Hello friends, Im from Costa Rica, in Central America, and I will like to know more about the proyect to build the airport in the island of Saint Helena, in the South Atlantic... Thanks my friends...

As far as I'm aware, this has been held up for various reasons, namely the economic downturn - the airport is going to be funded by the UK government as Saint Helena is heavily subsidised and has no real local economy. A lot of the residents work on Ascension Island.

I think an earlier plan by a company called "Shelco" was refused a few years back... and there's some controversy over the location of the runway.

Saint Helena is one Britain's few remaining overseas territories, and is one of the most remote places on the planet that has a population (5000 - wiki it.) The island is currently connected to the UK & mainland Africa by a boat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_St_Helena_(1989)) It's off the coast of Africa... further across you have Tristan Da Cuhna (Another British territory).

The island used to have a flax industry but that stopped in the 1960s and it is now pretty much reliant on the UK. It has a small tourist industry and I once bought some coffee from there! It took about 2 months to arrive.

The British government want to build an airport on the island. Or don't.
