View Full Version : Assumption Cathedral and the Oriental Plaza
Chad January 31st, 2004, 06:00 AM Assumtion Cathedral :
Built in 1910, primarily by the French community, Assumption Cathedral sits in a small square isolated from the main streets. The outside is a rather simple romanesque facade which reveals a very rich rococo interior.

Chad January 31st, 2004, 06:04 AM Oriental Plaza
On the other side of Soi Oriental from the EAC is the world-renowned Oriental Hotel. The hotel was originally built in 1876, but its place in history is largely due to the Sarkies Brothers who acquired it and rebuilt the hotel in 1887 to bring it up to the standard of their other hotel properties -- the E&O in Penang and Raffles in Singapore. Two towers were added in the 20th century, which unfortunately detract a lot from the hotel's charm, but apparently not enough to stop it being voted the world's best hotel year after year. The Oriental Plaza shopping arcade lies north of the hotel's parking garage. Its of the same era as the hotel and the EAC buildings, and is worth a look.

Chad May 3rd, 2004, 03:45 AM Bangrak Fire Station is part of the "Roi chak Sam" complex which now sold to Mr. Charoen to renovate and open as a 6-star Boutique Hotel (Which I believes they will hire Renessance Group)

Chad May 3rd, 2004, 01:43 PM BTW : The Oriental plaza, before it was sold to Mr. Charoen....It was named as "East Asiatics Thailand building", I'm sure most of you have heard of that...;)

I think we should do something to make the riverside looks better , what about the river walkways and park projects??
Chad July 21st, 2004, 05:31 PM The walk way has already been open for years...:)
Wisarut July 21st, 2004, 06:05 PM You should NEVER forghet that Bangrak Fire Station (the old Custom House) has been designated as "Ancient Building" (Boran Sathan) by Fine Arts Dept. Therefore, Mr Chaoen is NOT supposed to demolish the building. Same can be said to the Phyasathon House (the former Russian Embassy) opposite to Sathon Thani Building.

There are 2 bidding groups to oporate the property.
one is Mr. Charoen TCC Land, which will brings Reneissance Hotel in.
Another is The Natural Park, which will open the Amanpuri Riverside Boutique there.
yet, now at the recent time...I think Natural Park seems closer to wins the bidding most.

First Post and telegraph office - October 21, 2004
Nils writes: Did you notice there has been a new building downstream of Saphan Phut (Memorial Bridge) for some time? It is directly adjacent to Phra Pokklao Bridge.
It has a historical style reminiscent of the Rama V era, is quite tall and very slim. You can see it looming behind the trees when passing on an express boat on the river. But I cannot remember ever seeing anything there before, and it looks very new, so I went there one weekend to find out.
The structure itself is finished, but the gardening activities around it seem having been abandoned.... many of the flower pots are empty, some trees have toppled. People living under the bridge were using the space at the backside for an afternoon game of takraw.
It has a (functioning) clock in its tower and a Thai flag on top, but there is nothing inside the building. I also wondered how to go up to the second floor, as I could not see any staircase, neither outside nor inside.
The plate in front of the entrance says: "This building was constructed in the style of a 'front building' - The first (post and) telegraph office in Thailand, BE 2426 [1883 AD] - For purposes of conservation. Construction carried out by the Department of Public Works and Town and Country Planning, Ministry of Interior, BE 2547 [2004 AD]."
Post and Telegraph Museum - Historic post office building replaced at foot of bridge - Bangkok Post, June 27, 2004
Bangkok had to sacrifice one of its most charming architectural structures, the Post and Telegram Office, with the 1981 construction of the Somdej Phra Pokklao Bridge to ease traffic congestion in Phra Nakhon's Klong Ong-Ang area.
Today a new building, on a much smaller scale, has replaced the old one at the foot of the bridge on the Phra Nakhon side.
Only the facade of the old building has been kept by the new structure, painted light yellow and white _ the same colours of the old renaissance-style structure which had graced the Chao Phraya River since 1883, during the reign of King Chulalongkorn...
