winter time on the frozen river
sunday afternoon
they're playing hockey on the river
he'll have that scar on his chin forever
someday his girlfriend will say hey where...
and he might look out the window, or not
you skate as fast as you can 'til you hit the snowbank
that's how you stop
and you get your sweater from a catalogue
you use your rubber boots for goal posts
don't let those sunday afternoons
get away get away get away get away
break away break away break away break away
this stick was signed by jean belliveau
so don't fucking tell me where to fucking go
sunday afternoon
someone's dog just took the puck
he buried it it's in the snowbank
they rioted in the streets of montreal
when they benched rocket richard
it's true...
the sun is fading on the frozen river
the wind is dying down
someone else just got called for dinner
sunday afternoon
AndrewJM3D May 3rd, 2009, 08:55 PM How far from the core is it? Such a shame it's been so let go. This would make a great focal point to a new mixed use area. Turn that baby into a condo tower and the old hall into a farmers market, or European style mall. Kind of like what we did in Toronto with our Distillery District. That building has so much potential.
10 years ago this area was falling apart with contaminated soil. Now it's a vibrant community of condo dwellers, boutiques, restarants, art galleries and studios.

AndrewJM3D May 3rd, 2009, 09:16 PM Here's what I see.
A bustling outdoor farmers market using the old platform shelters as covered stalls for sellers.

Fine dining in the old halls

Shops and restaurants on the right taking up the first two levels, then stacked two story townhomes with a modern yet non clashing addition to the roof that would allow the second level for the top units. A full condo conversion of the Tower and some serious landscaping.

Making Buffalo the Terminus, just like the Erie Canal. Look what that did to us! We are on the verge of a boom! ;)

If only someone had the money and the market conditions were prime.
ExWNY'er May 4th, 2009, 10:59 PM I love that building. I see awesome potential there. If it is the stop for high speed rail (as is reported), then the light rail will have to extend to it. Relocate the Broadway Market to this or make a second branch of the Albright Knox or both. It has to be a desitnation unto itself
Jaybird May 5th, 2009, 12:22 AM I love that building, too. It's standing tall, and I think is in much better shape than one might think. It is very much restorable.
In an unrelated story, last month the City of Detroit announced a demolition permit of the Michigan Central Station, Detroit's equivalent to the Buffalo Central Terminal.
ExWNY'er May 5th, 2009, 04:28 AM That Detroit one is cool. What a waste. They can't save it?
homestar May 5th, 2009, 11:24 PM ^^ Christmas might save the Detroit terminal. ;)

Sabretooth May 7th, 2009, 04:52 AM If nothing else, the tower and hall need to be preserved (and they're probably in the best condition thanks to the CTRC). All the other buildings in the complex would probably take quite a bit of work - but then again it's probably decent construction and certainly not impossible. At least before Albany creates a 10% "Central Terminal Reconstruction Tax".
That's a shame about the Detroit station. Hopefully the lawsuit is successful.

26 June 2009
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A group seeking to rescue Buffalo's Central Terminal is throwing an 80th birthday party for the former train station.
Saturday's bash inside the former hub of the New York Central Railroad will feature entertainment from big bands and jazz ensembles, as well as the return of the terminal's 15-foot-tall clock to the main concourse.
The four-sided timepiece was purchased in 2005 and restored after being brought back to Buffalo. The clock was a popular meeting place during the terminal's heyday.
The station fell into disrepair after closing in 1979, 50 years after it opened.
The Central Terminal Restoration Corp. owns the massive building and has cleaned up the terminal in the hope it will be redeveloped through government or private funding.
