"It was terrible. We just had a fan, no air-conditioning," Ms Reaby said.

If she was under strain, spare a thought for Dmitri and Zinaida Mertchouk, holidaying in Australia from Russia. Also at the beach yesterday, with his grandchildren Lara and Tatyana, Mr Mertchouk said the temperature in his home city of Taganrog was below freezing at this time of year.

Extra demand for electricity caused a blackout to more than 4000 homes on Saturday, mainly in Thomastown, Eltham and Greensborough

EXTENDED OUTLOOK – BoM Today
Sultry conditions should continue over nearly all the state for most of the week with scattered to isolated showers or thunderstorms in most parts as a broad trough remains out in the far southwest of the state. A temporary relief is expected over the southeast corner on Tuesday as a trough moves up the coast. This trough will bring showers and thunderstorms to the south coast today extending up into the Capricornia on Tuesday before weakening. The surface trough over the southwest is expected to deepen on Friday with very hot conditions over southern districts before another temporary change moves into the southeast on Saturday night.

Heat sparks more than 100 fires
UNSEASONAL heat sparked more than 100 fires across the state yesterday, threatening homes and ripping through thousands of hectares of bushland.

Firefighters faced their busiest day of the fire season.
They battled to control blazes in Victoria's north, northwest, the Mallee and Gippsland.

The blazes were fuelled by near record temperatures and hot northerly winds.

More than 200 Country Fire Authority volunteers and two water-bombing helicopters fought a 200ha blaze at Coonooer Bridge, north of St Arnaud. The fire was driven by winds travelling up to 120km/h.

The strong winds also sparked a grass fire in Glenburn, north of Melbourne, and fanned nine private burn-offs out of control near Horsham.

Homeowners in Blue Rock Lake in Gippsland and north of Bairnsdale were put on alert for flying embers when two more fires flared up late yesterday.

"I think people thought it was too late in the year for fires, but the state is so dry and it doesn't take much for them to start up," CFA spokesman Alex Twomey said.

Much of the state yesterday was close to record temperatures for April, with Melbourne's maximum of 32.5C just shy of the 1938 record of 34.9C.

Weather bureau senior forecaster Dean Stewart said the higher-than-average temperatures, combined with high cloud cover and hot northerly wind, were ideal fire conditions.

One suburban fire came within a few hundred metres of private property.

The 20ha bushfire raced though Norton's Park in Wantirna South about 9.40am, causing concerns for an adjoining house.

Fire authorities, who took more than two hours to control the blaze, said a car accident on the park's boundary was the cause.

A spark from a car was believed to have ignited tinder-dry grass along the roadside.

About 65 CFA officers with Parks Victoria and Metropolitan Fire Brigade units battled the blaze.

Helicopters were brought into the attack, helping slow the fire front until ground crews could establish breaks.

Spokesman Chris Wyborn said the wind was a blessing in disguise for firefighters.

"Luckily it was northerly or it would have gone over that hill and headed right towards the houses," he said.

Later in the day near Morwell, a fire forced the closure of the Princes Freeway.

The 10ha fire began about noon, jumping the freeway and forcing police to block the road. It took about an hour to bring under control.

Today is a day of total fire ban in the north-eastern, eastern and central districts, including Melbourne and Geelong.

WINTER starts officially on Tuesday but already the cold has set in.

And spare a thought for Penrhos College Year 10 girls rowing eight, who were out on Canning River early yesterday – as the mercury dipped to 4.9C.

Yesterday's overnight minimum, recorded just before 6am, was the fifth consecutive day the temperature had dropped below 5C – a record for the month of May.

The cold snap started on Tuesday when the overnight minimum was 3.6C, followed by 3.1C on Wednesday and 2.4C on Thursday, before inching up to 4.8C on Friday.

Thursday's 2.4C minimum was the second-coldest May day on record – the coldest came on May 11, 1914, a chilly 1.3C.

By yesterday, Perth had experienced eight days this month with a minimum below 5C.

Melbourne is having an unusually long warm to hot spell for April.

Skeletor
May 11th, 2005, 05:36 AM
Impressive weather over QLD atm, very large amplitude upper trough is giving uplift to a very moist air mass over QLD, being fed into a surface trough from the pacific ocean. I'd expect the rain to increase significantly over the central and SE regions of QLD later today with some excellent falls of up to 100mm likely.

Also the blocking pattern that we are seeing, that is causing warmer temps and very much below average rain for SA/VIC espec, looks to be breaking down slowly and should be almost gone by about May 20th. Perth is certainly about to cop a dose of wet weather with significant fronts to impact on them for the next week.

wowsim

^^^ I bet SEQ is breathing a sigh of relief, God knows what will happen if they have another dry year.... mass evacuations of Brisbane due to lack of water?

Skeletor
May 13th, 2005, 10:05 AM
Yer parts of SE QLD and the Capricorna coast got good falls, Mackay getting over 100mm. Falls were generally lighter down in the SE but still some good numbers.

NSW is copping the best of the rains from this system as a low has deepened off the coast in response to the upper trough that moved in from the west, causing the low to 'bomb' offshore. The mid north coast should see falls well over 150-200mm for the system, and showers are going to continue along the eastern seaboard for up to a week as an upper trough lurks. Cert very wet for them.

Very wet also in the lower SW reaches of WA over the next week, especially sunday. Look out for potential gustnadoes.

Remaining very dry across SA and VIC for at least 1.5 weeks. The only slight respite, a weak upper trough will cross SA on saturday giving scattered showers and possible thunder...but dont expect more than 2-5mm 10mm for the lucky ones, nothing for the unlucky. Farmers are in serious strife.

Right now the temperature here in Brisbane is in the double figures, however that's not to say it isn't bloody cold by normal standards up here! It's 15.5 at the moment (but there is some very chilly wind about); heading for a top today of 18.

I'm one of those weirdos who enjoys winter. Contrary to popular interstate belief, it actually does get kinda chilly here in Brisbane (though not as much as places down south where I grew up obviously), so it allows me to get my fix of cold, crisp weather in the year.

Then there's summer, and who doesn't like summer? :D

SE Qld is usually a very dry region in winter and wet in summer. The rain we are expriencing currently is very heavy and quite tropical like. Its not even cold. Minimums at 17 and maximums of 22. I luv it! Luving how green it is too. I know it is spreading into NSW so i hope everyone down there has the same luck, especially western districts!

Although the rain is quite extensive, most areas aren't getting anywhere near 75mm....

24h to 9am today. (until 11:30)

Brisbane - 11.8 mm (15mm)
Brisbane Aero - 12.4mm (18.6mm)
Ammberly - 4.2 mm (25.4mm)
Redcliffe - 7.6mm (24.2mm)
Coolongata - 49mm (32.4mm)
Miami - 54 (?)

The good new is Tallebudgera creek (with its dam) got over 115mm last night, and has gotten about the same already tonight.

Wivenhoe Dam has had barely anything 30-40mm

Brisbane City - 40mm
Brisbane Ariport - 86mm
Archerfield (Southside) 50mm
Redcliffe (Bayside) 76mm
Gold Coast Seaway 344mm
Coolangatta 360mm HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Orfeo
June 30th, 2005, 01:32 AM
The unfortunate truth is that even with the 369mm the Coolongatta has had just today it still doesn't make up for the low rainfall earlier in the year.

Brisbane amount compared to average = - 364 (692-328)
Coolongatta amount compared to average = - 113.3 (991.7-878.4)

The total rainfall of 512 easily beats the monthly record (308mm) and 369mm thrashes the 143.6mm previous daily record.

Wivenhoe Dam has had barely anything 30-40mm

Wivenhoe has only had 10mm, while Sommerset has had 17mm.

Unlucky for Brisbane's Wivenhoe though. North Pine Dam got a good drenching which will help Pine Rivers, Caboolture and Redcliffe greatly!

I neither said it wasn't heaps or enough - I did say it was a record. However it still doesn't put the GC in the black as far as rainfall is concerned for this half year; it really has been that dry.

Any rain past 9am this morning isn't counted as being in the 6 months of the year, so it doesn't change any calculations that it has poured since then.

Freak snow blankets southern Australia
17:41 AEST Wed Aug 10 2005

Freak snowfalls have hit coastal and low lying areas in Australia's southeast, leaving meteorologists reaching for the record books.

Bitter Antarctic weather blanketed Victoria in the most widespread snow for decades, hit Hobart with its first snowfall in almost 20 years and showered Parliament House in Canberra, and parts of the Blue Mountains and central western NSW, with a series of flurries.

Australia's ski resorts are delighted with the heavy snowfalls, with Thredbo and Perisher Blue in NSW receiving about 25cm of snow overnight, and Victoria's Mt Hotham and Falls Creek about 20cm and 30cm respectively.

But in Tasmania and southern Victoria, snow forced the closure of major highways and other roads that remained closed for much of the day.

The snow was falling as children went to school, but the Department of Education said at least three schools closed in Victoria, with students stranded at a primary school in South Gippsland, which was one of the worst affected areas.

Principal Alistair Hillis said Mirboo North Primary School and Secondary School were sending home students who had walked to school.

But about 120 primary students who travel by bus could not leave safely and would stay overnight at the school if parents did not nominate a friend in town who could take them, he said.

Mr Hillis said the children were "loving it".

"It's a bit like being on a school camp really," he said.

"The main thing is, we are telling parents from outlying areas not to drive in because they are taking their kids from a safe situation into a dangerous one. It is treacherous out there and the visibility is pretty low."

The Bureau of Meteorology said an unusual combination of sufficiently low temperatures combined with the usual water vapour in the air had brought the snow which fell at sea level and on beaches right across southern Victoria.

"I'd have to say it is the most widespread I've seen in my 21 years at the bureau," senior forecaster Scott Williams said.

"It's right through the Mornington Peninsula and into the southern suburbs of Melbourne ... it's right on the beach level.

"On a Victoria-wide scale, it looks set to be the coldest day this winter."

Snow fell along ACT's Brindabella Range and down to as low as 600 metres above sea level, with northern Canberra seeing most of it.

Parliament House received a dusting as did some areas further into the city centre.

Snow flurries drifted across Tasmania's capital around midday but failed to settle, the Bureau of Meteorology said, while snow had been reported as low as 100 metres above sea level at Geeveston, south of Hobart.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued an alert for all roads in southern and mountainous Victoria and elevated Tasmania advising that snowfalls and hail were causing slippery, icy and hazardous conditions.

Police said a school bus slid off the road near Strahan, in the Tasmania's north-west, but no injuries were reported.

Forecasters predict the snow will continue overnight but that the cold snap will pass by the weekend.

How to read the storm map:
The storm map displays cloud-to-ground lightning strikes in south-east Queensland during the past 45 minutes. Each strike, represented by a coloured square, shows the strike age. The strike age is summarised in the legend, with colour graduation on the map showing storm direction. From today's west.

Floods and chilly nights as the weird weather continues
DANIEL EMERSON and JENNIFER ELIOT

WA’s weather turned from unusual to bizarre on Monday evening when the city was bathed in orange light and a bright rainbow arced over the Perth skyline, while farmers in the Eastern Goldfields celebrated the first heavy rains in four years.
Weather Bureau spokesman Brad Santos said the eerie orange glow was caused by the setting sun hitting low-lying rain clouds approaching Perth from the east.
“We get our weather from the east only a fraction of the time and because there was a lot of cloud there to be lit up, it led to those ominouslooking skies,” he said.
Sunlight hitting ice crystals in the clouds was reflected to create the orange glow. Light showers started about 6pm and although Perth received only 2mm of rain up to 9am yesterday, the fall was just enough to create the bright rainbow that accompanied the peculiar light show.
Farmers in the Eastern Goldfields said they could not have received a better start to the year, despite flash floods washing away some gravel roads and air strips. Most gravel roads have been closed between Esperance and Kalgoorlie but farmers facing the prospect of de-stocking land could not be happier.
Kybo Station, 505km east of Kalgoorlie, had the biggest fall — more than 160mm since December 31. Owner Toni Campbell said yesterday 2005 had been the worst year on record and plans were under way to de-stock the property this week.
“The airstrip has been washed out and we haven’t been able to leave the property to check stock, but we couldn’t have had a better start to the year,” she said.
Mundrabilla Station, 600km north of Norseman, had been carting water for six weeks and only had two weeks of water left on the property.
“We were looking at having to buy water or get the stock off,” owner Colin Campbell said. “The dams are now full and feed will pick up over the next couple of weeks, which is a welcome relief after having the Department of Agriculture up here recently looking at drought relief.”
Weather Bureau duty forecaster Chris Godfred said more rain was expected in the region with a risk of thunderstorms this afternoon.
In yet another example of the weird weather, a man almost died of hypothermia at the height of summer as unseasonably low temperatures gripped the Goldfields.
The man, who is in his 60s, was evacuated to Perth by the Royal Flying Doctor Service on Monday evening after collapsing at his Kalgoorlie home. St John Ambulance paramedic Michael Ficko said it was extremely rare to see cases of hypothermia in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
The mercury dropped to 13.7C at Kalgoorlie-Boulder airport yesterday following a 14C day on Monday and Sunday’s minimum of just 10.7C.
Meanwhile, the main rail link between WA and the Eastern States will be reopened this afternoon after flash flooding washed away part of the track at the weekend.
Hundreds of people were stranded after a kilometre-long section of the railway was washed away at Nurina, about 1150km east of Perth, on Saturday, leading to the cancellation of all freight and passenger services.

I've just been up Mt Coot-tha, was very strange. Amazing lightning at first with several electricity boxes exploding upwards as we watched the storm approach from the south, they have this strange green light that flashes upwards when they go. Anyway the rain and wind came over and everthing was suddenly plunged into this thick fog - thick fog lit by lightning. Was very bizzar!!

Its the first time ever in my life this has happen to me but I was outside on my Patio during the height of the strom watching it roll through and all of a sudden a blinding white light was followed immediately by a massive indescribable buzzing sound like something had short circuted in the night sky and then a bright orange light that covered the whole sky and then a blue sky as if it was 12 midday followed by a huge clap of thunder. I shat myself !!!. I couldn't get inside quick enough. The power went out then come on about 10 seconds afterwards. It was a very exciting 15 seconds of my life...................

Just did a quick calculation of last nights Brisbane storm events.

According to ENERGEX there were 17,000 lightning strikes on their network over a four hour period. Remember thats just on their network!!!

That means there were 70.8 lightning strikes per minute (cloud to ground) which equates to 1.18 strikes per second!!!!

Remember this is just Brisbane Metro Area and only on the Energex network!!

That was some spectacular Storm - Love this Summer:D

Yep, official minimum was 33.1C, and was still 36C at 3am. You want hot, you come to Adelaide. That very hot period the other week saw 4 consecutive days over 40C, two of them reached 42C and above, hottest 43.2C, and much hotter over northern suburbs, Edinburgh reaching 44.5C and 44C on two consecutive days.

And to top it off, had a 42C the other day so that made 5 days over 40C in a 7 day week period.

Wow, that's unusual.

The thing about SEQ storms is they are usually intense. Far more intense than your average Darwin storm, though we still get a few big ones.

The Perils of Braving an Aussie Summer

You know you're in an Australian Summer when:

1. The best parking spaces are determined by shade instead of distance.

2. Scalding hot water comes out of both taps.

3. You learn that a seat belt buckle makes a pretty good branding iron.

4. The temperature drops below 35c and you feel a little chilly.

5. You discover that in January and February it is best to steer your car using only two fingers.

6. You discover that you can get 3rd degree sunburn through your car window.

7. You develop a morbid fear of metal car door handles.

8.You break into a lather of sweat within moments of stepping outside your house at 7:30am.

9.Your biggest fear is, "What if I faint and end up lying on the footpath and broil to death?"

10.You realise that road asphalt also has a liquid state.

11. You wear your thongs (flip-flops) right down and into the water at the beach to avoid searing the soles of your feet.

12. You catch a chill from having the aircon full blast while you sleep during the night.

13. You pray that your train will have air-conditioning, and if it doesn't, waiting an extra 15 minutes for one is worth it.

Perhaps it could be the perils of Braving a Brisbane Winter - car doors - ZAP!!! We have a serious static electricity problem in winter here which has left me doing a strange 'earthing' ritual every time I get out of the car.

If you thought it was chilly last night you were right. This taken from Weatherzone.com:

Bitterly cold nights in the east
Tom Saunders, Wed 17:45 EST

A combination of clear skies, light winds and very low humidity is causing temperatures to fall to record low May levels across eastern states. Minimums on Wednesday morning dropped 13 degrees below average in NSW and QLD, 11 below average in SA, 10 below average in VIC and the NT, and 8 below average in TAS. The lowest recorded temperature was -9 at Glen Innes and Woolbrook. Amberley’s low of -3 degrees broke a 65 year May record. Mildura’s low of -2 broke a 60 year May record. Brisbane Airport’s low of 3.9 was a May record and its coldest morning since July 2004. A broad ridge of high pressure will bring similar conditions on Thursday and Friday morning with temperatures forecast to drop more than 10 below average in NSW and QLD, and 9 below in SA. A slight increase in wind and cloud will cause overnight temperatures to rise during the weekend but they will still remain well below average.

It is supposed to be even colder tonight with Ipswich forecast at -2c after a min of -5 last night.

Yeah it happens everynow and then. The apparent temperature (feels like temp) is actually 11c so it feels colder than what it really is. Looks like its set in too so it should hang around for a few days.

Currently:
Temp (AT)
Brisbane Airport 04:00 pm 14.8c - (11.2c)

The good thing about this weather is that the night time minimums wont get down too much more than what it feels like now. Should only get down to about 9-10c overnight.

City's coldest day of year

15jul06
AS Adelaide struggled through its coldest day of the year, farmers generally yesterday celebrated the best rain since early May.

The temperature reached only 12C in Adelaide, the coldest day since July 12 last year. Regional centres struggled through record low temperatures for July. Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Mika Peace said rain was widespread. Most of the cropping belt was expected to receive falls of 10-30ml by Tuesday. SA Farmers chief Jeff Klitscher said crops were expected to respond quickly.

Queensland welshes on winter
Michael Wray

August 04, 2006 12:00am
Article from: The Courier-Mail

IT was just another winter day in southeast Queensland yesterday.

Blue skies, fine and 21C but for two Welsh families on the Gold Coast it may as well have been summer.

The Colwill and Jones families, holidaying for a month in Australia, splashed in the Surfers Paradise shallows, and declared "it's just like a summer's day in Wales".

Alec Colwill, 8, who pushed through the gentle swell, ran to his mother, said the water was a little cold and ran straight back to plough through another wave.

A weather bureau spokesman said daytime temperatures yesterday were about average across most of the southeast. Brisbane reached 22C and it was cooler inland. He said morning temperatures would remain cooler than average but generally fine days could be expected until the weekend.

The Colwill and Jones families said they had been sympathising with those left in Wales, suffering through a "30C heatwave", and would take Queensland winter weather anytime.

Their travels now take them north to Cairns.

New generation weather radar for Brisbane
The second of Australia's new generation weather radars will be opened today at Mt Stapylton, between Brisbane City and the Gold Coast, said the Hon Greg Hunt MP, Parliamentary Secretary with Ministerial responsibility for the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.

The high resolution Doppler radar has been constructed as part of the Federal Government's five-year $62 million radar upgrade project, announced during the 2003-04 Budget.

"The new radar is ideally positioned to monitor weather across the Brisbane area and Gold Coast, and will serve as the premier radar for Greater Brisbane and most of Southeast Queensland," said Mr Hunt.

"It also has an excellent view to the north as far as Tin Can Bay, and southward to Evans Head (NSW), and provides coverage of the inland areas of Stanthorpe, Karara, Dalby and Kingaroy, as well as of Casino and Tenterfield in northern NSW," he said.

"The new radar will provide an important boost for local weather services and is a vital tool for providing high quality forecast and warning services to southeast Queensland and northern NSW.

"The public will have easy access to the data via the Bureau's web site, where radar images will be displayed at four times the resolution of other images, and updated every ten minutes.

"I congratulate David Jull for his commitment to the project and to weather services for southeast Queensland," said Mr Hunt.

Mr David Jull, Federal Member for Fadden, said the state-of-the-art radar has Doppler capability, enabling forecasters to "see" the wind flow and the rainfall intensity associated with weather systems.

"This information can provide valuable clues about the potential severity of thunderstorms and other hazardous weather affecting Greater Brisbane and its surrounds," said Mr Jull.

"Forecasters will use this data to provide more effective short term forecasts and warnings of severe weather, such as large hailstones, damaging winds and tornadoes," he said.

Other expected ongoing community benefits include

Improved techniques for assessing rainfall intensity, leading to more accurate short-term forecasts of heavy rain;
Better monitoring of rainfall across southeast Queensland river catchments, for use in flood warning operations and water management; and
Better tracking of the location and strength of wind changes, for the benefit of mariners, aviators and fire agencies.
Imagery from the Bureau's network of weather radars is freely available on the Bureau web site www.bom.gov.au, consistently rated one of Australia's most heavily accessed web sites.

Adelaides temp average max/min:

Aug:16.5/8.2

Melbourne's max/min average:

13.4, hah.

I wish it was 4, 3.4 and 4.9 respectively.

cities are far more interesting when the weather is diverse. Not that Melbourne doesn't have a claim there, we just get half-arsed winters which are neither here nor there by world standards.

Strong Winds cause havoc around Adelaide and around the state

Strong winds cause havoc
MATT WILLIAMS and CARA JENKIN

August 16, 2006 03:20pm
Article from: The Advertiser

STRONG winds and high temperatures today caused widespread chaos across the state, with the emergency services responding to dozens of calls about property damage.

Fallen trees, damaged roofs and power cuts were the most common reason for the call-outs.

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded wind gusts of up to 95km/h on Yorke Peninsula, with the strongest winds in the metropolitan area recorded at Edinburgh Airport.

The city reached its maximum temperature of 25.2 degrees at 1pm.

A bureau spokesman said while the weather conditions were unusual for August, they did not break any records.

“The highest ever maximum for August was 27.8 degrees in 1982 so we were still a couple of degrees off that,” he said.

“But it has been more like a spring day than a winter one.”

btw in the last 5-6 hours it has been bucketing down in Adelaide :D

The BoM doesn't use those as the averages they compare current stats with anymore. They use a set of data that is from the last 30 years or so, don't know about Adelaide, but for Melb you can add about .5 of a degree to the winter average highs...Not that it counts for much.....

It was on the news today that Queensland will have extremely rainy summer this year. BTW, how exactly does that "drought" look like? Can someone post a photo how landscape around Brisbane looks like currently.

Lets hope it's like this just this year. But don't worry too much, even New Zealand had droughts. It just happens on crappy years.

I don't need to talk about Adelaide. Landscape here looks like desert. This is how it usually looks like near Adelaide at this time of the year:

Actually you're right (except the dickhead part). Last weekend I finally got a chance to get out of the city and landscape around Adelaide is extremely green.
Must be just due to my daily commuting on Grange Road which looks like crap at any time of the year I guess. And hills always get much more rain than Adelaide.

It's not a drought breaking but it has started a slow death of drought in that part of the country. It's been pretty much quite good week on the east coast with more to come.
