no pics / renderings?
I guess we'll find them on portal site if it's finished, then we can post the pics here.
I've read on other forums there also will be a webcam for sure.

well.... at least it's unique

I like it.
I'm, not sure if it's true, but I heard it's supposed to be from the same architect that designed the new Tivoli. The company is agn, which is the same.

Ps: @ Sercan wouldn't it make more sense merging the thread of the proposed Coface Arena with the Germany - arena and stadium development news thread? Most new stadia there are very comparable, like Dresden, the Bay Arena, the new Tivoli etc. I know it's over 30k but these other mentioned stadia are all above 30k as well and in the same category of new 30k stadia in Germany. I believe it would be nicer having all these stadia together in one thread than separated. And if you make an extra thread for each of those 30k+ stadia, the germany development thread will be almost empty.

Don't know. We have to ask the thread starter :)

there are lots of other stadiums(-30k) under construction in germany.

coface-arena.de is online, capacity is 33,500.

where will be the arena ??? on the same place as old??

sibyl-vane
June 8th, 2009, 02:11 AM
no, it will be built on an entirely new place. the old stadium will be used for the second and the youth teams. probably with a lower capacity than now, as many of the stands are only temporary.

This stadium kind of reminds me of the stadium that Arsenal played on before, except some parts have 2 tiers.

Yeah, but Arsenal deserve to play on the emirates stadium, as they are a strong football team.

Coface Arena is a multi-use stadium in Mainz, Germany, that is currently under construction. Once completed in 2010, it will be used for football matches and will host the home matches of the German Bundesliga side 1. FSV Mainz 05. The stadium will have a capacity of 33,500 people and will replace their current stadium Stadion am Bruchweg. The architecture of the new stadium will resemble the design of traditional English football stadiums with their high stands.

When I look at the parking concept and the site I get the impression the traffic to and from this stadium is likely to turn out being a complete disaster.
Only 600 parkinglots for the VIPs right next to the stadium
(The new Tivoli has more that two times as many right next to the stadium)
4000 on the university campusa about 10 minutes walking distance from the stadium.
(The new Tivoli has all of its more than 6700 parking spaces within that walking distance)
and another 2500 with a shuttle bus service.
The new Tivoli is within a very comfortable walking distance of the city center, the Bruchwegstadion in the middle of nowhere.
I believe the traffic might indeed be a very serious problem with this concept.Building a stadium ind the middle of nowhere without providing a reasonable amount of closeby parking is in my opinion pretty insane. To me it looks like the city building the stadium just makes a concept that barely meets the legal requirements without really spending any money and not wasting the slightest bit of a thought on how practical all this is.
This location simply really requires more parking areas. They didn't even plan a multystorey car park like we built in Aachen to provide more parking space (sadly for the price of 11mio€). They didn't even buy more land to put cars on either. And when they'll have a match on monday or friday evenings or under the week like tuesdays or wednesdays at 17:30h, plus about one hour earlier for the fans to comfortably get to the stadium before the start of the game which would be around 16:30h, then the university surely still uses nearly all or at least most of their 4000 parkingspaces on the campus, the whole concept is going to be a disaster. Then there are basically only 600 parkinglots at the stadium, all the rest of the spectators have to come with busses or shuttlebusses from the fairground. or wherever else they can find a place to park their car. That's a pretty ridiculous plan in my humble view.
We're obviously allready having enough traffic jams after the game here in Aachen when the new Tivoli is sold out (even though that all worked out pretty well on the first matchday) and loads of fans here come by bus and many like me also just walk to the stadium from their appartements in town, which surely wont be the case in Mainz with that location.
To me it looks like the traffic concept for this stadium in Mainz needs some serious workover to get it anywhere near being a practical one.
So far they've only done numbergames to come up with the necessary minimum of 6500 to 7000 parking spaces for the stadium. They're in fact basically only providing about a real 10% of the actually minimum required parking capacity, the rest is a shuttle service and using the parking of the University campus, which won't even available at all possible playing times.

I think it's a nice arena. Looks kinda british with the open corners... nevertheless I think that Hoffenheim's Rhein-Neckar Arena is the most beautiful (german) stadium with a capacity around 30k

I actually think that this will be a positive. Not only in terms of something slightly different from most modern, simple and complete wraparound grounds, but also to give ventilation to the pitch too.

All in all this looks like it's going to be a great stadium for Mainz, and a worthy addition to the grounds already there for Bundesliga fans. Would dearly love to go to some games in Germany in the future!

But, although I realise that it's often the only option, I'm not really a fan of stadiums that are built on the outermost outskirts of a city - in the middle of fields. I far prefer city centre stadiums

I like the sort of open corners, not wide open but open enough to give views and airflow in and out. And its certainly in the running for my favorite mid sized stadium in Germany (although Dresden and Hoffenheim are real solid) besides the location.

what is the cost of this new stadium?

Alemanniafan
October 25th, 2010, 05:21 PM
what is the cost of this new stadium?

60 mio €, 45 mio € ust for the stadium itself 15 mio € for infrastructure.
But the stadium is being built by the city of Mainz not by the soccerclub Mainz 05, so it's all Taxpayers money from the city and state of Rheinland-Palz.
And exactly that is probably the biggest downside of this stadium project, since the city of Mainz itself has plenty of debts allready.
The soccerclub is going to rent if for 3.3 mio € per year if they play in the first Bundesliga and for 2.3 mio € per year when they play in the second Bundesliga.

The stadium itself will be a really nice stadium, which has been designed by the same architect as the new Tivoli (you'll be able to find a few simmilarities to the new Tivoli here and there), but I believe it shouldn't have been built from taxpayers money. And as JimB allready mentioned, the location is pretty awfull out there in the middle of nowhere.
And in addition to that, the traffic concept doesn't deserve the name concept.

So the stadiums body itself is really nice and very good, but the overall stadium all together sadly has a few very poor flaws to it.
Especially the missing parking space nearby basically ruins the major benefits of a location out of town. In Mainz execept those few VIP's, all the visitors that come by car will have to park on university grounds and walk quite some distance or will have to park on the remote Parking areas and be transferred via shuttlebusses to a busstop which itself ist still 800 meters away from the stadium. We will of course have to wait and see how it all works out on matchdays, but to me the traffic concept of this stadium seems to be pretty much a complete disaster. And regarding the fact that the stadium is on a remote area out of town, the traffic to and from the stadium should have been solved far better. On a remote location the aspects of getting to a stadium halfwhat comfortably gain a lot of importance. But since it's all taxpayers money the owner didn't spend any extra on a decent parking infrastructure. Of course the city preferred saving the money on these kind of "secondary" things.

Just as an example, even here in Aachen where the stadium is within the city boundaries close to the city center, the traffic to the stadium has been managed far better than in Mainz, all the different parking areas for the visitors are within one km of walking distance. And the bus stop is right outside in front the stadium. And in about 15 minutes one can even walk out to the stadium from the city center here. So the whole matchday experience here includes walking over to a bar with friends and celebrating after a victory.
In Mainz such just won't be possible at all since the stadium is far out on a green field. And getting to and from the stadium will probably take quite a while with such a poor traffic concept.
And that's a real pity, because the stadium is very nice otherwise. Well, at least the fans will have plenty of strawberries around their stadium.

Simple design, very low construction cost & method. Its really a top class second division stadium, with the end product looking what it is. Its a pity its so basic with it being owned by authorities and multi functinal use, but in all a big step ahead for a small club like Mainz. It is well timed too. IF mainz can qualify for Europe next year (its a big ask) then they need this to play home games, cuz their current stadium wud be problems with UEFA.

They might do, but i quite like the open feel corners, cuz its different from most new designs. Has an old fashioned feel to it. Its good that they are closed with glass tho. I was thinking that the wind chill in winter wud be bad, but sensibly they are glazing it.
I'm not a Mainz fan, but my father is so no doubt he will probably drag me over there nest year, so it will be interesting to see what the quality of build is first hand.... sure it will be functional but very basic...

No progress for a month? Do they stop in Germany over this period?

Well, the pictures don't show any interiors of the main stand.
And the main stand is ususally the most critical and most difficult part of a stadium like this.
In germany it depends there are lot's of things where the work stops due to the cold temperatures, but I suppose they kept working inside the main stand.
the seats are installed very quickly so that may just as well happen later without delaying anything, grass also surely won't grow at this time of the year, so naturally once the stands are erected and the roof is finished, there won't be all that much visible progress in the parts of the stadium shown here on the pictures.
But I suppose there was lots of work inside the main stand. Unless the fact that this stadium won't opened until the beginning of next season anyways gave the builders such an extremely relaxed timeline that they all had the option to just go on a longer christmas vacation and construction companies trying to partially save some salaries by officially claiming they had no work due to the cold weather and applying for financial support.

For Mainz there is only car connection, but I heard of a tram should be going there.

As far as I know, the plan of a Tram going to the stadium were just an april fools joke in local media.
The traffic concept of the stadium website and elsewhere has no plans of a tram. But on the other hand... the whole traffic concept could probably easily qualify as an april fools joke.

And about new stadia locations. In Dresden and in Aachen are two brand new 30K stadia which stayed where they allways were or nearly where they were. And in Bornheim and Berlin they also renovated and modernized two smaller stadia in their old locations.
There are indeed numerous examples where the stadia didn't move out of town or stayed just where they were. It's common that stadia move out of the cities, but there are indeed several other examples that show it can quite often be done better.

In Mainz the location is indeed pretty poor in comparison to several other comparable new stadia.
But they did indeed have serious difficulties in finding a decent location to build at all.

And traffic concept is as I allready wrote several times just plain awfull so far, especially when they should host homegames during weekdays and office times, when the university parking will be all occupied. Besides the VIP parking, the supplied parking space is hardly anything but mere number games for example and the parking spaces they really have available, especially for homegames during weekdays are all very remote and can only be reached by bus.

In my opinion it has a really good stadium building, but looking at the overall package, the new stadia in Aachen, St. Pauli, Dresden and even those in Hoffenheim and Augsburg are overal better stadia, simply because they all - unlike Mainz - do have fairly decent acessability by car, bus or as in the first three cases even by foot.
And they all have more or less really good new stadium buildings also, some maybe even a little better than the one in Mainz. But as usual these things are also a question of personal taste and likes.
So in my personal stadium ranking of new 30k stadia in Germany, the Coface Arena in Mainz only ends up on place 6, behind those 5 mentioned above. It just has to big flaws in the overall package.
Aachen is in town and very simmilar to Mainz, and surely my personal favorite, not only because I'm a clubs fan.
St. Pauli has terracing on three sides and is also in a far superior location.
Dresden and Augsburg both have steeper stands and the stadium in Dresden is also right in town by a park. Hoffenheim and Augsburg both have simmilarly remote locations but Augsburg and Hoffenheim have a fairly decent share of parking space and are both not build only with taxpayers money, which is in my view a little plus. So Hoffenheim which also has a nice stadium design too and Augsburg both end up slightly ahead of Mainz, but very close and maybe I'll change my mind on those two, when the Coface Arena and the exterior of the Impuls Arena in Augsburg are completed, who knows.

Mainz and Leverkusen are nearly about the same size, furthermore its part of the cologne agglomeration.

In the classic understanding of football culture, a stadium should be in the city and not between potatoe and corn fields. However, the point of building the stadium outside the city is because of the traffic. But i some cases it caused even more trouble, epecially on the parking lots. I am really excited how plans work out in Mainz.

Why not? It's not that difficult. here in Aachen we converted 11000 places of terracing if I remember correctly in three days or so for the match of the german national team vs Malta.
We rented blue seats from the Veltins Arena in Schalke for that one occasion, because it was far cheaper than buying and storing them for such rare occasions as international matches are in Aachen.

Converting teracing into seating areas is no big deal. Just take away the barriers, drill some holes if neccessary and place seats onto every second step/row.

Yes CL and EL don't allow terracing. And Dortmund has been converted into an all seater more than once.

Minimum capacity is also no problem in Dortmund, being Germanies largest stadium.

In small stadia minimum capacity can be a problem though, but of course only if the capacity as an all seater is to low. the stadium in Mainz should be large enough to host EL games when converted into an all seater. I don't know for sure about the minimum requirements for CL games though and if those are the same as they are for EL games.
The capacity of the coface Arena in Mainz as an all seater should probably be somewhere around 27.000 to 29.000.
Its probably posted somewhere here in this thread allready, I suppose.

A couple of years ago there was a documentation on a German TV station that showed the transfirmation from terrace into all-seater of Südtribüne Dortmund. As far as I remember there are 6-10 seats pre-assembled on a metal rail. So they don't have to assemble seat by seat. It takes 2 days to transform the Südtribüne into an all-seater.

Fences (or alterrnatively glass which is used in some stadia) in front of the terracing areas are mandatory in Germany.

So they will also have them in Mainz as well, but only in front of the terracing stand not in front of seated stands. I dont know about the hybrid area on the opposite stand though, but they will probably have fences there as well. Or alternatively glass of course, but usually fences are preferred to glass by the clubs and the fans as well here in Germany.

Ps: You can see the fence in the Coface-Arena up on this page in the second posting, the one from Pamirez about the preparation for the pitch, in the lower left corner of the picture.

Has there ever been any consideration to scrapping them?

When the fences were removed from terraces in England in the early 90s, there were widespread predictions in some quarters of it leading to loads of crowd trouble and pitch invasions, but it didn't happen.

Watching through a fence is something you accept when you are used to it, but after a few years of unobstructed views, if you go back to a terrace like that then it's quite a shock to realise what you used to consider normal.

no, in bundesliga you watch over the fence. the stands ar built higher than the pitch-level to improve vizibility.

Yes this is what i was getting at. Uefa dont allow terracing as you say and for this i was wondering what they plan to do for europe IF they qualify and would they then meet min capacity needs..

Their cap. will meet min cap. needs, but I think its stupid to have the smallest cap. on the games that will sure be sold out

The minimum capacity for UEFA club competitions is 8000 seats (Category 4, instead of scrapped Elite Category's 30 000), so they will exceed that by far.

As far as I know, the plan of a Tram going to the stadium were just an april fools joke in local media.

Unfortunately, it's not a joke .... however, a new bus terminal near the stadium is already under construction. Also, the number of (VIP) parking lots will be ~1500. I don't expect more traffic desasters than nowadays around the old Bruchweg stadium.

It's planned as being expandable, but not by all that much.

The expansion would be done by closing the corners.
I think it was supposed to be something like around 3000 or 5000 extra seats if I remember correctly.
And there are currently no intentions to do that anytime soon.

Why does everybody want to expand. The best atmosphere in football history were often in the small stadia that were packed to the fullest. :ohno:

I interpreted the question as "Is it designed with the option of an easy future expansion in mind?"

Of course theoretically speaking, with enough money to spend, nearly anything is possible, but many theoretically possible expansions are hardly viable or financially beneficial.
Especially not if they require a costly stadium roof to be replaced.

Look at the modernisation and expansion of the Bay Area for example and compare the cost to those of building the new stadia in Aachen, Dresden, Hoffenheim or Augsburg.
The expansion and modernisation of the Bay Arena cost just as much, in some cases even more than building these other mentioned new stadia, with capacities nearly the same as the expanded and modernized Bay Arena now has.
Or compare the modernisation of the Weserstadion in Bremen to the cost of building the Stadion im Borussiapark in Gladbach as another example.

Dont mix "expansion" with "modernization". ;-)

BayArena has been primarily modernized and is now one of the best training facilities in Germany, and topclass in the world. The expansion was just decoration and mainly for VIP Seats. BayArena could have been also expanded by transforming into terracing.

Mainz and specially Offenbach is build for easy expansion. They have build in a second level concours which is normally not neccesary for one tier stadia.

But I dont think they will ever be expanded.

Looks like they are just painting the concrete... It looks awful... It needs some sort of render or cosmetic panels.. I agree, but that would have been a lot more costly.
What I also don't like about the paint is the colour, the red tone could have been a nicer one, more Ferarri kind of red. But it might of course also be that this red tone happens to look better in real life than it does on photos or a computer screen. I wonder what the corners will look like when they are finished. The way I learned to know this club and the builders I'd expect those to be covered with large advertisements from Coface or the clubs main Sponsor Entega or something along that line.
This whole stadium concept is indeed very commercially tuned and oriented with all these commercial marketing and shopping areas at the rear upper end of the stands. Even though it pretends to be very traditional and traditionalistic, it is indeed quite a bit more commercial than most other modern stadia in Germany if you look at it a bit closer.
And (probably for maximum entertainment and event purposes) they even have about twice as many speakers hanging under the roof, than we do here in Aachen in the new Tivoli.
By now I'm allready pretty anxious to see how all these details will turn out to be in the end and what effects they will have on the stadium along with the traffic concept.

Ps: What surprises me most by the way, is that the business and VIP area in the main stand seems to have so very few windows. I expected it to be much more open and glassy, just like in the new Tivoli. The view out over all the green fields around the stadium should have been really nice from there, but on the photos it somehow looks like they closed that all up with concrete walls instead, which would be a real pity.

Im still against the painted concrete. Whatever colour, it still would look poor. The finish of the concrete cannot be hidden by paint, even corrugated shhets of steel, nicely painted would be better, until they can afford a decent facade later on... It looks like a painted BUNKER... its basic but ok for Mainz. If they had just spent a little extra on finishing it properly (inside and out) it would be great for them.. Its just a concrete block with paint on! I mean if it is commercially tuned, then they should have agreed that sponsors fund covering the building with fancy facade or render.. What would it cost to cover this with just a flat panel facade? 1M? Sponsor pays?
What are they gonna do. Paint spray sponsors name on the concrete like graffiti?

You're right this red painted concrete somehow really does give the stadium a bit of a painted bunker kind of appeal.

And, yes maybe they indeed really should spray sponsors names as grafittis onto the stadium by the way.
Here in Aachen we've started putting fanclubs graffitis all along the stadium concourse. The first few of those that were approved by our "stadium group" (a specially founded commitee of organized fans and officials to help make our stadium more homely, individual and atmospheric) look kinda neat.
It could probably only end up looking better than plain red painted concrete.

The stadium architect is Dr. Stefan Nixdorf from agn Niederberghaus & Partner
(http://www.agn.de/)
The same architect and company that also designed the new Tivoli in Aachen by the way and if I'm informed correctly he also worked on the Rheinenergiestadion in Cologne before, but there only as one of several architects in the team.
The construction company is HBM who also built the Veltins Arena and the stadium in Johannesburg.(http://www.hbmbau.de/)

There You can see that the seats in the corner right next to the terracing section are actually lower than the adjactent steps of the terracing stands that people will be standing on.
So sitting in those seats in these lower corners one will hardly get to see anything but the smelly feet of terracing fans standing right next to there.

We have a halfwhat simmilar situation in the new Tivoli, but here in Aachen the corner seats are on the same height as the terracing section, so if the stadium is really sold out the few people sitting there (about 10 or 20) can at least stand up and then they will get to see every corner of the pitch.

But here in Mainz in those corners people standing up will still be standing quite a bit lower than those people in the adjactent terracing section, so standing up doesn't really solve the problem of obstructed views there, whenever the stadium is sold out. (They will not be able to see one corner and probably even one goal of the pitch, depending on the seat because of people standing in the sightlines)
And sitting down there, one will probably hardly ever get to see anything but the fence right next to those seats.

In Aachen these type of obstructions from people standing are only an issue for just very few seats (about 10 to 20 seats which are usually empty anyways) in one corner of the stadium because in the other corners of the Tivoli there is either an entrance, the guests terracing section, or only seats in the adjactent sections so that there are no obstructions from people standing then.
But as much as I could tell, here in Mainz it really seems to be a problem for several seats in three corners of the stadium.

I hate those corners, no offence. I would have prefered it more like Highbury if the architect didnt know how to close it. and it looks way too compact... Ok, it is new stadium for a team that didnt have a good stadium, but I waited more. BUT, let's see when it is finished. maybe we will agree all then that it is great.

Yes, the standing area will be painting red. Also the area of the guest. So the stadion will look very red inside. I like it. Its a great feeling, when you stand in the middle of the field and look around....wow....

Its one of my favorite Stadiums in Germany. Its really built for the fans, and not for commercial. I love this club!

The painted concrete really hinders the project, but as a whole it is very modern, solar panels give a nice effect. In addition to everything yet there is harmony between colors.

Well, in Germany it's very typical to build stadiums outside the city.
(unlike England and Spain for example)
But nevertheless the infrastructure (metro connection, parking spaces) is always quite good.

The painted concrete really hinders the project, but as a whole it is very modern, solar panels give a nice effect. In addition to everything yet there is harmony between colors.

What you saw on the pics were the priming paint. In the meanwhile it got painted two more times and you need to be very close to see that it's concrete. I have seen already some newer pictures from outside and it looks very uniform and smooth painted. I'm sure there will be some more updates available soon, that you know what i mean. Else i do some. Will stay there next weekend.

You're right. I read about 3rd July. The fans will start with a march from old to new stadium (approximately 2-3km).

A lot of buildings need to be painted regularly and look fine most of the time. A number of Calatrava's projects for instance require annual recoating or else they will fade from white to brown. The Milwaukee Art Museum for instance budgets almost a $1 million for that. Its just a matter of upkeep with these sorts of finishes, how much are the willing to put into maintenance.

This stadium does seem to be looking pretty good at the moment though

Odd, but far from unheard of, I would have preferred either a dyed concrete (though much harder to execute) or a finish layer over the top like a powder coated panel system, but this is cheaper, and value engineering will lead to some weird results.

If they were smart they would sell the space for advertising and that pay for nice panelling facade. Both profit and stadium improvement at virtually zero cost.

They'll have to unless they decide to rent the Commerzbank Arena or some other stadium.

But it's not all that complicated and expensive to transform terracing sections into seating sections. We've done that here in Aachen when the German National Team played a friendly match.
We rented blue seats from Schalkes Veltins-Arena for that occasion because they have the same type of seats as we have here in Aachen. The installation of the seats just took two days here and the size and capacity of the terracing sections in the Tivoli in Aachen and in the Coface-Arena Mainz are nearly identical.

Renting the blue seats from Schalkes Arena was far cheaper than buying and storing our own somewhere until the day they might be needed again. (especially the longtime storage of the seats would have been unreasonably costly)

They changed their mind about renting seats and they will order own. Was in some interview few days ago. One reason is, to have the whole stadium in the same (red) look, the other reason is that they would need to buy a special system which is used in frankfurt to install the rented seats. I expect, that the order for 7000 extra seats will send out not later than monday :)

For Mainz it's like a won championship. Mainz had one of the lowest budgets in Bundesliga, so it was nearly the maximum and it's still an awesome success. The new stadium will help to gain more possibilities, but the main target to keep in this league won't be changed.
